Urgent help needed for Fortnum & Mason foie gras protest 6 September
StopFortnumAndMasonFoieGrasCruelty.com@peta.org.uk
I am writing in the hope that you can spare us an hour of your time on 6 September for a very important protest for our Fortnum & Mason campaign which will be taking place outside the store at 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.
Thursday is a big day for Ewan Venters, the new managing director of Fortnum & Mason. We desperately need as many people as possible to join us (smartly dressed, please!) to speak out against the store's continued sale of cruelly produced foie gras.
As you know, the foie gras that Fortnum & Mason sell in their food hall and serve in their restaurants is the product of immense animal suffering. The terrified geese are force-fed huge amounts of grain several times a day via a pipe that is rammed down their throats. Their livers become diseased and can swell to up to 10 times their normal size before the birds are slaughtered and their livers are sold as foie gras. The abominably cruel production of foie gras is quite rightly prohibited in Britain and is universally condemned by animal welfare groups, avian experts, veterinarians and scientists. It is particularly shameful given that Fortnum & Mason, a store which blatantly trades on its British heritage, resorts to paying mercenaries in France to abuse geese because it would be illegal to do so here.
Will you please join PETA on 6 September to help us convince Ewan Venters that the time has come to rid Fortnum & Mason of this "torture in a tin"? If you are able to spare the time to help, we would be extremely grateful. I can be contacted at StopFortnumAndMasonFoieGrasCruelty.com@peta.org.uk or on 0207 357 9229, extension 227. I look forward to hearing from you!

SIGN PETITION
http://foiegrasfarms.org/
In view of the overwhelming footage of foie gras farms in Spain and France investigated by animal rights organization Animal Equality, where I could see the terrible physical and psychological harm that exploited ducks and geese were subjected to, in order to fatten their livers, I request that you immediately take position against this industry that systematically abuses animals and ethics.
The foie gras industry is in direct conflict with the values of a morally advanced society, a society in the XXI century cannot ignore that animals are beings with the capacity to feel and experience emotions and, therefore, individuals worthy of respect and protection.
For these reasons and hoping that like me, you appreciate the work of Animal Equality for bringing to light a reality that consumers and citizens of the European Union have a right to know, I ask:
• In your role as Commissioner responsible for animal Welfare, to present a legislative proposal based on the Directive (98/58/EC) of the European Council banning force feeding of animals (excepted if necessary for health reasons) for every country the European Union without exception, as similar regulation already exists in Austria, Denmark, Finland, UK, Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, Ireland, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Sweden or the Netherlands.
• To present a legislative proposal banning the import and sell of animal products resulting of force feeding in the European Union, as most recently enforced in the state of California.
Yours sincerely,
Foie gras: How much suffering can you swallow? SIGN THE PETITION NOW TO END THIS TORTURE To be sent to: John Dalli, European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy.
The production of foie gras has been banned in Argentina, Austria, California (USA), Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Finland, Germany, Holland, Italy, Ireland, Israel, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey. The only European Union countries where it is permitted are Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Hungary and Spain.
Now is the time to move forward, show our respect for animals and ban this abhorrent practice.And you can make a difference.There are many of us who believe, as you do, that animals deserve respect.

"The struggle of the ducks to survive was something that could also be heard. The sound of their pounding feet against the metal was overwhelming. Its intensity was gradually reduced, from a great racket to a slight tinkling noise, as the animals slowly died.
I witnessed something: the kernels sprung from the crops of the ducks at the time that they were stabbed to death. The animals were literally saturated with the food that they had been forced to swallow. The scene was pretty nasty, as the corn was mixed with blood that was splattered on the walls and floor, forming a strange mixture."

Foie gras products are not "wholesome," as stated on the USDA inspection seal. Currently, on U.S. foie gras farms, ducks are force fed three pounds of mash a day through a pipe shoved down their throats -- the equivalent of force-feeding 45 pounds of food to an adult human -- inducing liver disease known as hepatic lipidosis that often cripples and poisons the birds. The cruel and unhealthy force-feeding of birds for foie gras production has been banned in over a dozen countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Israel, and in the state of California.
Foie gras comes from birds who, in addition to being horribly abused, are diseased and extremely ill. Foie gras needs to be banned outright as unfit for human consumption. Remove foie gras from the U.S. food supply now.

Shocking Footage Exposes Cruelty and Abuse on Farms Supplying Fortnum & Mason Foie Gras Distributor
A shocking new PETA UK undercover investigation of several farms represented by the Sarlat Perigord cooperative, from which Fortnum & Mason's distributor sources foie gras, has revealed the horrific suffering of birds.
The distressing video footage, narrated by PETA's foie gras campaign ambassador Sir Roger Moore, shows the grim reality for geese whose bloated livers end up being sold as foie gras. These intelligent, gentle birds are condemned to spend the last weeks of their life in small, barren pens, where they are forced to stand 24 hours a day on metal grating as their urine and faeces build up underneath. The geese panic and struggle as they are roughly grabbed by the throat and a metal pipe is forced down their throats so that huge amounts of grain can be pumped into their stomachs. This cruel process happens three to four times a day – every day. Their distended livers – which can swell to up to 10 times their normal size – press against their lungs, causing them to pant constantly. Some of the birds can no longer stand because their legs can't support the weight of their livers, resulting in possible leg fractures.
Veterinarians and avian experts agree – there is no way to humanely produce foie gras. A store which trades on its British heritage should not be supporting a product so vile that its production is outlawed in the UK and many other countries. Please help PETA and Sir Roger end this cruelty. Contact Fortnum & Mason's new managing director, Ewan Venters, today and tell him to follow the lead of Selfridges and Harvey Nichols by ending his store's shameful support of this barbaric trade.

Foie Gras (fatty liver) is derived from the French term and it is a delicacy that the elite enjoy. It is manufactured from ducks and geese through force feeding. This is one of the cruelest and barbaric forms of torture to animals.
Foie Gras dates back to 2 500 BC to Egyptian times when geese were taken and then slaughtered for the liver, which was a delicacy then in Egypt. Today, France is the largest producer and supplier of Foie Gras, supplying 80% in total of the world's demand. France, therefore, is the largest culprit of all countries that practice this abusive trade.
The Food & Agricultural Organisation (FAO) stated in 2002 that Foie Gras production raises serious animal welfare issues and is not a practice that is condoned by the F.A.O.
The European Unions Scientific Committee on animal health and welfare produced a report in 1998 entitled welfare aspects of the production of Foie Gras in ducks and geese in which it stated the following;
1a) force feeding as currently practised is detrimental to the welfare of the birds 1b) the management and housing of the birds used in the production of Foie Gras have a negative impact on their welfare.
The injuries listed below have been drawn up by experts in this field;
1. potential for injury due to multiple insertions of a long feeding tube with the possibility of secondary infection 2. distress from restraint and manipulations associated with force feeding 3. compromised health and welfare resulting from obesity, including the potential for impaired locomotion and lethargy 4. creation of a vulnerable animal more likely to suffer from otherwise tolerable conditions such as heat and transport
What these graceful birds of paradise endure;
The geese and ducks are kept in isolation during the force feeding period to make handling easier. They are kept in conditions where they can not turn around or perform any natural behaviours and sanitary conditions are very poor.
The birds become extremely stressed during force feeding. The procedure is very painful and most uncomfortable. Injuries and deaths are very common. The force feeding process increases the size of the liver ten fold and the birds rapidly become obese. Their weight increases by 80%-90%, the liver becomes 50% fat and stops working properly.
The birds' obesity leads to respiratory stress and reduced mobility. Many birds lose the ability to walk and some birds become so obese they die because they can't move to access water. Obese birds are much more susceptible to heat and stress during transport and slaughter and many end up with injuries including broken limbs.
The vast majority of Foie Gras is made up in France (80%) which has a long production history, France produces more than 18,000 tonnes of Foie Gras annually, slaughtering more than 30 million ducks and 700,000 thousand geese in the process. (Figures not to date for 2012)
How is Foie Gras made please read below;
The force feeding involves inserting a 6-10 inch tube down the throat and forcing large amounts of high carbohydrate (usually corn based) food in to the gullet using an endless screw or pneumatic mechanism. This is carried out 2-3 times a day with up to 500g of food being feed each time.
Ducks or geese hatched in the spring are typically raised in intensive conditions on ad lib feeding. In the autumn they are force fed for 2-3 weeks by gavage to massively increase their liver before being sent to slaughter.
Foie Gras has been banned in some countries, but not all, and as of immediate effect this has to end, failing which we will push for boycotts in all countries that allow this barbaric and abusive torture of our birds.
THE FOLLOWING DEMANDS MUST BE MET WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT OR ACTION WILL BE TAKEN BY US, THE INTERNATIONAL ANIMAL RESCUE FOUNDATION;
1. ALL FOIE GRAS PRODUCTION MUST BE HALTED WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT IN ALL COUNTRIES THAT PRODUCE FOIE GRAS.
2. ALL FARMS THAT PRODUCE AND MANUFACTURE FOIE GRAS MUST STOP PRODUCTION WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT OR SANCTIONS WILL BE IMPLEMENTED AGAINST YOUR COUNTRY.
3. ALL GEESE AND DUCKS MUST BE PLACED ON A PROTECTION ORDER, PREVENTING ANYONE FROM PRODUCING FOIE GRAS.
4. A COMPLETE BAN ON ALL USAGE OF FOIE GRAS IN RESTAURANTS WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT.
5. A COMPLETE BAN ON ALL IMPORTS AND EXPORTS OF FOIE GRAS WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT.
6. A COMPLETE BAN ON ALL SALES IN HYPER MARKETS AND VENDORS OF FOIE GRAS WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT.
STATEMENT
SHOULD OUR DEMANDS NOT BE MET, WE THE I.A.R.F (INTERNATIONAL ANIMAL RESCUE FOUNDATION) AND ACTIVISTS OF EUROPE AND INTERNATIONAL WATERS WILL SEEK TO BOYCOTT EVERY PRODUCT FROM ALL COUNTRIES THAT CONTINUE TO PRODUCE FOIE GRAS.
SHOULD OUR DEMANDS NO BE MET THEN WE, THE I.A.R.F (INTERNATIONAL ANIMAL RESCUE FOUNDATION) AND ACTIVISTS OF EUROPE AND INTERNATIONAL WATERS WILL SEEK TO EXPOSE ALL RESTAURANTS, IMPORTERS, EXPORTERS, AND INDIVIDUAL BUYERS.

✦ FOIE GRAS: ===Physiology and preparation=== Geese and ducks are omnivorous, and, like many birds, have expansive throats allowing them to store large amounts of food, either whole or predigested, in the crop, an enlarged portion of the esophagus, while awaiting digestion in the stomach, similar to python feeding. In the wild this dilation allows them to swallow large foodstuffs, such as a whole fish, for a later, long digestion. Wild geese may consume 300 grams of protein and another 800 grams of grasses per day. Farmed geese allowed to graze on carrots adapt to eat 100 grams of protein, but may consume up to 2500 grams of the carrots per day. A wild duck may double its weight in the autumn, storing fat throughout much of its body and especially on the liver, in preparation for winter migration. Force feeding produces a liver that is six to ten times its ordinary size !!! Storage of fat in the liver produces steatosis of the liver cells ! ------------------ ✦Main producers: Today, France is by far the largest producer and consumer of foie gras, though it is produced and consumed worldwide, particularly in other European nations, the United States, and China Country Production (tons, 2005) % of total -France 18,450 78.5% -Hungary 1,920 8.2% -Bulgaria 1,500 6.4% -United States 340 (2003) 1.4% -Canada 200 (2005) 0.9% -China 1500.6% -Others 940 4.0% ✦Total 23,500 100%
✦France is the leading producer and consumer of duck and goose foie gras. In 2005, the country produced 18,450 tonnes of foie gras (78.5% of the world's estimated total production of 23,500 tonnes) of which 96% was duck liver and the rest goose liver. Total French consumption of foie gras was 19,000 tonnes in 2005. Approximately 30,000 people are members of the French foie gras industry, with 90% of them residing in the Périgord (Dordogne), the Midi-Pyrénées régions in the southwest, and Alsace. The European Union recognizes the foie gras produced according to traditional farming methods (label rouge) in southwestern France with a geographical indication of provenance. ✦Hungary is the world's second-largest foie gras (libamáj) producer and the largest exporter (1,920 tonnes in 2005). France is the principal market for Hungarian foie gras; mainly exported raw. Approximately 30,000 Hungarian goose farmers are dependent on the foie gras industry. French food companies spice, process, and cook the foie gras so it may be sold as a French product in its domestic and export markets. ✦Bulgaria produced 1,500 tons of foie gras in 2005; Canada also has a thriving foie gras industry. The demand for foie gras in the Far East is such that China has become a sizeable producer.
✦✦Controversy : source " Wikipedia " Gavage feeding as documented by animal rights and welfare group, GAIA -Voice of the Voiceless Main article: Foie gras controversy See also: Force-feeding#Force-feeding of animals Gavage-based foie gras production is controversial, due to the force feeding procedure, and the possible health consequences of an enlarged liver.[citation needed] A number of countries and other jurisdictions have laws against force feeding or the sale of foie gras due to how it is traditionally produced. In modern gavage-based foie gras production, force feeding takes place 12–18 days before slaughter. The duck or goose is typically fed a controlled amount of corn mash through a tube inserted in the animal's cuticle-lined esophagus. Foie gras production has been banned in some nations because of the force-feeding process, including some members of the European Union,.The city of Chicago banned the production and selling of foie gras from 2006 until 2008, when it reversed its decision based on the criticisms that the ban was maneuvered into a larger package that the city council had voted on.The state of California has also prohibited the production and sale of foie gras, effective 1 July 2012. Violators will receive a $1,000 fine. Some restaurant owners have declared they plan to use a loophole in the new law; if restaurant goers bring in their own foie gras, restaurants may legally prepare and serve it. Animal rights and welfare groups such as PETA, Viva!, and the Humane Society of the United States contend that foie gras production methods, and force feeding in particular, constitute cruel and inhumane treatment of animals. Specific complaints include livers swollen to many times their normal size, impaired liver function, expansion of the abdomen making it difficult for birds to breathe, death if the force feeding is continued, and scarring of the esophagus[citation needed]. PETA claims that the insertion and removal of the feeding tube scratch the throat and the esophagus, causing irritations and wounds and thus exposing the animal to risk of mortal infections.
✦Empirical research regarding the health and welfare of the bird during the production of foie gras is limited in quantity and quality. A recent study demonstrated oral amyloid-A fibril transmissibility which raised food safety issues with consumption of foie gras over "concerns that products such as pâté de foie gras may activate a reactive systemic amyloidosis in susceptible consumers". Foie gras as an amyloid-containing food product hastened the development of amyloidosis. Amyloidosis may be transmissible, akin to the infectious nature of prion-related illnesses. However, a correlation between foie gras consumption and these diseases has not been confirmed. EU Scientific Committee on Animal Health and Welfare The report of the European Union's Scientific Committee on Animal Health and Animal Welfare on Welfare Aspects of the Production of Foie Gras in Ducks and Geese, adopted on 16 December 1998, is an 89-page review of studies from several producing countries. It examines several indicators of animal welfare, including physiological indicators, liver pathology, and mortality rate. It strongly concludes that "force feeding, as currently practised, is detrimental to the welfare of the birds." Members of the committee describe how geese and ducks show "avoidance behaviour indicating aversion for the person who feeds them and the feeding procedure". Although the committee reported that there is no "conclusive" scientific evidence on the aversive nature of force feeding, and that evidence of injury is "small", in their overall recommendations, the committee stated that "the management and housing of the birds used for producing foie gras have a negative impact on their welfare".

Speak Out Against Amazon's Cruelty Sign the petition calling on Amazon to end the sale of foie gras. Dear Jeff, I am appalled to learn from Mercy For Animals that you are allowing the sale of foie gras—the diseased livers of tortured ducks—on Amazon.com. Force-feeding animals to produce foie gras is so cruel it has been banned in California and more than a dozen countries. Recognizing its inherent cruelty, major restaurants and grocers refuse to sell foie gras, including Costco, Safeway, Target, Giant Eagle, Whole Foods Market, and Wolfgang Puck. In the past, Amazon has barred the sale of whale meat, shark fin soup, and animal fighting videos. It's time for Amazon to implement an ethical policy against the sale of foie gras too. No socially responsible company should be supporting this type of blatant cruelty to animals.
