| 3 Reasons Why Leather Is So Disgusting
Did you know that some people actually wear the skin of dead animals for things like clothes, shoes, and belts? It’s true. They call the skin “leather,” and here are three reasons why it’s SO yucky!
1. Stealing an animal’s skin is cruel.
This one’s pretty obvious, right? Most of the leather in the U.S. comes from India. A lot of times, people force the cows there to walk hundreds of miles in the heat with no food or water.
People even break the cows’ tails and rub chili peppers in their eyes to make them keep moving. Then they’re killed for their skin.
2. Leather has dangerous chemicals on it.
Making leather hurts animals, and it’s also very dangerous to our bodies and the environment.
Skin from dead animals rots, which means that it starts to break down like any living being who dies. To make sure that this doesn’t happen, companies put lots of poisonous chemicals on it. These get into the soil and water supplies, putting the people around them in danger. Many of these people are just kids.
3. It’s someone’s skin!
It doesn’t take a genius to realize that wearing someone else’s skin is wrong—and just plain gross.
Plus, cows aren’t the only animals who are killed for their skin. In China, where a lot of the world’s leather comes from, some dogs are killed so that their skin can be turned into leather shoes, belts, and other things, too. In south africa, ostriches are killed so that their “fancy” skin can be used by fashion designers around the world. There’s absolutely no reason to wear leather (or any other animal parts!), since there are tons of different vegan materials out there—like cotton and polyester. All you have to do is ask your parents to double check the labels on your clothes before they buy them, in order to make sure that you’re not getting animal skins.

where does leather come From?
When you get ready for school in the morning, do you think about where your leather belt came from or who was killed for your leather shoes? Eight-year-old Rebecca did, and she decided to find out the truth. What she discovered was shocking: It’s not only cows who suffer for clothing and accessories—many cats, dogs and other animals are killed for leather, too! 🐶 Most leather comes from countries like India and China, where there are few or no rules protecting animals. This means that many cows and other animals used for leather have their horns removed, their tails cut off, and their skin branded with burning hot tools, all without painkillers. Some animals are even skinned alive. Luckily, there are lots of cute, comfortable, affordable materials that aren’t made of leather (or any animal skins) like cotton, flannel, polyester, and other cruelty-free fibers. So the next time your parents take you shopping, check clothing labels to make sure you’re not wearing anybody.

Clothing: Supporting animal slaughterOther animals (let's not forget that we are also animals) are used as resources to provide materials for our clothing. Sheep and cows are bred and slaughtered; foxes, mink and rabbits caged and killed, wild animals shot or trapped, to make clothes and shoes from their skin and fur. All animals (human or not) need to protect themselves from the elements, but this doesn't provide justification for depriving another animal of his or her freedom and life, especially when there are so many animal-free alternatives available to us. Leather: wearing someone else's skin
Many of us have seen shocking images of foxes or minks suffering in cages on fur farms or being gassed, electrocuted or skinned alive. As a result many people now reject fur. However, leather and sheepskin continue to be in high demand. Rarely do we question the fact that leather and sheepskin are also the skin of an animal, which has been tanned and treated with a cocktail of chemicals to avoid decomposition and obtain the desired colour. While many people would think twice before wearing fur, they make an exception for leather or sheepskin because it is usually thought to be a 'by-product' of the meat industry. In reality, they are far from being by-products: paying for leather and sheepskin adds substantially to the slaughterhouse value of the dead animal and financially supports the meat industry. The multimillion pound leather industry is such big business it would sustain itself even if the meat industry were to end tomorrow.

Fur: pelts belong to the animals
During 'fur' production a significant number of animals, whether raised in cages on fur farms or trapped in the wild, are skinned alive. Approximately 35 animals are killed and skinned to make a single coat and the 'fur' industry currently kills around 30 million animals a year. The use of fur is now widely rejected due to raised public awareness of the misery suffered by animals on fur farms, and their agonising deaths: by gassing, electrocution or being simply skinned alive. However, we need to apply those same arguments for the rejection of any item of clothing made from animal skin or hair, such as leather and wool, since every case involves an individual sentient being's exploitation.
Watch Animal Equality's mink farm investigation in Spain (2010):
Wool
Wool is an animal product which is widely consumed and seldom questioned, in spite of the large amount of suffering involved in the raising and exploitation of sheep for wool production. Wool consists of a fine, long and elastic protein called keratin. Before we began exploiting sheep, they used to produce only enough wool to protect themselves from the cold, as wild sheep do not need shearing. However, domestic sheep today have been selectively bred to produce more wool than is natural. This selective breeding has resulted in a multitude of illnesses related to their excessive amount of hair, such as deaths from overheating and flystrike and as well as the pain caused to them during shearing. Workers immobilise sheep during shearing in order to obtain every possible inch of wool from their bodies, ignoring any stress or injuries they suffer as a result. Sheep are individuals with their own interests and desires, not producers of scarves, jumpers, gloves and coats.

Alternatives These days there is an endless supply of clothes which aren’t made from animals. It's easy to buy products such as shoes, jackets, jumpers and scarves made from synthetic materials or natural plant fibres such as cotton, hemp or linen. Increasingly, synthetic materials are being recycled with companies now selling clothes, shoes and bags made out of recycled plastic bottles.

the leather industry
Cows and goats are fully conscious when their throats are cut on the streets of Dhaka. This cow had to watch another cow writhe in pain and bleed to death before meeting the same fate. Leather can be made from cows, pigs, goats, and sheep; exotic animals such as alligators, ostriches, and kangaroos; and even dogs and cats, who are slaughtered for their meat and skin in China, which exports their skins around the world. Because leather is normally not labeled, you never really know where (or whom) it came from. Most leather comes from developing countries such as India and China, where animal welfare laws are either non-existent or not enforced. In India, a PETA investigation found that workers break cows’ tails and rub chili peppers and tobacco into their eyes in order to force them to get up and walk after they collapse from exhaustion on the way to the slaughterhouse. In the U.S., many of the millions of cows and other animals who are killed for their skin endure the horrors of factory farming—extreme crowding and deprivation as well as castration, branding, tail-docking, and dehorning—all without any painkillers. At slaughterhouses, animals routinely have their throats cut and some are even skinned and dismembered while they are still conscious.
Buying leather directly contributes to factory farms and slaughterhouses because skin is the most economically important byproduct of the meat industry. Leather is also no friend of the environment, as it shares responsibility for all the environmental destruction caused by the meat industry as well as the pollution caused by the toxins used in tanning. With every pair of leather shoes that you buy, you sentence an animal to a lifetime of suffering. Instead, you can choose from hundreds of styles of nonleather shoes, clothing, belts, bags, and wallets. Check out PETA’s cruelty-free clothing guide for great tips on where to find fashionable yet compassionate clothing. Fashion should be fun, not fatal!

| leather and factory farming
Most leather comes from cows raised for both beef and milk. Cows raised for beef spend most of their lives on extremely crowded feedlots. Studies have found that ranchers maximize profits by giving each steer less than 20 square feet of living space—the equivalent of putting 12 half-ton steers in a typical American bedroom! The animals are subjected to painful procedures such as castration, branding (which causes third-degree burns), tail-docking, and dehorning—all without painkillers. They are deprived of veterinary care and exposed to the elements without any shelter. These breathing, thinking, feeling beings, who feel pain just as humans do, suffer immensely. They are also fed a steady diet of hormones to fatten them and antibiotics to keep them alive in extremely poor living conditions. At the end of their short, dismal lives, cows are jam-packed into metal trucks, where, confused and terrified, they suffer from injury, weather extremes, crowded conditions, hunger, and thirst. In the winter, cows routinely arrive for slaughter frozen to the sides of transport trucks, frozen to truck bottoms in their own feces and urine, and injured or dead from the journey.
Frequently collapsing during their hellish ride, many cows arrive at the slaughterhouse unable to walk out of the back of the transport truck, so they are dragged off the truck with chains—often breaking bones when they hit the ground. Every year, tens of millions of cows are stunned, hung upside-down, bled to death, and skinned in slaughterhouses. The federal Humane Slaughter Act stipulates that cows should be stunned by a mechanical blow to the head and rendered unconscious before they are strung up, but the high speed of the assembly lines—which often process up to 400 cows per hour—often results in improper stunning. Each year, millions of cows are skinned and dismembered while they are still kicking and crying out in terror. Buying leather directly contributes to factory farms and slaughterhouses because skin is the most economically important byproduct of the meat industry.
