China's Shocking Fur Trade
Other Viewing Options When undercover investigators made their way onto Chinese fur farms, they found that many animals are still alive and struggling desperately when workers flip them onto their backs or hang them up by their legs or tails to skin them. When workers on these farms begin to cut the skin and fur off an animal's leg, the free limbs kick and writhe. Workers stamp on the necks and heads of animals who struggle too hard in order to make a clean cut.
When the fur is finally peeled off over the animals' heads, their naked, bloody bodies are thrown onto a pile of those who have gone before them. Some are still alive, breathing in ragged gasps and blinking slowly. Some of the animals' hearts are still beating five to 10 minutes after they are skinned. One investigator recorded a skinned raccoon dog on the heap of carcasses who had enough strength to lift his bloodied head and stare into the camera.
Because a fur garment's origin can't be traced, anyone who wears any fur at all shares the blame for the horrific conditions on Chinese fur farms. The only way to prevent such unimaginable cruelty is by never wearing any fur. Take PETA's pledge to be fur-free today! Pledge to Go Fur-Free I, the undersigned, hereby pledge to go fur-free. I say "No" to the cruel and barbaric slaughter of millions of animals around the world for their skin. I say "No" to fur coats, collars, trim, trinkets, cat toys and other products made from the fur of animals as well as any other attempt to sneak fur into everyday items. I pledge to expose the truth about fur and to spread the word until we close down the international fur trade forever.

Sign the Pledge to Go Fur-Free Consumers everywhere need to know the truth about fur. We believe that when people learn that millions of innocent animals are beaten, boiled, hanged and electrocuted for their fur every year; that every fur coat, piece of fur trim and fur trinket represents the intense suffering of animals; and that furriers intentionally mislabel dog and cat fur as fur from other species and mislabel real fur as fake fur, they will want to go fur-free.
By signing the pledge below – and encouraging your friends and family to do so as well – you'll be sending a powerful message not only to the fur industry but also to designers, retailers and others who directly profit from the suffering caused by this cruel industry.
Sign This Pledge I, the undersigned, hereby pledge to go fur-free. I say "no" to the cruel and barbaric slaughter of millions of animals around the world for their skin. I say "no" to fur coats, collars, trim, trinkets and cat toys as well as to any other products made from the fur of animals. I pledge to expose the truth about fur and to spread the word until the international fur trade is ended.

| Noticia del 30 de septiembre de 2008 : Take Action for Truth in Fur Labeling U.S. law allows clothing designers and retailers to omit, on their labels, any mention of animal fur on fur-trimmed jackets. They are even allowed to dye real fur to make it look fake, and sell it without mentioning on the label that it is real fur. And "Asiatic raccoon" on a garment label means that the fur is really from a raccoon dog who may have been skinned alive. Consumers deserve to know if animal fur is on a garment, and the real name of the animal. Fortunately, legislation (H.R. 891/S. 3610) has been introduced in Congress to protect consumers and improve fur labeling laws. TAKE ACTION Please make a brief, polite phone call to your U.S. Representative and two U.S. Senators to urge them to support and co-sponsor H.R. 891/S. 3610. You can reach your federal by calling the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121. After making your phone calls, please fill in and submit the form linked to this email to automatically send a follow-up email to your federal legislators urging support for legislation on fur labeling. Make your message even more effective by putting it into your own words. Recipients Senator Jon Tester Senator Max S. Baucus Representative Dennis 'Denny' R. Rehberg Message * Subject: Dear [Decision Maker], Please co-sponsor H.R. 891/S. 3610 to protect consumers and improve fur labeling laws. This legislation would close a loophole that lets some animal fur go unlabeled, and would also help protect consumers from being duped into buying fur from the raccoon dog, a member of the dog family killed in large numbers in China by brutal methods including being skinned alive. * Please personalize your message Dog fur is being sold in the United States on fur jackets that are not labeled. Dog fur is also being sold as faux fur. Raccoon dog fur is being sold nationwide on jackets that are not labeled. Raccoon dog fur is also being sold as faux fur, raccoon fur, or coyote fur. Approximately one out of seven fur products sold in the United States are not required to have a label that tells consumers that they are buying real fur, the species, or the country the animal was killed in. Consumers have a right to know what they are purchasing. Again, please support and co-sponsor H.R. 891/S. 3610 to protect consumers and improve fur labeling laws. Thank you.

http://www.strasbourgcurieux.com/fourrure http://www.petatv.com http://www.jlodown.com/indexEsp.asp http://www.schweizer-tierschutz-sts.ch
Lugar: Av. El Paseo, frente a la embajada de China (Quinta El Oriente), Prados del Este, Caracas. Hora: De 2:00 pm a 4:00 pm

| Deflocked! | Main | Audrey Kitching - Fur Is Dead! Free Stuff Friday: Anti-Fur Pins March 14, 2008 Posted by Pulin Modi | Permalink | Comments ( 158 ) | TrackBack TAGGED: fur pins furisdead I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur Free Stuff Friday
You all know about the Fur Is Dead campaign by now. But what you might not know is that we're giving out free anti-fur buttons to people who sign our 100,000 Strong Against Fur petition at shows. Check our MySpace page for a list of all the places we'll be in the next few months and stop by to say hello!
We realize not everyone reading this will be at the shows, but we still wanted to give you a chance to get a free pin to show your support for campaigns against anyone killing seals, foxes, mink, and other animals for their fur. Basically, all you have to do is comment to tell us what you'd rather do than wear fur. (If you're familiar with our "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" campaign, this will make even more sense.). It can be something you already like doing or something you absolutely hate but would still rather do than wear the skin of a dead animal.
Some examples would be: I'd rather practice solving algebra problems than wear fur. -Rachel I'd rather ride a unicycle than wear fur. -Ryan I'd rather have a bird poop on my head than wear fur. -Marta
We'll pick the 10 best comments and send each person a free anti-fur pin! That's a lot of winners. So get creative and comment away!
Word.
-Pulin
P.S.- Since it's a contest, we assume you are cool with our privacy policy and terms and conditions. You have until March 24, 2008 to enter and we'll notify winners by the end of that week.

Vestimenta

| Dec 22 Donna Karan Dumps Fur! Posted at 11:33 AM | Permalink | Comments (98)
Donna Karan, the target of one of our campaigns, has announced that her fall 2009 lines will be fur-free and that she has "no plans" to use fur in the future!
PETA is now calling on activists and supporters to put the brakes on our "Donna Karan: Bunny Butcher" antics, which have included protesting outside her boutiques, crashing her runway show, and exposing her cruel use of fur online. This is a win for the real fashion victims—animals, who are routinely skinned alive for their pelts—and will allow us all to focus on Armani and other targets while keeping an eye on Donna Karan's 2010 collection.
Karan's announcement came days after PETA launched our (now offline) DonnaKaranBunnyButcher.com Web site and after mega–fashion guru Tim Gunn sent Karan and designer Giorgio Armani a video that he narrated for PETA showing animals skinned alive for their fur and urged them to open their eyes to the violent and bloody fur industry.
While Donna Karan has followed in the footsteps of top designers—including Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Calvin Klein—Armani still refuses to stop using fur. Armani claims that he "only" uses fur from rabbits who are butchered for meat. We hope that you will take this opportunity to contact Armani to tell him that while the meat of gentle rabbits killed for their fur in China is sold to be eaten, the suffering that they endure is exactly the same. Point out that the cruelty depicted in this video on fur farms in both China and France show animals who are killed for both fur and meat.
If you're under the age of 21, please send a message to Armani through our youth campaign site, peta2.com.

Oct 21 Victory! Zappos.com Goes Fur-Free! Posted at 11:01 AM | Permalink | Comments (71)
We at PETA have long loved Zappos.com for its amazing selection of leather-free shoes. In fact, we recently ranked Zappos.com the number one best vegan shoe retailer. So needless to say, when we found out that Zappos.com was selling lots of fur products, we were none too pleased.
Back in August, we wrote to the company about this, urging it to adopt a fur-free policy. At the time, the company said that it would look into the issue to gauge people's thoughts on it. So, to help speed that process up, we launched an online marketing campaign, getting members of the public to write to Zappos.com's CEO and urge him to send the pelts packing—and more than 11,000 of you did! The campaign became totally viral and social networking played a huge part—many people posted tweets on Twitter, passed around our petition on Facebook, and much more.
I mean, seriously, is this the first campaign in history ever to be won by tweeting and the slick use of other online tools? It's pretty exciting if you ask me—and also pretty novel! We are paving the way of the future, my friends.
Well, it seems that Zappos.com got the message that people hate fur, because yesterday, the company officially adopted a permanent policy never to sell any products containing the fur of an animal!
Thank you SO much, all you fantastic online activists, for helping—and thank you, Zappos.com, for making the kind decision to forgo fur now and in the future. This will help spare countless minks, rabbits, foxes, and other animals all the horrors of fur farming and trapping, such as being electrocuted, bludgeoned, and skinned alive.
Now that we're all rightfully pumped up about this exciting victory, we've decided to take on a new campaign—because, well, we can't be stopped! Please join us in asking Amazon.com to follow Zappos.com's lead and go fur-free. For those who want to learn more about the issue and find other ways to help, please visit FurIsDead.com and be sure to check out our compassionate clothing guide here.

Urge Canada Goose to Stop Selling Fur Canada Goose, an outerwear retailer, knows about the suffering that goes into every fur-trimmed garment, but the company continues to contribute to it by using fur. With so many fashionable, warm, and durable alternatives available today, there is no excuse for Canada Goose to continue using the fur of tortured animals in its designs.
PETA has written to Canada Goose CEO Dani Reiss and explained that animals killed for their fur spend their entire lives exposed to all weather conditions in cramped, filthy wire cages. We explained that fur farmers use the cheapest and cruelest killing methods—including suffocation, electrocution, gassing, and poisoning—and that these methods aren't always effective, which means that animals are sometimes still conscious when they are skinned.
Please join us in urging Canada Goose to follow the lead of other designers and retailers—including Burton, North Face, Columbia Sportswear, Mountain Hardwear, Coldwater Creek, and others—who have already adopted permanent fur-free policies.
Please use the form below to send an e-mail to CEO Dani Reiss asking that he follow the lead of other designers and retailers who refuse to use fur. Ask him to remove fur from Canada Goose collections permanently!

Danity Kane's Naked Anti-Fur Ad With the recent announcement on Making the Band that Danity Kane members Aubrey O'Day and D. Woods are leaving the group, PETA is forging ahead with plans to release its new anti-fur ad campaign starring all five original members.
With a string of hits and two successful albums on Bad Boy Records already under their belts, Danity Kane are well on their way to becoming the next female supergroup. These gals are overflowing with talent and compassion because it turns out that they'd rather go naked than wear fur. The pop sensations shed their clothes and posed in the buff for PETA's sexy new anti-fur PSA, urging their fans and everyone else to "be comfortable in your own skin and let animals keep theirs."
Since the group formed on MTV's hugely popular "Making the Band" series, the multi-talented quintet of Aubrey O'Day, Aundrea Fimbres, D. Woods, Dawn Richard, and Shannon Bex has taken the music industry by storm and shows no signs of slowing down. From tours, videos, and guest spots on other albums to appearances on Broadway and the latest season of "Making the Band," these gals are busy—but not too busy to stand up for a cause they believe in.
Danity Kane bared all in their new ad because they want everyone to know there's nothing glamorous or beautiful about wearing fur. "Any time we would see people wear it we'd be like, 'Gosh why'd they wear that? That's so sad. That was a living animal at one point,'" Aundrea told us.
These songbirds know that behind every collar, cuff, or jacket is a horrible, painful death. Animals such as rabbits, foxes, minks, raccoons—and even dogs and cats—who are killed for their fur are beaten, strangled, electrocuted, and drowned, and many will be skinned alive so they can be made into clothing and accessories. Says Dawn, "Animals don't have the voice to speak out, and that's where it's our place to come in and stand firm with that. And being that we're artists, we have so much power. A lot is said in these photos, and I always thought that this statement was so beautiful." Check out what else Danity Kane had to say when we chatted with them during their photo shoot.
Help us spread the word about the cruelty inherent in the fashion industry by streaming Danity Kane's video on your MySpace page. And if you haven't already done so, please sign PETA's pledge to go fur free today!

Just one month after launching an online campaign against Zappos, PETA is happy to announce that the company has agreed to go fur-free!
Thanks to everyone who helped win this important victory for animals!
By making this commitment, Zappos is joining Target, QVC, the Home Shopping Network, Nike, Polo Ralph Lauren, Gap, Forever 21, Wet Seal, and dozens of other companies and designers that have gone fur-free. Unfortunately, many other big-name retailers have yet to step up to the plate for animals.
Please take just a few seconds to write to Amazon.com and ask that the company follow in Zappos' footsteps by dropping fur for good! The online megastore is currently selling a variety of fur products, including fur from rabbits and foxes. :

Thanks again for standing up for animals killed for their fur by helping to win our campaign against Zappos. Please also send an e-mail to Zappos at cs@zappos.com thanking the company for going fur-free.

| You probably know by now that Donna Karan, the designer who runs the fashion labels Donna Karan and DKNY, uses animal fur in her collections—even though she once promised to stop. To help put an end to Donna Karan's fur cruelty, we just launched a new parody Web site, DonnaKaranBunnyButcher.com, and we wanted you to be one of the first to know.
Explore the site, where you can take action, watch and share videos, grab wallpaper for your computer, and stay up-to-date on our campaign to stop the bunny butcher. :
http://blog.peta.org/archives/2008/12/donna_karan.php
We've launched this campaign to help animals on fur farms, who spend their entire lives confined to cramped, filthy wire cages. Fur farmers use the cheapest killing methods available to end the lives of animals, including neck-breaking, suffocation, poisoning, and anal or vaginal electrocution. Many animals on fur farms are electrocuted by having rods inserted into their rectums and 240 volts of electricity sent through their bodies, frying the animals from the inside out in order to keep from damaging the pelts. The animals convulse, shake, and often cry out before suffering painful heart attacks. We need you to help these animals.
Will you please help by sharing this information with everyone you know?
There are many ways that you can share this information, which will help countless fur-bearing animals. A couple of fast and easy ways are by e-mailing our parody Web site to friends or by adding one of our new "Donna Karan: Bunny Butcher" videos to your own Web page or online profile.
Thank you for your compassion for animals this holiday season.
Very truly yours,

Fur farms: (global)- another great American shame. Even in the U.S. the wild animals are raised under appalling, unregulated, unhealthy conditions, only to be anally electrocuted or have their heads bashed in for skinning, some even skinned while still alive (esp. in Asia).
These beautiful wild animals are kept in tiny, cold cages with wire mesh bottoms for drainage. They are not allowed any of their natural behavior, which may include nesting, socializing, playing, etc. They often go psychotic and spin endlessly in circles. Many get their little paws caught in the wire mesh and may break a limb off. Many cages are outdoors, and the animals are kept winter and summer, left to survive in freezing cold weather with nowhere to nest. Veterinary care is nonexistant as it would cut into profits. These fur farms are uninspected and operate entirely as the owners see fit. It’s an “anything goes” environment, rife with the most apalling abuses imaginable.
Who’s fighting it: ALF (in the U.S.), Peta, HSUS, IDA, WSPA, the McCartneys, Born Free USA, Life Force Foundation, Animal Alliance, Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade (U.K.), ALV, Fur-Bearer Defenders (Canada), animalconcerns.org, furfreenyc.org, wiserearth.org, antifurcoalition.org, all-creatures.org, ecodefense.com, antifursociety.org, furisdead.com
“Life on the “Ranch” To cut costs, fur farmers pack animals into small cages, preventing them from taking more than a few steps back and forth. This crowding and confinement is especially distressing to minks——solitary animals who may occupy up to 2,500 acres of wetland habitat in the wild. The anguish and frustration of life in a cage leads minks to self-mutilate——biting at their skin, tails, and feet——and frantically pace and circle endlessly. Zoologists at Oxford University who studied captive minks found that despite generations of being bred for fur, minks have not been domesticated and suffer greatly in captivity, especially if they are not given the opportunity to swim. Foxes, raccoons, and other animals suffer just as much and have been found to cannibalize their cagemates in response to their crowded confinement
Animals in fur factory farms are fed meat byproducts considered unfit for human consumption. Water is provided by a nipple system, which often freezes in the winter or might fail because of human error. Poison and Pain No federal humane slaughter law protects animals in fur factory farms, and killing methods are gruesome. Because fur farmers care only about preserving the quality of the fur, they use slaughter methods that keep the pelts intact but that can result in extreme suffering for the animals. Animals may have clamps attached to or rods forced into their mouths and rods are forced into their anuses, and they are painfully electrocuted. Other are poisoned with strychnine, which suffocates them by paralyzing their muscles with painful, rigid cramps. Gassing and neck-breaking are other common slaughter methods in fur factory farms.
The fur industry refuses to condemn even blatantly cruel killing methods. Genital electrocution——deemed “unacceptable” by the American Veterinary Medical Association in its “2000 Report of the AVMA Panel on Euthanasia”——causes animals to suffer from cardiac arrest while they are still conscious. In 1994, Indiana became the first state to file criminal charges against a fur factory farm after PETA investigators documented genital electrocution at V-R Chinchillas. The chinchilla fur industry considers electrocution and neck-breaking “acceptable.”
Dog and cat fur When PETA conducted an undercover investigation into the dog and cat fur trade in 2005, investigators went to an animal market in Southern China and found that dogs and cats were languishing in tiny cages, visibly exhausted. Some had been on the road for days, transported in flimsy wire-mesh cages with no food or water. Animals were packed so tightly into cages that they could not move. Because of the cross-country transport in such deplorable conditions, our investigators saw dead cats on top of the cages, dying cats and dogs inside the cages, and cats and dogs with open wounds. Some animals were lethargic, and others were fighting with each other, driven insane from confinement and exposure. All of them were terrified.
Investigators reported that up to 8,000 animals were loaded onto each truck, with cages stacked on top of each other. Cages containing live animals were tossed from the tops of the trucks onto the ground 10 feet below, shattering the legs of the animals inside them. Many of the animals still had collars on, a sign that they were once someone’’s beloved companions, stolen to be bludgeoned, hanged, bled to death, and strangled with wire nooses so that their fur can be turned into coats, trim, and trinkets.
Undercover investigators from Swiss Animal Protection/EAST International toured fur farms in China’s Hebei Province and found that foxes, minks, rabbits, and other animals were pacing and shivering in outdoor wire cages, exposed to everything from scorching sun to freezing temperatures to driving rain. Disease and injuries are widespread on these farms, and animals suffering from anxiety-induced psychosis chew on their own limbs and repeatedly throw themselves against the cage bars.
The globalization of the fur trade has made it impossible to know where fur products come from. Skins move through international auction houses and are purchased and distributed to manufacturers around the world, and finished goods are often exported. Even if a fur garment’’s label says that it was made in a European country, the animals were likely raised and slaughtered elsewhere——possibly on an unregulated Chinese fur farm.

Fur trapping: (global)– a whole separate atrocity from fur farming and skinning– animals left in traps, sometimes for days. Often stomped on by trappers if found still alive. About two-thirds of the animals caught in the indiscriminate traps are “junk” catch– animals not used for fur, including domestic dogs and cats.
Who’s fighting it: HSUS, IDA, Mercy for Animals, Animal Alliance, Peta, ALF, DownBound.com, Born Free USA, Life Force Foundation, ALV, Fur-Bearer Defenders, animalconcerns.org, furfreenyc.org, wiserearth.org, antifurcoalition.org,all-creatures.org, ecodefense.com, antifursociety.org, bancrueltraps.com
Although the majority of animals slaughtered for their fur come from notoriously cruel fur factory farms, every year, trappers kill 10 million raccoons, coyotes, wolves, bobcats, opossums, nutria, beavers, otters, and other fur-bearing animals.
Varieties of Trapping
There are various types of traps, including snares, underwater traps, and Conibear traps, but the leghold trap is the most widely used. The American Veterinary Medical Association calls these traps “inhumane.” This simple but barbaric device has been banned in 88 countries and in a growing number of states across the U.S. since 1973, including California, Florida, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Washington state. In 1994, Arizona banned the use of leghold traps on public lands. California voters prohibited all commercial leghold traps in 1998, and Washington voters followed suit, adding a ban on body-gripping traps, in November 2000. When an animal steps on the leghold trap spring, the trap’s jaws slam on the animal’s limb. The animal will frantically struggle in excruciating pain as the trap cuts into his or her flesh, often down to the bone, mutilating the foot or leg. Some animals, especially mothers desperate to get back to their young, fight so vigorously that they attempt to chew or twist off their trapped limb. This struggle may last hours. Eventually, the animal succumbs to exhaustion and often exposure, frostbite, shock, and death.
If trapped animals do not die from blood loss, infection, or gangrene, they will probably be killed by predators or hunters. Victims of water-set traps, including beavers and muskrats, can take up to 20 agonizing minutes to drown. Because many trapped animals are mutilated by predators before trappers return, pole traps are often used. A pole trap is a form of leghold trap that is set in a tree or on a pole. Animals caught in these traps are hoisted into the air and left to hang by the caught appendage until they die or the trapper arrives to kill them. Conibear traps crush animals’ necks, applying 90 pounds of pressure per square inch. It takes animals three to eight minutes to suffocate in these traps.

Traps do not always kill
For animals who stay alive in the traps, further torture awaits them when the trappers return. State regulations on how often trappers must check their traps vary from 24 hours to one week. Some states have no regulations at all. To avoid damaging the pelt, trappers usually beat or stomp their victims to death. A common stomping method is to pin the head with one foot and stand on the chest area near the heart with the other foot for several minutes, which suffocates the animal.
“Accidental” victims
Every year, dogs, cats, birds, and other animals, including endangered species, are crippled or killed by traps. Trappers call these animals “trash kills” because they have no economic value. In Middleboro, Mass., the body of a skinned dog was found with his front paw missing. Evidence led the investigating officer to believe a trapper caught the dog in a leghold trap, then shot and skinned him. In Oregon, a woman watched helplessly as her companion dog let out screams of pain after stepping into a steel-jaw leghold trap hidden in a meadow frequented by people and their companion dogs. It took three firefighters 24 grueling minutes to release the terrified dog from the trap. In Montana, a woman walking her dogs on public land struggled frantically as her canine companion screamed and writhed in agony when he suddenly became trapped by a baited Conibear trap. She unsuccessfully tried to release the clamp as her beloved companion slowly suffocated. “I’ve never seen anything as traumatic as this girl trying to raise the dog from the trap,” said a witness who heard the woman’s screams for help. Later, she discovered that another dog had been caught in a Conibear trap on the same trapline only six days earlier and that the trapper responsible for the traps had been informed at that time by a game warden.

Fur : Ecological Concerns
Contrary to fur-industry propaganda, there is no ecologically sound reason to trap animals for fur; In fact, trapping disrupts wildlife populations by killing healthy animals needed to keep their species strong, and populations are further damaged when the parents of young animals are killed. Left alone, animal populations can and do regulate their own numbers. Even if human intervention or an unusual natural occurrence caused an animal population to rise temporarily, the group would soon stabilize through natural processes no more cruel, even at their worst, than the pain and trauma of being trapped and slaughtered by humans. Killing animals because they might starve or might get sick is simply an excuse for slaughter motivated by greed and ignorance
Recent progress: Israel has introduced the world’s first nationwide bill to prohibit the fur industry in its entirety, including all importation, production and all sales in Israel. Also the 2009 EU ban on seal fur will make a huge difference on the annual Canadian seal slaughter.
