Aún cuando la campaña I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur (Mejor desnuda que usar piel) de PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) ha sido calsificada de sexista, no se puede negar su impacto en todo el mundo y la extraordinaria labor social de la organización en pro de los animales.
Clasificada como la modelo para traje de baño más sexy y una de las Top 10 super-models del planeta, Joanna Krupa, quien es también el rostro y cuerpo de varias marcas de moda, se desnuda y une a la campaña citada, cuya estética de corte sensual, se ha acercado muchas veces a lo que podría denominarse un estilo “página 3″.
En alguna ocasión escribí un artículo referente al uso del sexo como parte de la imagen publicitaria, defendiendo la tesis que sólo cuando el producto o servicio a anunciar, tenga un cruce con el concepto sexo, se puede utilizar este tipo de imágenes, ya que de otra manera, la campaña carece de sentido y sólo será blanco de miradas pero no de acciones de compra.
En ese contexto, creo que PETA ha logrado hallar ese “crossroad” y lo ha sabido explotar bien, en una campaña que prácticamente ha dado la vuelta al mundo. PETA también maneja otro tipo de diseños para lograr sus objetivos, para ejemplo está su reciente concurso para creativos “Young Guns International Advertising Award”, donde se buscaba apoyar la defensa de aves de corral. Design Against Fur! U.S. Winners To Be Celebrated

WASHINGTON—The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) will announce the U.S. winners of the third annual Design Against Fur! competition, a worldwide student poster design contest sponsored by The Fur Free Alliance at The Vitra Store, 29 Ninth Avenue NYC, on Monday, May 2nd from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Please join the students, professors, judges and The HSUS to celebrate a competition that is dynamic and successful because of the talent and enthusiasm of the students.

The competition is a forum for young art and design students worldwide to put their creative talents to work on behalf of animals by designing an innovative anti-fur poster. The HSUS hosts the competition in the United States. Contests have run concurrently in Canada, Europe, and the UK & Ireland. Fur Free Alliance members will view winning posters from these regional competitions this June, in London, and a Grand Prize winner will be selected from a pool of 12 posters.

Design Against Fur! is open to all students enrolled in a recognized college or university during the winter of 2004 and the spring of 2005 who would like to design an innovative anti-fur poster. Prizes for the winning entries include $1000 for the United States winner, $500 for the runner up and $250 for third place. The top three U.S. entries are automatically entered into the international competition where they can win $5000 US and a trip to a European capital.

The message conveyed in this year's poster was: "fur is cruel".

Commenting on the U.S. competition, internationally renowned fashion designer Todd Oldham praised the work of the contestants, finding that many of the designs "have a really smart edge that communicates the message in a creative and unique style."

HSUS Director, Mutts cartoonist and DAF Judge, Patrick McDonnell states, "I am continually heartened to see the compassion and talent of our future designers. As they become integral to the fashion industry and join the ranks of Stella McCartney and Todd Oldham, we will hopefully see a new day where this ugly practice of killing animals for fashion ceases forever. Let's look forward to that day becoming a reality soon."

Conway Williamson and Michael Haje, Creative Directors and founding partners of Lodge 212, a New York based creative collective that develops creative product for advertising, design and film state: "This show had a lot of great work in terms of design and ideas, with a number of simple yet powerful executions. We gravitated toward the entries that we thought featured the most original take on this topic. I'll never look at a fur coat the same again."

Dan Rollman, a full time copywriter at Goodby, Silverstein and Partners, in San Francisco, commented that: "I'm glad students are creating ads that promote a social cause instead of just a product. Hopefully they'll be inspired to continue using advertising as a social platform once they enter the professional world."

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Many fur or fur-trimmed jackets sold in the United States as having "faux fur" -- or not labeled at all -- are actually made, at least in part, from dog fur, the Humane Society of the United States said at a Capitol Hill news conference Wednesday.
Out of 25 jackets that it tested, the group said, 24 were incorrectly labeled. In many cases, it said, tests showed the fur came from raccoon dogs, a fox-like nocturnal residents of Asian and northern European forests that bear a remarkable resemblance to raccoons.
Raccoon dogs are part of the canine family.
It said it had bought the jackets in the United States from a variety of department stores, including Macy's, Burlington Coat Factory and J.C. Penney. Designers and brands included Sean John, Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, it said. Most of the jackets tested were labeled as coming from China. Law prohibits the import or sale of dog and cat fur products. But if the amount of fur on a product is valued at less than $150, no label is required.
Lawmakers move to ban imports


Rep. Jim Moran, D-Virginia, said consumers are being duped into buying garments that are trimmed with fur but are mislabeled as faux fur or not labeled at all.
Moran said he and Rep. Mike Ferguson, R-New Jersey, plan to continue their efforts to plug the loopholes that allow such products, in part by adding the raccoon dog to the list of outlawed furs and requiring all products to be labeled, regardless of value.
The two representatives said they have reintroduced legislation they first put forward during the last session of Congress.
The Humane Society said that it is in discussion with many of the department stores that sold the garments it tested, and several had pulled such products from their stores when shown the group's findings.
In a statement posted on its Web site, the Humane Society said its ongoing investigation into fur products found:

<LI>Raccoon dog fur on coats sold online as having raccoon or rabbit fur.


Mislabeled or unidentified raccoon fur on other jackets.
