Coca-Cola's History of Lying About Rodeo

The Coca-Cola logo is prominently displayed on this bucking chute in at a Cheyenne, Wyoming rodeo in 2005. This bleeding horse was used in spite of a clear injury to its hoof. The blood spatters inside the chute also show that this wasn't the first injured animal used.
In a letter dated June 6, 2000, Coca-Cola's Shareholders Affairs Manager Mark Preisinger made the following promise:

"The Coca-Cola Company has a policy in force stating that our operations will not sponsor or promote events where there is a risk of physical harm to animals."

This is a pretty clear statement, but Coke's Mr. Preisinger goes on to state even more explicitly:

"In any event, I can assure you, based upon our recent review, that this policy has now been fully implemented. I also want to assure you that if you hear of any violations of this policy anywhere we do business, I would be anxious to know about it and will commit to rectifying the matter promptly."

How stupid does Coke think its consumers are? Ask yourself and Coke why the company continues to lie about its rodeo sponsorship.
The horses shocked at the 2008 Tucson Rodeo, sponsored by Coca-Cola, have been betrayed yet again. Learn more and watch the video here.

This statement was further supported in 2004 by then Consumer Information Manager Bernice Sayer, who reacted to Coke banners found in a Spanish bullring with the following:

"The banner belongs to our bottling partners Coca-Cola Enterprises Ltd and the agreement is between them and the stadium rather than the organizers of bullfighting. However, the Coca-Cola Company has a policy in force stating that our operations would not associate itself where there is a risk of physical harm to animals, and therefore I have asked that the banner be removed during bullfighting events."

This all sounds great, but the truth is that Coke continues to support horrible animal abuse year after year, despite repeated requests from animal advocates for the company to follow its Animal Welfare Policy.

Coke has demonstrated, and continues to demonstrate, that it cares nothing about either animals, or its own written promises and policies. Please do not buy Coca-Cola products until the company stops supporting animal abuse. And then, please write and call Coke and let them know.

Coca-Cola's Involvement with Animal Cruelty

Coca-Cola denies sponsoring rodeo, but this photo tells the truth. The print at the bottom of the ad states: "Copyright 2007 The Coca-Cola Company." Photo from the 2007 Pendleton Round-Up Rodeo, where SHARK documented numerous violations of their "humane rules" and blatant abuse.

Coke has had a long, bloody history of sponsoring bullrings in Mexico, Spain and other bullfighting countries. When SHARK successfully campaigned to force Pepsi Cola to remove its advertisements from bullrings in the late 1990s, Coke promised it had already dumped bullfighting years before, even though its ads were still in the bullrings. Pepsi's ads are now gone.

Coke sponsors greyhound racing, an industry that annually kills thousands of "surplus" animals ranging from excess puppies to older racing dogs that can no longer make money for their exploiters. The greyhound industry also uses live animals such as rabbits as "lures." These animals are often allowed to be torn apart by the greyhounds as part of their "training."

Coke is a sponsor of the Iditarod, a dog sled race that has killed at least 133 dogs, and causes intense suffering and untold numbers of injuries to the dogs forced to race. When they are not racing, the dogs often live under inhumane conditions. Coke gives thousands and thousands of dollars every year to the brutal Iditarod, without blinking an eye at its own hypocrisy.

Coke continues to sponsor rodeos -- pouring money into the violent abuse, maiming and killing of countless animals, even after promising in writing that it would no longer do so. Coke ads are prominent in rodeos across North America, and even in Europe, helping to spread America's brutal "tradition" overseas.

The World Speaks Out Against Coke
Coca-Cola has a long and varied history of betrayal, cruelty, and corruption. From sponsoring rodeo animal abuse to sponsoring ads to the Nazi party, from polluting our waterways to polluting our youth, to killing wildlife to allegations of killing Coke factory-worker dissidents, the poison Coke leaves in everyone's mouth can be seen in the videos below.

Coca-Cola's Responses to Consumers over the Years

When your company sponsors animal abuse in direct violation of your very own corporate policies, you can bet it takes a whole lot of dancing to try and explain that away.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Coca-Cola denies sponsoring rodeo, but this photo tells the truth. Photo from the 2007 CFD Rodeo.

Coca-Cola's Responses
After documenting Coke as a major sponsor at many of the abusive rodeos SHARK investigated in the summer of 2007, we sent the company another letter:

November 30, 2007

Mr. Mark Preisinger
Manager, Shareholder Affairs
Coca-Cola
1 Coca-Cola Plaza
Atlanta, GA 30313-2499

Dear Mr. Preisinger,

It has been over seven years since you wrote a June 6, 2000 letter to Mr. Simon Billeness, then Senior Analyst for Trillium Asset Management Corporation in which you stated:

"The Coca-Cola Company has a policy in force stating that our operations will not sponsor or promote events where there is a risk of physical harm to animals."

The issue at hand was Coke's signs and banners posted by certain Spanish and Mexican bottlers in bullrings. You explained that there was a process of removing the signs and banners that required some time, but then you went on to state:

"In any event, I can assure you, based upon our recent review, that this policy has now been fully implemented. I also want to assure you that if you hear of any violations of this policy anywhere we do business, I would be anxious to know about it and will commit to rectifying the matter promptly."

Your statement was supported in 2004 by then Consumer Information Manager Bernice Sayer, who reacted to Coke banners found in a Spanish bullring with the following:

"The banner belongs to our bottling partners Coca-Cola Enterprises Ltd and the agreement is between them and the stadium rather than the organizers of bullfighting. However, the Coca-Cola Company has a policy in force stating that our operations would not associate itself where there is a risk of physical harm to animals, and therefore I have asked that the banner be removed during bullfighting events."

Over seven years have passed since you wrote the letter to Simon Billeness, and for those seven years SHARK has frequently informed Coke about the fact that the policy has not been fully implemented with regard to Coke sponsored rodeos, which maim and kill untold numbers of animals every year. We have called your office numerous times, and are always shuttled off to public relations people who are powerless to do anything.

The fallback of the public relations department is to rely on the discredited claim that Coke has no control over its bottlers. This is false. I am now formally requesting that you, as an official representative of Coca-Cola, please follow through on your commitment. To refresh your memory, Coca-Cola's Animal Welfare Policy states:

The Coca-Cola Company does not endorse or condone any practice of cruelty to animals, and the Company does not sponsor or promote events where there is a risk of physical harm to animals.

Mr. Preisinger, the very nature of ethics is that they are a restraint on damaging behavior. This is a burden willingly borne by those who wish to live above the law of the jungle. A company that enacts "ethics" that are mere public relations ploys is lower than a company that claims no ethics at all. Coke has already taken itself out of the middle tier in that it has enacted an animal welfare policy. The question now is whether Coke is in the top tier of ethical companies, or the lowest tier of unethical companies.

At this point I don't know how the Coca-Cola Company can claim to be anything but profoundly unethical, but I would like to work with you to resolve that. However, your refusal to deal with this is making that process difficult to impossible. I look forward to hearing from you on this important issue by Tuesday, December 3, 2007.

Sincerely,
Steve Hindi

Animal Welfare Policy
Here is the response SHARK received to the above letter, notably not from Mr. Preisinger, whom we addressed. Instead he chose to hide, just like the rodeo folks, and pass the buck to Coke's public relations department. Here's the original.

December 4, 2007

Dear Mr. Hindi,

In response to your recent letter to Mark Preisinger, Vice President, Public Policy and Stakeholder Engagement, please note that The Coca-Cola Company maintains a long- standing policy regarding animal welfare and the ethical and humane treatment of animals.

Our Company does not sponsor rodeos or bullfighting events. However, rodeos are subject to federal, state and local laws and are closely monitored to ensure adherence to numerous guidelines and restrictions regarding proper treatment of animals. The majority of rodeos are sanctioned by a governing body, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), which has a strict code of rules including 60 regulations that safeguard animal welfare. Violators are subject to fines and disqualification from events.

We recognize the right of independent bottlers to sponsor local events and community initiatives, including the many state fairs and local festivals that celebrate the history and heritage of the Western United States. Because some of these fairs and festivals may include rodeo events, we will reiterate to the bottlers our Company's policy and ask that they ensure that the events they sponsor are compliant with the PRCA guidelines for responsible treatment of animals. And, as we have done in the past, we will alert them to your concerns.

We also have shared your concerns with the PRCA and have asked them to respond to you directly.

Kind regards,

Kari Bjorhus
Director, Public Affairs
The Coca-Cola Company
SHARK responded to the above falsehoods regurgitated by Coke's PR Department thusly:

December 10, 2007

Dear Ms. Bjorhus:

Thank you for your letter of December 4, 2007. While the Coca-Cola Company claims to have a policy regarding animal welfare and the ethical and humane treatment of animals, the only longstanding characteristic of said policy is Coke's refusal to honor it with regard to rodeos that maim and kill untold numbers of animals annually.

In regards to your letter, I will ignore the diversion to supposed laws that protect rodeo animals, because this has nothing to do with Coke's policy that is being violated. I will also ignore your claim that the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) enforces its humane rules, other than to point out that this claim was thoroughly discredited well over a decade ago. In any case, this again in no way would replace Coke's policy, since even a well-run rodeo still subjects animals to the risk of physical harm.

SHARK has over three dozen videos on the Internet that disprove your claim. For your convenience, I have included links to some of theses videos as evidence that your claim of PRCA humane enforcement is absolutely false.

Other videos showing rodeo horses being shocked to make them perform are listed below.

One of rodeo's many lies is that rodeo horses are "Born to Buck". The following three videos show that the tame, domesticated horses in rodeos don't buck until they are shocked with 5,000 - 6,000 volts of electricity and/or harassed into bucking.

Exposing the lie that rodeos provide medical care to the animals they injure:

Steer Busting Finals Busted Big-Time by SHARK, Part 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHxlIpn63mY

Let me cut to the chase of this issue. The fact is that the Coca-Cola Company has a policy that it is knowingly violating that states:

The Coca-Cola Company does not endorse or condone any practice of cruelty to animals, and the Company does not sponsor or promote events where there is a risk of physical harm to animals.

Given this policy, it doesn't even matter if the PRCA enforces humane rules, which it doesn't. The only question is whether animals are injured at rodeos. As the videos aforementioned clearly document, animals are indeed injured and killed at rodeos.

SHARK's CokeCruelty.com web site has both pictures and videos of animals injured and killed at rodeos in violation of your policy. SHARK has been investigating rodeos for over 14 years, and we have thousands of pictures and hours of video footage showing animals being consistently injured and killed.

As for the issue of independent bottlers, please do not pretend that these bottlers do not have to follow Coke policies. Every entity in the corporate world has to follow the procedures and policies set by their corporate headquarters. Your claim about independent bottlers has further been thoroughly discredited with respect to bullfighting and cockfighting. If, in the alternative, Coke is suggesting that independent bottlers in bullfighting and cockfighting countries no longer have to observe a ban on advertising in those venues, please advise. In that case, this will broaden the nature of SHARK's campaign significantly.

In closing, I am requesting a meeting no later than February 2008 between representatives of at least fifteen domestic and international humane organizations to discuss this issue at Coca-Cola headquarters. SHARK is also amenable to holding the meeting at your Chicago location. We could certainly have more than fifteen representatives involved, but that seems to be a manageable number. There are over 160 humane organizations worldwide, the list of which can be viewed on CokeCruelty.com, that are opposed to the treatment of animals in rodeos. If Coca-Cola also wants to invite a representative of the PRCA to address the claim of animal well being at rodeos, then we are open to your wish to do so.

Sincerely,
Steve Hindi
President, SHARK
Below are the most recent statements in the long list of ever-evolving propaganda regarding animal abuse from the Coca-Cola Company. SHARK's comments are in RED.

2007: Coca-Cola's form statement to inquiries regarding its sponsorship of rodeos. Please see SHARK's responses to this same dumbfounding drivel in our rebuttals below.
Thank you for contacting The Coca-Cola Company. We take issues raised by the public very seriously and are committed to listening and understanding any concerns that people have about our Company and our sponsorships. Our Company maintains a long-standing policy regarding the ethical and humane treatment of animals. Additionally, The Coca-Cola Company does not sponsor rodeos or bullfighting events.

Rodeos are subject to federal, state and local laws and are closely monitored to ensure adherence to numerous guidelines and restrictions regarding proper treatment of animals. The majority of rodeos are sanctioned by a governing body, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), which has a strict code of rules including 60 regulations that safeguard animal welfare. Violators are subject to fines and disqualification from events.

If you are interested in more information regarding the welfare of the animals featured in rodeo events, visit the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association website at, www.prorodeo.com. The PRCA has created one of the most comprehensive animal welfare programs in the United States - incorporating rules, enforcement procedures, veterinarians and extensive educational programs with the goal of insuring the highest quality of care and treatment for rodeo livestock.

We recognize the right of independent bottlers to sponsor local events and community initiatives, including the many state fairs and local festivals that celebrate the history and heritage of the Western United States. Because some of these fairs and festivals may include rodeo events, we have communicated to our bottlers the importance of ensuring that the events they sponsor are compliant with the PRCA guidelines for responsible treatment of animals.

We appreciate the opportunity to respond and have relayed your concerns to our bottlers. If you have questions or comments in the future, feel free to contact us again.

Sincerely,

Industry and Consumer Affairs
The Coca-Cola Company
Here's a response from a consumer when he received the above reply from Coke:

Hold up, cowboy. Coke is a sponsor for Cheyenne Frontier Days, the Pendleton Roundup and the Houston Rodeo. Have you seen what happens to animals at these events?

Before Coca-Cola starts spurting information about the "strict" guidelines that PRCA has for how the animals are treated, please take just a few minutes to watch what happens to those animals following those guidelines. If Coca-Cola believes that roping the neck of a calf who is running for his or her life at full speed, whipping the calf into the air and slamming that animal against the ground is ethical or humane, then Coca-Cola has no ethics.

Additionally, rodeos are not closely monitored and federal, state and local laws are sorely lacking of any protections - in fact, they are full of exemptions - for these tortured animals. Have you actually read the laws or are you just giving us PRCA's fodder?

Coca-Cola either supports cruelty to animals or does not. Rodeos are inherently cruel.

As of now, I will NOT be supporting Coca-Cola and am urging everyone I know to boycott you as well. I am disgusted by your outrageously irresponsible PR spin response to this very serious matter.

December 2006

Thank you for contacting The Coca-Cola Company. We always take issues raised by the public very seriously and are committed to listening to special interest groups, understanding, and if at all possible, addressing those concerns.
It is not only possible for Coke to address the concerns of caring people, it is part of their official policy which is wonderfully encapsulated in a June 6, 2000 letter from Coke Shareholders Affairs Manager Mark Preisinger, wherein he made the following promise:

"The Coca-Cola Company has a policy in force stating that our operations will not sponsor or promote events where there is a risk of physical harm to animals."

That seems simple enough, doesn't it? Unless, of course, you are a wholly unethical corporation, which Coca-Cola obviously is.
The Coca-Cola Company has not sponsored a rodeo or rodeo circuit for more than five years. Some independent bottlers in the U.S. and Canada choose to sponsor local rodeos in their respective markets. Those decisions, like all bottler sponsorships, are made at the local level by the individual bottling company, based on consumer and community interest.
This is Coca-Cola's back door method of getting around its policy -- "Blame it on the Local Bottlers." However, if you Google "Coca-Cola Rodeo Sponsor," you'll find dozens of rodeo web sites that claim Coca-Cola, not a bottler, as a rodeo sponsor. At the rodeos it is the Coke name, logo and web site that is advertised, not some bottler. Coke is lying, and that has a rotten taste to it.

Furthermore, Coke prohibited its Spanish and Mexican bottlers from sponsoring bullfighting events, but again only after trying to initially blame bottlers after SHARK publicly exposed Cokes' involvement in this cruel and indefensible bloodletting. In fact, the same basic sequence of events occurred over a decade ago when Coke was found to be sponsoring cockfighting events in Mexico. The company first tried to blame it on the bottlers, and then under heavy pressure, Coke ended the sponsorship. Coca-Cola could have its "bottlers" halt support to rodeo, just as the company halted support to bullfighting and cockfighting.
We appreciate the opportunity to respond and have relayed your concerns to the appropriate management here at the corporate headquarters.

Sincerely,
Chicquilla
Industry and Consumer Affairs
The Coca-Cola Company
It is high time for the relaying of "concerns" and the lying to stop, and for Coke to do the right thing. If a company will not follow its own policies and principles, and then tries to blame its own corruption on its underlings, why would anyone want to trust that company's products?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

April 27, 2006

Thank you for contacting The Coca-Cola Company. We're grateful to be made aware of your concerns.

Concern for the ethical treatment of animals is a cause the The Coca-Cola Company fully supports. The The Coca-Cola Company does not believe, however, that by sponsoring or promoting rodeo events the Company is thereby endorsing or condoning an inherently cruel practice.
If Coca-Cola fully supported the cause of ethical treatment of animals, it would not consider any relationship with rodeos. Which of rodeo's spectacles does Coke NOT consider to be inherently abusive? Steer Busting - the most deadly event in rodeo? The Wild Horse Race - which terrorizes and kills young horses? Calf Roping - in which three to four month old calves are clothes-lined, body-slammed, have their legs tied and are dragged by the neck? Chuck Wagon Races that cause horse heart attacks and horrific pile-ups of dead and dying horses? Shocking bulls and horses with thousands of volts of painful electricity to make them appear wild? Animals are regularly injured and even killed in rodeos because of the brutal treatment they receive.
The Coca-Cola Company and its Bottlers currently sponsor multipurpose entertainment venues that feature our signage and where rodeo contests do occur. The Coca-Cola Company and its Bottlers may in the future choose to sponsor or promote rodeo events.
This is most unfortunate for Coke, because rodeos are becoming more well known not only for their cruelty and brutality, but also for the bogus "humane rules" that are in fact nothing more than a public relations ploy for the association and its sponsors, such as the Coca-Cola Company. Coke, do you remember how you broke with bullfighting only after we caught you lying about having done it already? You knew you couldn't get away with it any more. Back then SHARK gave kudos to Coke for doing the right thing. We did it again when Coke broke with rodeos the first time also. Then your company turned and went back on your word. Coca-Cola needs to find an ethical backbone. Make a commitment to stop supporting animal abuse and stand by it!
The Coca-Cola Company respects the concerns expressed by animal welfare groups, including concern for the proper treatment of animals at rodeos.
What a joke. Coke sponsors some of the most brutal and deadly rodeos in the country. Rodeos such as the Cheyenne Frontier Days have been exposed repeatedly for humane violations and its dead and injured animal victims. Coke has shown it respects only money - nothing more. Not ethics, not morality, not compassion, not integrity - just money.
In order to stay fully informed of those concerns, The Coca-Cola Company has and will maintain an open dialogue with animal welfare groups regarding the proper treatment of animals.
This is absolutely false. SHARK is the lead organization against rodeos world-wide, and there is no "dialogue" between Coca-Cola and SHARK, nor any other animal welfare organization that we are aware of. We invite Coca-Cola to educate us as to which animal welfare organizations Coca-Cola maintains a dialogue with. It will take us all of ten minutes to expose any misinformation as a lie.
The Coca-Cola Company has a long history of responsible corporate citizenship. Good corporate citizenship is a belief we not only take seriously, but put into practice everywhere we do business.
SHARK is more than happy to give Coca-Cola every opportunity to demonstrate responsible corporate citizenship. Why hasn't Coke demanded that the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) make a full and ongoing public disclosure of all animal injury and death reports for all of its rodeos, as well as all disciplinary reports with regard to all PRCA members? This information is something that any true sport would already make available, but that has never been the case with the PRCA. We trust the Coca-Cola Company will agree that failing to do that, neither the PRCA nor any other rodeo association should be worthy of any association with the Coca-Cola Company or any subsidiary or independent bottler.

But instead of demanding disclosure and reassurances from the industry that Coke gives hundreds of thousands of dollars to support, this company asks the rodeo to defend its reprehensible sponsorship to the public because Coke can't do it. Read an example of this in a letter to the Honorable Maneka Gandhi, Member of the Indian Parliament, from the PRCA's Houston Rodeo.
Please be assured that we will share your comments with the appropriate management here at the corporate headquarters. We're sure they will also appreciate receiving your remarks.

Sincerely,

Lesley
Industry and Consumer Affairs
The Coca-Cola Company

Let us give you some remarks to take to the decision makers. The true meaning of Coca-Cola surely must be, "Lying Corporate Jerks who long ago traded their hearts in for calculators." Coke, you knew what the right thing was to do, and when you thought it would serve your interest you did it. Then, when you thought you could make an extra nickel by doing the wrong thing, you did that. You stand for nothing whatsoever but making every last penny that you can, regardless of the damage, injury or whatever. All so you can sell your various varieties of poison. As people learn the truth about rodeo animal abuse and corruption, you may rest assured that we shall forever link Coke and rodeos, if for no other reason to show other corporates what happens when their behavior is completely devoid of ethics, principles or humanity.

Please do forward any of SHARK's comments, along with your own thoughts, to the appropriate decision makers within the Coca-Cola Company.

ANIMAL TESTING - Page 3 Empty
MessageSujet: Re: ANIMAL TESTING    ANIMAL TESTING - Page 3 Icon_minitimeVen 13 Juil - 2:30

Sample Letter to the Coca-Cola Company
Below is a sample letter written courtesy the Kinship Circle. Please feel free to use the information below, but do include your own original thoughts when contacting Coke. Many identical letters will dilute the impact.

Dear Mr. Neville, Board of Directors, and The Coca-Cola Company:

I am disappointed to learn The Coca-Cola Company has retracted its vow to drop rodeo sponsorship. In fact, Coca-Cola's logo adorned the bucking chute at a 2005 Cheyenne, Wyoming rodeo where a bloody horse was forced to perform despite an obvious hoof injury. Photos of more spattered blood in the chute indicate this horse was not the only wounded animal on display. With advertisements in rodeos throughout North America, Coca-Cola seems content to endorse animal abuse.

Interestingly, a June 6, 2000 letter from Mark Preisinger, Coke Shareholders Affairs Manager, proclaimed: "The Coca-Cola Company has a policy in force stating that our operations will not sponsor or promote events where there is a risk of physical harm to animals... I also want to assure you that if you hear of any violations of this policy anywhere we do business, I would be anxious to know about it and will commit to rectifying the matter promptly."

I respectfully submit the fact that all animals used in rodeos are at "risk of physical harm."

"Without torture, there can be no rodeo," claims Peggy W. Larson, DVM, MS, JD, a former bareback bronco rider who says horses and bulls buck wildly only because they are in pain from rigid flank straps and spurring. Rodeo handlers bully animals with electric prods, straps, spurs and tail twisting. On-site veterinarians cannot intervene once a deliberately agitated animal is released into the ring.

Their eyes bulge in terror. They wheeze and tremble. Some suffer for days before they are hauled to the slaughterhouse. While the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PCRA) and International Professional Rodeo Association (IPRA) allege compliance with animal welfare regulations, graphic documentation tells a different story.

One cruelty investigator who records calf-roping "rehearsals" observes, "Without the noise of the crowd and announcer you can actually hear the calves' bodies slamming on the ground, and their choking and coughing after being clotheslined." In holding chutes, calves have their tails twisted and wrenched over steel bars. As they flee into the ring at speeds up to 27 miles per hour, the "cowboy" neck-chokes and smashes them into the ground. He typically body-slams them again for theatrical effect.

For bucking events, the horses' intestines and groins are cinched so tightly they lurch in response to the pain. Animals who won't buck are shocked with electric prods. Many careen into fences, posts or chutes.

In steer roping contests, a rider lassos a running, 700-pound steer and jerks the animal's head and neck in a 180-degree loop, pitching him into the dirt. The steer is tripped, tossed and lugged for 30 feet or more so the roper can subdue him and bind his legs for a score.

Animal welfare groups worldwide denounce rodeo's trail of busted bones, cracked skulls and severed spines. Please keep me informed of any decision to cease rodeo sponsorship, so I may let family, friends and colleagues know Coca-Cola does not support verified animal cruelty.

Sincerely,

The bloody marks inside this bucking chute at the Cheyenne Frontier Days shows that already injured horses are used, and to make it worse, this one has just been shocked with more than 5,000 volts of electricity from the Hot-Shot in the hand of the man on the right. Proving once again, rodeos' claims about their "humane rules" are pure propaganda. Coca-Cola should be ashamed to sponsor rodeo!

Undercover Investigation Details Misery for Dogs, Cats, and Rabbits

<BR> at a Product Testing Laboratory.</a>.A nine-month PETA undercover investigation found that hundreds of dogs, cats, and rabbits were subjected to vicious and abusive handling, neglect, and miserable living conditions at Professional Laboratory and Research Services, Inc. (PLRS)—a Corapeake, North Carolina–based contract laboratory that tested companion animal products such as flea and tick sprays and spot treatments on animals. Industry giants—including Bayer, Eli Lilly, Pfizer, Novartis, Schering-Plough (now Merck), Sergeant's, Wellmark, and Merial, the makers of Frontline flea and tick products—are among the corporations that have paid PLRS in the past to force-feed experimental compounds to dogs and cats and smear chemicals onto the animals' skin.

PETA's investigation revealed that dogs, cats, and rabbits used by PLRS suffered from untreated illnesses, injuries, and burns and that many animals were covered in sores because they couldn't escape the urine, bleach, and water that pooled in the facility's cages. Many animals at the facility frequently exhibited stress-induced abnormal behavior resulting from anxiety and boredom. Animals were often forced to sit in their own waste, and many were sprayed with bleach and other harsh chemicals when the cages that they were being kept in were cleaned while the animals were still in them. A PLRS supervisor said that the untreated sores were "just part of … life" at the facility.

PETA's investigator also documented that PLRS employees kicked, threw, grabbed, dropped, and dragged dogs; roughly grabbed and lifted rabbits by their ears; violently threw and slammed cats into cages; and viciously cursed at animals, calling them names such as "asshole," "bitch," and "motherfucker."

Animals at PLRS were used in cruel and painful tests. In one experiment that was conducted for a major corporation whose products are stocked on store shelves nationwide, a test chemical was applied to the necks of 57 cats. The cats exhibited severe adverse reactions that day, suffering seizures and bleeding from the nose and mouth. In spite of the extreme and obvious reactions, the cats were exposed to the chemical for a second time that very same day. Rabbits at PLRS were intentionally and repeatedly forced to "wear" a tightly wrapped capsule containing thousands of ticks and were then killed.

While PLRS has closed its doors and has surrendered its animals—thanks in large part to your e-mails, letters, phone calls, and support of PETA—countless others are still being used by other laboratories in the development and testing of companion animal products. Please be a voice for these animals.

Take a minute of your time today to urge pharmaceutical companies to use only non-animal methods in the development and testing of companion animal products.

Dear [Decision Maker],

* (Edit Letter Below) I was deeply upset by a video that I just watched showing the horrible mistreatment of dogs, cats, and rabbits at Corapeake, North Carolinabased contract testing laboratory Professional Laboratory and Research Services, Inc. (PLRS), which your company has been known to do business with.

Now that PLRS has surrendered its animals and has shut its doors for good, I ask that you stop conducting experiments on animals in the development and testing of companion animal products.

While the footage shot inside PLRS is particularly disturbing, I am sure you agree that all animal experimentation (the use of cats and dogs against their will in tests that may cause them pain and distress and may result in death) is, by its very nature, cruel. I hope that you will do the right thing and pledge to use only non-animal methods in the development and testing of your products. Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Save 15 chimpanzees from testing

NIH should release the "Rockville 15" chimpanzees to a sanctuary

Sign Elizabeth's Petition

Director, National Institutes of Health (NIH): Release the Rockville 15 to a chimpanzee sanctuary
Started by: Elizabeth, Washington, District Of Columbia
We request that you use the considerable influence of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to ensure that the fifteen young chimpanzees used at BIOQUAL, Inc., in Rockville, Md., are released to a sanctuary.
We request the 11 chimpanzees who were leased by NIH and housed a BIOQUAL until recently to be transferred from New Iberia Research Center, Louisiana, to Sanctuary and the four remaining chimpanzees (Loretta, Ricky, Tiffany and Torian), being housed at BIOQUAL, Inc, be transferred directly to sanctuary.
These chimpanzees, collectively known as the Rockville 15, range in age from just 2 to 7 years old and were likely born in violation of NIH's own 1995 breeding moratorium.
Considering that they are unnecessary for human health research, as detailed in the recent Institute of Medicine report, they should be released to sanctuary where it is cheaper for you to house them, and a much better environment for these chimpanzees to live. Why condemn these intelligent beings to lives of misery when scientists have clearly stated the benefits of alternative research models?
They must not live out their days in a laboratory that has repeatedly violated the Animal Welfare Act.
New Iberia is currently under investigation by the United States Department of Agriculture for an incident in which the decomposing bodies of three monkeys were found trapped in a metal chute. In addition, between 2000 and 2008, 14 infant chimpanzees died as a result of traumatic injury at New Iberia.
We ask you to please ensure that the Rockville 15 are retired to a sanctuary immediately.
Thank you.

Help Stop Ferret Abuse in Army Lab

In recent years, PETA has had significant success at convincing the few universities and hospitals around the country that are lagging behind their more progressive counterparts to modernize their curricula by replacing intubation training laboratories in which cats and ferrets have hard plastic tubes repeatedly shoved down their delicate windpipes with modern simulators that are humane and better prepare medical professionals to save lives. Even major military facilities like the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth and the Naval Medical Center San Diego have made the change after hearing from PETA.

Yet despite pleas from PETA and medical experts, the Madigan Army Medical Center continues to torment ferrets in this archaic training even though it stated in 2007 that the practice "will be phased out due to the development of adequate simulation training models" and the fact that military regulations actually require that animal laboratories be replaced with simulators when available.

There is no excuse for Madigan to keep harming ferrets when 21st century non-animal training methods are already in use at nearly every other facility in the country.

We need your help. Please click here to send an e-mail to Madigan officials urging them to keep their 2007 promise by immediately replacing the cruel use of animals for intubation training with modern simulators.

Thank you for all that you are doing to help animals!

Sincerely,

Justin Goodman, M.A.

Urge Madigan Army Medical Center to Stop Tormenting Ferrets

Despite having publicly announced in 2007 that its cruel use of ferrets for pediatric intubation training "will be phased out due to the development of adequate simulation training models," the Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington, continues to have trainees repeatedly shove hard plastic tubes down ferrets' delicate windpipes.

This cruel and archaic procedure can cause bleeding, swelling, pain, scarring, collapsed lungs, and even death and has been abandoned by nearly every other medical training facility in the country in favor of superior and humane infant simulators.

Department of Defense regulations require that alternatives to the use of animals be implemented whenever available, and military facilities such as the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, the Naval Medical Center San Diego, the William Beaumont Army Medical Center, and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences have all replaced the use of animals for intubation training with modern simulators.

Similarly, more than 90 percent of pediatric residency programs at hospitals and medical schools in the U.S.—including that of Madigan's neighbor, the University of Washington School of Medicine—use only non-animal methods for intubation training.

Even the American Heart Association, which sponsors the course at Madigan for which ferrets are still being used, states that it "does not require or endorse the use of animals" and that it "recommends that any hands-on intubation training … be performed on lifelike human manikins."

Research shows that simulators better prepare medical professionals to intubate seriously ill or injured children because they more accurately replicate human anatomy and allow people to practice these skills repeatedly until they are confident and proficient.

Please contact Madigan officials and urge them to abide by military regulations and honor the public pledge they made in 2007 by replacing the cruel use of animals for intubation training with modern medical simulators, which the medical center has already determined can meet its needs.

Personalizing your own subject line and message will help draw attention to your e-mail and make it more effective.

Scientists Sew Up Kittens’ Eyes In Shocking Experiment

More than 30 kittens were used in tests funded by British taxpayers to find out how the brain responds to sensory deprivation. The tests took place at the University of Cardiff, in Wales. Specifically, scientists were sewing up kittens’ eyes for a shocking experiment. All of the kittens were put down after the study. Five had their eyes sewn closed for up to a week. Twenty-six new-born kittens were raised in darkness for up to 12 weeks. As reported in The Daily Mirror, Comedian Ricky Gervais led the fury.

He said: “I am appalled that kittens are being deprived of sight by having their eyelids sewn shut.
“I thought sickening experiments like these were a thing of the past.” The British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection’s Michelle Thew added: “This is unacceptable cruel research. “The public will be shocked to learn of publicly-funded experiments where kittens have been subjected to this.”

Meanwhile, researchers insist the experiments at Cardiff University are humane and took place in a bid to find a cure for lazy eye in children, which can lead to blindness. As someone who has suffered from lazy eye since birth, I can assure everyone that I yearned for a cure from this syndrome, but I would prefer to keep my lazy eye rather than know that kittens’ eyes were being sewn together.

The University of Cardiff defended the experiment, which ended in 2010.

However, Ricky Gervais, The Office creator told The Mirror, “I am appalled that kittens are being deprived of sight by having their eyelids sewn shut. I thought sickening experiments like these were a thing of the past.”

A statement from The University reads,

“Cardiff University rejects the accusation this experiment is cruel or unnecessary. It is impossible to use any other kind of technique for this study.

“The work was approved by both the University’s ethical review process and the Home Office Animals in Science Regulation Unit as part of the licensing process.”

Dominic Sullivan, Cats Protection’s Director of Legal Services, said: “We are not sure why Cardiff University used cats in this case. “The law is quite clear, a licence cannot be granted by the Home Office to use cats in scientific experiments unless animals of no other species are suitable for the purpose of the programme. This might be the case in, say, developing a cat vaccine.

!If you believe that these experiments are beyond outrageous, please sign our petition telling Cardiff University in Wales to stop conducting frivolous and sadistic experiments on animals.

.The latest figures released by the Home Office in its annual Statistics of Scientific Procedures on Living Animals report show the number of animal experiments performed in the UK are at the highest they’ve been in 25 years, with a rise of 68,100 procedures in the last year alone.

The statistics, of course, don’t mention what exactly happened to these animals or how much they suffered, only which species were used and what percentage of experiments were mild, moderate or severe. Tests involving cats went up 26 percent, pigs 37 percent, birds 14 percent and fish 15 percent. Testing of rats was down by 11 percent, guinea pigs by 16 percent and dogs by 21 percent. The number of experiments being done on primates also declined.

Troy Seidle, Director of Research & Toxicology for Humane Society International/UK, called the report “deeply depressing news for science, medical progress and animal welfare.”

According to the Home Office, more than 3.79 million experiments were started in 2011. In 1987, 3.5 million experiments were reported. Animal advocates have found the increase to be at odds with government promises to reduce the overall number of animals used in research.

“You may be able to reduce the number of animals in specific areas, but the overall rise would tend to mask this. It’s something you can’t do in 12 months,” said Martin Walsh, head of the Animals Scientific Procedures division at the Home Office who calls the goal “a long-term project.”

Officials continue to claim that they’re promoting the 3R’s (reduction, refinement and replacement), but the numbers in the report tell a different story.

“The statistics show that last year, 35% of animal experiments were for fundamental biological research – much of it curiosity-driven, only 13% directly for human medicine or dentistry, and 43% of animal research was the breeding of animals with a Harmful Mutation or Genetic Modification (GM). The use of animals for fundamental research in universities has continued to rise (+7%). This rise in abstract/fundamental research, which does not involve trials for medicines, contrasts with the research industry’s public stance that research on animals is focused on testing cures for disease,” according to the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV).

Yet, researchers and politicians continue to claim that their use of animals is vital to human health, or they wouldn’t be doing it otherwise, and that bringing an end to vivisection will mean an end to exploring cures for currently untreatable diseases. Oddly enough, the number of cancer related experiments dropped by 10,200, while toxicology experiments (eye and skin irritation and developmental consequences) went up two percent to 399,000. Apparently getting more chemicals on the market is more important, or profitable, than helping cancer patients.

“The Government has so far got away with doing nothing on its post-election pledge to work to reduce the number of animal experiments. Millions of animals continue to suffer and die in our laboratories. This lack of progress is completely unacceptable. We need to see meaningful and lasting changes for animals in laboratories. The UK should be leading the way in reducing animal testing. Unfortunately, these latest statistics show that the trend is actually going in the opposite direction,” said the BUAV’s Chief Executive Michelle Thew.

“Furthermore, there is no evidence that all this appalling suffering is producing any meaningful benefit to humankind because the Government and research industry persistently refuse to subject animal testing to rigorous review.”

A separate report found 39 license infringements in the past five years, one incident killed more than 200 mice who drowned in flooded cages, while another incident at the same facility resulted in the deaths of nearly 200 rats who were believed to be contaminated by water that had leaked through the roof.

Scientists at Cardiff University in Wales have conducted a particularly horrific animal experiment. They sewed shut the eyes of newborn kittens to "learn how the brain responds to sensory deprivation." The same experiment--funded by tax dollars--also placed cameras in the kittens' brains.

This research is both sadistic and frivolous. The differences between humans and cats are so considerable that research obtained this way will discover nothing that will save or improve human life. A United States veterinarian has confirmed that the procedure was extremely painful for the kittens.

Animal activists are understandably outraged, and celebrity actor Ricky Gervais is leading the charge. Gervais told the Mirror "I thought sickening experiments like these were a thing of the past." Tell Cardiff University to stop conducting frivolous and sadistic experiments on animals!

Close a Deadly Loophole, Protect Chimpanzees

SIGN PETITION

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/330/325/298/

Please speak up to protect chimpanzees who can't defend themselves. The worldwide population of wild chimpanzees has fallen by nearly 70 percent in the past 30 years -- take action now to save these animals. Wild chimpanzees have been protected under the Endangered Species Act since 1976, but a special rule exempts captive chimpanzees from protection. This loophole in the Act is preventing the recovery of the species in the wild by encouraging their illegal trade. Chimpanzees are endangered due to habitat loss, poaching and illegal trafficking -- wild chimpanzees are captured and sold for use as entertainment, as pets and as test subjects. We have a critical moment right now to help captive and wild chimpanzees: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering whether to protect captive chimpanzees under the Endangered Species Act. Send your comments today in support of protecting every chimpanzee as endangered.

VICTORY: Air China to Stop Shipping Monkeys to Laboratories

Apologies to the few subscribers who received an e-mail in error earlier today.

Great news! Following vigorous campaigning by PETA and its affiliates, Air China has now confirmed that it's joining the many other airlines worldwide that refuse to transport primates to laboratories to undergo terrifying experiments.

iStockphoto.com/kaniwi

This victory was achieved through the efforts of thousands of concerned people worldwide who contacted Air China through PETA affiliate action alerts, generating nearly 30,000 e-mails to Air China's offices around the world. With Air China no longer participating in this bloody trade, experimenters will find it harder to get their hands on more victims. Thank you so much for your efforts for animals. We could never have achieved this or any of our other victories for animals without you!

Let's keep up the momentum. Please urge the few remaining airlines still profiting from this cruel business to stop shipping monkeys to be tortured and killed in laboratories.

AUGUST 3RD 2012

Ask Airlines to Stop Shipping Monkeys to Be Tortured

Pavel Sigarteu | cc by 2.0 Every year, tens of thousands of non-human primates are transported from countries such as China, Mauritius, Cambodia, Vietnam and Indonesia to the EU and US to be imprisoned in laboratories and tormented in experiments. Some are bred in captivity in cramped, squalid monkey factory farms, while others are stolen from their families in the wild.

The traumatised monkeys are crammed into small wooden crates and transported in the backs of trucks and the dark and terrifying cargo holds of planes, often on passenger flights just below unsuspecting customers. In the UK, more than 1,000 monkeys are imported from beyond the borders of the EU each year, while according to the US Fish and Wildlife Service, nearly 23,000 non-human primates were brought into the US in 2010 – nearly all of them destined for laboratories. Nearly 3,000 monkeys were imported by animal testing conglomerate Shin Nippon Biomedical Laboratories, where recent photos and video footage leaked by a whistleblower show sick, distraught monkeys suffering horribly from tests in which they were injected with experimental chemicals.

Almost every major airline in the world – including British Airways, Aer Lingus, Delta Air Lines, Qantas, American Airlines, Cathay Pacific and dozens of others – refuses to take any part in this violent industry and prohibits the transportation of primates to laboratories. However, an increasingly small group of airlines – including Air Canada, China Eastern Airlines, Continental Airlines, Philippine Airlines and Vietnam Airlines – continues to profit from animals' misery by transporting monkeys destined for US laboratories.

Please be a voice for the monkeys who are suffering in the primate trade. Take a minute of your time now to urge airlines that still transport monkeys to laboratories to join their peers and adopt a formal policy against the transportation of non-human primates for use in experiments.
SubjectI was dismayed to learn that your airline continues to facilitate cruelty to animals by transporting primates destined for laboratories. These highly social, intelligent beings are routinely mutilated, poisoned, deprived of food and water, forcibly immobilised in restraint devices, infected with painful and deadly diseases and psychologically tormented. Additionally, primates suffer from the long and gruelling transport in the cargo holds of planes and in the backs of trucks. For these reasons, nearly every major airline – including Cathay Pacific, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and Aer Lingus – refuses to transport primates for use in experiments. It is shameful that your airline lags behind and continues to support this cruel practice.

Please join leading airline companies and adopt a formal policy prohibiting the transport of primates destined for laboratories in order to ensure that your company plays no role in the suffering of these animals.MessageSignoff All mandatory fields are marked with an asterisk. *

Urge Cardiff to Stop Blinding Kittens

Experiments at Cardiff University have been revealed in which kittens were raised in darkness or had their eyelids sewn shut and were then subjected to brain experiments and killed. Thirty-one kittens (along with their mothers, in some cases) were used in the experiments, which took place in 2010 but only recently came to light. It is very possible that Cardiff continues to conduct animal experiments of this kind.

Please join PETA UK in contacting the university's vice chancellor. Demand that the university immediately commit to ending all experiments on cats as well as any experiments that involve blinding animals or interfering with their brains, and ask that all animal experiments be replaced with humane methods.

Thank you in advance for taking action for animals.

Urge Cardiff to stop experiments blinding animals

Experiments at Cardiff University have been revealed in which kittens were raised in darkness or had their eyelids sewn shut, and were then subjected to brain experiments and killed. 31 kittens (and their mothers in some cases) were used in the research which took place in 2010 but has only recently come to light. It is very possible that Cardiff is continuing to conduct animal research of this kind. Please contact them to demand that they stop these tests.

Kittens were raised in total darkness for up to three months in the experiment, while others had one eyelid sewn shut after a month of life. Others were reared in the laboratory in "normal" conditions for up to a year but all the cats and kittens were subjected to brain surgery and killed at the end of the experiment. The experiments, published in the European Journal of Neuroscience in 2012, were at least partially paid for by the taxpayer as they were supported by a Medical Research Council grant but the paper makes no reference to the treatment of human conditions and has no direct application to the study of human eye diseases.

About 150 cats were used in research in the UK in 2011 (the last year for which we have figures) but the number of experiments they were subjected to shows that many were used in more than one test. Official figures for 2011 show that over 25,000 tests on animals involved "interference with the special senses" and over 20,000 involved "interference with the brain". The majority of animals were rats and mice although monkeys, ferrets and others were used. Neither the research paper published by Cardiff or official figures can possibly convey the confusion, fear and suffering of animals deprived of their normal vision.

Cardiff University carried out over 50,000 experiments on animals in 2011. Please contact the university's vice-chancellor to demand that they commit immediately to conduct no experiments on cats or which involve blinding animals or interfering with animals' brains, and that they utilise humane methods to replace all animal experiments.
SubjectDear Dr Grant,

In the light of the public outcry resulting from publicity surrounding the conduct of vision experiments on cats at Cardiff University, please commit immediately to a policy prohibiting research on cats or any that involves interfering with the senses of all animals. I also urge you on ethical and scientific grounds to replace all animal research currently taking place at the university with humane and effective non-animal methods.

Experiments at Cardiff University involved rearing kittens in complete darkness or sewing their eyelids shut and subjecting them to brain surgery before killing them. This cruel experiment flies in the face of public concern about the use of animals such as cats in such tests and is unjustified scientifically or ethically. The paper published as a result of the work largely replicates the findings of other studies and has no direct relevance to the treatment of human vision problems. To generate much-needed treatments for ambylopia and other conditions, researchers must use human volunteers and tissues, and effective, modern techniques such as fMRI imaging.

I urge Cardiff to utilise effective, modern non-animal techniques in to replace all animal experimentation currently taking place in your institution. Cardiff must lead the way in science and ethics and embrace the techniques of the future, not the cruel and useless methods of the past.

Yours sincerely,MessageSignoff All mandatory fields are marked with an asterisk. *

British scientists have carried out a series of controversial experiments in which the eyes of kittens were sewn shut.
The revelation has sparked a row with animal rights campaigners who called the experiments ‘unacceptably cruel’.
The British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV), which opposes all testing on animals, claims the research into a childhood eye condition could have been carried out on humans using different experiments.
Experiment: The kittens had their eyelids stitched up (file picture of kitten asleep) as part of trials to find out how the brain responds to sensory deprivation
However, Cardiff University said it was impossible to use any other method and stressed it followed strict Home Office guidelines to justify the use of cats and ensure minimal suffering.

Cats are used in eye research because they have forward-facing eyes like humans, and are born with poor vision and ‘learn’ to see as their brain cells develop connections with the eye.
If this process falters in early childhood it leads to amblyopia, better known as lazy eye, which can lead to loss of vision, crossed eye or blindness in one eye.

Deputy Leader of Cardiff Council Ralph Cook said the findings 'can't be transferred to humans in anyway'
In the study into eye development, five kittens were raised normally for a month before having surgery under general anaesthetic to sew up their eyes for either two or seven days.
Another 11 kittens were raised in total darkness with their mother for between one and 12 weeks and 15 other cats were raised in normal conditions for up to a year.
All 31 cats were then anaesthetised and the activity in their brains and eyes was monitored to see how their vision had developed, before they were put down.
BUAV chief executive Michelle Thew said: ‘We know the public will be shocked to learn of publicly funded experiments at Cardiff University in which kittens have been subjected to unpleasant procedures such as depriving them of light or sewing up an eyelid before invasive brain surgery and death.’
BUAV’s veterinary adviser Dr Ned Buyukmihci said: ‘There are established methods of obtaining essentially the same information in a humane way from people.’
But Cardiff University stressed the research was subject to an ethical review by the Home Office’s Science in Animals Regulation Unit.
It said developmental eye disorders, such as amblyopia, are incurable beyond childhood and understanding how the brain adapts to signals from the eye would help patients in the long-term.
A spokesman said: ‘Cardiff University completely rejects the accusation that this experiment, which was completed in 2010, is cruel or unnecessary.
Criticism: The experiment on 31 kittens at Cardiff University (pictured) has been slammed by animal rights groups who have branded it 'cruel'
‘The University will always use alternative technology where it exists and only uses animals when absolutely necessary.
‘While a treatment for older children may be some time away, Cardiff University believes this research raises the prospect of markedly improving the sight of sufferers of this serious condition.’
A spokesman for the Medical Research Council, which part- funded the research from taxpayers’ money, said: ‘Our reviewers judged that this project proposal was worthwhile and of high quality, in the face of very strong competition for funding.’
The same procedure on cats was at the centre of an animal-rights furore in the 1980s in which activists attacked Professor Colin Blakemore, of Oxford University, who was researching childhood blindness.

The ten thousand animals killed a day in UK laboratories were supposed to receive increased legal protection under revisions to a 2010 EU directive. But a recent report indicates that the UK government plans to keep their flawed laws intact and will continue to allow the nation's labs to conduct an excessive number of animal experiments.

Minimal changes to the 2010 EU directive are not enough to protect animals from the rising number of cruel lab experiments in the UK. The UK government is currently debating whether or not to abolish a secrecy clause that currently protects labs and denies protection for lab animals. Without the clause, animal experiments will not be allowed to continue out of sight and out of mind, and facilities will become answerable to the public.

UK citizens have a right to know what goes on behind the research labs' closed doors. Tell the UK government to create an effective and transparent animal experimentation law!

Dear lawmaker,

The proposed revisions to the 2010 EU directive are not enough to curb the inexcusably high number of animal experiments conducted in the UK. By 2013, a drastically different law should be in place to decrease the 10,000 animals killed a day in UK lab experiments.

It is absolutely imperative that a secrecy clause is deleted from the UK's animal experimentation laws. With such a huge number of animals falling victim to lab experiments -- transparency is key. The public has a right to know what is happening to animals behind closed doors. If UK citizens do not have access to this information, the number of animal experiments will only go up.

[Your comments will be inserted here.]

Please don't waste the opportunity to amend such a critical law that affects the lives and welfare of tens of thousands of animals. I urge you to implement bold, and effective changes that will decrease the number of animals killed in lab research in the UK.

Switch to cruelty-free household products

Do you know if the products that you use every day were tested on animals? Dena McAbee is challenging consumers to purchase brands that do not contribute to the suffering of countless animals. Take Dena's pledge to swap an unethical brand that you usually buy for a cruelty-free alternative. I pledge to change at least ONE of my household products to a Cruelty-Free brand.

Many of the cosmetics, personal-care products, and household products that we use every day are tested on animals. Wouldn't you rather your consumer dollars go towards products that don't contribute to animal suffering? By swapping just one brand that you usually buy to a cruelty-free product you can help send a powerful message to popular companies that there are better, more humane ways to test their products.

Whether it be your toothpaste, your mouthwash, your dish-washing detergent or your shampoo and conditioner - just switch to one product that doesn't conduct or commission any animal tests on ingredients, formulations, or finished products.
For reference check out these two lists of For reference check out these two lists of companies that do test on animals and companies that are cruelty-free.

If we all make one small change, we can make a world of difference in combating animal cruelty. .

SEPTEMBER THE 12TH 2012

Meet Double Trouble, a Cat Killed by UW-Madison
Inboxx

Double Trouble was a gentle tabby cat who was mutilated and eventually killed after months of pain, suffering, and neglect by experimenters at UW-Madison.

Double Trouble was not unlike the cat you might share your home with, who snuggles with you at night, loves to give kisses, and enjoys sunshine, attention, and love. UW treated Double Trouble like nothing but a test tube, drilling holes into her skull, screwing a metal post to her head, and applying toxic chemicals to her ears in order to deafen her. She developed infections and became depressed, and half her face was paralyzed. Eventually, experimenters labeled Double Trouble's experiment a failure, and they killed and decapitated her.

DON'T LET ANOTHER CAT SUFFER LIKE DOUBLE TROUBLE:
TAKE ACTION NOW!

3.1KNIH: Stop Letting UW-Madison Kill Cats!

This is Double Trouble:

According to internal documents obtained by PETA, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) this gentle tabby cat had holes drilled into her skull, steel coils implanted in her eyes, and electrodes implanted in her brain, and she was intentionally deafened by having a toxic chemical applied to her inner ear.

Once, Double Trouble even woke up while experimenters were cutting into her head.

After several surgeries, she developed infections, became depressed, and started to twitch, and half her face became paralyzed. But experimenters kept abusing her for months, and when they decided that the project had failed, they killed and decapitated Double Trouble. See more photos of Double Trouble here.

It's not just Double Trouble who has been mutilated by UW. Other cats used in these UW experiments have even had their ears cut off. Experimenters justify the use of 30 cats like Double Trouble per year in this cruel project, not to save human lives but so that they can "keep up a productive publication record that ensures our constant funding." The federal government continues to support this irrelevant and deadly project and has provided UW with more than $3 million in grant money to abuse cats even though researchers at other institutions around the world are already using modern methods with human volunteers to investigate how the brain locates and processes sound.

Tell the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to STOP funding the mutilation and killing of cats like Double Trouble at UW-Madison.

* Subject
Dear [Decision Maker],

* (Edit Letter Below) I was shocked to learn that the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders has given more than $3 million for a series of cruel experiments on cats at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW). In the studies, cats have steel coils implanted in their eyes, holes drilled into their skulls, and electrodes implanted in their brains. Sometimes, cats used in these UW experiments have had their ears cut off or are intentionally deafened by having a toxic chemical applied to their inner ear. The cats are then deprived of food for several days in order to coerce them to look in the direction of sounds during experimental sessions in which their heads are immobilized by a bolt screwed into their skulls.

Internal UW documents and photographs obtained by PETA show that one cat subjected to this experiment, an orange tabby cat named Double Trouble, woke up while experimenters were cutting into her head. Following a series of invasive surgeries, she developed infections, became lethargic and depressed, started to twitch, and suffered paralysis in half her face. After UW deemed the experiment a failure, the experimenters killed and decapitated Double Trouble so that they could examine her brain.

Equally shocking is that UW experimenters justified the use of the 30 cats for this crude experiment in their protocol not by saying that it would enhance human health but by stating that it was necessary for them to "keep up a productive publication record that ensures our constant funding." I find it troubling that millions of tax dollars are being spent to abuse and kill animals and further the personal careers of a few animal experimenters, rather than being invested in research that would benefit the American people.

Today, many laboratories are conducting modern and relevant sound localization studies using human volunteers. I urge your agency to end its financial support of this cruel and sloppy experiment at UW and divert funding toward humane and applicable human-based research.

Sincerely,
Auréie Iparraguirre

Photos: Double Trouble at UW-Madison
The University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW) fought for more than three years to keep these photos of Double Trouble’s abuse a secret until a successful PETA lawsuit compelled the university to release the disturbing images. WARNING: The photographs that follow are graphic.

Stop Torture of Cats in Laboratory Experiments
By Ash Watkins on September 16, 2012

Target: Dr. Francis S. Collins, Director of the National Institute of Health

Goal: End experimental torture and murder of cats at the University of Wisconsin–Madison

At the University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW–Madison), domestic cats are put through hellish and painful medical procedures in the name of “science.” Not only could these experiments be carried out safely on human volunteers, but they are making no valuable contribution to human health. These experiments are part of a project funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) to understand how the brain determines locations of sounds. Each year, UW–Madison scientists experiment on, and kill, 30 cats in order to continue receiving funding from the NIH, even though the experiments serve little scientific or medical purpose.

PETA has recently obtained access to photographs and records taken of these cruel experiments – records that officials at UW–Madison desperately sought to keep secret. The photos and records tell a grisly story about the torture and deaths of the innocent cats that were chosen to be victimized by experimenters. The cats undergo multiple surgeries for which they are often inadequately anesthetized and from which they may never heal.

Steel posts are drilled into their skulls and electrodes are placed in their brains. During experiments, their heads are bolted in place and they are restrained. Also, they are often starved and deafened prior to experimentation. After a few months of this torment, the cats are finally killed and decapitated so their brains can be dissected.

These cruel experiments are irrelevant and useless, and yet they continue to be carried out for the purpose of receiving funds, rather than for scientific advancement or improvement in human health. Experimenters at UW–Madison will continue this torture as long as they get money from the NIH. Sign this petition and tell NIH director Dr. Francis S. Collins to stop funding these experiments and end the torture of innocent cats.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Dr. Francis S. Collins,

For decades, scientists at the University of Wisconsin–Madison have been performing cruel and useless experiments on innocent cats. These lovable animals are cut into, fitted with steel rods and bolts, and restrained and tested all in the name of learning how the human brain reacts to sounds. There are safe, humane ways to gain the same information using willing human subjects. The torture of these cats is horrific and completely unnecessary.

Your organization funds these experiments, and 30 cats will die from them every year as long as you continue to pay for it. If you cut the funding, the torment and needless deaths of dozens of cats can end now. I urge you to take the necessary action to end these experiments and encourage the scientists you fund to use humane methods to gain truly valuable knowledge about human health. Please be a voice for progress and show the scientific community that torturing and killing innocent animals is not the way to get funding.

Sincerely,
