| boycott Procter & Gamble
Who are Procter & Gamble?
Procter & Gamble (P&G) are the world’s largest consumer products company, with an annual turnover of over $68 billion. Their international headquarters is in the US city of Cincinnati. Traditionally known for their soaps and detergents, P&G now produce a massive range of products in hair care, cosmetics, perfumes, personal hygiene, laundry care, snack food, paper and feminine hygiene, and even pet food. P&G’s brands include Ariel, Daz, Fairy, Max Factor, Olay, Pantene Pro-V, Herbal Essences, and Head and Shoulders. Click here for the full list.
Why Boycott P&G?
P&G admit that guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, ferrets, rats and mice are among the animals used in their ‘product safety research’, as well as cats and dogs in pet food experiments. Uncaged’s investigations continue to reveal disturbing examples of P&G’s ongoing involvement in painful and lethal animal tests. Procter & Gamble exist for one reason, and one reason only - to make as much money as possible. P&G test on animals because of their desire to get new chemical ingredients on to the market. This allows them to claim that their new hair dye, skin cream or washing powder etc. is ‘new, improved’, in the hope of increasing sales. But with many companies producing similar consumer products without carrying out animal tests, it shows that P&G’s cruelty is motivated by greed. Obviously, P&G realise that their behaviour appals most people. Sadly, instead of reforming, P&G invest enormous amounts in PR and spin that aims to give a rosy impression of their testing practices. P&G have even been lobbying governments to try to block bans on animal testing for cosmetics that have public support. Now, Uncaged’s investigations have uncovered P&G’s outrageous plans to carry out massive animal testing programmes for new cosmetics and household product ingredients. Money is the only language P&G understand. Ultimately, by boycotting P&G, you hold the key to saving the many thousands of animals who suffer and die every year in cruel and unnecessary tests conducted by this company.

P&G’s ANIMAL TESTING
Pain for Profit
Although Procter & Gamble (P&G) admit that guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, ferrets, rats and mice are among the animals used in their ‘product safety research’ [1], the company is highly secretive about what actually happens to the animals they sacrifice. However, Uncaged can reveal disturbing examples of P&G’s involvement in painful and lethal animal tests. Apart from pain and injury caused by the chemicals themselves, unfortunately many animals also suffered because of a lack of basic care:
Over a thousand hamsters, mice and rats forced to inhale tiny, ‘nano-sized’ particles Mice genetically-engineered to create new ways of testing ingredients in cosmetic and cleaning products Animals injured in hair care and fabric softener skin irritancy tests Repeated painful and lethal skin allergy tests on guinea pigs and mice
Earlier P&G tests [2] include:
an acute toxicity test where dogs were force fed large amounts of a cleaning chemical by stomach tube [3] cancer and toxicity tests on rats and mice of optical brighteners and other washing power ingredients long-term poisoning tests in animals for colouring agents 71 mice were repeatedly force-fed a synthetic musk fragrance by tube [4]
It’s hard to think of anything more vicious than poisoning and killing animals for the sake of tinkering with cosmetics and washing powder formulations. P&G are responsible for relentless cruelty at its most calculating.
FOOTNOTES:
‘Finding Alternatives for Product Safety testing’, P&G publication 2005: ‘85% of the animals used for human safety testing are rats or mice; the remainder are mostly guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, and ferrets’. For example, it appears that rabbits are used in the notorious Draize eye irritancy test and developmental toxicity. (The P&G report at www.pg.com./science/Brochure_print.pdf implies that use of the notorious Draize eye test continues.) Procter & Gamble steeped in cruel animal testing of its consumer products, charge activist websites Procter & Gamble (P&G), the corporate conglomerate which recently bought out organic supplement and vitamin company New Chapter (http://www.naturalnews.com), has a long and extensive history of engaging in cruel animal testing on its portfolio of products. And according to at least two animal activist sites, P&G has essentially been lying for years about making efforts to switch to cruelty-free testing alternatives. According to the website www.PandGKills.com, which is owned and operated by the group In Defense of Animals, P&G continues to torture rabbits, dogs, hamsters, guinea pigs, and other creatures by conducting experiments on them that include poisoning them with toxins, burning their eyes with chemicals, and eventually killing them. And the U.K. website Uncaged says that on top of these and many other extreme testing protocols, P&G does not even provide basic care for these animals while they are still alive. "Laboratory workers place the animals in restraining devices so they cannot struggle while the workers apply the chemicals, which burn into the animals' eyes and skin," says P&GKills.com. "P&G 'scientists' do not sedate the animals or give them painkillers. Animals sometimes break their necks or backs attempting to escape the pain. Those that survive are used in yet additional painful tests ... until they are finally killed."
According to Uncaged P&G's animal torture protocols have also included forcing hamsters to inhale large amounts of "nano-sized" particles; forcing mice to consume synthetic musk and other fragrances; and even forcing dogs to eat large amounts of a cleaning chemical by pumping it directly into their stomachs. "It's hard to think of anything more vicious than poisoning and killing animals for the sake of tinkering with cosmetics and washing power formulas," writes Uncaged. "P&G are responsible for relentless cruelty at its most calculating." There is absolutely no reason, of course, for P&G to continue abusing, torturing, and killing animals as part of its product testing protocols. And yet the company continues to do it, perhaps simply because it is convenient and represents the way in which the company has always tested its products. Even so, there are other ways to test products that do not involve torturing animals, many of which are far less expensive in the long run. And if P&G really wanted to end animal testing cruelty, it could simply switch to chemical-free, natural products instead of the petroleum derivative-laced synthetic products it currently sells. Some major P&G-owned brands include Cover Girl, Crest, Old Spice, Scope, Downy, Pampers, Duracell, Tide, and now New Chapter. You can find a list of all P&G brands by visiting: http://www.pg.com/en_US/brands/index.shtml

boycott Procter & Gamble
Part 2: What P&G say about testing on animals
P&G say that they only test on animals as a last resort and only when required by law. Doesn’t this mean that they have to test on animals? P&G say they have spent over $150 million on developing alternatives (since 1984), doesn’t that show how committed they are to stopping animal testing? With regard to Iams, P&G say that they only carry out research on animals that would be equivalent to research involving humans, so how can Iams be doing laboratory experiments on animals?
1. P&G say that they only test on animals as a last resort and only when required by law. Doesn’t this mean that they have to test on animals? Procter & Gamble spend lots of money on clever PR to give the impression they care about animals. But their claims do not stand up to close scrutiny. Firstly, there are many other companies that produce cosmetics, toiletries and household products without animal testing. Secondly, documents submitted to the US Government by P&G reveal that they have repeated animal tests for a washing powder ingredient, even though the chemical had been found safe in a massive trial on human volunteers and had been in use for several years. These tests were not even a legal requirement. Thirdly, P&G are pushing for additional animal tests for new, ultra-tiny ‘nanoparticles’ for use in cosmetics and toiletries. These toxic and lethal tests include inserting a needle into the animals’ windpipes, force-feeding huge doses of the material, and rubbing it into raw, damaged skin. In pursuit of profits, P&G endlessly searches for novel, hi-tech substances to add to its household products. “New and improved” labels are meant to persuade customers that existing products can’t do the job properly. But the novel ingredients, including nanoparticles and powerful enzymes, can also harm our health - by causing allergies and other toxic effects.
P&G try to give the impression of safety by means of painful tests on animals such as guinea pigs and genetically modified mice. Given the option, most customers prefer to use products with established, safe ingredients, rather than risk their own health and cause hundreds of animals’ deaths.

| P&G say they have spent over $150 million on developing alternatives (since 1984), doesn’t that show how committed they are to stopping animal testing?
P&G could stop their animal testing immediately if they decided to use the thousands of existing ingredients that already have a proven safety record from being used by humans. The bottom line is that they put profits ahead of animals – it’s pure greed. P&G’s own scientific papers show that some of these proposed ‘alternatives’ are just slightly less cruel types of animal test, rather than truly humane, non-animal alternatives. Even if we accept P&G’s claim at face value (and there’s no evidence to back it up), then this translates to just 0.6% of their total spending on research. Even more startling, the amount spent by P&G on developing alternatives is approximately 1/1000, or 0.1%, of the amount that it spends on advertising. So their claims are not quite so impressive when put in context.
With regard to Iams, P&G say that they only carry out research on animals that would be equivalent to research involving humans, so how can Iams be doing laboratory experiments on animals? Firstly, P&G are only referring to cats and dogs with this policy, it doesn’t apply to other animals, who they kill in Iams experiments (though again they don’t volunteer this information!) Secondly, we believe that this statement from P&G is seriously misleading anyway. P&G have admitted (though they don’t state this openly) that they keep cats and dogs for several months and years in caged laboratory environments, performing invasive and painful experiments on them. These aren’t animals who have just got sick and are getting treatments for their condition while being observed for research reasons. No responsible pet guardian would allow their animals to be used in the way P&G do. The use of animals in procedures who have been bred and caged in laboratory facilities for the purposes of experimentation has no acceptable ethical parallel in human studies.
