With winter setting in, countless backyard dogs will soon be struggling to survive long days and nights outside in the freezing cold. Some die from exposure because of lack of basic shelter, but most somehow pull through, suffering terribly from the cold and damp conditions of winter.
But, with your help, PETA can build and deliver hundreds of sturdy, warm doghouses filled with straw for these lonely dogs whose guardians won't relinquish them or let them go inside. Your sponsorship today can not only help dogs make it through this winter's worst weather but also help provide comfort through wind, rain, and summer heat for years to come.
By becoming a PETA "Angel for Animals" doghouse sponsor, you can help alleviate the suffering of outdoor dogs who spend their lonely lives trapped at the end of a chain, with no real shelter from freezing temperatures, snow, sleet, and other weather extremes. Here's how you can help these dogs:
Your "Angel for Animals" sponsorship gift of $265 can provide one doghouse filled with straw to a needy dog. Your "Angel for Animals" sponsorship gift of $1,325 can shelter five dogs in PETA doghouses filled with straw. Your "Angel for Animals" sponsorship gift of $2,650 can give a needed home and straw to 10 backyard dogs. Please make as generous a sponsorship gift as you can. Help us provide as many sorely neglected dogs as possible with shelter and a warm spot to curl up in!
It is in tough times like these that unloved animals need you the most. We will fight as hard as we possibly can to ensure that animals are not mistreated, forgotten, or ignored.

Share your warmth with a cold dog this holiday season
Life is never easy for a neglected dog who lives outside at the end of a chain. Some manage to find a little cover from the wind and rain underneath a bush or behind a garbage can, although even they won't be able to hide from the cold. Some will suffer horribly from frostbite and even die from exposure.
This winter, life is going to be even more difficult for many of these animals, as the economic crisis means that they will have even less to eat and no toys to fight the terrible boredom that is their only companion.
As a PETA doghouse sponsor, you can give a backyard dog shelter from the cold and wind with a sturdy PETA doghouse. Please be an "Angel for Animals" today. Thanks to our caring "Angel for Animals" sponsors, PETA has built and delivered more than 4,000 top-quality doghouses. That means more than 4,000 animals now have shelter and a fighting chance to survive the freezing cold and sweltering heat—for years to come. :

Recently, our caseworkers received a call about a dog forced to live outside with no shelter who had attempted to dig himself a hole to escape a severe thunderstorm the night before. We talked to the "owners" and got local officials involved. Thankfully, the dog is now inside!
Of course, whenever we meet a neglected backyard dog, we always try to convince the guardians to bring the animal inside. But sadly, sometimes the dog's guardians just can't be persuaded, authorities refuse to take action, or laws won't allow them to be removed. That's when we do whatever we can to improve the animals' lives. And for many dogs, a sturdy doghouse filled with warm straw bedding makes a big difference. With your help as an "Angel for Animals" doghouse sponsor, we can help stop the terrible suffering of needy dogs.
You should know that our commitment to these dogs doesn't end once we've delivered their doghouse. For example, two of our caseworkers recently went to check in on some of the animals who had received a PETA doghouse. They found one, named Snowball, tied to the doghouse we'd built with a rope only a few feet long. She had no water and no food, and her ears were badly bitten by flies. Our caseworkers immediately applied medicine to her ears and gave her food, water, and a 15-foot dog tie. They swept up all the feces and broken beer bottles in the small area where she's forced to live, and they spent extra time giving her the love and affection that she desperately needed.
Animal suffering doesn't take weekends off, so neither do we. I am so proud of our staff's dedication to improving the lives of dogs like Snowball, who've known so little human kindness. But all the work that we do begins with the caring and generosity of supporters like you.
Will you help a neglected dog stuck outside in the cold this winter by becoming an "Angel for Animals" doghouse sponsor today?
Very truly yours,
Ingrid E. Newkirk President
P.S. One simple act of kindness from you, Kelly, can help provide a vulnerable animal with immediate relief from the cold and protection from the harsh winter conditions for many years to come. Won't you please become an "Angel for Animals" doghouse sponsor today? Your gift of any size will really help these animals. Please give what you can.

| Noticia del 05 de noviembre de 2008 : Greyhound Racing: Death in the Fast Lane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Greyhounds’ natural speed and grace have been exploited for human benefit since the days of the ancient Egyptians. The dogs have been used for centuries in hunting and coursing events, but the advent of modern dog racing at the turn of the 20th century caused greyhound breeders and racetrack proprietors to think of this breed as a mere commodity. Greyhound racing continues to be big business, generating millions of dollars in revenue in the states that still allow it. Today, the cruelty of the industry is finally being exposed, and thanks to the resulting public outcry, there has been a decline in the number of spectators attending greyhound races. Unfortunately, these financial losses may be contributing to poor track conditions, which have caused a marked rise in animal injuries at some tracks.(1) The Killing Field In a horrific example of this industry’s cruelty, in 2002 the remains of approximately 3,000 greyhounds from Florida racetracks were discovered on the Alabama property of a former racetrack security guard who had been “retiring” unwanted greyhounds with a .22 rifle for more than 40 years.(2) The attorney for the accused, who faced up to 10 years in prison on felony cruelty-to-animals charges, said, “If there’s anybody to be indicted here, it’s the industry because this is what they’re doing to these animals. The misery begins the day they’re born. The misery ends when my client gets a hold of them and puts a bullet in their head.”(3) The Alabama greyhound massacre made it more obvious than ever that racing greyhounds are treated as “running machines,” produced in quantities that require the disposal of surplus dogs and dogs who are injured, old, or deemed too slow or no longer profitable. Winners and Losers Thousands of greyhounds are killed each year as the declining dog-racing industry struggles to stay alive. Some puppies are killed in the name of “selective breeding” before they ever touch a racetrack. Dogs who do qualify to become racers typically live in cages and are kept muzzled by their trainers at all times. Many exhibit crate and muzzle sores and suffer from infestations of internal and external parasites. Although they are extremely sensitive to temperature because of their lack of body fat and thin coats, greyhounds are forced to race in extreme conditions—ranging from subzero temperatures to sweltering heat of more than 100°F. Sickness and injuries—including broken legs, heatstroke, and heart attacks—claim the lives of many dogs before they are ever “retired.” Others—such as Randad, a dog in Alabama—are victims of track machinery. Randad was electrocuted when he jumped onto the lure rail and became entangled on the mechanical lure.(4) Another dog, Tune Me In, suffered for 30 minutes before being euthanized after he was badly cut by a mechanical lure at a Florida track.(5) During a three-year span, almost 500 greyhounds were injured while racing on Massachusetts tracks.(6) One Iowa track’s general manager defended greyhound casualties at his track by claiming that “top-notch dogs run harder and are more injury-prone.”(7) Other dogs die during transport from one racetrack to another. It is common practice in the industry to carry up to 60 greyhounds in one truck, with two or three dogs per crate, and to line the floor of these “haulers” with ice rather than providing air conditioning.( The backs of these trucks reach temperatures in excess of 100°F on a summer day, deadly conditions for animals who cannot sweat in order to cool themselves. Several greyhounds died on a truck during a 100-mile trip between Naples and Miami.(9) Conditions for the animals “at home” are often not much better. In 2005, 73 greyhounds died in a West Virginia kennel that went up in flames because of a faulty ceiling fan. Only five years earlier, more than 50 dogs died from heatstroke when an air conditioner malfunctioned in a kennel owned by the same man.(10) A Massachusetts man was charged with cruelty to animals after 10 greyhounds at his farm were found to be severely dehydrated and suffering from malnutrition.(11) Most dogs who slow down and become unprofitable are either killed immediately or sold to research laboratories. In 2002, a former greyhound kennel owner and an assistant faced felony charges for selling more than 1,000 greyhounds for medical experiments. They claimed to be running a greyhound “adoption agency.”(12) Some unwanted dogs suffer further cruelty. In one case at Idaho’s Coeur d’Alene Greyhound Park, a female greyhound was taken from her crate and placed in the middle of a crowded room on a wet floor. A man then shoved a metal wire into her rectum and attached an alligator clip onto her lip, and she was electrocuted. Witnesses said that it was not the first time that a race dog at the park had been killed in this manner.(13) The state of Idaho has since banned dog racing. Other Victims Midwestern farmers who use greyhounds to kill coyotes in the winter have begun to race the dogs during the summer, using dead coyote skins as lures “to keep their dogs in shape.”(14) In live-lure training, greyhounds are encouraged to chase and kill live rabbits who are hung from horizontal poles so that the dogs will also chase the inanimate lures used during actual races. Officially, the industry now frowns upon the once-sanctioned practice of using live rabbits, guinea pigs, and cats as bait for live-lure training, but this method continues to be used. Ronald Floyd was prohibited from running dogs at Oregon tracks after he allowed six dogs to die of heatstroke inside a van, but he was not prohibited from breeding greyhounds. Investigators found a dead rabbit in his driveway following yet another greyhound death at his farm years later, which finally prompted the commission to pull his license to race, train, and board dogs.(15) The Arizona gaming commission suspended the license of a trainer who was caught attaching live rabbits to the “whirligig” that greyhounds chase around the track.(16) One Massachusetts breeder says that for six to eight months, she sends her 1-year-old greyhounds to Oklahoma, “where they learn to race by chasing jackrabbits.”(17) Help and Hope Greyhounds are usually gentle, quiet, and friendly, and some lucky dogs are placed in caring homes. Reputable adoption groups, funded by donations and staffed by volunteers, save as many retired greyhounds as they can. There are greyhound rescue groups in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Western Europe. The Greyhound Protection League organizes adoption programs throughout the United States and distributes information about the racing industry. Although adoption helps, the only way to ultimately end greyhound abuse is to put an end to racing. The industry is slowly dying because of competition from casinos and a lack of interest from younger gamblers who are looking for games with faster action. At Wonderland Greyhound Park in Massachusetts, less than $10 million was wagered in 2004, compared to $195 million in 1990.(18) The Washington Post noted the dwindling numbers of breeders, bettors, and purses and concluded that “the sport has declined so sharply even its aficionados see no real hope for its revival.”(19) Dog racing is illegal in 34 states but continues in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusettes (phased out by 2010), New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Texas, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.(20, 21) Even states that have banned dog racing may still permit off-track or satellite wagering and the breeding of racing dogs. In an attempt to revive dog racing, some state legislatures and lobbyists are rewriting gambling laws to allow the tracks to install slot machines and video lottery terminals. GREY2K USA is lobbying for legislation to put an end to greyhound racing. What You Can Do Help to educate racing supporters by leafleting at a local track. Even if your state has banned greyhound racing, it’s likely that it has breeding kennels that supply dogs to other states. Write letters to the editors of your local newspapers explaining why it’s vital that we put an end to this cruel and useless sport. Will you help shelter a lonely dog from the cold?
Dear Kelly,
Right now, a neglected dog sits shivering in a trash-strewn back yard, exposed to the cold, the snow, and the freezing rain. This sad animal, like thousands of others, has only one hope to make it through the winter: your support of PETA's "Angel for Animals" program.
You can help a cold and neglected dog by becoming a PETA "Angel for Animals" doghouse sponsor today. :

A PETA fieldworker never knows what he or she will find when responding to a call. In recent months, we met Killian, a black lab and pit bull mix originally named "Killer," who was just 8 weeks old when we found him living in a trailer park, his ear ripped and bloody. We pleaded with his owner to let us take him for medical attention. He finally agreed, but only on the condition that we bring "Killer" back.
In addition to fixing his injured ear, our medical staff treated him for worms, fleas, and ticks. Killian lived with PETA staff member Heather for a month or so while he healed. We tried to convince Killian's owner to let him live with Heather permanently, but even though it was clear that he cared nothing for Killian and considered the puppy a possession, he refused.
Returning Killian to his owner was one of the hardest things we've had to do, but while he was living there, dedicated PETA fieldworkers kept a close eye on his well-being. Thankfully, a few months later, Killian's owner no longer wanted him and agreed to sign him over to PETA. Today—after another trip to the veterinarian, a neuter surgery, and removal of thousands of ticks—Killian lives with Heather and is the happiest and healthiest he has been in his whole life.
Of course, adoption is not always an option. Many times, a dog's guardian won't give up the animal yet refuses to allow the dog inside the house. That's when PETA does everything we can to improve the quality of the animal's life, often by building him or her a sturdy doghouse filled with warm straw bedding. Our doghouses are built to last—they give a backyard dog a place to curl up for years. :

Support for PETA's "Angel for Animals" program this winter alone can help us build and deliver 200 doghouses over the coming months. But there are still many more dogs in desperate need of your help with the bitter cold on the way. So I hope that you will step up for one of these poor animals by sponsoring a doghouse right now.
Please help us provide a doghouse to a forgotten and ignored dog who is facing months outside in the freezing cold, wind, and rain. You'll get no better feeling this holiday season than by improving the life of a needy animal.
Thank you for helping us keep neglected dogs out of the cold.
Kind regards,
Ingrid E. Newkirk President
P.S. This holiday season, I urge you to consider giving a needy dog the gift of medical care and a solid roof over his or her head. Please be an Angel for Animals by sponsoring a PETA doghouse today. For a lonely dog facing the winter chained outside in the cold, your generosity can mean the difference between life and death. Any amount that you can spare will help.

Why Animals Do Not Make Good Gifts Animals, like us, require love and proper care to flourish. Although people who give animals as gifts invariably have good intentions, it is unfair to give an animal to anyone unless you are absolutely certain that the person wants that particular animal as a companion and is willing and able to give a lifetime of proper care. Think Before Giving Adding an animal companion to the family is an important decision. It means making a permanent commitment to care for and spend time with the animal and to provide for his or her lifelong care.
Before adopting, consider the time and money involved in proper animal care. Will your loved one have the time and patience to exercise and housetrain the animal? Is he or she prepared to pay for food, accessories (such as toys, grooming supplies, leashes and harnesses, and bedding), inoculations, and veterinary care, including spaying or neutering, flea treatment, deworming, and emergency care?
If a family decides to adopt an animal, every member of the family should go to the local animal shelter together to choose the animal, having already discussed the obligations and long-term commitments involved. Please, never buy from breeders or pet stores, and always practice your ABCs—animal birth control. For every animal purchased from a breeder or a pet shop, a potential home is taken away from a homeless dog or a cat at a local animal shelter.
Children May Not Be Ready Small children may unintentionally harm animals, even breaking their fragile bones or causing other fatal injuries, when they think they are playing. Puppies, kittens, bunnies, chicks, baby ducks, and other young animals are especially vulnerable.
We have heard too many stories about families in which the child has lost interest in an animal, and the adult is forced to make the difficult decision on the best way to "solve" the problem. Often this means turning the animal over to a crowded shelter or pound or—worse—passing the animal on to a series of homes, causing trauma, psychological scarring, and behavioral problems. Too Few Happy Endings Animal shelters are filled beyond capacity with homeless animals, many of whom were former "pets" who, for one reason or another, didn't fit into someone's lifestyle. No matter how much they would like to, many people who receive animals as gifts find that they are unable to make the lifelong commitment to care for their new companion.
Sadly, many people end up turning animals they received as gifts over to an overburdened humane society or animal-control agency that is likely filled to capacity. In worst-case scenarios, some people even abandon animals on the road or in the back yard when they move away. What You Can Do Don't ever give an animal as a gift. If you have discussed the idea with the prospective recipients and know that they have the time, willingness, ability, and resources to properly care for an animal and make that serious commitment, consider offering them a gift certificate from the local animal shelter. If you attend a fair, flea market, or other event at which animals are being given away, educate those who are responsible. If people are offering free kittens or puppies, for example, explain the risks of giving animals to unknown passersby—some people sell dogs and cats to laboratories or dealers, and others abuse, neglect, or abandon them. Sign our pledge saying that you will never buy an animal from a pet store or a breeder and that you will always practice your ABCs (animal birth control) by spaying or neutering your animal companions.

Introducing PETA's ABC Campaign In the U.S., homelessness is not just a human problem. U.S. animal shelters must put to death nearly 4 million dogs and cats every year because of simple math: too many animals and not enough worthy adoptive homes. You can help prevent this; it's as easy as ABC—Animal Birth Control!
Never Breed or Buy. Always Adopt. Always Spay and Neuter.
Please join countless other kind people who are practicing animal birth control. Find out how you can help, and please pledge to practice animal birth control.
Reasons for ABC Get the code: <br /><embed src="http://www.peta.org/swf/abc_8_reasons.swf" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="240" height="180" allowScriptAccess="always"></embed>

Every year in the United States, open-admission animal shelters across the nation are forced to put to death roughly half of the 6 million to 8 million unwanted dogs and cats who pour into their overwhelmed facilities. Wonderful, healthy, social, loveable animals lose their lives because of simple math: too many animals and not enough homes.
Every animal bred and born—on purpose or by accident—and every animal purchased from a breeder or a pet shop fills a home that could have taken in a dog or a cat dying for a home at a local shelter. Never breed or buy from breeders or pet stores, and always practice your ABCs—Animal Birth Control—to work toward the goal of a "No-Birth" nation.
The Goal: A 'No-Birth' Nation
The only way to make our communities "no-kill" is to work toward a "no-birth" nation through legislative measures that mandate spaying or neutering unless a proper permit is purchased, with permit revenues used solely to subsidize sterilization surgeries for low-income families and citizens. For a list of jurisdictions that have passed such laws, please click here.
Until people spay and neuter their animals, euthanasia will remain a tragic necessity. No one wants to have to euthanize animals—least of all those who hold the syringe—but every day, animal shelter workers see fates far worse than a humane death: animals who are cruelly killed by mean people; animals who are chained, neglected, and starved; animals who perish on the streets, where they are considered a public health threat and a nuisance; and more.
Be Part of the Solution: Practice Your ABCs!
Sign our pledge saying that you will never buy an animal from a pet store or a breeder and that you will practice your ABCs! If you already have an animal companion in your family from a pet store or breeder, that's OK! Pledge not to buy again and to practice your ABCs!
Be an ABC volunteer! We are looking for volunteers to help citizens make life-saving spay/neuter services a reality for their animals and their communities. If you want to get more involved in your community, e-mail us for more information!

Finding Your Companion a New Home Having to find another home for a companion animal can be very traumatic for you and certainly for your animal. If circumstances make it impossible for you to keep or properly care for your animal and if you have exhausted resources such as trusting friends and relatives, please consider the following important information when deciding how and where to relinquish your animal.
Don’t rush into a placement because you are pressured by time. If you are unable to find an excellent home for your animal, take him or her to an animal shelter operated by a humane organization. Don’t avoid a shelter just because it performs euthanasia. A humane death is far better than being “warehoused” for years in a cage or a cruel, slow death by disease, exposure, starvation, or being crushed under the wheels of a car. A peaceful end is certainly preferable to the lives that so many animals lead-tied to the end of a chain or kept continually in a garage or basement where fresh air, proper food, clean water, exercise, regular health care, companionship, respect, and love are in short supply.
Choose a shelter that (a) checks out prospective homes carefully by doing home checks; (b) requires spaying or neutering; (c) does not give or sell animals to research institutions or guard dog companies; and (d) would use a painless sodium pentobarbital injection intravenously (just as good veterinarians do) if euthanasia were to become necessary. Visit PETA’s page on animal shelters for more information on what to look for in a reputable, caring shelter.
If your animal friend is old, very shy, or very dependent on you, and you cannot find a home with someone he or she trusts and loves, the kindest course may lie in taking him or her to a veterinarian or shelter to be euthanized. Animals who have been with you a long time may suffer and pine terribly when you are gone. As a final kindness, remain in the room to comfort your old friend during euthanasia.
Never sell or give your animal to a pet shop. Persons operating pet shops are interested in making a profit and often have little to no concern about what happens to the animals after they leave the store. Without a thorough screening process, animals are sold to people buying on impulse and to people who are unfit to care for an animal. WARNING! There are people who acquire animals for laboratories or to sell as guard or attack dogs. These individuals often pretend to seek animals as family companions and bring children or senior citizens along with them to gain your confidence. Don’t think it can’t happen to you. Always ask for identification (legitimate callers will not object when you tell them why). Write down the person’s full name, driver’s license number, address, and telephone number and explain that you will visit his or her home (to ensure that he or she actually lives there). Ask for (and check) references from veterinarians, neighbors, and employers.
“Free to a good home,” a buncher’s five favorite words. Many unscrupulous individuals obtain animals through ads and sell them to laboratories, use them in dogfights or rituals, or subject them to other torture. Click here for more information. To ensure that your animal is going to the best place possible, please don’t place an ad. Click here to find an animal shelter near you. For more guidance on selecting a shelter, click here.
Many people run these ads thinking that they are doing the best thing for the animals they have rescued and/or can no longer keep. Are there "free to a good home" ads in your local newspaper? At PETA, we routinely contact people in our area who place “free to a good home” ads and provide them with detailed information about the dangers that the ads pose as well as information about proper procedures for placing animals. Click here for more info on “free to a good home” ads.

Is Your Dog the Cutest Mutt Alive? We could go on and on about why it's better to adopt a mixed-breed dog than to buy a dog from a pet store or a breeder, but, as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. That's why we want you to send us pictures of your mutt (or mutts) for our Cutest Mutt Alive contest!
One winning dog will be featured on our Web site and mentioned in an upcoming issue of PETA's Animal Times, and his or her guardian will win bragging rights at the dog park. But even if your dog doesn't take the top prize in our contest, all mutts who find good homes are winners—and so are their guardians.
Whether from a pet store, a puppy mill, or an individual breeder, buying a dog means that an animal in an animal shelter will lose the chance to find a loving home. Purebred dogs also face a wide range of health problems because of years of inbreeding and human manipulation, while mixed-breed dogs are typically healthier than their purebred cousins. Mixed-breed dogs tend to live longer and are more unique too!
If you don't already have a canine companion but you do have time and affection to spare, you can make a difference by adopting a loving, "fixed" mutt from your local animal shelter. And who knows, maybe next year he or she will take the top prize in PETA's Cutest Mutt Alive contest!
Sorry! The contest has ended. Finalists will be selected and featured on our Web site for a public voting round starting February 20, 2009.

RELACIÓN DE LOS HECHOS DE LOS CUALES HE TENIDO CONOCIMIENTO: (ATENCIÓN: Las imágenes son extremadamente fuertes)

As nasty winter weather sets in, neglected, backyard dogs face freezing cold, snow, wind, and rain. For many of these animals, a sturdily constructed doghouse can mean the difference between life and death. That's why PETA's wonderful "Angel for Animals" program is so important. Won't you be an "angel" for a lonely dog this year?
https://ibiz.isiservices.com/peta-e/peta/donation.asp?section_code=H08W176P&ask4=--265-1325-2650-o
As an "angel" for animals, you can sponsor a specially designed and built doghouse that will provide a needy dog with shelter to see him or her through this winter--and the worst weather for many years to come.
https://ibiz.isiservices.com/peta-e/peta/donation.asp?section_code=H08W176P&ask4=--265-1325-2650-o
Your sponsorship can immediately change the life of an animal like Spook. When PETA first met Spook, this lonely black dog was shivering outside in the cold. Spook was so big that everyone in the neighborhood was afraid to go near him. Our caseworkers saw that he wasn't aggressive, just energetic and anxious to play. So we unchained him and ran around with him in the yard. We gave him treats and lots of love and attention. Unfortunately, we then had no choice but to chain Spook up again and leave him there.
When PETA can't legally remove abused or neglected dogs, we do everything that we can to make them more comfortable. So we returned to Spook with a custom-built doghouse filled with warm straw bedding—which will give him a warmer place to curl up for years to come. We also gave him a tangle-free running line, an afternoon of playtime, tummy rubs, and a good scratch behind the ears: things that mean the world to lonely backyard dogs.
Last year, PETA provided more than 400 sturdy doghouses, thanks to generous "Angel for Animals" sponsors. With many more dogs in urgent need and temperatures dropping fast, we want to top that number this year, and I hope that we can count on your support. There are so many ways that you can help, including the following:
* Your "Angel for Animals" sponsorship gift of $265 can provide a doghouse to one needy dog.
* Your "Angel for Animals" sponsorship gift of $530 can provide doghouses to two neglected dogs.
* Your "Angel for Animals" sponsorship gift of $1,325 can provide doghouses to five lonely outdoor dogs.
No matter how much you can afford to give, I urge you to respond today. I know that times are tough right now, but it is in times like these when unloved animals suffer most. Nearly all the dogs we reach with our "Angel for Animals" program live in underprivileged neighborhoods. We will fight as hard as we possibly can to ensure that these animals are not mistreated, forgotten, or ignored. Right now, these animals are facing another long winter with nowhere to hide from the stinging cold.
But you can give a doghouse to one lucky dog—likely the first "home" that he or she has ever had. Please become a PETA "Angel for Animals" doghouse sponsor today.
Thank you for helping a neglected dog this winter. Your simple act of kindness can bring one of these dear souls years of shelter, something that they all deserve.
Kind regards,
Ingrid Newkirk Ingrid E. Newkirk President
P.S. Looking for a unique and meaningful gift this holiday season? Give a doghouse sponsorship! When you do, you'll be recognizing that compassionate person as an "angel" for animals. Each "Angel for Animals" sponsorship means that one more needy dog will get a solid-wood doghouse to protect him or her from the cold—and from the summer heat and sun—for years to come.

Time to renew your PETA membership Right now, a neglected dog sits shivering in a trash-strewn back yard, exposed to the cold, the snow, and the freezing rain.

Kind regards,
Ingrid Newkirk Ingrid E. Newkirk President

Hog-Dog Rodeos: (south & midwest U.S.A.)– Just when I thought I had heard of all the ways animals are abused for “entertainment”, someone told me about this. It’s so bad I had to include it here. So-called “hog-dog rodeos” are events at which frenzied dogs, usually pit bulls, are turned loose, one or two at a time, in pens to attack wild pigs as onlookers cheer and judges rate dogs by how quickly they take down their prey. To prevent injury to the dogs, the hogs’ tusks are often first snapped off with a steel pipe and hammer or with bolt-cutters, rendering these animals completely defenseless. So much for a proud southern tradition. These events are so cruel they are illegal even in the states where they began, but still take place in the southern and midwest U.S., not exactly helping the cliche that the south is backwards and behind the times.
Hogs often sustain serious injuries during these events, including but not limited to ripped ears and haunches, mangled noses, ruptured scrotums, and other gaping wounds. Sometimes their ears are torn right off. Considered by some to be “good, wholesome fun,” children are also often allowed to gang up on the frightened pigs and chase them around the arena. This causes children to become calloused to violence, and more likely to engage in it as they grow up. Another bad side effect from this (as well as dogfighting) is that when the pit bull dogs are later abandoned, lost or given up, they are unadoptable because of their fighting tendencies. This forces shelter personell to euthanize them, an unpopular but necessary job that the former owners never give a thought about and never have to see. So how can hog-dog rodeos still take place? Despite their illegality, laws are too often loosely interpreted by local authorities and rarely enforced. In Clarke County, Alabama, for example, it was not until a local news team conducted an undercover investigation and obtained video documentation of a local hog-dog rodeo that authorities were finally compelled to arrest the organizer on cruelty-to-animals charges and shut down the event.
Who’s fighting it: PETA, HSUS, IDA, ASPCA, local humane societies.

Puppy mills: (global)– where puppies are raised, often by the hundreds, in appalling, cramped conditions (see photos), get no socialization and little medical care, then sold on the internet and shipped (often when underage) like merchandise to anywhere, often arrive sick from stress, etc. Who’s fighting it: HSUS, Best Friends, Peta, IDA, ASPCA, Stoppuppymills.org, ALV, WSPA, Noah’s Ark. A puppy mill is a large-scale commercial dog breeding operation where profit is given priority over the well-being of the dogs. Unlike responsible breeders, who place the utmost importance on producing the healthiest puppies possible, breeding at puppy mills is performed without consideration of genetic quality. This results in generations of dogs with unchecked hereditary defects.
Puppy mills usually house dogs in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, without adequate veterinary care, food, water and socialization. Puppy mill dogs do not get to experience treats, toys, exercise or basic grooming. To minimize waste cleanup, dogs are often kept in cages with wire flooring that injures their paws and legs——and it is not unusual for cages to be stacked up in columns. Breeder dogs at mills might spend their entire lives outdoors, exposed to the elements——or crammed inside filthy structures where they never get the chance to feel the sun or a gust of fresh air on their faces.
In order to maximize profits, female dogs are bred at every opportunity with little to no recovery time between litters. When, after a few years, they are physically depleted to the point that they no longer can reproduce, breeding females are often killed. The mom and dad of the puppy in the pet store window are unlikely to make it out of the mill alive——and neither will the many puppies born with overt physical problems that make them unsalable to pet stores; while the ones that are sold are often sickly and soon may die in spite of costly medical treatments. Some pet stores, like the Petland chain, have a fixed policy of lying to customers about the origins of their puppies, and often refuse to take responsibility for ones that get sick, even immediately after being sold.
The solution is obvious: never buy a pet when you can adopt one from a shelter or rescue group; there are groups for every breed and many species of animals. And remember: every one you buy means another one that could have been adopted will die in a shelter.

Action Centre Pledge to Stop Animal Homelessness
Homelessness is not just a human problem. UK animal shelters put to death thousands of cats and dogs every year because of simple mathematics: there are too many animals and not enough worthy adoptive homes. You can help prevent this – by signing your name below.
Always spay or neuter your animal companions, and never buy them from a breeder or a pet shop. For every dog purchased from a pet shop or a breeder, a dog in an animal shelter is killed. Sign the Pledge
I want to help put an end to animal homelessness. By signing my name, I pledge to support and practice animal birth control by spaying or neutering my companion animals, educating others about the importance of spaying and neutering, and never buying animals from a breeder or a pet shop.

More than 100,000 homeless dogs need your help every year – here's how.
In 2009, more than 100, 000 stray dogs were found wandering Britain's streets.
The outrage against the cruelty of the dog-breeding trade is mounting, and the time for us to act is now. The BBC has stopped televising The Kennel Club's annual dog show, Crufts, and other organisations have also ended their sponsorship.
The Kennel Club and the breeding trade's standards focus on dogs' looks. At PETA, we believe that every dog – no matter how big, small, scraggly or smooth – has the right to live free from abuse, neglect and suffering.
You can help animals like the victims of the dog-breeding trade. Please make a donation today to support PETA's vital campaigns.
You may be lucky enough to share your home with a dog or another animal whom you love dearly – but wouldn't you be distressed to think that he or she could have started life subjected to abuse and neglect at the hands of greedy and unscrupulous breeders?
With so many dogs already waiting for loving homes in rescue centres, there is no need for the dog-breeding trade to continue to produce litter after litter of puppies. We need to act now.
According to alarming recent statistics, more than 100,000 dogs were found wandering alone on Britain's streets last year – a massive 11 per cent increase over the previous figures.
There is no hope without action. Please take these two important steps today:
1. Donate online now to support our vital campaigns and help us fight against the root causes of the animal overpopulation crisis.
https://rsm2.rsmsecure.com/cpterminal/cpweb.php
2. Pledge to always adopt animals from rescue centres and never to buy from breeders or pet shops.
http://action.peta.org.uk/ea-campaign/clientcampaign.do?ea.client.id=5&ea.campaign.id=1816&ea.url.id=28417&ea.campaigner.email=H1+UZC/1oq38EpGe0Cp+m6Sy3fY/l6hn2t8RM2eLScw=&ea_broadcast_target_id=0&forwarded=true
The family picking out a puppy from a pet shop window or from a breeder wouldn't dream that the fate of abandoned dogs in rescue centres has anything to do with them – but it does. Their purchase feeds the demand for more animals (a demand that breeders and shops are all too happy to supply), and every time someone buys an animal instead of adopting, an animal in a shelter loses his or her chance for a home. It's basic math.
PETA and our affiliates have an impressive track record of victories on behalf of animals and have been instrumental in persuading a host of companies, such as Marks and Spencer, Selfridges and Burger King, to rethink how their actions affect animals. We've influenced policy on the local, national and international levels, and we've been instrumental in educating the public through hard-hitting publicity campaigns and media-garnering demonstrations.
With the backing of caring people like you, we can save dogs from the horrors of the breeding trade and the death sentence of homelessness. Please always adopt and never buy. Thank you for caring.
I hope you will stand by us once again to expose the horrors of the dog-breeding trade. Today, please make an online donation of as much as you can afford and help us ensure that we can continue our work on behalf of all animals.
Dog breeders and pet shops add even more animals to the already out-of-control animal overpopulation crisis.
PETA is working to encourage the public never to buy from breeders or pet shops and always to spay or neuter their animal companions, and we're doing it with the same urgency and determination that we bring to all our work to protect animals, whether they're trapped on factory farms, on fur farms, in laboratories or in circuses. And as with all those endeavours, our work will only succeed with the support of caring people like you.
Please support PETA by making a generous gift today and help strengthen our work to help animals.

How You Can Help Animals in China Today
It's time to shut down the chinese fur industry
Right now, in cramped, filthy cages on fur farms throughout China, millions of vulnerable animals await a painful death. It may come from strangulation by a wire noose or a knife slash across the throat.
We need your help to stop the carnage taking place on fur farms around the world, including the slaughter of nearly 2 million cats and hundreds of thousands of dogs each year in China. Donate Now The skin is then ripped off their broken and abused bodies and will be turned into fur-trimmed hats, jackets, gloves, and other items—items that you will find on the shelves of department stores this fall.
For the Chinese fur industry—one of the world's largest suppliers of animal fur—this isn't just about fur coats. The result of the suffering of animals in China may be creeping into consumers' daily lives right now, often without their even knowing it. You can help us protect animals killed for their skin and stop the fur industry in its tracks by making a special gift today to support PETA's unique and vital work to end animal abuse.
https://secure.peta.org/site/Donation2?df_id=2020&2020.donation=form1&set.custom.Campaign_Code=I10AWAXXXXG&autologin=true/peta/donation.asp
The ways that the suffering caused by the fur industry appear in the lives of otherwise compassionate consumers is insidious. It may come in the form of a toy purchased for a cat at a pet-supply store—a toy that could be made from the skin of another cat who was stolen, loaded in a crate onto a truck with thousands of other cats, forced to endure days of suffering while being transported to a slaughterhouse in northern China, and then cruelly beaten and skinned. But the label won't tell you that.
Or those little fur tassels on a pair of gloves. Those might be the fur of a German shepherd or a chow chow, who was once loved and cherished—and then was one day kidnapped and sold at the local animal market. After days without water or food and after being beaten repeatedly, the dog was painfully killed and stripped of skin. Did the label mention that?
The fur industry is so desperate to push its cruel wares that it has even stooped to lying to unsuspecting consumers, intentionally mislabeling fur garments as fake—or as coming from rabbits or other animals when they're actually from cats and dogs. The fact is that it takes expensive DNA tests to prove what kind of animal was killed to make each piece of fur trim, coat collar, glove lining, cat toy, or furry trinket. So as you can imagine, these tests are rarely, if ever, done.
PETA is leading the fight against the fur trade—both in China and worldwide—and we're making significant progress. Through our thought-provoking campaigns and groundbreaking undercover investigations, we're getting major designers and retailers like Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Liz Claiborne Inc., Polo Ralph Lauren, and Tommy Hilfiger to swear off using fur in their collections. But none of what we do is possible without your support.
That's why I hope you will make a generous donation today to help us call attention to the horrors that animals killed for their skins endure and work to shut down this violent and bloody trade for good.
Together, we can help the dogs, cats, rabbits, and countless other individual animals who are suffering on fur farms in China and around the world.
Even as more and more consumers reject fur, a desperate fur industry is trying come back by pushing its bloody trade through cat toys, fur trim, and other products created from the same kind of suffering that goes into every fur coat. Won't you help us stand up to this challenge and fight for all animals killed for their skin by making a tax-deductible donation right now?

Dogs Deserve Better, Inc.
Thayne Chained to Doghouse at PA Capitol to Win Law for Chained Dogs! She just finished her seventh day today, chained in front of the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg, Pa. How has it been? Hot, and horrible.
But she's sticking it out, both for the dogs AND the children who end up victims of angry, unsocialized chained dogs.
For must-read daily blog articles, to see media coverage, and to donate for this most-worthy campaign, visit the site at http://www.fidosfreedom.com
Thayne's Open Letter to PA State Legislators:
Knock, knock. I’m here for the law for the chained dogs? You’ve probably just been busy. I know how that goes, I’ve been busy too. But thing is, here we are almost at the end of another legislative session, and the dogs still have no law to protect them.
It’s not right.
So I’ve come to remind you.
I’m here for their law.
I intend to stay awhile, and I’m hoping that, together, we can get this thing done. Time is short, and they’ve suffered enough.
Yeah, I know I should be doing other things. A million other things, like having a life, working on other Dogs Deserve Better campaigns. Rescuing chained dogs, one at a time, from those few who see the light or want a convenient place to dump their garbage. Even spending time with my family would be nice. Dinner for Schmucks just came out this week—it looks really funny—and the Carmike near my house has $1.00 sodas on Tuesday.
But, I can’t get away from the nagging thought that they’ve still got nothing. We’ve waited six years for a law for them. Through HB1911, HB1065, HB1254, the Casorio/Caltigirone bill we were promised but never materialized this March, and now SB1435. It’s been exhausting!
And yet, here we are still without a tool to help them, and they are still suffering. Many waited their entire lives for help that never came, and have now turned to dust, having never known a kind word or the kiss of love.
Maybe it doesn’t matter to you, but it matters to me, it matters to the majority of Pennsylvania dog lovers, and most importantly, it matters to them.
Have I mentioned yet how the chained dogs are suffering? As they suffer, I have decided to bring their suffering to you, because maybe you just have been too busy to notice. I'm sure if you did notice it, did comprehend the pain of living as they live day in and day out, you'd have taken the necessary action to end it by now.
As they remain shackled to one grassless spot 24 hours each day, I will stay chained in front of OUR Capitol (Yes, I believe the Capitol belongs to me too) for ten hours Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. As they go without food and water, so will I fast each week from Monday through Friday. And as they are subjected to the elements, so will I be drenched when it rains, wilt in the summer heat, and shiver in the cold of approaching winter.
So that you may begin to really UNDERSTAND their suffering, I am bringing it to you. Let’s get this thing done. I’m here for their law. —Tamira Ci Thayne, founder and CEO, Dogs Deserve Better
Can you donate for this campaign? Today Thayne got 10 media interviews! The dog's voices are being heard! Please support the campaign at http://www.fidosfreedom.com

Because of you, we are able to fight against abuse, wherever it may be
Our pets provide us with something that most of us seek in all of our relationships: unconditional love.
Challenged by one of the toughest economies in years to maintain our commitment to save the lives of at-risk animals, we asked for your support and you made the difference.
Our goal is to reduce the number of animals entering community shelters and increase the number of animals who leave shelters alive.
We are proud to report that, in spite of the recession, your donations increased adoptions by as much as 12% throughout the ASPCA's partner communities.
The ASPCA® continues to advance our crusade to end animal cruelty.
Thanks to your support, we carried our commitment of preventing animal cruelty to new heights in 2009. Your unwavering dedication to fight cruelty allowed us to present testimony for 20 court cases, conduct 75 anti-cruelty workshops, consult on 320 cruelty cases and distribute more than $200,000 in emergency and disaster grants. Because of you, we are able to fight against abuse, wherever it may be!
We are their voice®—animals across the country depend on us—and we’ve spent the past year living up to our promise to save more animals than ever before.
Our 2009 successes demonstrate how you helped the ASPCA make enormous strides toward our goals of preventing animal cruelty and finding forever homes for America's adoptable pets. Thank you for making 2009 an exceptional year for the ASPCA and the animals we serve!

CAN YOU HELP?
YOUR HELP NEEDED FOR EMERGENCY Posted by Precious Paws at 2:23am on August 8th, 2010 Last week Precious Paws was threatened by fire twice.
First scare is where we keep the majority of our rescues and then a second scare where we house many more of our rescues. On the latter we did a precautionary evacuation. The fire at one point was a half a mile away from us and we wanted to be safe not sorry.
We were very blessed that where the majority of our rescues are living we didn't have to evacuate because we were ill prepared in the carrier area, we had the manpower and vehicles to evacuate, but not the carriers. We are in dire dire need of many many carriers. We have to be prepared and we are not. This was our wake up call.
If you would like to help us to purchase carriers for our rescues or if you have any carriers you would like to donate, we would be most grateful.
The picture shown here I took during the fire in our neighborhood, you might have heard about the Crown fire on the news, well we saw it first hand!
Here is our Paypal link for carrier donations:

Please Be an 'Angel' for a Hot, Miserable Dog Dear Friend,
If you have a dog, you probably know how frightened our canine companions get during thunderstorms—and how quickly they overheat on scorching summer days. But "outdoor" dogs, who have all the same feelings as the dogs who live in our homes with us, are far more vulnerable to extreme weather. As the heat of August intensifies, neglected backyard dogs—who are stuck on a chain somewhere and basically forgotten—face soaring temperatures, the scorching sun, energy-sapping humidity, and the wind and pounding rains of frightening and powerful summer thunderstorms.
A sturdy doghouse with an overhanging roof may not sound like much, but for many dogs it is a big deal. It provides the shade that can mean the difference not only between abject misery and a little comfort but also between life and death. It can be a place to run to when the first thunderclap sounds. That's why PETA's "Angels for Animals" program is so wonderful—and so very important.
Can I count on you to be an "angel" for a lonely, unfortunate dog like Pit or Chow this summer?
Your sponsorship can immediately change the life of animals like Chow and Pit. When PETA's fieldworker first found these two sorely neglected dogs, their North Carolina owner (no, I can't bring myself to write "guardian" in this context) had had them for more than a year but had been too lazy and apathetic even to name them. He simply called them "Chow" and "Pit" after their breeds.
Each of these sweet dogs was held to a stake in the yard by a thick, heavy chain around the neck. They were confined within a dirt circle that was created by their own movement. This small patch of dirt was their world. The dogs had no way of escaping their "prison yard." Pit's only shelter was a plastic barrel, which was wet inside from the blowing rain. Chow had a flimsy and grossly inadequate plastic doghouse to call "home." (Plastic doghouses are like ovens in the summertime, and Chow was forced to choose between baking alive inside the doghouse or broiling alive outside it.) Both dogs had dug holes in an effort to cool their stomachs and escape the relentless summer heat.
The fact is, some people cannot afford to take proper care of their dogs and cats, while others have no clue how to or just plain don't care if the dog lives or dies. Sometimes, PETA can legally remove neglected animals, and we do that. We also bring criminal charges against their owners. But more often than not, woefully inadequate or non-existent animal protection laws prevent us from taking such actions, and law-enforcement authorities basically say, "If the dog dies, you can charge them with a crime, but not until then." That's why we educate, educate, educate and why we do everything humanly possible to help reduce these dogs' daily suffering and keep an eye on them afterwards. We returned to check on Chow and Pit, and when we did, we gave each of them a sturdy, weatherproof PETA doghouse and bedding. The doghouses provided Chow and Pit with some urgently needed shade and protection from intense thunderstorms, which are common in North Carolina on summer afternoons.
Since we started our doghouse program, PETA has distributed more than 4,700 doghouses. These doghouses have made a world of difference to suffering outdoor dogs, thanks to our generous, compassionate sponsors. There are many more dogs out there in urgent need of shelter, and temperatures are at or near their yearly highs. I very much hope that we can count on your sponsorship.
Nearly all the dogs we reach with our program live in deeply underprivileged neighborhoods, rundown trailer parks, and the like. I promise you that PETA will fight as hard as we can to make sure that these dogs are not mistreated, forgotten, or ignored and that we will take as many sick or injured animals home with us as we can. For the sake of all these dogs, I urge you to give as much as you can afford—even a dollar will help.
Thank you so very much for coming to the rescue of a sorely neglected dog this summer. Your simple act of kindness can provide one of these dear animals with years of shelter, which will help them endure everything from bitter winters to scorching-hot summers.
Kind regards,

Fred O'Regan Directeur Général d'IFAW
P.S. Merci !
