| Cigarettes testes sur les animaux
Title: Draize-Test
This test has been especially designed for the testing of medical, cosmetical and chemical substances, but also for the testing of the end products, like creams, lipsticks, mascaras, face-lotion, soap, shampoos, powder, hairspray, toothpaste, lacquer, detergent and everything, which could perhaps touch one’s skin someday somehow. The number of rabbits and other animals, which are killed by this procedure day by day, must be some millions. The rabbits, which are immobilised, sit in long lines of cages for 72 hours. Their eyes are kept open by metal- or plastic clamps, so that they’re not able to twinkle. In short intervals chemicals, poisons, toxics and acids are dripped into their eyes. The animals cannot lick or scratch themselves, and they do not have the possibillity of diluting these aching substances either, because they have no tear gland. (That’s one important reason for the use of rabbits for these kinds ot tests.) The effects of these tests are evaluated by machines. Depending on the tested substance the rabbits’ eyes get red, their cornea (this is the outer skin of the eyeball) is injured, the tissues are destructed or they build abscesses. The eyes are destroyed systematically in layers. If the eyes are only red, the animals will be used again time after time till they die. Neither an anaesthetic nor a painkiller is given to the animals.
In other tests the animals are sheared and the skin is cut open. Then the substances are placed on these cuts till you can see open wounds or swellings.
Cigarette tests
Cigarettes are also “tested“ by animals. Some years ago 86 dogs (race: beagle) were forced to smoke 455 cigarettes every day. This procedure took about one and a half year. After this time 12 of them got pulmonary cancer. Although this test doesn’t say anything about the physical reaction of human smokers, it’s still done with other animals.
Medicament tests (for people who have kidney trouble)
A special kind of tube is inserted into the sheeps’ neck-vein. Through this tube the sheep are connected with the dialysis machine. Different doses of test-medicaments are mixed into the blood. Then some blood-tests are performed. Athough a lot of sheep have repellent reactions like falling blood-pressure, difficulty of breathing, unrest, staggers and, of course, a lot of pain, the experiments are repeated seven times with changed conditions. The sheep which didn’t die during the tests are killed after the last one, because now they are useless for further research.
The effect of a closed artery
In this experiment the necks of the mice are cut open in the middle, so that the blood-vessels of the neck lie open and now some are contracted with loops. A clamp is fixed temporarily at the inner artery of the neck so that the blood stream is stopped. After a cut into the other artery a tube is pushed forward to the brain, towards shut the middle cerebral artery. Some mice are infused a colouring substance into their hearts. A couple of minutes later they are decapitated. The brains are cut out and then examined. In the case of some other mice the artery occlusion takes three hours. There some other special products are examined and a radio-active substance is infused into the belly. The experiments are finished by the freezing of the mice. Then the brains are cut out and are examined.

| Life in a Laboratory
Imagine living locked inside a closet without control over any aspect of your life. You can't choose when and what you eat, how you will spend your time, whether or not you will have a partner and children, and if you do, who that partner will be. You can't even decide when the lights go on and off. Think about spending your entire life like this, even though you have committed no crime.
This is life in a laboratory for animals. It is deprivation, isolation, and misery.
Now consider all the specialized needs of the species imprisoned for experimentation. Chimpanzees, in their natural homes, are never separated from their families and troops. They spend hours together every day, grooming each other and making soft nests for sleeping each night. They are loving and protective parents, and baby chimps will live close to their mothers for many years. But in a laboratory, chimpanzees are caged alone. There are no families, no companions, no grooming, no nests. There are only cold, hard steel bars and loneliness that goes on for so many years that most chimpanzees sink into depression, eventually losing their minds.
Rats and mice are denied a place to dig and hide. Dogs and cats are deprived of exercise, affection, and the homes that they long for with families to care for them. Rabbits have no room to leap. Pigs cannot root in the ground or build their nests. Even when the cages are clean–and this is not always the case–the animals are not allowed to engage in any normal behavior.
On top of the deprivation, there are the experiments. Animals are infected with diseases that they would never normally contract–tiny mice grow tumors as large as their own bodies, kittens are purposely blinded, rats are made to suffer seizures. Experimenters force-feed chemicals to animals, conduct repeated surgeries on them, implant wires in their brains, crush their spines, and much more. Think of what it would be like to endure this and then be dumped back into a cage, usually without any painkillers. Video footage from inside laboratories shows that animals cower in fear every time someone walks by their cages. They don't know if they will be dragged from their prison cells for an injection, blood withdrawal, a painful procedure or surgery, or death. Often animals see other animals killed right in front of them.
While some facilities are better than others at caring for animals–not every lab employee kills mice by cutting off their heads with scissors, a practice that PETA documented at the University of North Carolina–there are no happy animals inside laboratories. Read about the hidden lives of some of the animals used in cruel experiments rats and mice and baboons. To learn more about the laboratories that PETA has exposed, click here. | |

| PETA's History: Compassion in Action
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is an international nonprofit charitable organization based in Norfolk, Virginia, with affiliates in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, India, and the Asia-Pacific Region. Founded in 1980, PETA is dedicated to establishing and defending the rights of all animals. PETA operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment. PETA educates policymakers and the public about animal abuse and promotes kind treatment of animals.
PETA’s animal protection work brings together members of the scientific, judicial, and legislative communities to stop abusive practices. Aided by thorough investigative work, congressional involvement, consumer boycotts, and international media coverage, PETA achieves long-term changes that improve the quality of life for, and prevent the deaths of, countless animals.
Historic Cases PETA has been responsible for such breakthroughs as closing the largest horse-slaughter operation in the United States, shutting down a military laboratory where animals were shot, and stopping the use of cats and dogs in all “wound” laboratories. The Philadelphia Daily News reported, “PETA has done more to lessen animal suffering than nearly any other organization.”(1)
The following are some of PETA’s major accomplishments: •PETA first uncovered the abuse of animals in experiments in 1981 and launched the precedent-setting “Silver Spring monkeys” case. This resulted in the first arrest and criminal conviction of an animal experimenter in the United States on charges of cruelty to animals, the first confiscation of abused laboratory animals, and the first U.S. Supreme Court victory for animals in laboratories. •PETA released 70 hours of graphic video footage that documented the appalling treatment of primates at the University of Pennsylvania head-injury laboratory, resulting in government fines and the loss of funding for the cruel study. •PETA’s undercover investigation of a huge contract testing laboratory in Philadelphia and our subsequent campaign led to Benetton’s permanent ban on animal tests—a first for a major cosmetics company. Other leading companies, such as Avon, Revlon, and Estée Lauder, followed suit. Gillette announced a moratorium on animal tests after PETA’s 10-year campaign. PETA now lists hundreds of companies that do not test products on animals. Please visit CaringConsumer.com for details. •After negotiations with PETA, juice-makers POM, Welch’s, and Ocean Spray agreed to stop funding animal experiments. •PETA was victorious over the General Motors Corporation, which ended its use of animals in crash tests. •PETA released investigators’ photographs and videotaped footage taken inside Carolina Biological Supply Company, the nation’s largest biological supply house. PETA documented that animals were removed from gas chambers and injected with formaldehyde without being checked for vital signs, as well as cats’ and rats’ struggling during embalming and employees’ spitting on animals. The company was charged by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) with violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA). •With the help of celebrities like Ewan McGregor and Martin Sheen; U.S., German, and Canadian government officials; and activists worldwide, PETA was able to secure the release of polar bears who had been suffering for years in the Suarez Bros. Circus. The bears are now recovering and thriving in more appropriate climates. •PETA distributed an undercover videotape that showed Las Vegas casino “entertainer” Bobby Berosini beating orangutans with a metal rod. The U.S. Department of the Interior revoked Berosini’s captive-bred-wildlife permit, making it illegal for Berosini to buy or sell orangutans.

| An undercover investigation of painful scabies experiments on dogs and rabbits at Ohio’s Wright State University led to charges by the USDA of 18 violations of the AWA. The experiments were stopped. •After being pressured by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and PETA, the American College of Surgeons replaced animals with simulations at its training conferences and is now urging medical schools to adopt non-animal training alternatives. •PETA released undercover photographs and videotapes that showed ducks’ being violently force-fed on a foie gras farm in New York, resulting in the first-ever police raid on a U.S. factory farm. After learning the gory details of foie gras production, many airlines and restaurants dropped the so-called “delicacy” from their menus. •Undercover investigations at pig-breeding factory farms in North Carolina and Oklahoma revealed horrific conditions and daily abuse of pigs, including the fact that one pig was skinned alive, leading to the first-ever felony indictments of farm workers. •In another precedent-setting case, a California furrier was charged with cruelty to animals after a PETA investigator filmed him electrocuting chinchillas by clipping wires to the animals’ genitals. The American Veterinary Medical Association denounced the killing method, saying that it causes animals to experience the pain of a heart attack while they are still conscious. In another undercover exposé, PETA videotaped a fur rancher’s causing minks to die in agony by injecting them with weed-killer. Both farms agreed to stop these cruel killing methods. •After exposing the National Air and Space Administration’s Bion experiment, in which straitjacketed monkeys were to be implanted with electrodes and then launched into space, PETA succeeded in pressuring the U.S. to pull out of the project. •PETA’s undercover investigation of a Florida exotic-animal “training school” revealed that big cats were being beaten with ax handles, which encouraged the USDA to develop new regulations governing animal training methods. •PETA’s undercover investigation of Boys Town National Research Hospital’s experiments, in which researchers cut into kittens’ heads and starved cats in order to study deafness, spurred the National Institutes of Health to issue a report condemning Boys Town’s animal care and use program. The USDA found that Boys Town had failed to comply with the AWA. •PETA convinced Mobil, Texaco, Pennzoil, Shell, and other oil companies to cover their exhaust stacks after showing how millions of birds and bats had become trapped in the shafts and were burned to death. •After two years of negotiations and more than 400 demonstrations worldwide, McDonald’s became the first fast-food chain to agree to make basic welfare improvements for farmed animals. Burger King and Wendy’s followed suit within a year’s time, and within two years, Safeway, Kroger, and Albertson’s had also agreed to adopt stricter guidelines in order to improve the lives of billions of animals slaughtered for food. •Thanks to PETA’s long campaign to push PETCO to take more responsibility for the animals in its care, the company agreed to stop selling large birds in all its stores and to make provisions for the millions of rats and mice in its care. | |

| Other Projects Since its inception in 2001, PETA’s mobile clinic, SNIP (Spay and Neuter Immediately, Please), has sterilized tens of thousands of dogs and cats at a reduced cost in the Hampton Roads, Virginia, area, preventing the births of tens of thousands of unwanted animals. PETA has also participated in the production of three animal rights albums (Liberation: Songs to Benefit PETA, Tame Yourself, and Animal Liberation) featuring artists such as Chrissie Hynde, Howard Jones, Indigo Girls, Michael Stipe, Belinda Carlisle, and Good Charlotte. PETA has also held several “Rock Against Fur” and “Fur Is a Drag” benefit concerts featuring The B-52s, k.d. lang, and other prominent performers. Long-time supporter Sir Paul McCartney invited PETA to set up literature tables on his world tour. Through its Fur Is Dead campaign, PETA has exposed the cruelty of the fur industry and convinced retailers like J.Crew, Wet Seal, Forever 21, and Ann Taylor to stop selling fur in their stores—and top designers such as Ralph Lauren, Marc Bouwer, and Stella McCartney have banned the use of fur in their designs. American Idol judge Simon Cowell and Oscar-winner Charlize Theron both appeared with dogs in our “If you wouldn’t wear your dog, please don’t wear any fur” ads, and Pamela Anderson, Christy Turlington, and Kim Basinger have all posed au naturel for PETA’s “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” ads. Martha Stewart stopped wearing fur after seeing PETA’s anti-fur videos and even hosted one of her own, exposing the horrors of the industry. Nine Inch Nails lead singer Trent Reznor narrated a video for PETA about the gruesome dog and cat fur trade in China. PETA convinced 40 companies, including Adidas-Salamon, Gap Inc., Eddie Bauer, Nike, and Reebok, to refuse to use Indian leather in their products after our investigation of the Indian leather industry revealed horrific abuses that take place during the illegal transport of cows to slaughter. “We found the treatment of animals, as documented by PETA, to be totally unacceptable and not in keeping with the image or standards of our company,” said the CEO of Florsheim.(2) “Meet Your Meat,” a video produced by PETA and narrated by Alec Baldwin, is a powerful look at each stage of life of animals raised for food. It was distributed to every member of Congress along with a letter from Baldwin that encouraged them to “protect animals from the array of abuses that are standard in the farmed-animal industry.”(3) Additionally, PETA staff members speak to students, from those in elementary school to those at the university level. In just one year, PETA distributed information packs to every elementary school in the U.S., reaching millions of young people. PETA and actor Alicia Silverstone launched a national “Cut Out Dissection” campaign, educating students about their right not to dissect. The peta2 Street Team’s young activists spread the “do unto others” message in their communities, and our peta2.com Web site—the primary communication tool of PETA’s Youth Division—receives more than 375,000 visits per month. | |

| Get ActiveTurn your love for animals into action against vivisection. PETA has a very active anti-vivisection campaign and works tirelessly to stop animal testing. Thanks to the support of caring individuals like you, we are making real headway in our fight against vivisection. You can help:
- Purchase only cruelty-free products and donate only to health charities that never fund animal experiments.
- Boycott Iams and other pet food companies that conduct cruel nutritional tests on dogs and cats and support forward-thinking companies that conduct humane home testing or laboratory analysis of foods. Learn what you can do to help animals in Iams laboratories.
- Contact medical schools that use animals for "education" and ask them to eliminate live-animal labs from their curricula.
- Help stop the animal abuse at Columbia University, where baboons are subjected to invasive surgeries and left to suffer and die in cages without any painkillers.
- Find out what you can do to stop the cruel spinal experiments performed on cats and rats at Palmer Chiropractic University. If you are an employee of Palmer Chiropractic University and have witnessed extreme cruelty to animals there, please report what you saw.
- Become a behind-the-scenes hero for animals! PETA is always looking for undercover investigators.
- If you have witnessed cruelty in any other laboratory, please report what you saw.
- Refuse to contribute to charities such as Environmental Defense, the World Wildlife Fund, and the Natural Resources Defense Council, which, surprisingly, push for increased animal testing by the Environmental Protection Agency and other agencies. Read our complete list of "mean greenies."
- Write your representatives in Congress to demand that humane alternatives to animal experiments be used. Refer to PETA's helpful guide to writing effective letters.
- Read PETA's factsheet on alternatives to animal testing and learn how you can help animals who are used for experimentation.
- Visit AnimalActivist.com for even more ways to get active for animals.

| UNC didn't learn its lesson
Second undercover investigation into lab shows extreme cruelty, callousness.
Breaking undercover investigation
A PETA undercover investigator went back inside the University of North Carolina (UNC), Chapel Hill, laboratories one year after we documented callous disregard and outright abuse of animals there. Had UNC cleaned up its act, given that hundreds of millions of dollars in research funds were at stake? No. In contrast to what UNC had assured the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the government agency that investigated our charges, we still found the animals severely overcrowded, left without veterinary care, and killed inhumanely. Pressure from the government, which opened its own investigation after PETA filed its first complaint, and news reports showing our footage of animals living and dying in misery made a difference but apparently only on paper. Our second investigator, hired to work in the same building and on some of the same experiments from January through November 2003, found that UNC has lied outright to NIH about cleaning up its act. The investigator found the following:
• Amputation of animals’ toes—in direct defiance of government orders • Mice with oversized tumors that had ulcerated and burst • Live animals who would have been thrown away along with the rest of the cage contents when the cages were cleaned if not for the intervention of our investigator • Seriously sick and injured animals left to die without any veterinary care • Severe overcrowding, leading to cannibalism and suffocation • A guillotine blade so dull that two fully conscious rats’ necks were hacked twice in order to sever their heads from their bodies • Contradictory instructions given to animal-husbandry staff

| One experimenter was permitted to kill mice from whom she was taking tissue by breaking their necks, an exception to the usual gas euthanasia. However, our investigator observed her with a bag full of dead mice who seemed to have been killed in this way—mice who had not had any tissue removed and who were probably excess mice being killed to reduce this experimenter’s chronic overcrowding. Hoping to stop it, our investigator reported the violation to members of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, which is supposed to oversee experiments, and asked them to come to the lab immediately to see the dead mice for themselves. But even though the committee members knew that they were supposed to keep a close eye on this experimenter because of repeat violations, they acted scared of her and didn’t ask to look in the bag.
UNC has shown that it won’t comply with the extremely minimal standards for basic care set by the government for using mice and rats in experiments and won’t police itself or properly discipline experimenters who thumb their noses at orders from NIH. PETA has—once again— filed a formal, detailed complaint with NIH. We are insisting that the government agency act immediately to investigate and close down UNC’s animal laboratories.
Government report proves PETA right
PETA filed its first UNC complaint in 2002 with the National Institutes of Health’s Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) and detailed each violation of the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. It took OLAW two years to issue its report on our complaint, but the government agreed with PETA that employees were improperly trained and caused animals pain and distress while taking blood, pumping their stomachs full of substances such as ethanol, and attempting to gas them or break their necks. The government also agreed with PETA that UNC committed many other violations:

| • Failure of veterinary staff to observe animals daily • Failure to provide veterinary treatment in a timely manner • Failure to kill sick and injured animals in a timely manner • Overcrowding of cages • Failure to clean cages on a regular schedule • Amputation of toes for identification purposes • Allowing mice’s teeth to become so overgrown that the animals could not eat and starved to death • Tumors on animals that were allowed to grow to unacceptably large proportions, become ulcerated, and interfere with movement • Failure to keep proper animal care records • Confusing and contradictory instructions to staff • Failure to conduct surgeries in the presence of a training and compliance officer • Unplanned and unauthorized animal experiments by students • Unauthorized injections of nicotine into animals Click here to read NIH OLAW’s summary of its 30-page report about our first UNC investigation. Predictably, UNC told NIH that most of its problems with providing proper animal care during PETA’s first investigation were caused by the supervisor in that laboratory. UNC made a big display of hiring a new supervisor who, it claimed, would not allow the same things to happen that had happened during our first investigation. When our investigator reported the toe amputations to this supervisor, he said, “Stick to the script. … I just can’t be hearin’ this. You know that, right?” It’s obvious that UNC has no respect for OLAW’s authority. The fact that UNC thinks that it can get away with treating animals so cruelly shows an arrogance that permeates many universities that are given exorbitant amounts of our tax money and trusted to “do what’s right.” We need to go above NIH now and implore the inspector general of the Department of Health & Human Services to intervene. There must be a thorough housecleaning at UNC that extends from the highest-paid positions to the lowest. Please immediately write polite letters to: Page 3 | |

| The hidden lives of rats and mice
Highly intelligent rodents, rats and mice are natural students who excel at learning and understanding concepts. Rats are considerably smaller than dogs but are at least as capable of thinking about things and figuring them out! And, while rats are much smaller than elephants, they have excellent memories. Although their eyesight is poor, once rats learn a navigation route, they never forget it.
Both mice and rats are also highly sociable animals. They become attached to each other, love their own families, and easily bond with their human guardians, returning as much affection as is given to them. Many rats will even “groom” their human companion’s hand and would appreciate a massage, a scratch behind the ears, or even a tickle in return. Recent studies by Jaak Panksepp, a neuroscientist at Bowling Green State University, suggest that when rats play or are playfully tickled, they make chirping sounds that are strikingly similar to human laughter. The rats he studied also bonded socially with the human tickler and even sought to be tickled more. Panksepp corroborates what rat lovers have known all along: “[Y]oung rats have a marvelous sense of fun.”
Male rats will snuggle up for a cuddle and find contentment curled up in a person’s lap. Although female rats are just as affectionate, they tend to be tremendously energetic and inquisitive. Rats love seeing kind people and will often bounce around waiting to be noticed and picked up. Rats can bond with their human companions to the point that if they are suddenly given away to someone else or forgotten, they can pine to death.

| Rats and mice have rights
It is estimated that each year, tens of millions of rats and mice are killed in experiments in the U.S. alone. With the popularity of genetic engineering, the numbers are increasing. These small, sensitive creatures are not even protected under the Animal Welfare Act, which exempts birds, rodents, and cold-blooded animals entirely from consideration. Mice and rats are truly complex, unique, social individuals with the capacity to experience a wide range of emotions. They deserve our respect, compassion, and protection. | • Mice and rats are fastidiously clean animals, grooming themselves several times a day. In fact, rats and mice are less likely than dogs or cats to catch and transmit parasites and viruses. • Mice and rats are highly social animals—they communicate with each other at high-frequency sounds that you can’t hear without instrumentation, play together, wrestle, and love sleeping curled up together. Much like us, if they do not have companionship, they can become lonely, anxious, depressed, and stressed. • Mice and rats have a complex language system—they can communicate by touch, by smell, and by sound at frequencies that we can’t hear. • Mice and rats are so smart that they can recognize their names and respond when called. • Mice are choosy—they like variety, too, and enjoy picking around in their food, eating the tastiest parts first, and separating out what they dislike. • Female mice with litters will vigorously defend their nests and young. • If not forced to live in a dirty cage, a rat’s skin has a very pleasant perfume-like scent. • After engaging in sex, male rats sing at frequencies beyond the hearing of humans, around 20 to 22 KHz.

| The hidden life of baboons
Like most animals who live far away from humans, baboons are known only by the stereotypes that have been created by movies and media. But those who study these animals by going to their homelands and watching them in their natural habitats—rather than observing them in unnatural laboratory settings—understand that baboons are highly intelligent, curious, and social animals. They live in complex groups of 10 to 200 and depend on each other for companionship, affection, and survival.
In many ways, they are very similar to people. Like human parents, adult baboons tend to newborns around the clock. Babies stay close to their mothers, clinging to them as they forage for food and snuggling into their laps for a nap in the afternoon sun. Drawn to the nourishment and close contact provided by their mothers’ milk, young baboons even have tantrums when their mothers attempt to wean them. Young baboons love to play, and they show a joy in living. They spend carefree days swinging from vines, playing games of chase, and wrestling and tumbling with their friends. Female baboons remain in the group into which they were born, among their relatives, throughout their entire lives. Their social lives are centered on the network of family in which they live.
Primatologists from Princeton University note, “Maternal sisters are particularly close, and this is not surprising, given their relatedness and the fact that they will spend their entire lives together. More surprisingly, females treat their paternal sisters (females with whom they share a father but not a mother) the same way that they do maternal sisters—grooming them, resting near them, and generally interacting with them more than they do non-relatives.”As baboons mature, they become active members of the troop and commonly walk four to 10 miles a day to forage for food. One of their favorite foods is the sweet gum hidden in the bark of young fever trees, and they will spend hours in a grove, satisfying their sweet tooth. Because they enjoy a wide variety of foods, baboons have adapted to many habitats, including savannas, rain forests, deserts, mountains, and seashores. In each habitat, they protect themselves from predators by climbing into the branches of tall trees or scaling steep cliffs.

| Baboons spread out in small groups during the day and gather at night in sleeping clusters that may include hundreds of animals. In the morning, alpha-male baboons swap information about which direction might offer the greatest bounty of food, and the group decides which way to go next. Primatologists have documented more than 30 distinct vocalizations—ranging from grunts to barks to screams—that baboons use to communicate with other.
Save the baboons incarcerated and tortured at Columbia University
Baboons who are being used as “research tools” in Columbia’s labs are denied all that is natural to them. Crammed into barren metal cages, these naturally social beings suffer unbearable loneliness. Mother baboons, who fuss over and care attentively for their young in the wild, have their babies taken from them. Trapped in their tiny prisons, they are deprived of the ability to roam over long stretches of land.
They are tortured in part to secure hefty federal money (our tax dollars at work) for grant-hungry vivisectors. Experimenters at Columbia are causing strokes in baboons by removing their left eyeballs and using the empty eye sockets to clamp critical blood vessels to their brains. They are surgically implanting heavy pipes into the skulls of rhesus macaques to induce stress and study the connection between stress and menstrual cycles; and they are pumping nicotine and morphine into pregnant baboons and their fetuses. Please be a voice for the animals in Columbia’s labs. Click here to find out how you can help.

| Ancient Egyptians considered baboons to be sacred and depicted them as attendants of Thoth, the God of Writing. Baboons were allowed to roam in temples. They were also mummified, and their images were carved into temples.
Baboons protest road killings
According to a report from BBC Uganda, a group of baboons in eastern Uganda staged a public “sit-in” after a speeding truck killed a female from their troupe. The grieving baboons surrounded her body in the middle of the road and refused to move for 30 minutes, blocking the highway completely. Even when passersby tried to tempt them away with food, the baboons refused to leave their deceased family member. Last year, another group of baboons threw sticks and stones at passing cars after a baby baboon from their troupe was killed on the same road.

| E. Sander Connolly
Columbia's death squad
The vivisectors
Assistant Professor Dept. of Neurological Surgery 212-305-0376 212-305-2026 (fax) esc5@columbia.edu
E. Sander Connolly is an assistant professor of neurosurgery at Columbia who has been conducting stroke experiments on baboons for years. It was the extreme suffering of the baboons after his surgeries that caused our veterinary whistleblower to contact the IACUC. PETA filed a complaint with the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) based on the veterinarian's experience with Connolly's baboon victims. We are still awaiting a response from the NIH, the funding agency for Connolly's experiments.
Connolly causes strokes in the primates by removing their left eyeballs and using the empty eye sockets in their skulls to reach a critical blood vessel to their brains. A clamp is placed on a major blood supplier for varying amounts of time until the animal suffers a "stroke." Then Connolly attempts to treat the stroke with an experimental drug. One such drug, dehydroascorbic acid (DHA) was supplied by Progenics Pharmaceuticals, Inc., of Tarrytown, New York. A May 2001 news release issued by Progenics quoted Connolly: "The positive outcome of this study underscores the potential of DHA to protect patients against the debilitating consequences of stroke." The baboons would beg to differ.
This is Handsome, a baboon so named by a technician who loved him. Handsome was to be used in Connolly's stroke experiments but was reportedly rejected because of his size and a problem with chronic regurgitation. He was used instead in a cancer experiment - resulting in severe wounds to his head and back. Notice the Nazi-style tattoo on his leg. PETA's letter to NIH's OLAW recounts the post-surgical outcomes for seven of Connolly's victims, and they are anything but positive. For example: "On September 19, 2001, baboon B777's left eye was removed, and a stroke was induced. The next morning, it was noted that the animal could not sit up, that he was leaning over, and that he could not eat. That evening, the baboon was still slouched over and was offered food but couldn't chew. On September 21, 2001, the record shows that the baboon was 'awake, but no movement, can't eat (chew), vomited in the a.m.' With no further notation about consulting with a veterinarian, the record reads, 'At 1:30 p.m. the animal died in the cage.'"

| Experts in neurology and veterinary anesthesiology reviewed the experimental protocol and were astounded by the waste and cruelty. Robert Hoffman, M.D., a Stanford-educated neurologist, pointed out that "the degree of suffering . experienced by these baboons is greater than average" for animals in Connolly's experiments and that the experience for the baboons is "obviously . terrifying." He also condemned the experiments as "useless" and wasteful of limited research resources, citing 20 years of failed studies on animals in the area of after-stroke drug therapy. Click here to read Dr. Hoffman's critique.) Carol Van Petten, M.D., is a neurologist with years of practice who also teaches at the University of Southern California Medical School. Dr. Van Petten commented on the inability of Connolly and his team to empathize with the suffering of the baboons and the general nature of the experiment: "There is very little probability that this study or others like it will produce results that will help in the prevention or treatment of stroke in humans. Moreover, the inadequacy of animal supervision and care, and sloppy record-keeping exhibited by the experimental team under Dr. Connolly's supervision is an alarming example of failure to maintain minimal humane standards which I fear plagues much animal research." (www.columbiacruelty.com/letters/vanPetten.pdf]Click here to read Dr. Van Petten's critique.) Most alarming are the comments of Nicholas Dodman, D.V.M., of Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine in which he states that the anesthetics provided to the baboons during the removal of their eyes and the clamping of their blood vessels were inadequate! (Click here to read Dr. Dodman's critique.) Eye removal is so painful that human eye surgeons give morphine to their patients for up to three days after surgery.

| On February 3, 2003, PETA sent letters to some famous Columbia graduates, informing them of the baboon stroke experiments and the complaint that we had filed with the government. One of those letters was sent to David Stern, the commissioner of the NBA, who is also the chair of Columbia University's Board of Trustees. On April 8, 2003, we received a letter from Harvey Colten, M.D., vice president and senior associate dean for translational research at Columbia to whom Mr. Stern had sent a copy of our alumni letter. Colten wrote, "We can also advise you that a call by your organization to halt this study until there is an investigation into the treatment of animals used in the research is unnecessary. No experiments under this protocol have been performed since Columbia began its own investigation; at the request of the University, the principal investigator of the study agreed not to perform additional experiments under this protocol until the investigation is complete." But what would have happened had the whistleblowing veterinarian not been in the picture? Given the fact that others at Columbia had seen the horrifying results of these experiments for several years prior, we can take a good guess and say that nothing would have happened to stop Connelly from inflicting cruelty for as long as he received money to do so. The Vivisectors
Michel Ferin, M.D
This female monkey, #88N182, has blood running down her face from her "cap" implant, which was performed in March 2003. She arrived at Columbia in 1994 and has been caged since then in conditions bereft of any environmental enrichment.
Professor Dept. of Physiology & Cellular Biophysics 212-305-3711 212-305-3869 (fax) mf8@columbia.edu
Michel Ferin is a professor of physiology and obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University's College of Physicians & Surgeons. His experiments are aimed at everything from figuring out how stress affects the menstrual cycle and reproduction to conditions specific to premenopausal women. Unfortunately, all his experiments are conducted on female rhesus macaques instead of on women. In the first in a series of eight experiments in protocol #2951, Ferin explains, "[T]he animal will be fitted with a cap anchored on the headbone. The cap is connected to a tether, which itself is attached to a swivel on top of the cage. The set-up allows full movement of the animal within its cage. The animal is then moved, for a period of 12 days, to a room different from housing. At the end of the challenge period, the monkey is returned to its previous housing location and the cap and tether are removed. To induce an inflammatory stress, we will, as previously, administer endotoxin . on a daily basis. This simulates a flu-like syndrome in the first 2 days, with some loss of appetite in the first day."
Very few women have large weights surgically attached to their skulls, but they do suffer from various other types of stress that could be studied if scientists wanted to get an idea of how human stress affects human reproductivity.

The Vivisectors
Raymond I. Stark, M.D.
Professor Dept. of Pediatrics 212-305-0954 212-305-0956 (fax) ris2@columbia.edu
Raymond Stark is a professor in the Department of Pediatrics in Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. He likes to conduct experiments on pregnant baboons and their fetuses, infusing nicotine and morphine into the mothers to measure the transfer of these substances through the umbilical cord. Dr. Stark writes about his federally funded protocol #395: "Beginning in June, 2000 we began to examine the effects of nicotine and hypoxia on the developing fetal brain. Animals are being randomized to receive either saline or nicotine infusion from about the midpoint in gestation. The nicotine concentration is monitored to keep the level similar to that seen in a moderate to heavy smoker. During the latter part of gestation, the fetus is instrumented so we can examine the developmental changes in the autonomic nervous system and the effects that nicotine has on this." Stark has been experimenting on pregnant nonhuman primates, or, as he likes to call them, "unique chronically instrumented baboon model[s]," for at least 20 years. The pregnant baboons are surgically implanted to receive doses of nicotine. They are each burdened with a hideous backpack full of instrumentation connected to a tube tether that leads to the top of their cage, where the nicotine is held in drip bags. Their babies undergo surgery while still in the uterus.

| The federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA) states that no animal may be used in more than one "survival surgery" (surgery from which the animal wakes up) unless the IACUC approves. Apparently, Columbia University's IACUC never met a survival surgery that it didn't like because on February 13, 2002, the IACUC wrote to Stark, "On February 13, 2002 members of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee approved your request to perform an additional (fifth) survival surgery on baboon #6521." Here is her long, sad surgical history:
June 17, 1999-Mother and fetus undergo "combined maternal and fetal surgery" for an undetermined protocol.
May 23, 2000-"[C]ombined maternal and fetal surgery" for Stark's morphine experiment. Her fetus survives for 13 days after the surgery.
January 26, 2001-Her femoral artery is "cut down" to provide access to her blood system for infusion of test substances. Columbia considers this minor surgery even though Stark admits to having difficulty with the procedure.
March 6, 2001-She undergoes major surgery so that Stark can get to her fetus to conduct "fetal vascular catherization and/or electrode placement" for his nicotine experiment. Her fetus survives until the next surgery.
April 4, 2001-She has a caesarian section-her fourth survival surgery-so that tissue can be collected from her baby.
Another Stark victim, baboon #6533 was killed on January 17, 2002, after a long period of not feeling well. She had aborted her baby 15 days earlier, and on her medical record, someone wrote that she was "not [a] good experimental candidate." A physical exam given before she was killed showed her to be an "extremely thin animal" whose leg muscles had atrophied. She was also dehydrated. Records on her death day read, "She was sacrificed: after X-ray and blood sampling in the morning. She has not putting (sic) weight on her left leg. Autopsy: there was a lump on the lower lumber (sic) column. At that part of spinal cord yellowish color appeared defusing around the area." As early as December 20, 2001, blood tests revealed that baboon #6533 had a bacterial infection, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, that often afflicts animals with catheter implants, but she was not given a full regimen of antibiotics. Blood cultures taken the day she was killed revealed she was still infected with the bacteria. One particularly sad description of baboon #6533 reads, "More quiet than normal. Sitting upright hugging hind legs."

| How you can help
Don't Let Columbia Get Away With Murder
First, write to:
The Honorable Ed Whitfield Chair of the Energy & Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight & Investigations 2125 Rayburn House Office Bldg. Washington, DC 20515-3808 202-225-2927 202-225-1919 (fax) commerce@mail.house.gov In March 2003, the Subcommittee on Oversight & Investigations wrote to NIH Director Elias A. Zerhouni about a probe into NIH spending that it intended to undertake: “Given these significant budget increases over the last five years, the NIH-admitted need for confidence building, and the public interest in wise management of government resources, the Committee is conducting an examination of NIH management and oversight of its federally funded research.” For more information on this probe, please see http://energycommerce.house.gov/108/Letters/03132003_834.htm
Tell the Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee members that you appreciate their efforts to make the NIH accountable for the way in which our tax dollars are spent and that you would like the Subcommittee to look into the millions of dollars given to Columbia for cruel experiments that do not hold any promise for improvements to human health. Tell them that Columbia should not be rewarded for sloppy science and poor animal care when the standards for animal care set by the government are so minimal that they could be followed by a 2-year-old. Be sure to mention the fact that Columbia does not, with all the money it gets, give these imprisoned primates any socialization or enrichment at all, which they are required to do by law. www.columbiacruelty.com/letters/greenwood.pdf Click here to see PETA's letter to the chair of the Subcommittee.

| Copy your letter to Secretary Mike Leavitt, the person who oversees the NIH. Ask him to order NIH Director Elias Zerhouni to close Columbia’s animal laboratories until a thorough investigation and housecleaning can be completed (click here to see PETA's letter to Elias Zerhouni):
The Honorable Mike Leavitt Secretary of Health and Human Services The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 200 Independence Ave. S.W. Washington, DC 20201 202-619-0257 202-690-7203 (fax)
And don't leave out the person who is most concerned with raising funds for Columbia:
David Stern Commissioner of the NBA Chair of the Board of Trustees, Columbia University Olympic Tower New York, NY 10022 212-407-8000 212-826-6197 (fax) dstern@nba.com
And finally, contact your own senators and representative by http://econstituent.votenet.com/(f5knvmn1xz0e5g55yh5hj255)/index.aspx/peta/letterwriting.aspx?issueid=701 clicking here. Sending an e-mail message is helpful, sending an automatic fax is better, printing and mailing the automatic letter is even better, and using the information to write your own letter is the most effective of all.
Brace yourself for the video showing animals from each Columbia University vivisector—Connolly, Ferin, and Stark—along with the other primates at Columbia who have nothing to do but sway, pace, and spin in their cages while they await their own murder. Many thanks to each one of you for helping these animals.
