We, the undersigned, strongly urge the European and UK Parliament to ban the production AND Importation of Foie Gras in Europe.
The birds are kept in tiny wire cages or packed into sheds. Pipes are repeatedly, cruelly, forced down the birds' throats, and up to 4 pounds of grain and fat are pumped into their stomachs two or three times every day for two to three weeks until they can barely move and are on the verge of organ rupture and death.
This is totally unacceptable and cruel..Due to free trade laws, UK being one of the biggest importers of Foie Gras, are importing this cruelty

Here is what Michael Ginor, co-owner of Hudson Valley Foie Gras, had to say about his business to Mark Caro, author of the new book The Foie Gras Wars:

"I don't have the conviction in our righteousness the way my partner does," Ginor, a fellow Israeli, said over coffee a few days after Izzy's trip up to Kohler. (Ginor happened to be in Chicago for--believe it or not--Charlie Trotter's 20th anniversary weekend. Trotter had invited him personally, despite their public sparring.) So while Izzy took umbrage at Peter Sagal's defense of foie gras, Ginor sided with the writer: "I have to agree with that Saveur thing. I couldn't tell that any animal that's meant for slaughter is not suffering. I don't quite know how that's possible. I would think any animal that's economically grown suffers some. There's no question that the duck on day 28 of feeding is not as happy as a duck that hasn't been fed. But the question then does become: How does that duck feel compared to, let's say, a woman in her ninth month of pregnancy? I don't think there's ever a woman in her ninth month of pregnancy who's really psyched about that day."
Right, though having a baby is a happier and more voluntary outcome than what happens to the duck. [This is Caro, the author, speaking]
"To tell you that it's a 100-percent altruistic business that I have no issues with, no, I can't say that," Ginor continued. "It's funny, though, when I started, I never had a problem with it. When I came into foie gras, it was purely as a culinarian, not as a farmer. I had no knowledge of agriculture really. I just thought it was a great product that I would love to have and that others would love to have, and I came into it very, very excited. I knew there were issues or could be issues, and when Izzy showed me the process and explained to me, I felt like I was never 100-percent wholesome with it in the sense that I think you can't be 100-percent wholesome with it. But then I was convinced, I guess, that it's not different or worse than anything else out there that goes to feed human beings. That I kind of believed. But nevertheless, I see the issues. I understand the issues. I partially agree with the issues."

Ban the forced feeding of ducks and geese

In Belgium every year ten thousands of ducks and thousands of geese are being forced-fed and killed for the making of foie gras, a so called "delicacy".
A thick, fatty substance is shoved into their throat with a funnel, or tube. You can compare it with a person of 80kg who has to eat 20kg of spaghetti every day. This torture has got to stop! This petition will be send to GAIA : the Global Action in the Interest of Animals

For a 150 pound human, this would be equivalent to 60 pounds of food per day. The pipes puncture many birds' throats, sometimes causing the animals to bleed to death. This cruel procedure causes the birds' livers to become diseased and swell to up to 10 times their normal size. Many birds become too sick to stand up. The birds who survive the force-feeding are killed, and their livers are sold for foie gras.

Victory: Harvey Nichols Ends Foie Gras Sales!

Following meetings with PETA – and thanks, too, to a lovely letter from Sir Roger Moore – Harvey Nichols has agreed to remove foie gras from their restaurant menus come the New Year. The first step came in 2007 when, after meeting with PETA, Harvey Nichols agreed to remove foie gras from their department store shelves. Selfridge’s agreed not to sell foie gras late last year, following an appeal on PETA’s behalf by our 2009 Person of the Year, Sir Roger Moore. Now we have our eye on Fortnum and Mason, which continues to serve the livers of force-fed birds. PETA is pushing forward in our campaign to end the misery of ducks and geese who suffer so greatly for this “torture in a tin”. Although we are achieving victories, there are still millions of birds crammed into tiny pens or cages, suffering the horror of being force-fed via a tube shoved down their gullets several times a day. This isn't the plot of some twisted horror film — it's reality for the ducks and geese who are killed to produce foie gras, a vile product that will be found in restaurants and on holiday tables this season. Right now, ducks and geese on foie gras farms are being force-fed through tubes that have been shoved down their throats. Sir Roger Moore despises the hideously cruel foodstuff known as foie gras. Why? Because he knows about the terrible abuse and suffering endured by ducks and geese who are force-fed nearly two kilograms of grain, maize and fat daily – the equivalent of roughly 20 kilograms of pasta for a human – to make every tin of this deadly product. Ducks and geese are gentle animals – but their lives on foie gras farms are filled with violence and pain. Several times a day, they are force-fed through a long pipe which is rammed down their throats and into their stomachs. The amount of food that is rapidly pumped into the birds' tiny bodies is so huge it can cause the animals' stomachs to burst, resulting in internal bleeding and a painful death. Other birds are left in agony and unable to drink when the feeding pipe rips a hole into their necks.

The animals who survive this daily torment suffer intensely as their livers swell to up to 10 times their normal size – their diseased livers are then sold on store shelves as foie gras. Sir Roger Moore has been the champion of our campaign to rid shop shelves and restaurant menus of foie gras. He has been instrumental in our victories over the internationally renowned department store Selfridges and most recently Harvey Nichols restaurants. Dear Fellow Friend of PETA, I have a confession: I used to eat foie gras. However, when I saw PETA's video footage on foie gras production and the deadly force-feeding of ducks and geese, I felt compelled to do something to help stop this cruel "delicacy". Once my eyes were opened, I become a passionate campaigner against foie gras –volunteering to narrate PETA's documentary about the barbarity of its production, writing to every member of the House of Commons asking them to help end foie gras sales in the UK and penning pieces for national publications to spread the word against this repugnant practice.

I also joined forces with PETA on a relentless two-year campaign to convince the Selfridges department store chain to pull foie gras from its shelves, mobilising concerned individuals to bombard the company with thousands of e-mails, phone calls and letters. The day Selfridges announced that they would no longer carry foie gras was one of the proudest of my life. And of the many honours that have been bestowed upon me over the years, few have moved me as much as being awarded the PETA UK 2009 Person of the Year award for my work. I am most humbled that my passion has helped make a positive difference in the lives of these animals. However, despite our victories, the battle to outlaw foie gras in the UK, across Europe and around the world is far from won. The documentary video shows slaughterhouse workers pulling heads off of live ducks, smashing ducks into floors and walls and cutting the throats of fully conscious ducks. Workers repeatedly punch, kick and throw live ducks. Baby ducklings are crushed and suffocated to death in plastic garbage bags. Other ducklings are left to freeze to death in minus 20 degree weather in metal trash cans. Shame on the Province of Quebec and the federal government of Canada for not taking the appropriate actions to stop this injustice. There is no excuse for turning a blind eye to such cruel treatment of animals.

The entire Canadian foie gras industry is located in Quebec.

• Three producers – Elevages Perigord, Aux Champs Delise and Palmex – account for the majority of production, but there are several other small producers in the Province.

• Quebec has been producing foie gras for only 12 years. But in that time production has increased to 8500 livers per week, for a total output of 2 tons.

• According to Quebec foie gras producers, they export about 30% of their products to the United States, 10% to the rest of Canada and the remainder is consumed within Quebec.

Quebec Foie Gras Investigation Overview

Several months ago, Global Action Network, in collaboration with Farm Sanctuary, embarked on an extensive undercover investigation of Canada’s largest foie gras farm – Elevages Perigord. The investigator worked at Elevages Perigord on daily basis for more than twelve weeks, and he documented all aspects of this vertically integrated operation, including the hatchery, fattening sheds, force feeding sheds, slaughterhouse and breeding facility. Using hidden camera equipment, the investigator gathered close to 100 hours of video footage and countless photographs. The video evidence shows a large number of apparent violations of the animal welfare provisions in the Criminal Code of Canada and the 1990 Meat Inspection Act. The investigator filmed as slaughterhouse workers pulled heads off of live ducks, smashed ducks into floors and walls and cut the throats of fully conscious ducks. Workers repeatedly punched, kicked and threw live ducks. Baby ducklings were crushed and suffocated to death in plastic garbage bags. Extreme Cruelty

• Foie gras is the French term for "fatty liver". Marketed as a gourmet food, foie gras is a product of extreme cruelty to animals.

• In modern foie gras factory farms, geese and ducks are intensively raised in large, enclosed barns and never see daylight until they are taken to slaughter.

• For the last 2 weeks of their lives, the birds are forced into individual wire mesh cages, barely larger than their bodies, which virtually lock the birds in place. Thus restrained, the birds are unable to escape the farm workers and mechanized feeding system.

• One by one, the farm worker grabs each immobilized bird and forces a metal pipe down their throats. An enormous amount of a corn-and-oil mixture is pumped by a machine directly into their gullets in just a few seconds—up to one-third of the birds' own body weight each day.

• Birds suffer tremendously during and after the force-feeding process. Within a few weeks, their livers have swollen up to ten times their normal size, and the birds can scarcely stand, walk, or even breathe. Birds on foie gras farms have been observed panting and struggling to stand, using their wings to push themselves forward when their crippled legs can no longer support them.

• The mortality rate on foie gras farms is up to 20 times higher than the death rate on conventional duck farms. Birds used in foie gras production often die when the metal feeding tubes puncture their necks, when their stomachs literally "burst" from the enormous volume of food they are forced to ingest and when force-feeding overfills them to the point of suffocation.

• Necropsies performed on foie gras birds have shown them to suffer from grossly enlarged livers, lacerated tracheas and esophagi, pneumonia, throats and gullets severely impacted with undigested corn, massive internal bacterial and fungal growth - all consequences of the production method for which veterinary care is not profitable.

Origins

• The idea for this cruel force-feeding practice is thought to have originated in ancient Egypt, after people noticed that wild geese consume large amounts of food prior to embarking on long migrations.

• Because Egyptians, and later Romans, considered the fat-laden flesh and organs of those geese caught after pre-migration feeding to taste better, they sought to artificially induce and exaggerate the condition in captive geese.

• Thereafter, the practice of force-feeding of captive geese and ducks took hold, later degenerating and devolving into what is now the modern foie gras industry.

Canadian Foie Gras Production

• The entire Canadian foie gras industry is located in Quebec.

• France produces and consumes 90 percent of the world's foie gras, with roughly 24 million ducks and half a million geese killed annually. Nearly all the birds are raised in intensive confinement systems, and all endure brutal, intensive force feeding, several times a day, prior to their deaths.

• Approximately 500,000 birds are killed annually for foie gras in the United States.

• Other major producers of Foie Gras include Hungary, Bulgaria and China.

Industry Spin

• The foie gras industry often tries to justify its practices by saying they are just an extension of the natural, pre-migration gorging behaviors of migratory fowl. This claim is entirely false.

• While wild geese and ducks may increase their food intake prior to migration, they do not gorge themselves up until the point of death. The livers of wild ducks and geese have been known to expand up to twice their normal size prior to migration, but not a ten-fold expansion as is found in forced-feeding production.

• Notably, the duck species (Muscovy and Mulard or Moulard) used in foie gras production are non-migratory and not predisposed to gorging of any kind.

• Wild birds who do migrate quickly expend any excess fat during their migrations, unlike the severely confined birds in foie gras facilities. Artificially-induced gorging is extremely painful and debilitating to these birds.

International Response

• In 2006, Chicago banned the sale of foie gras.

• In 2004, California passed a law banning the sale and production of foie gras (effective in 2012).

• In 2002, Pope Benedict XVI denounced force-feeding of geese as being in violation of Biblical principles.

• In the past decade, a large number of nations have banned foie gras production, including Israel, Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Luxembourg, Norway, and Poland.

• Other countries whose laws effectively ban the force feeding of animals for foie gras production include Holland, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

1. Don’t Buy Foie Gras

Foie gras is marketed as a fine food, but it is the product of extreme cruelty to animals. Refuse to buy foie gras products, and urge all your friends and family to do the same.

2. Tell Supermarkets to Stop Selling Foie Gras

The fastest way to shut down cruel foie gras production is to close its markets. Supermarkets care about your business, so please contact these supermarket chains that sell foie gras:

Loblaw owns the Quebec-based Maxi and Provigo, both of which market foie gras. In addition, Loblaw’s stores in Ontario indicate they occasionally sell Foie Gras. Please contact the Chief Operating Officer of Loblaw, Mr. Dalton Phillips, and tell him you will not shop at Loblaws stores until he instructs his companies to stop selling foie gras.

3. Don’t Patronize Restaurants that Serve Foie Gras

If you see foie gras on the menu of a restaurant, don’t give them your business! And make sure to tell the owner and chef of your decision. Tell them about this website so they can become informed about the cruel origins of the product they are selling.

4. Tell Canada’s Minister of Agriculture to Ban Foie Gras Production

Please contact Canada’s Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Gerry Ritz – tell him you want Canada to ban foie gras production. In doing so, Canada would join Israel, Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Holland, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom – all of which prohibit the production of foie gras.

Urge Fortnum & Mason to Drop Cruel Foie Gras

Following talks with PETA in 2008, Fortnum & Mason stated that it would no longer sell duck foie gras. I am sorry to tell you that Fortnum & Mason continues to sell goose foie gras in its store and its restaurants.

All major supermarkets in the UK have refused to stock foie gras, and celebrities such as Sir Roger Moore, Steven Berkoff and Kate Winslet have spoken out against the vile product. Having previously persuaded both Selfridges and Harvey Nichols to drop foie gras, Moore has joined forces with PETA once more and has turned his attention to Fortnum and Mason, starting by firing off a letter to the retailer, before featuring on a PETA ad which was placed at Piccadilly Circus tube station.

Deprived of everything that is natural to them, ducks and geese who are used in foie gras production suffer from frustration and stress. They are crammed into tiny pens or individual cages fouled with faeces and blood and often develop skeletal disorders and respiratory problems as a result of the forcefeeding. Pipes are shoved down their throats several times a day to force approximately two kilograms of grain, maize and fat into their stomachs. In human terms, that is the equivalent of roughly 20 kilograms of pasta per day.

The pipes sometimes puncture the birds' throats, causing them unbearable pain and making it impossible to drink. Pumps used to force food into the birds' stomachs can cause severe tissue damage and internal bleeding. This painful overfeeding process can even cause the birds' internal organs to rupture. Those who survive the forced-feedings suffer intensely as their livers swell to up to 10 times their normal size. After several weeks of this torture, the birds are hung upside down and slaughtered, and their livers are sold as foie gras.

Every year, millions of ducks and geese are subjected to a life of cruelty, pain and suffering for this so-called delicacy. As a result of this violent and cruel practice, many birds suffer bruising and irritation to the oesophagus and the pipes often tear holes in the birds' sensitive necks. There is no kind way to steal an animal's liver. Please put an end to Fortnum & Mason's complicity in this torture by removing foie gras from the company's shelves and restaurant menus immediately.

The citizens and groups supporting the Manifesto for the abolition of foie gras call attention to the unescapable ban of force-feeding -hence, of foie gras production.
"No animal shall be provided with food or liquid in a manner (...) which may cause unnecessary suffering or injury."

Force-feeding has already been banned in most European Union countries. It has been banned since January 1, 1999 in Poland. It has just been banned in Italy, Israel and California on grounds of cruelty. In Chicago selling foie gras, including in restaurants, has just been banned on same grounds.
Foie gras violates the principles of the European Convention for the protection of animals kept for farming purposes.

A barbaric custom

Foie gras (literally 'fat liver') is the diseased liver of a goose or duck which has been force fed several times a day by means of a metal tube, 20 - 30 centimetres long, being thrust down his throat till it reaches the stomach. To force his body to produce foie gras, the bird must ingest a huge amount of corn in a few seconds. This results in the liver becoming almost ten times larger than its normal size, and the bird develops an illness, hepatic steatosis.

If the bird struggles when the tube is thrust down his throat, or if his oesophagus contracts with the urge to vomit, he runs the risk of suffocation and fatal perforation of the neck.
Insertion of the tube causes lesions which become germ-infested and painfully inflamed. The unbalanced and forced over-feeding frequently causes potentially fatal diseases of the digestive system. Immediately after each force-feeding session the bird suffers from breathlessness and diarrhea. The enlargement of the liver makes it difficult to breathe, and all movement is painful. If this treatment were to be continued, it would cause the death of the force-fed animals. They are slaughtered before they die from its consequences. However, the weakest animals are dying when they arrive in the slaughter room, and many don't last that long : the mortality rate of ducks is ten to twenty times greater than usual during the force-feeding period.

Concentrated suffering

The inherent violence of foie gras production would alone justify its abolition. However, for most of these animals their ordeal is not limited to the brutality of force-feeding. Many are amputated of part of their beak, without anaesthetic, by pliers or scissors. It is natural for ducks to spend a large part of their life on the water. In these 'farms', many birds are kept in sheds, then in cages where their feet are injured by the wire floor. The cages are so small that the birds cannot even turn around, much less stand up or flap their wings. Many of those who survive until slaughter have their bones broken during transport and handling, and then by being hung upside down to be electrocuted prior to having their throats cut. Female ducks are usually ground up alive or gassed shortly after hatching, because their livers have more veins than those of males.

Pleasure for some, suffering for others

How can the simple pleasure of eating his liver justify imposing such a horrible life on a sentient being who, just like us, feels pain and distress ? Just because he belongs to another species, does that give us the right to remain deaf to his suffering, and silent in the face of this immoral slavery ? There are laws to protect animals against torture and cruelty. These laws are being deliberately ignored in the case of the 30 million animals used each year for foie gras, mainly in France. We are told that "necessary suffering" is acceptable. However, consumption of this product is totally unnecessary. Nobody, not even those who make a profit from this trade, would dare assert the contrary. The price per kilo of foie gras keeps going down for the consumer, while the animals, whose bodies are deliberately made to suffer, pay dearly. France is also paying dearly for foie gras, as it is seen as a reactionary nation compared with those countries which have banned its production. How on earth can you say that a barbaric custom, consisting of sticking a funnel or a pneumatic pump down the throat of a caged animal, is a tradition of high culture ?

Banning foie gras : towards a food production ethic

Recognizing that foie gras production is based on a total disregard for the interests of the animal used to produce it :

• We ask those who force-feed geese and ducks to stop carrying out this abusive practice. The fact that they do not intend to be cruel to these animals does not reduce the suffering they cause.
• We ask those who profit from foie gras, without any ethical consideration, to cease their participation in this sick business.
• We ask scientific and veterinary authorities who are genuinely concerned by animal well-being to have the courage, despite political and economic pressure, to denounce foie gras production methods for what they are.
• We ask our judges to remember that there are laws limiting the suffering that can be inflicted on a sentient being, and that consequently the production of foie gras is illegal.
• We ask our politicians to legislate to ban this practice forever.
As consumers who are determined to put ethics on our dinner plates, and aware that this suffering exists solely to please our taste buds, we refuse to buy and to consume these sick livers of tortured animals.
