Welcome to consumer movement SumOfUs! Could you do us a quick favor and reply to this message, just to say "Hi"? Sending us that simple word once will let your email provider know that we're welcome in your inbox as we continue to build a better world, together.

Doesn’t it seem like every time you turn on the TV or log onto Facebook, big business is once again pushing an agenda that maximizes profits over workers’ rights, consumers rights, and basic human rights?

Whether it’s earning record profits while the rest of us languish in debt or causing environmental crises and then covering them up; whether it's working employees to death or wiggling out of every tax and regulation the government can manage to pass; or... The list just goes on and on! You name it, and corporations are behind it. And instead of being held accountable, CEOs are getting richer by the second while the rest of us hope to make it to our next paycheck!

But the world doesn’t have to be this way. Because we have a secret: We own the corporations that are causing all these problems. They rely on us to buy their products. They count on us to buy their stock. They need us to work for them. Without us, these massive corporations have no power.

That’s where we -- the SumOfUs -- come in. By taking action this week, you have joined a new movement of individuals from all over the world, uniting together to demand that corporations put people over profits.

Here’s what we stand for:

Governments that answer to citizens – not corporations;
Fair treatment of workers and the right of every human being to make a living, safely and ethically, for themselves and their families;
The right of ordinary consumers to buy products that are produced and marketed ethically, sustainably and transparently;
The right of communities to manage and protect their own environment and natural resources;
Business models that put people and the planet first instead of being driven by short-sighted greed.
Here's what we've done:

We stood up to the Daily Mail and helped transgendered groups ensure better coverage in its pages;
We helped workers in Chicago buy their factory when it was about to be sold off for scrap;
We created a massive thank-you card to Starbucks when it was under attack for supporting gay marriage, helping kick off a wave of public pro-LGBT actions by corporations;
We helped defund the climate change-denying Heartland Institute so much that it was forced to cancel its annual climate denial conference;
We helped fund striking Walmart workers, ensuring that their families would still be fed while they walked off their jobs in protest;
We brought beekeepers to the Independent Garden Center Show to spread the word about bee-killing pesticides;
If you, like us, are fed up with corporate power over our lives, and want to be a part of a movement to hold corporations accountable for their actions, then you’ve found the right home. Please help us out by taking a moment to select "Always display images from SumOfUs.org" at the top of this email. Approximately once a week -- sometimes less, but let’s be honest, corporations aren’t getting any less evil -- we’ll send you an email with something you can do to stand up for people over profit. Together we’ll build campaigns and pressure major corporations and win real victories that improve real people’s lives.

We are the SumOfUs, and together, we can build a just society for all.

SumOfUs is a worldwide movement of people like you, working together to hold corporations accountable for their actions and forge a new, sustainable path for our global economy.

The fennel flower Trash x Paul Ferris, SumOfUs.org <us@sumofus.org> Jan 10 to me Nestlé is claiming that it owns a natural cure that's been used for over 1,000 years. Tell Nestlé to stop trying to patent the natural cure-all, nigella sativa. Sign the petitionShare on Facebook. Jaime, Nigella sativa -- more commonly known as fennel flower -- has been used as a cure-all remedy for over a thousand years. It treats everything from vomiting to fevers to skin diseases, and has been widely available in impoverished communities across the Middle East and Asia. But now Nestlé is claiming to own it, and filing patent claims around the world to try and take control over the natural cure of the fennel flower and turn it into a costly private drug. Tell Nestlé: Stop trying to patent a natural cure! In a paper published last year, Nestlé scientists claimed to “discover” what much of the world has known for millennia: that nigella sativa extract could be used for “nutritional interventions in humans with food allergy”. But instead of creating an artificial substitute, or fighting to make sure the remedy was widely available, Nestlé is attempting to create a nigella sativa monopoly and gain the ability to sue anyone using it without Nestlé’s permission. Nestlé has filed patent applications -- which are currently pending -- around the world. Prior to Nestlé's outlandish patent claim, researchers in developing nations such as Egypt and Pakistan had already published studies on the same curative powers Nestlé is claiming as its own. And Nestlé has done this before -- in 2011, it tried to claim credit for using cow’s milk as a laxative, despite the fact that such knowledge had been in Indian medical texts for a thousand years. Don’t let Nestlé turn a traditional cure into a corporate cash cow. This isn't surprising, considering Nestle has a long track record of not caring about ethics. After all, this is the corporation that poisoned its milk with melamine, purchases cocoa from plantations that use child slave labor, and launched a breast milk substitute campaign in the 1970s that contributed to the suffering and deaths of thousands of babies from poor communities. But we also know that Nestlé is sensitive to public outcry, and that it's been beaten at the patent game before. If we act fast, we can put enough pressure on Nestlé to get it to drop its patent plans before they harm anyone -- but if we want any chance at affecting Nestlé's decision, we have to speak out now, while its patent claims are still under review. Thanks for all you do, Paul and the team at SumOfUs.org

Monsanto's biggest secret exposed Trash x Paul Ferris, SumOfUs.org Januay 18 2014

 to me In just one week, a brave group of Monsanto shareholders are calling on the company to come clean on the risks associated with GMOs. With Monsanto figthing to defeat the vote, these shareholders desperately need our support to unleash a plan to put the retirement funds that invest OUR money in the spotlight, and push them to support this crucial vote. Can you chip in just $3 now to push Monsanto to come clean on GMOs? Donate now Jaime, Monsanto: it's one of the greatest corporate scandals of our time. This mega-corporation has paid off our politicians, taken over our regulators, and bullied public opponents into submission while it silently monopolizes our food system with its genetically-engineered products. Now a brave group of Monsanto shareholders are making a stand -- the crucial vote is only one week away, and they desperately need our support to force Monsanto to face up to the risks associated with GMOs. Monsanto has been keeping us and its shareholders in the dark for too long -- this shareholder resolution tells Monsanto to be open with the risks of GMO. This is a serious shareholder proposal, and some big, credible investors are already supportive. But many of the biggest investment and retirement funds that invest OUR money are lining up to vote with Monsanto bosses against transparency. These big institutional investors think that no one's watching them -- and unless we do something now, they'll be right. Together, we can make sure shareholders know what's up and that we're watching -- and secure their votes against Monsanto's corporate racket. The vote happens in just one week. We understand if you can't, but if just 5,000 of us can chip in $3 now, we can launch our urgent campaign to tell Monsanto to come clean on GMOs. Here's just some of what we could do if we all chip in now: Secure advertising in Monsanto's home town of St Louis, Missouri, so that shareholders hear our message as they arrive to vote and know we're watching Send organizers to St Louis to raise a media storm outside the shareholder meeting with creative tactics, to make sure the public knows what's happening Buy a small, strategic stake in Monsanto -- so that we can speak out as shareholders ourselves and demand they act This shareholder resolution is legitimate, serious business -- Harrington Investments Inc. is telling Monsanto to come clean, and they need other big shareholders to back them. If the resolution gets a high vote, it would send a very clear signal that Monsanto should disclose the risks associated with GMOs: including contamination of non-GMO crops, damage to "non-target organisms" like bees and other pollinators, and soil contamination. But Monsanto's board is refusing to back the proposal, despite claiming to be transparent and even though the resolution doesn't require them to disclose any proprietary information. Meanwhile, the company has spent more than $15 million is California and Washington alone to defeat proposals to label GMO food -- a measure that over 90% of Americans support. Can you chip in just $3 now to stand up to Monsanto and support these brave shareholders in their campaign? We know you might not be able to, but if you can we really appreciate your support. Big institutional shareholders invest the funds of people like us -- but too often they vote against our own interests and cozy up to management. It's only when we publicly hold them to account that we can change this. We're already reaching out to big Monsanto shareholders to call on them to act -- but we need to be able to tell them that we've got the whole SumOfUs community behind us, and we need to be able to show them that we're ready to make a media storm at the shareholders' meeting to hold them to account. We know what we need to do: get institutional investors to speak to the expert advisors to win their support, show thse investors we'll be there to hold them to account, and to keep piling the pressure on with national and international media coverage -- but we can't do it unless we all come together to make it happen. If we don't, then Monsanto's shareholders will know that no one is watching when they vote down this crucial resolution on GMO transparency. Can you chip in just $3 now to fund our campaign to tell Monsanto to come clean on the risks associated with GMOs? This is the only shot we'll get to directly change the direction of Monsanto this year. Thanks for all you do, Paul, Lisa, Johnny and the rest of us.
