URGENT: Help us save animals from painful and deadly tests

While PETA's eye-opening demonstrations and celebrity supporters may make headlines, often it's the hard work that goes on away from the media spotlight that is responsible for our most groundbreaking victories for animals in laboratories. Today, I want to share with you one of the ways we're working to save guinea pigs, mice and other animals from suffering and dying in painful animal tests. Skin sensitisation testing is a requirement in the EU for chemicals, drugs and other products that may come into contact with the skin. Nearly 40,000 animals a year in the EU have patches of their fur shaved off and concentrated chemicals injected into their tiny bodies. This cruel procedure can cause searing pain to the animals' bare skin and lead to agonising inflammation and a massive allergic reaction.

With the help of independent expert scientists, PETA and PETA US have worked to identify a number of non-animal methods that could eventually replace this painful test. One promising method is the use of already available reconstructed human skin models, currently used to test for skin irritation. The effectiveness of this test – which doesn't involve hurting animals and has the potential to cost only half as much for researchers to perform as the horrific animal method – has been proved in the laboratory. Will you strengthen PETA's work to promote non-animal test methods and our fight for all animals by making a donation online today? PETA is currently working with the scientists who developed the method to prepare this human skin model test for validation – the critical process of scientific testing that is a pre-requisite of acceptance by regulatory authorities. Should the EU and other regulators approve this method for use in currently required tests, it could spare the lives of hundreds of thousands of mice and guinea pigs around the globe each year. Skin sensitisation tests are still permitted under the EU Cosmetics Directive but are due to be banned in 2013. Because of this, there is great commercial demand for an accepted non-animal alternative, particularly amongst cosmetics manufacturers worldwide that want to sell their products in the EU following the ban. However, claims that tests like the one PETA is supporting won't be ready to replace animal tests threaten the 2013 ban and may lead to it being postponed, possibly even indefinitely. Any delay will cost countless animals their lives, so it is vital that work to develop and validate alternatives is supported right now.

Save animals from cruel tests

PETA is a leader in promoting the use of existing non-animal methods.In February, PETA released a free resource for chemical companies that provided critical information about the use of computational modelling to reduce animal testing. This approach can already replace many animal tests, but conversations between PETA experts and product company representatives revealed that corporate executives felt cautious about switching even though regulators have endorsed the method. PETA's free guide was compiled with the assistance of PETA US as well as academic and industry experts, and it is helping corporate decision-makers move away from cruel tests. Our efforts to support the development of new non-animal methods such as alternatives to the painful skin sensitisation testing required by some regulatory agencies may spare thousands of animals both in the UK and around the world. But with as many as 150 million animals being tested on and killed every year worldwide, there is still much work to be done. Poisoned and killed for cosmetics!

Whether it happens at a cosmetics company or inside a secretive contract laboratory somewhere in the world, cosmetics testing on animals is tragic. It's an industry in which evaluating a new formulation of a skin cream is more important than the suffering of hundreds of animals and in which painful and archaic tests claim the lives of thousands for little more reason than improving a product's market share.
Unfortunately, if industry lobbyists have their way, a ban that would remove animal-tested cosmetics from store shelves may soon be overturned, opening the door for thousands of rabbits, mice and other animals to be killed in cosmetics tests.
Please help animals like them before it's too late.

Cosmetics tests are hell for the thousands of animals confined to cages in laboratories. Pregnant animals are force-fed chemical ingredients to see if they cause deformities in their babies, and chronic tests involve feeding animals chemicals over months – or even years – causing pain, seizures, paralysis and death. All this misery is for something as insignificant as hair dye or mascara.
Less than a decade ago, PETA helped win a major victory for animals when the European Union agreed to ban all animal tests for cosmetics within the EU by March 2009 and to ban EU sales of all cosmetics tested on animals anywhere in the world by March 2013.

But now the European Commission is considering delaying the last stage of the ban, perhaps even indefinitely. If the delay is proposed, members of the European Parliament and governments of all EU member states will still have to agree to it, but the consequences of losing that vote following pressure from massive cosmetics companies would be disastrous for animals. We must not let industry forces reverse the ban on the sale of animal-tested cosmetics!
Delaying the ban would mean that huge cosmetics companies like L'Oréal and Procter & Gamble would still be permitted to test ingredients on many thousands of individual animals outside Europe for products sold within Europe. Animal testing for cosmetics currently takes place in countries such as the US, where rats and mice basically have no legal protections, and China, where animal welfare standards are lower still.

Animals in laboratori​es need your support

As you read this, dogs, cats, rabbits, mice and even monkeys – as well as many other animals – are suffering behind closed laboratory doors. Some of these animals may be force-fed cosmetics and household cleaners or forced to inhale toxic chemicals. Some will be made to suffer from painful heart attacks, be injected with cells that grow massive tumours or have holes drilled into their skulls so that electrodes can be inserted into their brains.

There is no rationale for these painful tests beyond the "we've always done it this way" excuse that experimenters use to justify their cruelty to animals – a rationale that becomes even more flimsy when one realises that non-animal testing methods are not only cruelty-free but also often cheaper and more effective at predicting results in humans.

Every working day, PETA's dedicated scientific, policy and campaign experts pursue every possible opportunity to cut the staggering death toll of REACH. With so many animal lives at risk in every laboratory and with so many vital measures to prevent painful animal experiments in testing programmes like REACH going unenforced or ignored, it's up to PETA, through the renewed support of donors like you, to help these animals.

The U.S. Army responded to months of intense campaigning by PETA and thousands of supporters like you and ended painful training exercises in which monkeys poisoned with a drug overdose that makes them suffer from violent seizures.

URGENT: Tell Air France to Stop Monkey Shipment to US Laboratori​es


This Wednesday (1 February), Air France is planning to transport a shipment of 60 live monkeys from Africa to the United States to be used in cruel and deadly experiments. Please contact Air France officials to demand that they cancel the shipment and spare the monkeys.
The monkeys will be shipped in tiny wooden crates from an African breeding facility to Paris. They will then be flown to Chicago and transported by truck to their final destination, the notorious Shin Nippon Biomedical Laboratories (SNBL). Last December, PETA US exposed the suffering of monkeys inside SNBL. Sick and distraught animals were suffering horribly after being subjected to tests in which they were injected with experimental chemicals. Physically and psychologically abused, they were deprived of veterinary care and left to suffer from untreated wounds.
Even though almost every major airline in the world refuses to take part in the transportation of primates for vivisection, Air France continues to profit from this violent industry. There is still a chance to stop the monkeys Air France is planning to transport this week from ever facing the terrors of the flight and the torment of the lab. Please take action immediately and write to Air France officialsdemanding that they cancel this shipment and ban all future transportation of monkeys for vivisection. Then please contact your friends and family and ask them to do the same.

Imprisoned, Poisoned and Killed: the Suffering of Monkeys in Labs Exposed

The Daily Mail yesterday carried the sickening and sad story of a PETA US exposé of a major laboratory in Washington state that experiments on monkeys. A distraught employee of Shin Nippon Biomedical Laboratories contacted PETA US to report the suffering of monkeys used in the tests that the business performs on contract for drug and chemical companies. The Mail article paints a horrifying picture of monkeys shivering with cold because of the freezing liquids dripped into their veins, screaming and shaking while having blood taken and being tormented and terrified by the staff. Shin Nippon already has a history of causing animals to suffer, including the horrific incident in 2008 in which a monkey was boiled to death after her cage was put through a high-pressure washer while she was still inside it. PETA US has submitted a detailed complaint of the most recent incidents to the authorities, and we’ll keep you informed about any developments. Could it happen here? It almost certainly already does. Monkeys are used in the same kinds of tests here in the UK, and while our laws are stricter than in the US in some ways, undercover investigations have found evidence of neglect, abuse and terrible suffering right here. More worrying yet, the government is considering relaxing the rules on laboratory inspections, bringing us even closer to the US situation. Please contact the government urgently to tell them how unacceptable that would be. Many monkeys are imported into labs in the US and UK. Please also support PETA US’ campaign to persuade airlines not to transport monkeys for vivisection.

.Ricky Gervais is back supporting the animal rights scene with a new cause, PSA, and passionate plea for support.

The 50-year-old comedian and animal activist is helping to launch a global campaign against cosmetic testing on animals in partnership with a new organization called Cruelty Free International.

“I am delighted to support the launch of Cruelty Free International, the exciting global campaign to end the use of animals in product testing,” he said in a statement. “Animal testing for cosmetics is still allowed in most of the world. That means thousands of animals can continue to die for the sake of a new shampoo. We urgently need a worldwide ban on this cruel and unnecessary suffering.”

Created by the long-standing animal rights organization BUAV, Cruelty Free International will work with governments, regulators, companies and other orgs to push for a worldwide ban on animal testing for cosmetics; something 80% of the global community still allows.

“We are delighted to receive the backing of Ricky Gervais for this exciting and dynamic organisation,” CFI Chief Executive, Michelle Thew said. “The time has come for a concerted effort to finally end animal testing for cosmetics worldwide. Cruelty Free International will lead this global effort.”

Gervais’s involvement is this campaign comes in the wake of an already busy activist year for the actor. Earlier, he was instrumental in helping to shut down a breeding farm for laboratory beagles, as well as campaigning heavily through social media and in the media against bear bile farms in China.

“I’ve never understood cruelty to animals,” he told Metro recently. “It’s one of the things that makes my blood boil. I do anything to do with cancer – my mother died of lung cancer – and animals, because I’ve always loved animals. When I was eight or nine, I hated wildlife documentaries where the lion got the antelope. I’ve always been conscious of animals being in pain. I say, if in doubt, assume the animal doesn’t enjoy being tortured.”

World Week for Animals in Laboratories - Recap 2012
IDA's 25th annual World Week for Animals in Laboratories (WWAIL) was held from April 21 - 29 2012. We had a great turnout this year, with dozens of events in France, Canada, and numerous U.S. cities. Events included massive protests and were covered by radio, TV, and print media.

This year IDA printed an important new flyer asking people to take action and support the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act that would essentially end all experimentation of chimpanzees in the U.S. We made it our goal to get this flyer into as many people's hands as possible and our volunteers did an awesome job handing out hundreds of flyers that encouraged people to take action and contact their representative asking them to support this precedent-setting bill.

But how do these experiments get funded? A fundamentally broken NIH funding system that has: (click links)

Resulted in a glut of researchers and scientific misbehaviors as fierce competition for funds increases;

Called into question in a March 29, 2012 scientific expose in the journal Nature the reliability of highly-prestigious, highly-cited preclinical research;

Been blasted by past NIH Directors, thousands of NIH-funded researchers and eminent scientists as preventing innovative, risk-taking research;

Spawned predoctoral grants in which taxpayers help fund "underrepresented" researchers' obtaining Ph.D.'s by experimenting on animals, thus breeding the next generation of animal experimenters;

Created institutional training grants that have the potential for breeding even more new animal experimenters;

Funded so-called "breakthrough" grants that instead of revolutionizing science, continue the status quo;

Funded the National Primate Research Center System to the tune of $1.5 billion over the past 20 years simply to keep the Centers open (half of the Top 10 List contains experiments conducted or supported by these Primate Centers)

Made a mockery of the 3R's (Reduction, Refinement, Replacement of animals) as well as the 1993 NIH Revitalization Act with mandated that NIH fund non-animal methods of research

Compelled IDA to request that Congress re-open and expand its investigation of the NIH's management and oversight of billions of dollars in taxpayer-funded grants.



10) DRUG-INDUCED ARTHRITIS IN RATS MAKES EXERCISE HARDER

In an elaborate study of the obvious, University of New England researchers injected rats’ knees with a substance that causes arthritis and then discovered that those rats would run less on their exercise wheels due to chronic pain. As a sad side note, the arthritis seemed to have a larger debilitating effect on those rats that had run more often.

Why did researchers ruin the best part of these animals' miserable lives to discover something we already know? They did it in an attempt to create yet another "animal model" of chronic pain in humans, even though they should know that animals of different species – and even different strains of the same species – can react differently to the same diseases and drugs.

This study was funded by an "R15" grant from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. R15 grants are meant for institutions that have not been major recipients of NIH support. One of the aims of an R15 grant is to "expose students to research." Consequently, like F31 and T32 grants, R15 grants can breed the next generation of animal experimenters.

9) RATS WHO RUN AROUND MORE APPEAR TO BE MORE ANXIOUS

Experimenters at Florida State University put rats in an open space with nowhere to hide – a stressful situation for a rodent – and identified which ones ran around more than the others. Then, they psychologically traumatized some of them by putting them in a cage with a bigger, more aggressive rat to be manhandled, either once or on several consecutive days. Some male rats who were attacked and defeated by more aggressive males became socially withdrawn and appeared to experience less pleasure than other rats.

So what did these experimenters find out about these defeatist rats? These were the rats who were more active in an open space and were more anxious about being beaten up by another rat, even when that had only happened on one prior occasion. In other words, some rats are just naturally more anxious.

This study was funded by two grants from the National Institute of Mental Health. One of these grants was an R21 grant. The scope for an R21 grant are "novel studies that break new ground," "High risk high reward studies that may lead to a breakthrough" or "result in novel techniques, agents, methodologies, models or applications that will impact biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research." If this is NIH's idea of "breakthrough" or "high risk high reward" science, one can only imagine what its "normal" science looks like.

PRAIRIE VOLES STUDY SUGGESTS SINGLE MOMS RAISE LESS LOVING CHILDREN

Rather than addressing the real issue, Emory University experimenters created "single-mother" prairie vole families by removing the father from some prairie vole families. While they found that the single mothers spent just as much time caring for their children as the mothers with mates, they did find that the children of single mothers spent less time caring for their children than those raised by two parents.

Isn't it a little offensive to suggest that studying prairie voles is "a fast, easy, and ethologically relevant way of studying human-relevant family dynamics" without giving any evidence that these same results have been found in humans?

This study was supported by four separate NIH grants. Believe it or not, one of them was the Yerkes "Primate Research Center Grant," now in its 52nd year of taxpayer funding.

This study on prairie voles was also funded by a T32 institutional training grant from the National Institute of Mental Health that focuses largely on training nine predoctoral fellows in basic science, including various "animal models," does not provide clinical training, and includes participating faculty from the Yerkes National Primate Research Center.

Two other grants from the National Institute of Mental Health also supported this study.

7) DIETING HAMSTERS CHOOSE FOOD OVER SEX

Scientists at Lehigh University and the University of Minnesota found that putting hamsters on a diet had no significant impact on their abilities to perform or enjoy sexual intercourse, although they appeared less motivated to initiate it. Female hamsters who had been fed 75 percent of what they would normally eat for 8-11 days tended to spend more time with food and less time with male hamsters when given a choice between them. They also hoarded more food – big surprise.

This study was supported by three NIH grants; two from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and one from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

One of the NIDA grants was an F31 grant, meant to provide research training to predoctoral students "leading toward the research degree (e.g., Ph.D.)." In this case, the predoctoral student received her taxpayer-assisted Ph.D. in 2011 from the University of Minnesota and is currently a post-doctoral research associate there. In March 2012, she gave presentations to a Minnesota high school district Career Day and the University of Minnesota's Biological Sciences Club.

In another example of an F31 grant breeding the next generation of animal experimenters, a recipient of an F31 obtained her taxpayer-assisted Ph.D. from Oregon Health & Science University in 2011. One of the papers supported by this grant, published in 2011, involved exposing pregnant mice to methamphetamine to see its effects on their offspring’s cognition in adolescence. This F31 awardee is now an Assistant Professor of Psychology at a different university, where she plans to expand these neonatal methamphetamine exposure experiments in pregnant mice to other drugs of abuse in this "rodent model." She can also teach and mentor another generation of animal experimenters in her position as an Assistant Professor of Psychology.

Of the 1,232 F31 predoctoral grants funded by NIH in Fiscal Year 2011, 47 percent (574) involved experiments on rats, mice or nonhuman primates.

6) RAT BITTER-TASTE NERVES APPEAR TO WORK

Inspired by the incredible variety in bitter substances, Ohio State University experimenters decided to see what would happen if they cut a couple of the nerves that connect taste buds to the brain. The experimenters slit the throats of ten rats so that one nerve could be cut and punctured the eardrums of ten other rats so that the other nerve could be severed. The experimenters performed both procedures on the ten unluckiest rats. The ten "luckiest" rats just had their throats slit and their eardrums punctured, with the experimenters leaving their "bitter taste" nerves intact. How merciful.

What did these experimenters learn? The nerve that was more sensitive to bitter stimuli was also more important in learning to avoid bitter stimuli – go figure.

This study was supported by two grants from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communications Disorders, one of which is currently in its 22nd year of funding.

5) CONTAGIOUS YAWNING IN CHIMPANZEES IS EMPATHETIC

When a famous primatologist and a prodigious upstart at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center get a paper published on contagious yawning in chimpanzees, well, you just can't help but yawn too. That is, before the outrage might kick in. Taxpayers paid for a substantial "Career Development" grant to support this – and all we got was a lousy experiment suggesting that empathy makes chimpanzees more likely to catch a yawn from familiar chimpanzees than strangers.

Wondering if these researchers caught contagious yawns from the chimpanzees too? Given that they go to work at a place where our fellow primates are imprisoned and tortured on a daily basis, probably not. It's even less likely given that Frans DeWaal is co-author; despite his repeatedly finding that chimpanzee behavior and society is so close to humans, he has refused to speak out against the invasive and lethal experiments his own institution has conducted on chimpanzees. Perhaps Dr. DeWaal could take a cue from the chimpanzees and develop some empathy.

This experiment was funded by both a "K12" career development grant awarded to Emory University Yerkes Primate Research Center Grant, which is currently in its 52nd year of taxpayer funding.

4) ALLIGATORS' SOUNDS AND ANATOMY DIFFER FROM HUMANS'

Scientists at the University of Utah implanted pressure sensors in the tracheas of young alligators and ran a cable through their throats, fixing it to their upper jaws "with several layers of duct tape," in order to describe their vocal behavior. The scientists found that alligators have only two ways of changing the frequency of their voices, whereas mammals have three.

One of the two NIH grants that supported this study was awarded for the development of an airway simulator that could be used by doctors to describe and diagnose various diseases that affect breathing. Our suggestion? Start studying human anatomy and leave the alligators alone.

This study was supported by two grants from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

3) LEMON-FRESH SCENT CAN INDUCE ERECTIONS IN MONKEYS

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center, Merck Research Laboratories and Northeastern University, Boston, demonstrated that male marmoset monkeys can be conditioned to associate an arbitrary odor – in this case, lemon – with sexual experience. After conditioning, the odor of lemon caused male marmosets to become sexually aroused, even in the absence of a female marmoset.

In order to rationalize their experiment, the researchers stated that sexual conditioning had been conducted in a wide range of animals, including fish, birds, rodents, stallions, and humans – but it had never been done before in nonhuman primates. A true breakthrough.

This study was funded by two grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Primate Research Center Grant, which is now in its 51st year of taxpayer funding.

2) RATS FIND MILES DAVIS IS BETTER WITH COCAINE

Inquiring minds at Albany Medical College played music to a group of unsophisticated rats, who preferred Beethoven's "Fur Elise" over Miles Davis's "Four" and preferred silence over any music at all. When they sweetened the deal by adding cocaine to their least preferred options, however, they found that rats would reverse their preferences, even choosing jazz over classical.

In another study published in 2011, the same experimenters supported by the same NIH grants again used Miles Davis" "Four," but this time exposed rats to methamphetamine to determine the drug's effects on rats' learned conditioning.

These studies were supported by two grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. One of the grants was a T32 institutional training grant regarding the pharmacology and neuroscience of drug abuse. At least six pre- and post-doctoral fellows, who could become members of the next generation of animal experimenters, have been trained and supported with this grant.

1) LABS ARE STRESSFUL PLACES FOR MONKEYS

Here's a question that really deserves a published study: how many taxpayer-funded NIH grants does it take to "find" what has been known for many decades? Seven.

Researchers at Tulane National Primate Research Center recently acknowledged that daily uncontrollable stress is a basic part of an animal's life in a laboratory, regardless even of which experiments are performed on them. In their words: "It is widely accepted that procedures that are performed as part of routine husbandry have the potential to affect both physiological and behavioral parameters that are associated with stress."

Unsurprisingly, rhesus monkeys showed "abnormal behaviors," stereotypies like rocking or pacing back and forth, while watching another monkey be physically restrained and injected with anesthetic, and they exhibited these abnormal behaviors less when they were sharing a cage with another monkey.

What is surprising is that "there is widespread hesitance to pair-house adult male rhesus macaques," despite the evidence that it is better for primates on the whole than social isolation. What is perhaps more surprising – and disturbing – is that in this day and age, experimenters continue to waste precious tax dollars on studies "finding" what has been known for many decades: that monkeys are highly social and intelligent animals who are greatly harmed by social isolation and seeing their friends suffering.

This study was supported multiple NIH grants. Believe it or not, it was funded by two National Primate Research Center Grants: the one awarded to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, now in its 51st year of taxpayer funding, and Tulane University's, which is also now in its 51st year of taxpayer funding.

This study was also supported by a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health, as well as four additional grants from the National Center for Research Resources.

Urge Congress To Re-Open Investigation Of NIH!

With a budget of $32 billion, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the world's largest funder of biomedical research. But the agency continues to fund wasteful and ridiculous animal experiments which have nothing to do with its stated mission "to extend healthy life and reduce the burdens of illness and disability."

Please help reform the broken NIH funding system and end decades of repetitive animal research by asking the Chair of the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, Rep. Cliff Stearns (FL), to re-open the subcommittee's investigation of the NIH.

In 2003, the House Committee on Energy and Commerce launched an investigation of the NIH's management and oversight of billions of dollars in taxpayer-funded grants. The Committee cited the oversight questions raised by the doubling of the NIH's budget over a period of five years as well as the agency's continuing to fund the now-defunct Coulston Foundation despite that lab's multiple violations of federal law.

Since 2003, the situation at NIH has notably deteriorated, as thousands of NIH-funded researchers, eminent scientists and past NIH Directors have blasted the system:

- Thousands of NIH-funded researchers have criticized the NIH peer-review system as an unfair "old boys' network" that favors those who know how to game the system;

- Thousands of NIH-funded researchers have reported engaging in a shockingly high percentage of scientific misbehaviors, ranging from falsifying data to using inadequate research designs to using funds from one project to get another done to cutting corners to complete a project;

- A former NIH Director and the editor of the prestigious journal Science have blasted the peer review funding system as an "obstacle" to "transformative research," a "wasted opportunity" that forces researchers who want to get funding to "avoid risk-taking and innovation" because of the conservatism of the peer-review process, resulting in research that "has little chance of producing the breakthroughs needed to improve human health";

- A scientist who has studied the NIH peer review system has stated that "Unhealthy competition...creates its own problems, most notably research misconduct and lower-quality, less innovative research";

- On March 29, 2012, researchers dropped a bombshell in the prestigious journal Nature, stating that an astonishing 89 percent of landmark, highly cited preclinical cancer studies could not be replicated, calling into question not only the reliability of cancer experiments - and other experiments - but also the entire research enterprise. As one scientist told the National Academy of Sciences on March 27, 2012, fierce competition leads to poor science, even fraud, as too many researchers compete for funds.

In today's exigent economic climate, as Congress looks to cut wasteful spending while Americans still fight the Great Recession, the need to re-open and widen this investigation is greater than ever. The NIH's broken funding system has not produced the cures it promises, it has instead created careerist researchers and institutionalized shoddy science, as highlighted by the In Defense of Animals campaign, "Real Ridiculous Research," which has made more information available at http://idausa.org/rrr.

We urge you to investigate the NIH and make the much-needed changes that will help untold thousands of ill human patients, millions of animals in labs, and American taxpayers who do not want their hard-earned tax dollars wasted.

Disturbing Photos Leaked From Laboratory

Where do laboratory workers turn when their repeated pleas to supervisors to stop the abuse of animals in the company's laboratory are ignored? They turn to PETA. A distraught whistleblowerfrom Shin Nippon Biomedical Laboratories (SNBL), a notorious Everett, Washington-based animal testing conglomerate, recently contacted PETA to reveal shocking allegations of mistreatment of animals used in painful and lethal experiments.

The whistleblower shared photos and videostaken inside SNBL showing sick, traumatized monkeys suffering horribly from tests in which they were injected with experimental chemicals. Monkeys tethered to their cages shivered uncontrollably as an ice-cold solution was continuously dripped into their veins. Other monkeys endured the pain of severely bruised arms, swollen eyes, and broken fingers and tails, resulting from violent and sometimes sadistic handling by callous workers. PETA has filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture urging it to investigate these disturbing allegations and issue fines for any violations that it uncovers.

In addition to conducting cruel tests on dogs, monkeys, mice, rabbits, and other animals, SNBL also imports thousands of monkeys each year into the U.S.—for its own use and to sell to other laboratories. These monkeys are transported to the U.S. in the dark and terrifying cargo holds of planes, often on passenger flights just below unsuspecting customers. While most major airlines refuse to take part in the violent primate trade, an increasingly small group of airlines continues to profit from animals' misery by transporting monkeys destined for U.S. laboratories. Please take a few moments now to urge airlines that still transport monkeys to U.S. laboratories, including SNBL, to adopt a formal policy against the transportation of nonhuman primates for use in experiments.

Ask Airlines to Stop Shipping Monkeys to Be Tortured

During a past shipment, terrified monkeys destined for SNBL peer out from their wooden transport crates. Every year, tens of thousands of nonhuman primates are transported from countries such as China, Mauritius, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Indonesia to the U.S. to be imprisoned in laboratories and tormented in experiments. Some are bred in captivity on cramped, squalid monkey factory farms, while others are stolen from their families in the wild. The traumatized monkeys are crammed into small wooden crates and transported in the backs of trucks and the dark and terrifying cargo holds of planes, often on passenger flights just below unsuspecting customers.

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, nearly 23,000 nonhuman primates were brought into the U.S. in 2010—nearly all of them destined for laboratories. Nearly 3,000 monkeys were imported by animal testing conglomerate Shin Nippon Biomedical Laboratories (SNBL), where recent photos and video footage leaked by a whistleblower show sick, distraught monkeys suffering horribly from tests in which they were injected with experimental chemicals.

Almost every major airline in the world—including Delta Air Lines, Qantas, American Airlines, British Airways, Aer Lingus, Cathay Pacific, and dozens of others—refuses to take any part in this violent industry and prohibits the transportation of primates to laboratories. However, an increasingly small group of airlines—including Air China, Air France, China Eastern Airlines, United Airlines, Philippine Airlines, and Vietnam Airlines—continues to profit from animals' misery by transporting monkeys destined for U.S. laboratories. Please be a voice for the monkeys who are suffering in the primate trade. Take a minute of your time now to urge airlines that still transport monkeys to U.S. laboratories to join their peers and adopt a formal policy against the transportation of nonhuman primates for use in experiments.



I was dismayed to learn that your airline continues to facilitate cruelty to animals by transporting primates destined for laboratories. These highly social, intelligent beings are routinely mutilated, poisoned, deprived of food and water, forcibly immobilized in restraint devices, infected with painful and deadly diseases, and psychologically tormented.

Additionally, primates suffer from the long and grueling transport in the cargo holds of planes and in the backs of trucks. For these reasons, nearly every major airline including Cathay Pacific, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and Aer Lingus refuses to transport primates for use in experiments. It is shameful that your airline lags behind and continues to support this cruel practice. Please join leading airline companies and adopt a formal policy prohibiting the transport of primates destined for laboratories to ensure that your company plays no role in the suffering of these animals

An insider from pharmaceutical giant Bristol-Myers Squibb recently approached PETA with disturbing allegations about animals who suffered painful and gruesome deaths through negligence. The whistleblower reported that a monkey and a rat had been scalded to death when the cages in which they were each housed were carelessly put into the company's mechanical high-temperature, high-pressure cage washer—with the animals still inside. In a separate incident, the whistleblower reports that several monkeys were tethered to their cage doors to be weighed and then left unattended. When workers returned to the room, they found that one of the monkeys had strangled to death.

In addition to these allegations of blatant neglect, from 2008 to 2010, Bristol-Myers Squibb tormented more than 20,000 animals in its laboratories, including more than 2,600 dogs and 3,400 primates who were imprisoned in cages, intentionally poisoned to death, and subjected to other painful and stressful procedures. Astonishingly, these numbers do not even include the thousands of mice, rats, and other animals who are not covered under the Animal Welfare Act, and they do not include animals used in experiments contracted out by Bristol-Myers Squibb to other laboratories, such as the notorious Covance. Bristol-Myers Squibb has long been on PETA's radar, and we have submitted a shareholder resolution this year to urge the company to be more transparent and to minimize its use of animals by implementing modern, non-animal testing methods—recommended by the National Academy of Sciences.

Take a Stand Against Nestea's CruelTEA



Rats similar to this one have suffered in Nestea's painful CruelTEA tests.

Dying for a glass of iced tea? The animals tormented in Nestea's deadly tea experiments are.

Experimenters injected mice with toxic chemicals to give them diabetes and then force-fed them tea ingredients before killing them. In another experiment, mice were force-fed tea extracts and then had their leg muscles cut open before they were decapitated. The maker of Nestea also funded an experiment in which brain-damaged and rapidly aging mice were locked in dark chambers and given painful shocks to their extraordinarily sensitive feet before being killed. Even though the tests are not required by law, Nestea causes animals to suffer and die simply so that the company can investigate the possible health benefits of tea products.

After thousands of e-mails, hundreds of phone calls, and a PETA "monkey" paying a visit to China Southern Airlines' L.A. office, the airline—which is the largest in China—has made the compassionate decision to cancel its plans to ship 80 monkeys from China to the U.S., where they were going to end up in the hands of Shin Nippon Biomedical Laboratories (SNBL) and Harlan Laboratories and be tormented in cruel experiments.

Now, we're urging China Southern Airlines officials to join with many other major airlines, including Delta, American, United, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic, and refuse to transport primates to laboratories ever again. You can also write to them here. We'll keep you posted!

American Airlines Won't Fly Monkeys to Labs ..

The skies just got friendlier for primates of the nonhuman variety. American Airlines has publicly confirmed that it will no longer transport nonhuman primates to be used in experiments. In adding cruelty to its no-fly list, American Airlines joins British Airways, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Qantas, Delta Air Lines, Air China, Monarch Air Group, Amerijet, IBC Airways, and several other airlines in refusing to transport primates to facilities where they will be tormented and killed in experiments.

You may also recall that Lufthansa airlines agreed last year to stop transporting dogs and cats to laboratories after a PETA action alert generated an enormous response from concerned people.

You can help stop laboratory abuse at its source by asking the federal government to divert funding from cruel experiments on animals to modern non-animal methods and human-based clinical research.
