One week after PETA released the results of our shocking undercover investigation of Professional Laboratory and Research Services, Inc. (PLRS), the North Carolina animal testing facility surrendered nearly 250 dogs and cats and shut its doors for good. We documented numerous horrors inside PLRS, including a test in which 57 cats suffered seizures, foamed at the mouth, and went blind after a chemical was applied to their necks.


Lufthansa agreed to stop transporting dogs and cats to laboratories less than 24 hours after PETA posted photographs and an action alert on our website drawing attention to the plight of more than 50 dogs who were flown on a Lufthansa cargo plane from the U.S. to the notorious Charles River Laboratories in Scotland.


After PETA revealed that the University of Utah (the U) was experimenting on homeless dogs and cats purchased from animal shelters, Utah legislators voted overwhelmingly to amend state law to allow shelters to refuse to release animals to the university. In response, the shelter that was selling most of the dogs and cats to the U ended this shameful practice.

PETA has uncovered numerous cruel tests that the maker of PG Tips, Lyons and Lipton has conducted on animals to evaluate the effects of tea. The following are just a few examples:
• Rabbits were fed a high-fat diet, giving them abnormally high cholesterol levels and hardened arteries and then fed tea in their water. After the experiment, the rabbits' heads were cut off.



• Mutant Mice bred to suffer bowel inflammation were administered tea ingredients in order to see if there were any effects on their condition. After the test, the mice were killed by neck-breaking or suffocation.
• Rats were forced to eat a high-fructose diet, damaging their brains. Others had their abdominal wall punctured and were fed radioactively labelled tea ingredients through a tube in their stomach. All the animals were later killed.
• Piglets were exposed to E coli toxins which cause diarrhoea. As part of the tests, experimenters cut the pigs' intestines apart while the animals were still alive. The pigs were then killed.
Experimenting on animals is not only cruel but also unnecessary. There are cheaper, quicker and more accurate methods available. Yet every three seconds, an animal dies in a European lab.
Typhoo, Twinings, Tesco and Fortnum & Mason have given PETA written confirmation that they don't test their teas on animals – but the maker of PG tips refuses to end its torment of animals.
Vivisection is a sickening example of exploitation on a massive scale. In 2009, more than 3.5 million individual animals were experimented on in the UK. All but a tiny few are now dead.
Animals in laboratories around the world are abused in horrific ways. Poisoned. Starved. Brain-damaged. Paralysed. Mutilated. Irradiated. Burned. Gassed. Electrocuted. When I first met Chester, a macaque monkey, he was trapped in a 17-inch-wide metal box that was caked with his own filth because it hadn't been cleaned in months. His constant lack of stimulation and companionship had made him neurotic, and he raged at his confinement and inability to protect the other monkeys imprisoned in the laboratory from the painful, invasive experiments that they were subjected to.

Thanks to the success of PETA's very first undercover investigation, Chester was freed from the laboratory and moved to a facility designed to meet his physical and psychological needs. He and four other survivors lived out their days in a large, sunny enclosure far from that laboratory. Silver Spring was the very first laboratory that was shut down as a result of the work of an animal rights organization. Victory: Covance Lab Closes Up Shop!


Five years ago, PETA exposed the horrors of Covance's Vienna, Virginia, lab, where workers physically abused animals, screamed obscenities at them, and forced them to endure torturous daily tests. Primates at Covance's lab suffered from stress, and baby monkeys experienced daily nosebleeds because workers shoved hard tubes up their nostrils to pump drugs and chemicals into their stomachs.


Now, after decades of battling the cruelty of Covance, the lab in Vienna, Virginia, is finally closing down! In addition to the Vienna location closing, Covance has also canceled their plans to build another facility, which will save the lives of thousands of animals.



Two thumbs up to the successful closing of Covance and Professional Laboratory Research Services. We can't stop now—animals at another cruel establishment, North Utah Valley Animal Shelter (NUVAS), still need your help. First, Professional Laboratory Research Services shut its doors just days after PETA released the findings of our disturbing undercover investigation there. Now, Covance's horrendous Vienna, Va., laboratory, which PETA investigated five years ago, is closing up shop.

During PETA's 11-month investigation at Covance, our investigator documented that workers struck, choked, and screamed obscenities at frightened and "uncooperative" monkeys. Monkeys suffered from rectal prolapses as a result of constant stress and diarrhea, and baby monkeys' noses bled daily because workers shoved hard tubes up their nostrils to pump experimental chemicals and drugs into their stomachs. As a result of PETA's investigation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture cited and fined Covance for serious violations of the Animal Welfare Act.



PETA has actually been battling this laboratory for nearly two decades. I remember participating in a protest outside the facility back when Covance was known as Hazleton Research Labs, a name made famous by the book The Hot Zone, which was about the Ebola outbreak among monkeys at the now-defunct Hazleton laboratory just a few miles away in Reston, Va.

In addition to closing the hellhole in Vienna, Covance has also scrapped plans to build a massive facility in Prince William County, Va., meaning that thousands of animals will be spared years of loneliness, misery, and pain. Pop the champagne corks, folks! And let's hope that this trend involving the shuttering of animal laboratories continues into 2011.

Folks, this is HUGE: Last week, PETA filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as we released details of our lengthy undercover investigation of Professional Laboratory and Research Services, Inc. (PLRS). Today, we're thrilled to report that the North Carolina facility is closing and surrendering its more than 200 dogs and cats.

This victory means that these tormented animals will finally receive the veterinary care and loving homes that they deserve. It is a monumental victory for them and for PETA.

Never again will a worker at PLRS use pliers to yank teeth from a struggling dog who has been denied proper pain relief or get her kicks by trying to rip out a cat's claws. No longer will PLRS supervisors and employees ignore the deafening, desperate cries of animals like Clementine (aka"38902"), a sweet senior Dalmatian, or leave rabbits to suffer painful burns and sores in urine-soaked cages.

Urge Utah Animal Shelter to Stop Selling Dogs and Cats to Labs


A recent PETA undercover investigation revealed that the University of Utah purchases homeless dogs and cats from animal shelters for use in cruel and deadly experiments. As a result of our investigation and the resulting public outcry, Utah legislators voted overwhelmingly to amend its pound-seizure law to allow animal shelters the right to refuse to release animals to the university. The new law prompted the animal shelter that had been selling the most animals to the university to end the shameful practice and sever its ties with the University of Utah, which was also recently cited for nine violations of federal animal welfare laws after a PETA complaint.

Now, only one animal shelter in the entire state—the North Utah Valley Animal Shelter (NUVAS)—still betrays vulnerable animals by selling them to the school for experiments. Some of the dogs and cats sold by animal shelters to the university have holes drilled into their skulls, medical devices implanted in their necks, and hard plastic tubes repeatedly forced down their throats.

Help Stop Dogs From Being Sold for Experimentation

Most people view animal shelters as a safe haven for homeless animals looking for a second chance at a loving home. Tragically, many animals at North Utah Valley Animal Shelter (NUVAS) never get that opportunity.
PETA recently received 50 photos of dogsNUVAS sold to the University of Utah for use in cruel and deadly experiments. Some of the animals sold to the university have holes drilled into their skulls, their chests cut open and medical devices implanted onto their hearts, and hard plastic tubes repeatedly forced down their throats.
NUVAS is the only animal shelter in the state of Utah that continues to betray animals in its care by selling them for experimentation, and it's time for the shelter to stop this disgraceful practice of profiting at the expense of these dogs.

"Loves fetch and belly rubs. Sweet dog. Good for a family."

That's how Chance was described on his intake form at the North Utah Valley Animal Shelter (NUVAS).

But NUVAS did not place Chance with a loving family. PETA recently obtained his photo and those of 50 other dogs who were also sold by NUVAS to the University of Utah (the U) for use in deadly experiments.

Please send a gift to PETA to help us fight to expose the horrors of animal experimentation and free animals from cruel imprisonment.

We may never know what became of Chance. We do know that experimenters at the U cut holes into the chests and necks of dogs from NUVAS, implanted pacemakers into their hearts to induce irregular heartbeats, and then killed and dissected them. They also drilled holes into the skulls of cats from NUVAS and used others for training exercises in which they repeatedly forced hard plastic tubes down the cats' delicate throats.

Descriptions of all these animals were recorded on the shelter's intake forms. They were described as "very cute," "cuddly," "good with children," "housebroken," able to "sit and shake hands," etc. In other words, they have qualities that remind us of our own special companion animals.

PETA wants NUVAS to stop betraying the very animals it is charged with protecting. It is the only shelter in Utah that still engages in the shameful practice of selling animals for experimentation.

Our undercover investigation of the University of Utah and its abuse of dogs and cats led to a repeal of the mandatory pound-seizure law in that state. All the Utah pounds that were exposed by our investigation and that were revealed to be supplying the university have closed their doors to animal experimenters — except for NUVAS.

Of course, even if NUVAS changes its ways, millions of other animals in U.S. laboratories will still undergo painful experiments. Their heads will be sliced open, they'll be electrically shocked, and they'll be condemned to a lonely, frightening life in a cage.

Animals are not ours to experiment on.

PETA's work has helped end many cruel experiments, exposed violations of federal law, prompted the government to take back money from animal experimenters, closed the doors of animal shelters to laboratories, and provided funding that has led to the development, validation, and use of modern, effective non-animal tests. We have more scientists on staff than any other animal protection group, and they've convinced U.S. and international regulators to cancel tests that would have killed millions of animals.

We won't stop until we cut off the supply of animals to labs and succeed in mandating the use of humane methods in place of cruel animal tests. Please help us further our work by donating today.

Ask Your Congressperson to Help the Alamogordo Chimpanzees

I have troubling news—the almost 200 chimpanzees housed at the Alamogordo Primate Facility on Holloman Air Force Base are scheduled to be moved to a medical research facility where they can be used in painful, invasive experiments. Please ask your U.S. representative and Sen. Tom Udall to keep the chimpanzees in Alamogordo and support the creation of a sanctuary at the facility.

Since 2001, chimpanzees have been housed at Alamogordo Primate Facility (APF), where they cannot be used for research. Prior to this, many of these highly intelligent animals were used in space flight, HIV/AIDS, and hepatitis research for years or even decades. They deserve to be retired permanently to sanctuary, not used for more scientifically misguided research. However, the National Institutes of Health plans to move the chimpanzees—many of them atleast 40 years old—to the Southwest National Primate Research Facility in San Antonio, TX, so that they can be used in research.

The chimpanzees at APF need your help today. Please take a minute to e-mail your U.S. representative and Sen. Udall in order to keep these animals in Alamogordo and support the creation of a sanctuary at the facility.

Not only would keeping these chimpanzees at APF spare them immense suffering, it would also save jobs—almost 40 people work at APF. In this economic climate this doesn’t make sense.

Challenge cruel animal abuse on college campuses

Darla, a friendly cat with very expressive eyes, deserved to be adopted into a good home. Instead, she was sold by the North Utah Valley Animal Shelter to the University of Utah (the U) for $15. University faculty soon began tormenting her in archaic and painful intubation training exercises in which a hard plastic tube was repeatedly forced down her delicate windpipe; for decades, hundreds of other facilities have conducted such training by using humanlike simulators instead of animals.

The suffering endured by animals inside university laboratories is nothing short of heartbreaking. That's why PETA's dedicated staff spends countless hours scouring professional journals, reviewing records of animals abused in laboratories, tracking down grant recipients, and investigating local laws in an effort to find—and stop—abuses by campus experimenters across North America. Changing a university culture built on cruel and archaic experiments is not easy, but PETA is committed to doing all that we can to do just that.

A little more than a year ago, PETA discovered that experimenters at the University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW) were killing sheep in painful and deadly decompression experiments that were in direct violation of the state's Crimes Against Animals statute. When pressed by a Wisconsin animal rights group, the local district attorney even went so far as to acknowledge that these experiments, in which animals died in agony, violated the law—yet he refused to either stop the tests or prosecute those involved.

Rather than simply accepting the prosecutor's inaction and allowing more sheep to die excruciatingly painful deaths from the "bends," PETA and the local animal rights group immediately petitioned the circuit court in the region to prosecute the university under the laws that it had so clearly violated. Earlier this year, the court granted our petition and appointed a special prosecutor, who is right now determining whether nine people involved in these cruel experiments will face criminal and civil prosecution.

Universities like UW don't want people to know what happens to animals in campus laboratories—so we must do everything that we can to expose them. PETA is right now engaged in lawsuits against UW and the University of Maryland–Baltimorefor violating their respective states' public records laws by refusing to release documents related to animal experiments in their laboratories. EPA to Kill 80,000 Animals!


You read that right—the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) plans to test 134 chemicals in the first phase of a program that will take years to complete and result in the deaths of approximately 80,000 animals. Despite the high cost of this program, the results of these cruel tests will be difficult to interpret and practically useless in helping people or the environment.


What makes this plan even more absurd is the fact that the EPA has spent millions of dollars to create a non-animal testing program called ToxCastyet continues to choose to subject animals to painful and deadly tests. Killing animals in the name of "science" is cruel and never acceptable. Killing them in experiments even when there is a humane alternative is just barbaric.

Government Agency to Kill 80,000 Animals


The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has just released a list of 134 chemicals that will be tested for their potential to act as endocrine disruptors (ED). EDs are chemicals that interact with hormone systems and possibly affect the growth or reproduction of animals.

The EPA's program for screening these particular chemicals will take years and will kill approximately 80,000 animals. Since this program relies heavily on animal testing, it will provide information that is hard to interpret and is unlikely to help the EPA protect either humans or the environment from harmful chemicals.

The EPA has spent millions of dollars to create a large-scale non-animal testing program called ToxCast and has already used the program to profile the endocrine activity of more than 300 chemicals in the first phase of this program.

In addition, the EPA used ToxCast to study the health effects of the oil dispersants used in last summer's Gulf Coast oil spill, yet the review panel overseeing the EPA's endocrine program has so far refused to accept information from ToxCast. This is perplexing in light of the EPA's own confidence in the usefulness of the program. Rather than killing tens of thousands of animals, the EPA should take its own advice and use ToxCast to test the potential endocrine activity of these chemicals.

Please take a moment to write to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson to politely insist that the EPA use the non-animal ToxCast program to test the new list of chemicals for their potential to cause endocrine disruption.

Threat to the EU sales ban on animal-tested cosmetics - please take action today!

Have your say TODAY by contributing to a European Commission consultation which will inform the decision on whether or not the sales ban, scheduled for 2013, will be delayed. The consultation will close on 15th October, 2010.

As of March 2009, the EU Cosmetics Directive prohibits the testing of cosmetic ingredients on animals within the EU and also bans the sale of cosmetics within the EU if the product or its ingredients have been tested on animals elsewhere in the world. However, the sales ban allows a longer phase-out period for three types of toxicity tests. These remaining tests are scheduled to be banned for cosmetics sold within the EU from 2013 but this ban could now be delayed by years.

Until the full sales ban is in place, companies will simply conduct their animal testing in non-EU countries and continue selling their products within the EU.

FOUR PAWS is urging the Commission to support full implementation of the ban in 2013 without delay.

THREAT TO THE EU SALES BAN ON ANIMAL-TESTED COSMETICS

FOUR PAWS is urging the Commission to support full implementation of the ban in 2013 without delay. Any postponement would indicate complete disregard for public opinion and would destroy faith in EU decision makers’ promises. Animal suffering would continue for the frivolous purpose of developing new cosmetics.

As of March 2009, the EU Cosmetics Directive prohibits the testing of cosmetic ingredients on animals within the EU and also bans the sale of cosmetics within the EU if the product or its ingredients have been tested on animals elsewhere in the world. However, the sales ban allows a longer phase-out period for three types of toxicity test for which alternative non-animal methods are not yet available. These remaining tests are scheduled to be banned for cosmetics sold within the EU from 2013 but this ban could now be delayed by years.

Alternatives to these remaining three toxicity tests aren’t necessary for the ban to go ahead. There are already thousands of safe and effective cosmetic ingredients available and European citizens have made it very clear that they want to see an end to animal testing for the development of new versions of such trivial products as lipsticks and shampoo that cause such suffering and pain for animals in laboratories.

There are many thousands of existing ingredients approved for use in cosmetic products, but the drive by cosmetics companies to find ‘new and improved’ ingredients means that animals continue to be used to test new substances.

Number of animals used in cosmetics testing

Figures for 2005, published by the European Commission in 2007, show that over 5000 animals were used for testing cosmetics and toiletries in the EU (see Table 1). Although this represents a very small proportion (less than 1%) of the total number of animals used in experiments in the EU, the number of animals used in cosmetics testing has increased by 50% since the European Commission last published figures for 2002. Only two EU countries reported using animals in cosmetics testing, and the vast majority of cosmetics tests on animals are carried out in France.

Labelling of cosmetics
Many cosmetics companies label their products with misleading claims, such as:
• 'Against animal testing' – this does not necessarily mean that the product or its ingredients have not
been tested on animals;
• 'This product has not been tested on animals' – this does not necessarily mean that the ingredients
in the product have not been tested on animals;
• 'Our company does not test on animals' – this does not necessarily mean that the company’s
suppliers, another company or an associated company has not tested the product or its ingredients
on animals on the company's behalf, or that the company has not used ingredients that have
already been tested on animals;
• ‘Our company does not use ingredients tested on animals in the last five/ten years’ – unless there is
a fixed date to the claim (e.g. after 1995) this does not mean that the company will not continue to
new use ingredients that have been tested on animals after the stated number of years has elapsed
since the ingredient was tested;
• ‘Contains no animal ingredients’ or 'Contains natural ingredients' – this does not give any
information about the testing of the product or its ingredients.
For a company’s cosmetic products to be genuinely free of animal testing:
• The products and all of their ingredients must not be tested on animals after a fixed cut-off date;
• The company manufacturing the products must not originate, endorse or finance any form of testing
on animals, including the testing of products or ingredients by the company itself or through
contractors at any stage of development, production or marketing.
The legal situation
Several EU countries, including the UK, have banned the testing of cosmetics on animals but continue to
allow the sale of animal-tested cosmetic products and ingredients. Within the EU, the testing of cosmetics
is governed by Directive 76/768/EEC. In 2003, Directive 2003/15/EC introduced important amendments to
phase out the testing of cosmetic products and ingredients on animals within the EU and the sale of animaltested
cosmetic products and ingredients in the EU. The 2003 Directive introduced:
• A ban on animal testing of cosmetic products within the EU;
• Animal testing of cosmetic ingredients within the EU was phased out before 11 March 2009;
• A ban on the sale of cosmetics in the EU where the product or its ingredients have been tested on
animals once alternative non-animal tests have been validated – this ban must be fully implemented
by 11 March 2013 for three types of toxicity test (for which alternative methods were not yet under
consideration at the time of the Directive). All other tests have been phased out since 11 March
2009
These reforms are far reaching. The sales ban is particularly important to prevent companies simply
conducting animal testing in non-EU countries and then marketing the products in the EU. However, there
are still a number of concerns:
• Certain types of toxicity testing will still be permitted for cosmetic products and ingredients sold in
the EU until 2013 and if alternatives to replace those tests have not been developed and validated
by two years prior to the ban, the European Commission may propose new legislation to extend the
deadline;
• More resources need to be allocated to the development and validation of alternative methods to
ensure the sales ban is introduced on schedule;
• Even after the testing and sales bans are fully implemented, the Directive allows the European
Commission to grant permission for animal testing in exceptional circumstances where serious
concerns arise regarding the safety of an existing cosmetic ingredient which is in wide use and
cannot be replaced by an alternative ingredient;
• Non-EU countries which export cosmetic products to the EU may try to challenge the ban on the
sale of animal-tested cosmetic products and ingredients under the free trade rules of the World
Trade Organisation.
What you can do
• Join Four Paws and support our campaign to ensure that a complete EU ban on the production and
sale of animal-tested cosmetic products and ingredients is introduced on schedule;
• Write to cosmetics companies to ask about their policy on animal testing and ask them to sign up to
the Humane Cosmetics Standard;
• Write to your local newspaper and highlight the suffering caused by animal-testing of cosmetics or
ask your local radio station to cover the issue;
• Avoid buying cosmetics that have been tested on animals (including the ingredients) and encourage
friends and family to do the same – look out for the Humane Cosmetics Standard ‘Leaping Bunny’

A nine-month PETA undercover investigation found that hundreds of dogs, cats, and rabbits were subjected to vicious and abusive handling, neglect, and miserable living conditions at Professional Laboratory and Research Services, Inc. (PLRS)—a Corapeake, North Carolina-based contract laboratory that tested companion animal products such as flea and tick sprays and spot treatments on animals. Industry giants—including Bayer, Eli Lilly, Pfizer, Novartis, Schering-Plough (now Merck), Sergeant's, Wellmark, and Merial, the makers of Frontline flea and tick products—are among the corporations that have paid PLRS in the past to force-feed experimental compounds to dogs and cats and smear chemicals onto the animals' skin.

PETA's investigation revealed that dogs, cats, and rabbits used by PLRS suffered from untreated illnesses, injuries, and burns and that many animals were covered in sores because they couldn't escape the urine, bleach, and water that pooled in the facility's cages. Many animals at the facility frequently exhibited stress-induced abnormal behavior resulting from anxiety and boredom. Animals were often forced to sit in their own waste and many were sprayed with bleach and other harsh chemicals when the cages that they were being kept in were cleaned while the animals were still in them. A PLRS supervisor said that the untreated sores were "just part of ... life" at the facility.

PETA's investigator also documented that PLRS employees kicked, threw, grabbed, dropped, and dragged dogs; roughly grabbed and lifted rabbits by their ears; violently threw and slammed cats into cages; and viciously cursed at animals, calling them names such as "asshole," "bitch," and "motherfucker."

Animals at PLRS were used in cruel and painful tests. In one experiment that was conducted for a major corporation whose products are stocked on store shelves nationwide, a test chemical was applied to the necks of 57 cats. The cats exhibited severe adverse reactions that day, suffering seizures and bleeding from the nose and mouth. In spite of the extreme and obvious reactions, the cats were exposed to the chemical for a second time that very same day. Rabbits at PLRS were intentionally and repeatedly forced to "wear" a tightly wrapped capsule containing thousands of ticks and were then killed.

While PLRS has closed its doors and has surrendered its animals—thanks in large part to your e-mails, letters, phone calls, and support of PETA—countless others are still being used by other laboratories in the development and testing of companion animal products. Veterinary care was essentially non-existent at PLRS. Dogs who suffered from bloody diarrhea, hair loss, or worms were not treated—and little or nothing was done to prevent the spread of infection to other animals. Cats suffered from conjunctivitis—a highly contagious eye infection—and ear mites, and sloppy cleaning practices encouraged further disease transmission.

Animals at PLRS were used in cruel and painful tests. In one experiment that was conducted for a major company whose flea-control products are stocked on store shelves nationwide, a test chemical was applied to the necks of 57 cats. Even though the cats exhibited severe adverse reactions that day (some suffered seizures and bleeding from the nose and mouth), the animals continued to be subjected to the toxic drug. Rabbits at PLRS were forcibly held over thousands of mosquitoes in order to feed and breed the insects and were intentionally and repeatedly subjected to infestations of thousands of ticks before being killed.

In 2009 the European Union outlawed all animal testing for cosmetics within its borders. This same law also provides for an EU-wide ban on the sale of cosmetics that have been animal tested elsewhere in the world, beginning in 2013. For companies, this has meant choosing between having their products pulled off the shelves in Europe (the largest global market for cosmetics) or kicking their animal testing habit.

However, Humane Society International has just learned that European bureaucrats are considering introducing legislation that could delay the long-awaited sales ban—perhaps by years.
We need to act quickly and remind EU decision makers that caring consumers around the world expect shop shelves to be cruelty-free, and they have a moral obligation to uphold the 2013 sales ban.

The Desired Outcome of this Petition:
Strong action to enforce a Europe-wide ban on the sale of animal tested cosmetics, which will give companies around the world a strong incentive to turn their backs on animal testing once and for all

Lapins élevés en cage élevés pour réaliser des expérimentations.Le lapin intéresse depuis bien longtemps les scientifiques comme modèle animal. Ainsi, dès le XVIIe siècle, des lapins sont utilisés en ophtalmologie, puis comme modèle d’investigation pour les études pharmacologiques de transfert placentaire de médicaments, métabolites et stéroïdes, sa placentation étant similaire à celle de la femme. Cet animal présente notamment les avantages d'être prolifique, de petite taille et de pouvoir être élevé dans des conditions bien maîtrisées, conditions indispensables pour en faire un animal de laboratoire. Les trois races préférentiellement utilisés par les scientifiques sont le néo-zélandais, le hollandais et le bélier. Du fait de sa bonne réponse immunologique, il peut permettre la production d'anticorps spécifiques. Il est également utilisé actuellement dans les domaines cardiovasculaires, ostéo-articulaires et respiratoires, ainsi qu'en oncologie et diabétologie. C'est un modèle en approprié pour étudier l'hypertension et l'athérosclérose, bien que la souris le remplace de plus en plus dans ce secteur. Il est adéquat pour étudier l'arthrose et pour valider les nouvelles technologies d’imagerie ostéo-articulaire[31]. La lapine a également longtemps été utilisée comme diagnostic précoce de grossesse chez la femme. En effet, les hormones particulières à la femme enceinte et présentes dans ses urines (des dérivés de la progestérone) provoquent la reprise d'activité de l'ovaire de la lapine qui se les voit injecter par intraveineuse[32].

Un lapin a été pour la première fois cloné à partir de cellules adultes en 2002, performance qui a par la suite été réitérée à plusieurs reprises. Les diverses mutations que l'on rencontre dans certaines souches offrent des opportunités pour réaliser des études génétiques. Par ailleurs, on considère généralement que le lapin est plus représentatif des mammifères que la souris pour étudier le développement embryonnaire précoce, et notamment la période d'activation transcriptionnelle du génome et la gastrulation. Enfin, sa domestication tardive en fait une espèce idéale pour étudier le processus de domestication et les processus génétiques associés[33].

Dans le monde, ce sont environ 1,5 million de lapins qui sont utilisés comme animaux de laboratoire en 1995, ce qui reste une valeur modeste en comparaison de ceux d'autres animaux utilisés pour les mêmes fins. Les pays les plus concernés sont l'Allemagne et les États-Unis qui élèvent chacun 300 000 lapins de laboratoire. On peut d'ailleurs noter qu'aux États-Unis un élevage à vocation commerciale sur quatre est destiné à la production de lapins pour des laboratoires. Le Japon, et dans une moindre mesure les autres pays d'Europe de l'ouest, le Canada ainsi que la Chine et la Corée du Sud utilisent également des lapins comme modèles d'expérimentations. L'opinion publique n'approuve pas toujours ces expérimentations, et des mouvements se développent pour s'y opposer au Royaume-Uni et aux États-Unis, comme le Human against rabbit exploitation (HARE)
