Rodeos
Countless animals have paid with their lives to satisfy humans’ desire to play cowboy in events such as calf roping, bull riding, steer wrestling, and bronc riding. Cattle and horses may be zapped with electric “hot shots” so that they’ll charge out of the chute, calves’ necks are twisted as they’re violently slammed onto the ground, and horses are viciously spurred into bucking. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) rules allow the shocking of horses who are slow to come out of the chute—participants call them “stallers.” “I could hit them with a stick or poke them—I could poke holes in ’em, but that would hurt ’em. Or, I could just touch ’em with the Hot-Shot.”
—Rodeo participant on how to “encourage” horses to leave the chute
Doping
To make bulls stronger and more aggressive, they may be injected with anabolic steroids. Some riders give them anti-inflammatories as well.
“Oh, I think damn near everybody’s doing it.”
—Rodeo participant on the use of steroids in bull riding
A rider at the 2013 Calgary Stampede was suspended after two steers were found to have two different drugs in their system. Tellingly, it’s not the animals’ welfare that officials were concerned about. The rules state that animals are to be free of drug residue because the competition is designated as “terminal,” meaning that the champion steer will be killed for food.
The End of the Trail
Animals used in rodeos have suffered fatal injuries, including broken backs and necks, heart attacks, and aneurysms. Those who manage to make it through unscathed are given little time to rest or recuperate. They are loaded into trucks, hauled to the next event, and forced to participate over and over again. When they become too old or worn out to continue, “retirement” is often a one-way trip to the slaughterhouse.

| The late Dr. C.G. Haber, a veterinarian who spent 30 years as a federal meat inspector, saw many animals from rodeos sold to the slaughterhouses he inspected. He described seeing animals “with six to eight ribs broken from the spine and, at times, puncturing the lungs,” in addition to “as much as two to three gallons of free blood accumulated under the detached skin.
Charreadas
Mexican rodeos, called charreadas, are particularly egregious. Two of the events involve deliberately tripping horses, including the manganas a pie, in which three mounted charros (riders) chase a wild mare while one tries to rope her by the front legs and cause her to trip and fall, and the piales en lienzo, in which a rider on horseback ropes and trips a wild mare by the hind legs. In el paso de la muerte, charros attempt to leap from their own horses onto the bare back of a wild mare then ride her until she becomes exhausted and stops bucking. This is done while three other mounted charros chase her around the arena. During the terna en el ruedo, which is similar to team roping in a typical American rodeo, three riders must rope a bull as quickly as possible—one ropes him by the neck and one by the hind legs, while the third ties his legs together.
In coleadero, or steer tailing, riders grab a steer by the tail, wrap his tail around their boot and stirrup and attempt to force him to the ground. The flesh on the tail may be torn off the underlying bone an excruciating injury called “degloving.” Unsanctioned charreadas, also called coleaderos (because steer tailing is the most common event), take place in rural areas all over the Southwest. If there’s some open land and no authorities are around, coleaderos are often set up. Word spreads through social media, and there are no rules.
What You Can Do
If a rodeo comes to your town, contact local authorities, write letters to sponsors, leaflet at the gate, or hold a demonstration. Contact PETA for help. Another way to ban rodeos is to work to institute a state or local ban on calf roping, the event in which cruelty is most easily documented. Since many rodeo circuits require calf roping, eliminating it can result in the overall elimination of rodeo shows.

Charreada: Bone-Breaking Cruelty
Every year throughout Mexico and the American Southwest, horses and cows are injured or killed during charreadas or charrerias (Mexican rodeos). The charreada has followed much the same historical track as the American rodeo: Once a contest among charros (horse riders) to show off riding and roping skills on horses, bulls, and calves, the charreada has degenerated into what is essentially a series of bullying circus acts showcasing “skills” that no rancher would ever use.
Torturous Spectacle
The typical charreada features a number of events.1 The “step of death” involves leaping from the back of one horse onto the back of a wild horse and riding until the animal becomes exhausted from trying to buck the person off.2 “Roman riding,” or the “death jump,” calls for a charro to straddle two horses and force them to gallop toward and leap over a parked car.3 During the terna en el ruedo, the equivalent of team roping in an American rodeo, riders must rope a bull as quickly as possible; one rider ropes the animal by the neck and two others by the hind legs.”4 A few municipalities and the state of Nebraska have banned an event called “steer-tailing” (coleadero). In this event, a charro on horseback pursues a steer, grabs the steer’s tail, wraps it around his boot and stirrup, then veers off, slamming the steer to the ground.5,6 When the sheriff’s office in Jefferson County, Colo., was alerted to possible cruelty-to-animals offenses following steer-tailing at a charreada, officials investigated. According to a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, “Seven of those cattle had been de-gloved,” meaning that the flesh had been ripped away from their tails, “and we had four that had bone or limb injuries—a couple had broken bones, two others were lame.” Two of the animals had to be euthanized, and the charreada promoter was issued a summons for failing to provide veterinary care.7
“Horse-tripping” is the focus of two events: the manganas, in which horses are roped by their front legs and yanked to the ground, and the piales, in which the animals are roped by their back legs and crash to the ground.8 Veterinarian Steve White, who witnessed a Nebraska charreada, told the Omaha City Council that horse-tripping can cause rope burns, dislocations, torn muscles, and broken legs. “Tradition should never take precedence over the welfare of animals,” he said.9 Horse-tripping has been banned in a handful of states, including California, Maine, New Mexico, Texas, and, most recently, Arizona.10,11
Some charreadas also include bullfighting, other rodeo events, and illegal activities such as cockfighting.12
What You Can Do
If you plan to visit the American Southwest or Mexico, tell your travel agent that you oppose cruelty to animals and refuse to attend a charreada. If you are aware that a charreada will be taking place in a certain city, send a letter of complaint to the mayor. Start a campaign to ban horse-tripping and steer-tailing in your area. For more information about these activities and how to get them banned, contact this organization:

| Rodeos
The immorality of rodeos extends to the arrogance of the riders and their attitude to the animals, and to the way the audience is demeaned by watching such a tawdry spectacle. Veterinarian, on attending an Australian rodeo Rodeos are a cruel spectator sport, condemned by all animal protection organisations, in which bulls, horses and sometimes other animals are physically provoked into displaying 'wild' behaviour by the use of such devices as spurs, electric prods and flank straps. Rodeo animals suffer many kinds of injuries, and are sometimes killed or have to be destroyed. Due to cruelty, traditional rodeo events are banned in Britain and in parts of Europe and the United States. [1]
Bull Riding
Riding spurs. Image courtesy of Jo-Anne McArthur / We Animals / www.weanimals.org Bull riding involves releasing a bull from an enclosure called a bucking chute, and the rider holds on by one hand for as long as possible while the bull attempts to 'buck' them off. A flank strap is pulled tightly around the bull's sensitive organs, which makes him buck unnaturally when released from the chute. In addition, rodeo assistants routinely use hand held electric prods on the bulls as the chute gate opens — and so further driving the bulls to buck wildly as they emerge. A Chicago rodeo organiser is quoted as saying, "Bulls today have been bred to be docile. You can't make an animal buck if you don't do something to it".
Calf/steer roping
Contestants on horseback must rope a calf (usually within 60 seconds), dismount and throw the calf, then any three of its hooves must be tied together and held for five seconds.

Calves can suffer broken legs, even broken necks, and research has shown that even though they get to their feet and leave the arena apparently unharmed, calves can still be suffering from internal haemorrhaging which is not visible without an autopsy. These young animals with soft bones and still developing bodies, should never be subjected to such harsh treatment.

| Steers are usually required to be roped within 90 seconds. Injuries include bruising, broken limbs and horns, as well as stress caused by brutal handling. Injuries in this event can cause an animal to be destroyed (out of sight of the crowd).
Team roping
In this event two riders rope a horned steer, one at the head, the other at the hind legs, again usually in a maximum of 90 seconds. The difficulties of two riders roping simultaneously may lead to the steer being pulled in different directions at the same time.
Steer wrestling or bulldogging
The contestant must jump off the horse and grab the steer by the horns, stopping it and twisting its neck to bring it down. The animal can sustain broken and splintered horns in this event. Neck twisting can cause considerable pain, and also spinal injury.
Calf and steer wrestling. Image courtesy of Jo-Anne McArthur / We Animals / www.weanimals.org Bareback and saddle bronc riding
In these bucking events, the contestant attempts to stay on a horse for eight seconds, holding on with one hand. A flank straps and spurs are used to make the horse buck. The American term of "saddle bronc" riding is commonly used.

What you can do
Click here to sign the pledge to 'Say No to Rodeos', and ask your family and friends to do the same! Call for an end to one of the cruellest rodeo events: calf roping. Write to your local MP, as well as your local newspaper, stating the facts about the cruelty of rodeos and why they should be banned (Note: Rodeos are permitted in all States, and the NT, but not in the ACT). Report rodeo sponsors. Rodeos would not be financially viable without sponsors. Animals Australia has already convinced many Australian companies, including Telstra and Kmart, to withdraw their sponsorship of rodeos in recognition of the endemic animal welfare problems. We can persuade other sponsors to make a similar ethical commitment, but we depend on you to report rodeo sponsors to us. Send this page to people you know who have attended rodeos, so that they too will understand the cruelty behind this barbaric 'entertainment'.

[1] In the UK, the Protection of Animals Act made traditional rodeos illegal in England, Scotland and Wales. The roping of an unbroken horse or untrained bull is illegal. Also prohibited is the "wrestling, fighting, or struggling with any untrained bull". However, competitive horsemanship, barrel racing, and non-traditional rodeo events may still be allowed.
