No one needs to die for fashion


Skinned alive. That's the horrific fate of many of the millions of individual animals slaughtered for the Chinese fur trade. I'm not trying to shock you, but rabbits, chinchillas, foxes – and even dogs and cats just like those we share our homes with – are condemned to a miserable life and a violent death in China, a major supplier of fur sold throughout Europe and the world. PETA is leading the fight to save these and other animals who will be slaughtered for nothing more than vanity and greed. Stop the sale of manta ray leather boots

A manta ray can live to be 40 years old—if it’s not turned into a boot. These large, majestic fish are a favorite of divers lucky enough to see them, but they are also targeted by an unlikely foe: the leather industry. Tell Alibaba.com to stop selling manta ray products» Manta rays are disappearing from our oceans, in part because of fishing for their skin, gills, and cartilage. Despite the manta ray’s threatened status, manta ray “leather” fetches a high price. We recently discovered that Alibaba.com, one of the world’s largest commerce sites, sells boots and wallets made from rays. They should know better. Several years ago, Oceana activists joined other conservation groups to successfully petition Alibaba.com to stop selling shark products. We know they listen, so we’re asking you to reach out to them again. A fancy wallet is not worth the price of an ocean without rays.

Help Cows Skinned for Leather in India


Almost all leather in America is imported from foreign countries, and one of the top leather producers is, surprisingly, India. Six years after a PETA video exposé of it, the leather industry in India continues to subject cows and other animals to illegal cruelty during transport and slaughter. Cows and other animals are forced to endure transport in extremely crowded trucks, suffering broken bones and dehydration, before having their throats slit in full view of other animals and sometimes being skinned and dismembered while still conscious.

If you're wearing leather, you're probably wearing leather from India or China, and conditions for animals in China are at least as bad as they are in India. Even if your shoes were manufactured in Italy, the United States, or another such country, the raw materials (skins) are probably from India or China.

The horror behind the global leather trade

Every year, the global leather industry slaughters more than a billion animals. Most of the leather in the U.S. and Europe comes from India, China, and other countries that either have no animal welfare laws or have laws that go largely or completely unenforced. Six years after a PETA investigation into the Indian leather industry prompted the Indian government to promise to make improvements in the transport and slaughter conditions endured by cows and other animals killed for their skin, PETA investigators have found virtually no improvements—the animals are still grotesquely abused in ways that violate Indian law and shock the conscience of all kind people.

Blatant Crime : As India's own animal protection laws are blatantly ignored, unsanitary slaughterhouses continue to pollute the environment; unlicensed, illegal slaughterhouses remain in operation; and the widespread abuse of animals persists. In direct violation of the Constitution of India, cows, who are supposed to be sacred in India, are marched for days without food or water. Those who collapse from exhaustion have their eyes smeared with chili peppers and tobacco and their tails broken in an effort to keep them moving. Crammed into extremely crowded illegal transport trucks for the long journey to slaughter, many are trampled or gored during the ride.
Because India's animal transport and slaughter laws are not enforced, many of the animals used for leather are so sick and injured by the time they arrive at the slaughterhouse that they must be dragged inside. Once inside, their throats are cut open—often with dirty, blunt knives and in full view of one another—on floors that are covered with feces, blood, guts, and urine. Some animals are even skinned and dismembered while they are still conscious.

Chinese Torture : If you're wearing leather, it most likely came from China, because China is the world's leading exporter of leather. In addition to the cattle, sheep, and other animals who are turned into leather in China, an estimated 2 million cats and dogs in China are killed for their skins each year. Confined to wire cages in which they can barely move, these animals are routinely skinned alive and hacked apart, piece by piece, until they bleed to death. Many products made from the skins of dogs and cats are bought unknowingly by consumers, because the products are often intentionally mislabeled and do not accurately indicate their origin.

You Can Help : If you're wearing leather, you're wearing skin from a horribly abused animal. Even if your shoes were manufactured in Italy, the United States, or another country, the raw materials (skins) are probably from India, China, or another country with similarly non-existent animal welfare protections. The Truth About Leather: Wearing Cruelty

Although many people acknowledge and boycott the needlessness and cruelty involved in fur farming, leather still remains a tremendously popular clothing item with little to no resistance against it.
Just like fur, in order to get leather, an animal must first be killed and slaughtered. Unfortunately, many conscientious individuals are misled into believing leather is simply a "by-product" of the meat industry and there is no harm in buying it. Sadly, this is not the case.
It is estimated that leather makes up half of all profits of slaughterhouses that process cattle. Leather is a not a by-product, it is a co-product. Because the profit margin is rather small on the sale of animal flesh (relatively speaking), most cattle exploiting companies are dependent upon the sale of hides to remain in business.
Many of us who care about the wellbeing of animals don't eat meat because we don't want to put money in the pockets of people who kill animals for profit, yet many of us still support these horrific industries by buying leather.

Most leather comes from the skin of animals raised for meat, but virtually all dairy cows meet the same end, as well, when their milk production slows down and they are no longer seen as profitable to keep. Calfskin suede is exactly what it sounds like. This is the skin of mostly young male dairy calves. These poor calves have been taken from their mothers within days of being born and confined to tiny wooden boxes, where they're raised to be veal. To buy calfskin suede supports the terrible treatment of veal calves, the inherent abuse of dairy farming, and the entire animal exploiting meat industry. A growing percentage of leather on the market in the US is imported from India and China. And in China, many animal welfare laws do not exist. And if they do exist, they are simply not enforced, leaving millions of animals to suffer horrible deaths so their skin may be turned into a cheap pair of shoes.
In many states of India it is actually illegal to slaughter cows because Hindus honor them as sacred beings. Cattle purchasers will buy impoverished Hindu families' cows from them with the promises that their beloved cows will be taken care of. But instead they death march them to Bangladesh, Pakistan or an Indian state where cow slaughter is permitted.

For cows who have been treated as the most honored member of a family, to all of a sudden be forced to walk potentially hundreds of miles, is more than most can bear. As cows falter and fall, or are too sick to walk, the wranglers will rub hot chili powder in their eyes or break the bones in their tails to motivate them to keep going. For those who make the distance to the slaughterhouse, they will have their throats slit while fully conscious. The thought of an animal enduring such a nightmare so someone can have -- what they perceive as -- a fashionable bag, jacket, pair of shoes or furniture covering, is too much for me. When comparing the treatment of animals on fur farms to that of animals slaughtered for meat and leather, it is shocking that we don't all do more to boycott this cruel and needless industry.
