The big fat truth about real fur

It isn't often that my wardrobe is à la mode, but now I find that I am ahead of it. Suddenly, animal prints and waist-high trousers are modish, and so must I be. What a triumph. For years I have withstood Daughter's scorn and swamped myself and our home with leopard/tiger/zebra/cheetah patterns and fur (pretend, of course) swimming costumes, frocks, T-shirts, vest, shoes, cushions, duvets and pillows, dog beds, scarves, bag, animal-print-trimmed evening dress, glasses case and cardy dragged all the way back from Argentina by Rosemary.

Imagine how charming my sofa looks, with the brindle-and-white dogs lying on the leopard/tiger cushions, the leaves of the banana plants waving through the window behind them, and me in my waist-high trousers, just like Kate Moss, in my own personal faux jungle. Bliss.
How often has Daughter been shamed by these items and shunned me - on public beaches, in shops, at parties, on walkies? Countless times, but I have stuck to my guns, and now the rest of the world has caught up. And a new development: Daughter has started borrowing my clothes - a mixed blessing.

But sadly my joy is short-lived, because who wants to be fashionable, when fashion is so vile? This year's efforts by the grand fashionistas are either super-bonkers or nothing in particular. Where are we? In Ann Summers or at D&G? Olivia comes round waving a colour supplement, nauseated by its content - the models prancing about in surgical boots, masks and spikes, shiny, high-cut knickers, legs mainly apart, pouty lips open, deeply silly hats, and all swamped in animal prints and real fur. Groo. It does them no favours.

What is the matter with these grand fashion wallahs? How far up their own bottoms can they get? So here is my advice to them. There is something about real fur that they seem not to have considered. Never mind that it is sickening, cruel, bloody and fairly pointless now that we will all soon be living in a trans-world boilerhouse. The über-problem for you fancy dressers is this: a big, real, fabulously expensive, show-off fur coat, nine times out of 10, makes you look fat. Yes, fat, fat, fat like a Michelin man. Do stop wearing them.

But I particularly don't want to end on a sour note today, because after nearly 13 years, this is to be my last column here. I feel sad and fairly terrified to be leaving, but luckily, I'm only going to another page. Phew. What a relief. I hope you think so too.

The footage shows hungry mother bears as they are lured to bait sites, only to be shot, leaving their young and dependant cubs orphaned. The video, which Ms Widdecombe showed on our behalf at the Houses of Parliament to a room full of media and governmental figures, shows graphic scenes of the baiting, shooting, and skinning of bears by hunters who laugh and joke as they work. :

Urge Zappos.com To Stop Selling Fur


Zappos, an online retailer, knows about the suffering that goes into every fur-trimmed garment or accessory, but the company continues to contribute to that suffering by using fur. With so many fashionable, comfortable alternatives available today, there is no excuse for Zappos.com to continue using the fur of tortured animals in its designs.

Animals killed for their fur spend their entire lives exposed to all weather conditions in cramped, filthy wire cages. Fur farmers use the cheapest and cruelest killing methods—including suffocation, electrocution, gassing, and poisoning—and these often ineffective methods sometimes leave animals still conscious when they are skinned.

Please join us in urging Zappos.com to follow the lead of other designers and retailers—including Nike, Kenneth Cole, Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, J. Crew, Gap, Stella McCartney, and others—who have already adopted permanent fur-free policies.

Autumn is here, and “fashionistas” everywhere are buying, selling, or writing about fall wardrobes. Don’t forget an essential day in the fall “fashion season” - Fur Free Friday! Join us again this year as we urge shoppers to never buy fur, stores to stop selling fur, and media fashion writers to reveal the truth behind fur.

Every year, over 50 million animals are brutally killed and skinned to make fur products. These animals experience a tremendous amount of suffering in traps or on fur farms.

While many companies have fulfilled their pledge to go fur-free, other popular brands such as Juicy Couture continue to profit from animal suffering.

Fur Free Friday will be the day after Thanksgiving, all over the country. You can join one of the following events or plan your own. IDA can provide you with supplies, tips, event listings, and e-alerts to other IDA members in your community. E-mail questions to Caroline@idausa.org.

Thank you for signing a recent e-mail petition about the cruel fur industry. Although we did not create the petition, we are pleased to learn of it and would like to let you know other ways you can help.

Millions of animals suffer horrific treatment and slaughter in the fur industry. Those raised on fur farms spend their lives in cramped and filthy cages. Those trapped in the wild often languish for days as a steel jaw trap tears the skin from their bones. Some even chew off their own limbs in an attempt to escape. Much fur comes from China, where animals are skinned alive.

PETA continues to add nails to the fur industry’s coffin with headline-grabbing campaigns such as our recent graphic ads featuring Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron, Garbage front-woman Shirley Manson, Simon Cowell and Stella McCartney amongst others. We are confident that fur sales will fall as more people learn the truth, but we need your help!
