Man Arrested For Rescuing Dogs From Abandoned Home

An animal advocate in Los Angeles was arrested on Thursday after trying to rescue two dogs that were locked inside a foreclosed home because Animal Services was worried about getting sued.



Neighbors said that when the owners of the home left, they took all of their belongings except their two dogs. A six-month old puppy was locked inside the house and another dog named Taz was left inside the garage.



Next door neighbor Elisa Woods became concerned for the well-being of the dogs when the temperature "got hotter" and "they were getting hungrier," so she called for help.



L.A. Animal Services responded to her call and came with food and water, which they shoved through an open window in the house and slipped under a 2 inch opening in the garage. But the officers "didn't enter the home."



According to NBC news, the city is required to give a written warning to the owners before entering the home or removing the dogs. The owners have 24 hours to fix the problem.



Animal Services Officer Hoang Dinh said, "Possibility the people could come back and then they could turn this around and sue the city."



Their actions, or lack or action "wasn't good enough for animal rescuer Hans Petersen" who is with LA Animal Rescue Org.



He went inside the house and a few minutes later walked out with the puppy.



But before he could help Taz, LAPD arrived on the scene and arrested Petersen for "interfering with Animal Services as they conduct their duties."


The puppy was taken to the South L.A. Animal Shelter, but Taz was left behind in the garage.


There is no word about how long the dogs had been abandoned or if their owners had left them with any food or water.

On Monday, officers responded to a call about a German shepherd puppy that got himself stuck in a cinder block wall. Rebel the puppy must have thought the hole was beckoning him in some way. Maybe he was chasing a small animal – we’ll never know for sure.

When his head got stuck in the wall and he could not help himself, he whimpered until he got someone's attention. Rebel's owner wasn't home at the time, but her friend was and called RCDAS for help.

“My initial reaction was, ‘Wow, how'd he get in there?’” Riverside County Animal Services Sgt. James Huffman said. “And why is there a hole that big in the wall?”

After checking Rebel's breathing and determining it was in no danger, Sgt. James Huffman and Officer Hector Palafox each took one side of the dog and tried to ease him out. The entire rescue took about 30 minutes. Noticing blood on Rebel’s face and the wall, they wondered why the dog had kept on pushing his way through.

Huffman and Palafox knew Rebel was working with them. The pup understood they were trying to help him and cooperated any way he could. "He let us know if we were pushing too hard – but he kept working right along with us," Sgt. Huffman said. "He helped a lot. You could see his hind legs stiffen to assist in the direction we were going. He knew we were there to save him."

Sgt. Huffman planned on stopping by the next day to discuss covering the hole with chicken wire for future prevention of a similar accident.

Rebel's rescue was dramatic enough, but then on Tuesday, RCDAS received a call about a quarter horse gelding named Mack that was stuck in some serious mud.

Bill Smith, Health Director for Robeson County said it was a mistake when a puppy wasn’t properly euthanized, but was tossed into a landfill with other dead cats and dogs.



He doesn’t understand why local animal rights groups are upset with the shelter.



Bill Smith said in an interview with the Fayetteville Observer, “We had one animal, a puppy that the veterinarian did not euthanize.”



“It was one incident. It was a mistake. I wish it wouldn’t have happened. We ended up coming back and euthanizing the animal a few hours later anyway,” continued Smith.



Apparently veterinarian Curt Locklear, who oversees euthanasia at the Robeson County Animal Shelter sedated the puppy, but forgot to comeback and inject the fatal drugs to kill it.



Past Problems

Animal welfare advocate Susan Barrett disagrees with Smith about this being a one-time incident. She said there have been several cases of live animals found among the dead as they were delivered to the landfill.



Barrett keeps watch on the shelter and brought charges against them earlier this year for inadequate care of the animals.



The Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services found about a dozen code violations including inadequate veterinary care, improperly stored food, untreated rodent infestations and crowded cat cages.



Barrett dropped the lawsuit after the Board of Health promised to make the necessary improvements. The agency also pledged to hire new management and work more closely with rescue groups that could provide homes for the animals.



After this latest incident Barrett may re-open the lawsuit.



She said, “The point is being missed by the county here. They say, ‘Well, anyone can make a mistake with one animal.’ “Well, no they can’t. One is too many. And it’s not just the one, not just the two, not just the three. This is happening way too often.”



And what about the puppy found at the dump and subjected to euthanasia a second time? Shouldn’t it have been given a reprieve for cruel and unusual punishment?

Forget going to the gym or learning Italian. 2009 is the year to let your dog make your resolutions for you. After all, your pup’s life-long endeavor is to be your loving pet and loyal companion—the least you can do this year is bring an extra wag or two to his world. Besides, his resolutions will have you both feeling great, and the best part is, none involve spandex, spinning classes, or low-fat butter.

I resolve to take quality walks.
Chances are, your pup never says no to a walk, even if it’s the same old stroll up the block and back. But know that your dog craves new scents and sounds as much as you enjoy new scenery. So mix up your weekday walks with new routes, unfamiliar trails, and uncharted side streets and explore new neighborhoods and parks on the weekends. Better yet, research dog-friendly hiking spots in your area and venture somewhere new once a month.

I resolve to give fewer hugs, play more.
Maybe you’ve noticed that squirmy, help-let-me-out wriggle your dog does during what you consider to be a loving embrace. Unlike us primates, dogs don’t feel all reassured and gooey inside after a nice long hug. In fact, most likely they feel trapped—it’s just a canine thing. A hearty round of tug however, played appropriately, can be a huge stress reliever and a nice bit of exercise as well. Note: If you intend to make tug a permanent activity in your repertoire, “drop it” is an important command to know.

resolve to regularly introduce “new” toys into the mix.
Remember, they don’t have to be store-bought new, just new to your pup—that is, something he hasn’t seen before (or at least in a very long time). So swap toys with your dog-owning friends and neighbors so that every few weeks there’s something new for Fido to chase, charge, or chew on.

I resolve to throw a party.
We’re not (necessarily) talking about a fancy birthday fete or a bark mitzvah—though those are fun, too. A rendezvous with a couple of his favorite people—or at least people who adore him—will do. Play a few of his preferred games or simply ask invitees to practice a couple basic commands with him. It’s a chance for your dog to get praised, treated, and rewarded by someone else—great for socialization and a real boon to his confidence.
I resolve to bond outside the home.
Agility classes may just be the perfect combination of mental stimulation, physical activity, and most important, team building between you and your best friend. Dogs and humans both have a ball. But if weave poles and tire hoops seem too daunting, consider a Canine Good Citizen class, a program designed by the AKC (and offered in cities across the country) to promote responsible ownership and well-mannered dogs. You’ll brush up on your training techniques and your dog gets a refresher course in good behavior.

Lori Baxter confirmed that on at least two occassions last month, live animals had been improperly euthanized by an outsourced veterinarian and shipped to the dump in trucks containing the bodies of dead pets.



The county had been paying Curt Locklear DVM to euthanize cats and dogs at the shelter. On both occassions last month, Locklear had sedated the puppies, but forgot to inject them with the euthanizing drugs.



Baxter said the shelter will take over euthanasia responsibilites in-house and she will personally oversee the process.



Baxter said she is trying hard to fix the problems at Robeson shelter and asks for the public's patience.

Obama adds himself to Michael Vick's ignorant / illiterate fan base.
The big push by Michael Vick supporters is "double eged". (a) to have people believe "he did his time",, and (b) he should be forgiven /or given a second chance.

(a) It is surprising how few people know the facts in the Michael Vick Case. Everyone thinks he went to jail for "dog fighting" or animal cruelty. (see for yourself,, just ask someone) Please inform the UN-informed that he went to jail on RACKETEERING charges. The animal cruelty charge was dismissed as part of the plea bargain agreement. HE SERVED NO JAIL TIME FOR WHAT HE DID TO THE DOGS. Who CARES about racketeering?... Pffff... People all over the world that have any sense of moral value CARE ONLY about the dogs he SYSTEMATICALLY TORTURED, mutilated, electrocuted, drowned, hung, bludgeoned, and shot to death... AND ALL FOR THE SHEER PLEASURE OF IT.

(B) "second chance" .. hideous torture of innocent / defenseless animals is NEVER FORGIVABLE. (even by our racist President) Only crimes against "human" society can be forgiven by humans. To think otherwise is sheer stupidity.

Michael Vick is an Inter-species sadist / sociopath. Mental health professionals will all tell you that sociopaths CAN NEVER show remorse and CAN NEVER be rehabilitated. What this means is that Michael Vick will ALWAYS enjoy animal torture. Only the opportunity has been subdued or otherwise "not available" at the moment.

Please Dear God, don't ever give up the fight against this "disgrace to humanity". Keep boycotting those sponsors and please invite ALL your friends to join this cause.

THE GREATER GOOD
You know, I've been doing some more thinking and the thinking I'm doing has brought me to this: Sometimes I tell myself that I'm NOT doing enough to help our furbabies...I see postings all the time on my wall about a dog or kittie who needs a home...or I'll hear a story that just breaks my heart and gives me nightmares. I get overwhelmed with the maddness! So, I must bring it into perspective for myself...I am only ONE person...just one...my gift for our animals is to advocate for their Absolute Right to die at home. We, each of us, has our own unique gifts that we use in fighting for animal rights. It takes all of us! But, it takes each one of us, to act separately, using our unique gift to make a change in this world. We are UNITED as ONE in that we share in the same dream...a better world for our furbabies; but for me, personally, to do a good job at what I do, I must give it my whole heart and my whole attention. It's kinda like our physical body....when we are united as ONE...this is our body...when we act separately, we are like our hearts and our lungs...our hands and our feet. What good would the body be if it had no heart or no lungs? What good would the lungs be if they had no body to serve their purpose? Yes, it takes ALL of us, each and every ONE of us to do our part for the welfare of our furanimals. Then, we shall become united for the Greater Good...the ultimate purpose...the safety and welfare of our animals. We, my friends, are the caretakers of our Mother...our Earth.

Do you remember that Doctor Death who killed illegally almost 5,000 dogs in three years in the Prahova county, and her activity has horrified even the news papers ?...OK...The Police from the town where she manages the shelter for strays DID NOT YET SENT THE FILE TO PROSECUTION...meantime, NOW during the holiday season...the Mayor of Campina and this 'veterinarian" have decided to KILL ALL THE STRAYS....she doesn't even euthanises them...the dogs die in the most horrific way at HER HANDS....PLEASE...Take 2 minutes to send the letter > Please help us stop her and stop the police to COVER up her crimes.

I hope that Mr. Mihai Atanasoaei, The Prefect of Bucharest will decide to stop promoting the killing of strays in Bucharest and in Romania....but, until the Legislative Initiative for the Modification and Completion of OUG.155/2001 ( approved already by the Romanian Senate ) registered pl.X 912/19/12/2007. is not approved I will refrain from visiting Romania and I will share my thoughts and opinions about the way Romania treats animals, with all my friends and family and I will advise them not to visit Romania in the near future.

Horrible abuse and crimes against animals in the PRAHOVA COUNTY in Romania . Please help !

The horror continues in the Prahova county - Romania - Not only a veterinarian ! is accused of killing almost 5,000 dogs ( because the mayors asked her....)BUT, in all municipal shelters in that county not only the public access is denied but even the Police and The Sanitary Veterinary County's Agency...As you can see in some photos, those dogs live in MUD, they are starved, they are mistreated , and THEIR FOOD ( give away food from restaurants, food stores etc ) IS STOLEN FROM THEM, by the employees of the shelter ...cheese, meats, bread, etc...and they got caught on camera...and apparently, based on the people' comments in the articles the wife of the veterinarian of the shelter ( Dr. Chiritescu - ) also brings some fruit and vegetable from the zoo animals where she works as a vet....because the shelter is on the same compound as the zoo...We ask in this letter, that all THESE PEOPLE, all of them, from the top to bottom, and vice versa be investigated and prosecuted at the FULL EXTEND of the laws.
Please take 3 minutes to copy/paste/send the letter...to all emails in the same time...Please do not send separate emails...it will take far too long. We also ask the FULL ACCESS TO ALL MUNICIPAL SHELTERS IN THE COUNTY FOR all associations for the protection of animals, all the time...to do volunteer work and to make sure that the dogs are taken care off...

Les horreurs continuent dans la region de Prahova Roumania.Non seulement un veterinaire ( dr.Emilia Herescu) est accuse d'avoir tue plus de5000 chiens, parceque les maires le lui ont demande ( comme si l'ordre d'un maire est au dessus de la lois !)...mais l'access dans tous les refuges de la region est interdit, non seulement au public, mais aussi a la Police et a l"Autorite veterinaire de la region...comme s'il saggissait d'un secret d'etat...
Voyez dans les photos et les liens fournis les conditions dans les quelles ces pauvres chiens vivent...de la boue, pas d'eau, pas de nourriture...blesses...affames, malades...PARCEQUE, nous vennons tout juste d'appndre que les employes du "refuge" VOLAIENT la nourriture donnes pour les animaux par des restaurants, magazins alimentairs, etc...: fromage, jambons, pain...et en plus, la femme du docteur du refuge, apparement, selon les conversations dans les commentaires dans les journaux, avait access aux fruits et aux legumes dedies aux animaux du ZOO...parce que le refuge se situe dans le meme endroit que le ZOO ...sous la meme administration..
Nous demandons dans la lettre , d'abord que toutes les personnes nommees dans les journaux d'avoir tue, affame, maltraite les animaux soit deferrees en justice et les procureurs demandent les sanctions les plus severes selons les lois...et , que tous les refuges municipaux de la region soient ouverts aux associations de la protection animale de la region, afin que les gens qui veulent aider puissent y aller et aussi pour pouvoir controler tout le temps l'activite dans ces refuges.

I was very disturbed and disappointed by the news coming from Romania, the Prahova County, about the treatment of stray dogs...It is incomprehensible how a veterinarian who took a vow "not to harm" animals, is capable of killing thousands of dogs with cold blood...

It is horrifying to see the "living "conditions for the dogs...to find out that animals are left to starve, to eat one another, in the mud, no water, and above all it is DISGUSTING to find out that people PAID with salaries to care for these animals, STOLE their food...how can ANY HUMAN BEING with a heart and conscience STEAL the food of an animal ?...How is it possible for people ( veterinarians ) trained to HELP ANIMALS IN NEED harm them...

Why is the access to the shelter denied to animal protection associations, or to the Police, or to the DSV ?...WHY...what do they have to HIDE?...

In the best interest for the reputation of your country, county and cities, please take all the necessary measures to investigate honestly, to prosecute at the full extend of the Romanian laws, those who committed crimes against animals, did not provide shelter , water and food, as required by the law, stole food from the animals ( in the shelter and/or in the zoo), regardless of WHO they are...politically, socially, locally, etc.

Please allow permanent access to all the municipal shelters to all the animal protection associations in your county.

I hope that Romania will decide once and for all to implement not only its OWN LAWS but also the international treaties and conventions which were signed, ratified and entered into force.

I also hope and pray that Mr. Vlad Catalin and Mr. Mircea Chiritescu WILL NOT TAKE REVENGE on the poor dogs in the shelter on the to city of Ploiesti...apparently Mr. Chiritescu took a community dog, the next day after the news about the stealing of food appeared in the news paper...This would be the ultimate abject action...retaliate on an innocent animal...

Please take a look ( again ) at those terrifying news posted in the Romanian media and please reflect upon the best decision to solve this matter.

Urgent Help Needed for the Dogs at Speranta!

A few days ago we received an emergency call for help from the animal shelter Speranta in Bucharest.Home to over 400 dogs, the shelter is funded by private individuals who pay for the well-being of these animals out of their own pocket. As the cold winter sets in, the number of dogs in need is rapidly increasing, day by day. Space for newcomers is now limited and food and medicinal supplies for the malnourished, freezing and injured animals are low.

Due to the lack of supplies, the dogs are often fed bread for several days at a time. FOUR PAWS is providing dog food and medicine to help the animals through the winter. However, we urgently need your support to give the dogs at Speranta a chance to survive. 'Speranta' means 'Hope' in Romanian - your donations will give hope to these poor dogs when they need it most.

Message from our President
Hello,

I want to first thank everyone for their support of Help Save One which has been incredible. With your help we have successfully rescued and placed over 1,000 shelter dogs and saved their lives. We could not of done it without you. We are a very strong and resilient organization and are about to embark on another challenge. Our supporters are like family to us so I felt it necessary to be open and honest that I was diagnosed with cancer yesterday and we need your help now more than ever. We are NOT closing our doors or even thinking about it but what we need is help with immediate foster homes (short and long term is fine), networking our dogs, monetary donations, transport help, and any time you can offer us to help us through this.

I worked on Help Save One full time which I will now not be able to do since I will be going through cancer treatment. The other board members and myself are working to make HSO smaller and more manaegable to prepare for the upcoming months.

Since we will not be pulling any dogs or are able to fundraise right now we could use donations to help with the care of the dogs and also finish up paying outstanding bills. My goal is to get everything in place and running on a smaller scale so I can focus on what is ahead of me. Our biggest challenge right now is foster homes as we are moving many dogs today and tomorrow and need the help. Please consider opening your heart and home to a foster dog.

I'VE BEEN DOING SOME MORE THINKING
And the "thinking" I've been doing has reminded me that we have many new members in Smudggie's Cause. My HOPE is that we all share in the common belief... our furbabies ABSOLUTE RIGHT to pass to the bridge at home...where they have lived, loved in, and protected for all their years. Why would we abandon them during their final moments on this earth...why would we take them on that "final car ride" to the vet....why would we betray them; I ask us...WHY? The answer is...WE WOULD NOT. We must provide for them a safe haven for passage...and that haven is their home...their sanctuary. I ask that, those who do not have a vet who will come to your home, demand it; if they do not listen to you, get a different one who is more compassionate. I picture myself...many years ago, when I would take my dog to the vet for clinical euthensia...WHAT A HORRIFIC ORDEAL that was. First, I felt tremendous guilt because I thought I was deceiving my baby (my baby might have thought he was going for a ride in the car)...second, when my baby is in pain, why would I attempt to put him in a car and cause unnessary stress on him when his body is aching; third, and most important for me, WHY would I betray my furbaby when I love him soooo much. MY babies WILL DIE AT HOME...peacefully and gracefully and with DIGNITY.

Florida: Ban Greyhound Racing In 2011

The state of Florida is one of only seven states in the U.S. that still allows the "sport" of greyhound racing to continue within its borders. Recently, in Ebro, Florida, a racetrack owner was arrested on suspicion of having killed at least 32 of his dogs. The racing park in Ebro is also under investigation on suspicion of animal neglect and cruelties, as many of the dogs are left to suffer when the racing season is not underway.
While the Florida legislature has, in the past, worked to prop up this failing industry, it is long past due for them to take steps to get rid of it entirely. Let the lawmakers in the Sunshine State know that you want to see an end to this cruel form of entertainment.

The suffering of the dogs far outweighs any entertainment or financial benefit to the state: racing Greyhounds generally are confined to cages when not competing and injuries such as broken legs and paralysis are commonplace.

The Florida Legislature has a history of passing economic measures aimed at propping up the failing Greyhound racing industry. It is high time for your elected officials to take a hard look at dog racing and take steps to rid Florida of it entirely.

SMUDGGIE'S LIFE CHAPTER IV
As we know, there are only a few chapters left in Smudggie's Life here on earth. These last few will be the hardest for me to write as there are NO words to describe the deep emotions I experienced while caring for her. As I said in Chapter VIII, I became the protector rather than the protected. I loved her more than I loved myself...it becomes a selfless love that we have.
Smudggie's world became totally black around her. She was blind. This caused in her a feeling of total vulnerability. She no longer wanted to go outside...when she did go, I was right there beside her with my voice to calm her. When she was inside the house, she would call for me with a WOOF woof.....the one WOOF was loud, the other very soft and gentle. I interrpreted this as "Where are you mommie"...I can't see you."
My sister told me, after Smudggie died, that my mom used to tell her that Smudggie and I could read each others minds. Well, this is true. And now, it became more TRUE than ever before. I needed to recognize Smudggie's "needs" before she did.
I took Smudggie to the vet, one day, to get a status on her from their point of view. Smudggie had a sore on her underbelly which had newly developed. The vet told me that Smudggie had cancer....that most people put their dogs to sleep at this time. I told her NO...that I would NOT do that...that I would take her home and care for her there. The vet told me "This type of cancer spreads very rapidly...when the time comes for you to let Smudggie go to God, we will come to your home to help her pass." I asked if Smudggie was suffering...she said that she didn't think so...I asked for pain medicine...she gave me some. So, my arthritic, blind, diabetic and cancerous doggie and I went home to start our journey to the Bridge.

Dogs Left Out in the Cold by Harrison County Officials

.You can't call the Harrison County Dog Pound in Cadiz, Ohio a "shelter." For one thing, it doesn't have exterior walls. (In case you're wondering, it's about 27 degrees Fahrenheit in Cadiz today, with a prediction of snow showers later tonight.) They can't even use water to clean the cages for fear of ice, and the dogs suffer from frostbite.

If this was a facility just doing its best to get by in a small, poverty-stricken town, that would be bad enough. But this place also doesn't meet the definition of shelter as a place of refuge. The conditions are appalling. Water bowls are left to freeze over, kennels are left filthy, the deadly parvovirus runs rampant and the animals apparently don't receive vet care. Stacy Skinner, a volunteer, told a local news station that the county wants her banned from the pound for trying to help the animals.

In September, the Ohio SPCA filed a lawsuit against county commissioners and former dog wardens for operating a substandard facility. The lawsuit alleges that not only are the conditions unsanitary and inhumane, but the facility isn't open enough for people to adopt or claim lost dogs.

Once the local news footage got out, animal lovers across the nation were rightly appalled. Especially after they heard that the county's solution was to euthanize all the dogs.

Alyssa Milano heard about the situation and contacted Tonic, who called friends at The Gentle Barn, a California-based animal sanctuary. Jay Weiner, President of The Gentle Barn, hopped on a plane, rented a van and rescued the remaining 10 dogs; around 20 dogs had already been put down. The ten dogs are getting vet care, socialization, and a warm place to stay, but they still need homes.

Those dogs are safe, but this is far from over. Despite all the outcry, the freezing temperatures, and the clear inability to care for animals, the pound is still accepting new dogs.

While the law says that the county must maintain a dog pound facility that is suitable and sufficiently staffed, the Appalachian Ohio SPCA says neither of those things are happening. "Harrison County government clearly does not have any interest in helping the suffering animals," the organization wrote on their Facebook page, where they're keeping people updated on the situation.

Harrison County Commissioner, Mike Vinka, told NEWS9 that "We are a dog pound, not an animal shelter." As if that's an excuse. But that's the kind of attitude that's allowed this suffering to go on for so long.

The Appalachian Ohio SPCA wants to see the facility shut down and an independently operated shelter established in the community ... presumably with all the bells and whistles, like walls and employees who actually care about the animals.

But local officials have been brushing them off, silencing them at county commission meetings and ignoring the repeated reports of cruelty and neglect filed with the sheriff's office and the county prosecutor.

Help the animals of Harrison County and the activists who are fighting for them by calling on the County Prosecutor and the Attorney General to investigate the dog pound and the county commissioners running it, and to prosecute those found responsible for the neglect to the full extent of the law.

SMUDGGIE'S LIFE CHAPTER X
When the vet said to me, "Most people put their dogs down at this point, Cheryl", a fire rose up inside of me. I looked her straight in the eye and said, "Smudggie will die at home." She said, "... the cancer will pop open and it will ooze all over everything, on your furniture...on your floors..it will be hard to control." I said, "It doesn't matter...I will cover the furniture...I will wash the floors...I will bandage her wounds." The more she spoke, the more determined I became to see this through to the Bridge. We left there with the promise that, if it became too unbearable, they would come to my house for Smudggie. I thanked them and Smudggie and I rode home. We sat down in the living room...Smudggie and me...I told her that we were "in this together" and that I would never, never betray her...not now...especially not now! The next day, I prepared for what was coming. It was a blessing! Everything I needed came to me, mostly for free. I received blankets...gauze pads...bandages...diapers...Oh God! Thank You, Dear God! I bought antibiotic cream, eye wash, baby soap...calming oils...and on and on. We were ready. Each day I watched my girl for signs of pain...there was none. She was happy...she was smiling. Her skin had become soft and supple now...something that happens in old age..I loved carressing it and she loved it much more. She couldn't see her mommie anymore, so my voice became her guide. I talked with her constantly...she felt calm. Every morning we had a ritual; I would wash both of our faces with warm water..then, put eyedrops in Smudggie's. I would then feed her a breakfast of soft food (she could no longer eat the hard kibble). Then, she would lie on the floor and rest. Still, I saw no sign of pain. Then I began to wonder "What would I do if the pain became too intense? What would I do?" I discovered that dogs could take morphine for pain. I called my vet and asked for some. She said "NO!" I prayed and I prayed and I prayed for a way to get this medicine. One day, a woman approached me and asked how I was doing. I felt comfortable with her so I told her my story about Smudggie. She said, "I will give you a bottle of morphine...my husband is in hospice care with me and has plenty." I went home with some morphine for Smudggie. Our days together became very special...loving and being loved ( that was us). Once in awhile Smudggie would even toss a squeaky toy in the air...and she was still smiling.
