Forgive Me

Father,

There are no words to express how filthy I feel every time I break Your heart. The guilt and the shame are overwhelming! Lord, I need Your touch right now. I am so sick of being “born again” and still doing the things I hate doing. Like Paul, I am conflicted. “For I do not do what I want, but do the very thing that I hate.” (Romans 7:15) I am so sorry! Father, I ask for Your forgiveness right now. I am shocked that my life has come to a point where even some sins don’t affect me at all. Father, I have some hard layers on my heart that need peeling. Please give me a 100% heart of flesh.  The hardness is a barrier between us that I can’t stand! I love You and I am so regrettably sorry for my selfish actions. Thank You for Your forgiveness, Lord. Without forgiveness I am nothing. With Your forgiveness I am whole again. I praise Your Name! In the name of YEHUSHUA. Amen.

For Salvation (How to become a Christian) Heavenly Father, in the Name of Jesus, I present myself to You. I pray and ask Jesus to be Lord over my life. I believe it in my heart, so I say it with my mouth: 'Jesus has been raised from the dead.' This moment, I make Him the Lord over my life. Jesus, come into my heart. I believe this moment that I am saved. I say it now: 'I am reborn. I am a Christian. I am a child of Almighty God.' Amen Now, thank God for making you His child. You have just inherited the kingdom of God!

For Healing(How to pray for healing) Father, I am your child. I am filled with your Spirit. I believe that Jesus bore my sickness and carried my diseases, and I believe that by His stripes I was healed 2,000 years ago. Right now, I accept that fact by faith. I believe that I am healed now, in the Name of Jesus. Amen (or, use the following, or both combined...) Satan, I speak to you in Jesus’ Name and I proclaim that your principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in heavenly places are bound from operating against me in any way. I am loosed from your assignment. I am the property of Almighty God and I give you no place in me. I dwell in the secret place of the Most High God and I abide under the shadow of the Almighty, whose power no foe can withstand. Now Father, I believe Your Word that says, ‘The angel of the Lord encamps round about me and delivers me from every evil work. No evil shall befall me, no plague or calamity shall come near my dwelling.’ I confess that the Word abides in me and it is life and medicine to my flesh. The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus operates in me, making me free from the law of sin and death. I hold fast to my confession of Your Word and I stand immovable, knowing that health and healing are mine now, in Jesus' Name. Amen

Prayer of Forgiveness: A Valuable Gift

A prayer of forgiveness is something we all seek at some point in life. Forgiveness is a valuable gift that is neither easily obtained, nor easily given. Forgiveness is essential for life; it frees us from past wrongs and gives us hope for the future. It is for forgiveness sake that Jesus Christ came to earth to die for mankind.

Prayer of Forgiveness: Made Possible by Jesus Christ

The prayer of forgiveness is a prayer that is offered up to God. Though we may directly hurt each other, all of our trespasses ultimately hurt God. You may wonder how this is possible. How can our shortcomings hurt the omnipotent Creator of the universe? Does God even care? In Genesis 6; we find that God Himself actually grieved over all the wrongs that man had inflicted upon each other: "Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And He was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart" (Genesis 6:5-6).

All knowing, God grieves even at the mere thought of evil. Thus, ultimate forgiveness must also come from God. However, because of His justice, forgiveness cannot be freely given. Every wrong must be accounted for in order for God to be a just judge. Jesus Christ died on the cross at Calvary in our place so that our sins may be forgiven. His suffering paid for our transgressions. "For this is My blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins" (Matthew 26:28).

In His love, God knew that our conscience needed to be freed from guilt and condemnation. He knew that forgiveness of sins was our greatest need. In the ultimate act of love, God not only suffered the pain of our wrongs, but also paid for their consequences in order that we may have forgiveness offered to us when we sin. All we need to do is to accept His free gift of forgiveness.

Prayer of Forgiveness: Ask God for Forgiveness

Perhaps you have stumbled upon this web page looking for a prayer of forgiveness to soothe a tormented soul. Or maybe you are struggling with trying to forgive another for deeply hurting you. For all who accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, forgiveness has been freely given. If we acknowledge our wrongs and ask for forgiveness, God will forgive us - no questions asked: "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).

If we reject Jesus, in essence, we reject God's gift of forgiveness. We are in fact saying that we do not wish to be reconciled with God (1 John 1:10). Though it is our free choice to not accept forgiveness from God, we will ultimately be accountable for all the sins we have committed at the end of this life. It is God's deep desire to be reconciled with you. "For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). If you desire to be truly forgiven, consider what Jesus said and sincerely accept Him as your Lord and Savior. You will be forgiven and God will begin a transforming work in your life.

Prayer of Forgiveness: Receive a New Life
The prayer of forgiveness gives us a new hope and a new beginning. All our sins are wiped away by God. "For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more" (Hebrews 8:12).

If you understand that you are a sinner, and you believe that Jesus Christ came as the one and only Redeemer of sin, then you understand the prayer of forgiveness. The question is – are you ready to implement the prayer, by receiving God’s gift of His Son, Jesus Christ? If so, believe in Christ, repent of your sins, and commit the rest of your life to Him as Lord:

"Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38).

If you decided to receive Jesus today, welcome to God's family. Now, as a way to grow closer to Him, the Bible tells us to follow up on our commitment.
Get baptized as commanded by Christ.
Tell someone else about your new faith in Christ.
Spend time with God each day. It does not have to be a long period of time. Just develop the daily habit of praying to Him and reading His Word. Ask God to increase your faith and your understanding of the Bible.
Seek fellowship with other followers of Jesus. Develop a group of believing friends to answer your questions and support you.
Find a local gathering where you can worship God.

Father, I know that I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from YOU. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life toward YOU. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. obsession : a thought that you can’t get out of your mind. When religion and spirituality are central in a person’s life, obsessive-compulsive symptoms tend to be noticed there.  The term, scruples is often used to describe obsessive-compulsive disorder manifested in religious ways. For Catholics, going to confession every time a simple mistake is made because of a fear of hell, is a scruple.

Psychological Healing in the Catholic Mystic Tradition

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Catholic Psychotherapy  

IN ORDER to provide a remedy for something, it is necessary to understand its cause and its purpose. So let’s begin there.

Understanding Causality

we know from scientific research that the brain and the mind have a mutual influence on each other and that even though mental disorders may have a material cause in brain neurochemistry they can also have a final cause in psychological activity. Think, for a moment about the building in which you may now be sitting. We can ask, “What is the cause of this building?” just as you might ask about the cause of OCD. Well, in his philosophy, Aristotle (Physics, ii, 3) described several different types of causes that are relevant even today.

The material cause refers to “that out of which a thing comes to be and persists.” In this sense, for example, the steel and concrete and glass—the materials—are the cause of a building.

The formal cause refers to the form—or plan, or pattern—by which the essence of something is stated. In this sense, the design and blueprints are the cause of a building.

The efficient cause refers to “the primary source of the change or coming to rest.” In this sense, the construction company is the cause of a building.

The final cause refers to “that for the sake of which” a thing is done. In this sense, the owner’s desire is the cause of a building. As Aristotle himself said, “it follows that there are several causes of the same thing.” In psychological practice this means that symptoms of OCD, for example, which, in scientific [1] medical language, might be “caused” by a chemical imbalance in the brain (material cause) can, at the same time, be “caused” by repressed anger (final cause). Psychologically, locating and treating this unconscious final cause of the symptoms can be the most critical aspect of the treatment because it can have a curative effect on the other causes as well. Treating only the material cause, however—as if it were the rational and only cause—will leave the final cause untreated and free to continue exerting its harmful influence.

Unconscious Guilt

In this regard, psychological research into early infant development has shown that experiences of rage, and subsequent feelings of guilt, happen to us all right from early infancy. Every parent will make mistakes in empathic bonding with a child, and every child will feel emotionally hurt by those mistakes and will crave the satisfaction of revenge: to hurt the other “as I have been hurt.”

Most children manage to work through this guilt intuitively and have no lasting problems from it. Some children, however, because of subtle, guilt-producing family dynamics, will grow up lacking a social structure of deep faith and trust in God’s mercy, and will feel so guilty about having this desire for revenge that they try to hide it from others—and from themselves.

Moreover, these children will more likely than not also find that puberty becomes a troubling time. Lacking clear and honest explanations of sexuality, and lacking guidance about and protection from sexual feelings, budding adolescents can develop agonizing guilt about their sexuality.

Therefore, both psychological theory and clinical practice lead us to the understanding that OCD, at its core, is a neurotic way of coping with feelings of guilt. It’s similar to Lady Macbeth, in Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, crying, “Out, damned spot!” as she tries compulsively to rub the stain of Duncan’s murder from her hands.[2]

Now, unlike Lady Macbeth, you may not have actually killed someone, but the unconscious motive for your compulsive rituals can be found in obsessive thoughts or mental images of hostility and violence because someone has injured you, insulted you, obstructed you, or hurt you in some other emotional, physical, or material way. Moreover, this hurt is more often than not a matter of what someone has failed to do for you, rather than what a person has done to you.[3]

 

To someone untrained in the psychology of the unconscious, it may seem difficult to understand this logically, but whatever you are afraid of doing is what some part of you unconsciously desires.[4] Maybe you have to check the stove in endless repetition to make sure you have turned it off, because you’re afraid of starting a fire. Well, unconsciously, some part of you probably desires to set the whole house on fire to get revenge for having been cheated by someone. Maybe you have to wash your hands in endless repetition because they feel unclean. Well, unconsciously, maybe some part of you probably desires to use those hands to strangle someone who has neglected your needs in some way. Maybe you have to keep checking to make sure you backed up the data on the computer at work because you’re afraid the work project might fail. Well, unconsciously, maybe some part of you probably desires the project to fail because you’re unhappy with your job—and on and on it goes.

 

Most likely you don’t like to talk about these thoughts and fantasies, or the suppressed desire for revenge—perhaps going all the way back to infancy—that drives them, because you find them so repugnant that you want to neutralize them before they reach full conscious awareness.[5]

 

AN EXAMPLE

Transient thoughts (that is, fantasies) of hurting someone are actually very common—so common, in fact, that they could be called “normal” human responses to feeling irritated by someone.

For example, a mother holding her infant while standing at the edge of Niagara Falls could suddenly think of throwing the child into the water. Now, such a thought could be an unconscious reaction to the mother’s irritation at the responsibility of caring for her new child.

But does having the thought mean that the mother is actually in danger of carrying it out? Not at all. The thought, like any fantasy, is just the result of a juxtaposition of images in the moment—the water and the infant—that suggest the intellectual possibility that the infant could be thrown into the water.

So, if the mother were to interpret the fantasy, she could say to herself, “Ah, yes, a child is a lot of responsibility, isn’t she? Yet, with Christ’s help and guidance, I can accept the task.”

But if the mother fears the fantasy, she can deceive herself into believing that the fantasy never occurred, and she can develop obsessive-compulsive defenses to protect herself from the guilt of feeling resentment toward her child. Then, later that night, she might feel the compulsive need to spend hours rearranging the clothes in her closet according to the most elaborate of rituals, to appease the nagging belief that if she doesn’t do it—and do it perfectly—her baby will die.

 

In the OCD response to guilt, therefore, you attempt to keep your guilt secret and to resolve it through your own superstitious efforts. You create rituals, and you unconsciously make mistakes in carrying them out, and you feel guilty about it all. But it’s all an artificially created guilt, taken in controlled doses, that serves to hide the real guilt of your anger at persons who have hurt you somehow.

 
Healing Guilt
Through Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment

In the current medical realm, expert consensus guidelines indicate that Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), not medication, is the initial treatment choice for OCD. For OCD treatment to be in harmony with Christianity, however, the treatment must not just suppress the symptoms, it must teach you to live a holy lifestyle purged of vindictive hostility. Rather than live in guilty fear about your fantasies, you can learn to face the anger behind the fantasies with trust in God’s protection.

This treatment has several parts: stopping compulsive behaviors, stopping obsessive thoughts, purging “revenge” from your life, and understanding that your salvation depends not on your perfectionon but on your willngness to grow in love.


1. Stopping Compulsive Behaviors

The basis for all CBT treatment for OCD is a concept called Exposure and Response Prevention. This involves exposing yourself to what you fear, and then deliberately preventing the defensive OCD response. In plain English, this all comes down to forcing yourself to not do what you fear not doing (such as not washing your hands when you touch a door handle or not organizing your closet as a response to thoughts that someone will be harmed if you don’t organize your closet).

The psychological core of Exposure and Response Prevention is to learn that distressing feelings and thoughts are not actually dangerous. The part of your brain that pushes you into an OCD impulse when you experience guilt is a primitive part of the brain that understands behavior, not language, and that has been conditioned to equate emotional distress with physical danger. When your body feels the first distress of guilt, your brain interprets it as a danger and sends out the signal to pump out fight-or-flight chemicals that cause physiological arousal.

Now, if you believe that there is a danger, and that you have to perform some OCD ritual to fight against it, you only encourage your brain to keep on pumping out more fight-or-flight chemicals, and eventually this process escalates and you succumb to the OCD impulse. Moreover, you can’t stop the impulse by telling yourself to stop it. As I said before, the part of your brain responsible for the OCD impulses doesn’t understand language. It only understands behavior—and this brings us to the real solution to the problem.

The only way to stop the OCD impulse is to act in a way that tells your brain that there is no danger. At this point, you must deliberately prevent the defensive OCD response. Then, instead of fast, shallow breathing take long, slow, deep breaths. Instead of staring around in a frenzy, close your eyes. Instead of clenching your muscles, loosen them. This behavior will tell your brain that you are not in danger, and subsequently your brain will shut down the fight-or-flight chemicals—and you will experience a calm relief.

 

When done in the context of formal psychotherapy, this process usually entails in vivo exposure; that is, having the psychotherapist present with you to encourage you—“holding your hand,” so to speak—as you encounter actual feared situations and force yourself right then and there to overcome old behaviors.

So what can you do in the Christian self-help context?

Well, as for encouragement, know that “the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ is the Father of compassion and the God of all encouragement” (2 Corinthians 1:3).

Furthermore, trust in God to hold your hand: “Since my heart was embittered and my soul deeply wounded, I was stupid and could not understand; I was like a brute beast in your presence. Yet I am always with you; you take hold of my right hand” (Psalm 73:21-23).

 

The end result of this is that you can use your free will to resist the performance of all compulsive actions and that you can trust in God to overcome the superstitious fear of not performing them.

So, you ask, “What is trust in God?” and “What does it mean to overcome superstitious fear?”


Trust in God

To trust in God is to believe in God’s protection. Full trust in God is composed of two separate but interrelated components: trust in God’s justice, and trust in God’s providence.[6]

Trust in God’s Justice. We have all encountered individuals who commit offenses and seem to “get away with it.” Although the irritation that we feel is justified, we can also be drawn into the desire to take matters into our own hands and get revenge. If we remember, however, that every crime—every sin—every offense against love—that a person commits is an offense against God that will be accounted for during his or her judgment at death, and will be paid for either in Purgatory or hell, then we can understand that no one can evade God’s perfect justice.

To trust in God’s justice, then, is to set aside our anger for the injuries inflicted on us because we believe that God administers His own justice according to His will.

Trust in God’s Providence. Some individuals have the mistaken belief that “trust in God” means to sit around doing nothing in the expectation that God will do everything for us. But this false belief is based in an avoidance of our taking full responsibility for living holy lives that bear spiritual fruits.

To trust in God’s providence, therefore, does not mean that we do nothing; it means that we believe that, in answer to our prayers, God will guide, protect, and encourage us as we take responsibility for developing and using our talents to serve God.


Overcoming Superstitious Fear

You feel the urge to perform a compulsive act because you accept the belief  that something bad will happen if you do not perform a ritual. But understand that a belief is not reality; work to overcome this false belief  with a true belief  in God’s protection. Trust in God that life is not based in superstition. When that inner OCD “voice” responds, “Come on, John. I’m only warning you for your own good. Your fears are perfectly reasonable. So be reasonable and go back and complete the ritual right now, or you’ll be sorry!” say what Christ Himself said when hearing something contrary to His mission: “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an obstacle to Me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do” (Matthew 16:23).


2. Stopping Obsessive Thoughts

As creatures of language, we all think constantly. We think more than we need to think, and we think more often than not about frivolous and spiritually useless things. As harmful as this is to a Christian life, some individuals not only think constantly but they also ruminate and dwell upon their thoughts, and then they feel guilty about it all. Once a negative thought gets in your mind, it can torment you for hours and days. The guilt can be agonizing.

Obsessive thoughts, therefore, are self-propagating. The more they breed, the more they drive you away from spiritually healthy things, such as prayer, and the more they separate you from God.

There is only one solution: drive away these obsessive thoughts[7] with one constant, holy thought. Recite the Jesus Prayer constantly.

The prayer is simple: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon me.

The technique, too, is simple: recite the prayer constantly.[8]

Still, as simple as it is, it’s hard work. No sooner will you start to pray than your mind will wander and you will be off in your own thoughts. Once you realize that your mind has wandered from the prayer, stop thinking and return to the prayer. But be gentle with yourself. Don’t blame yourself for failing. Don’t try to analyze what happened. Just immediately stop thinking and return to the prayer. Then repeat this process over and over.

You have to hold in your heart the will to do this. But if you desire it more than anything else—more even than the desire to stay stuck in your fear and disability—you can do it. If you love God, and if you love your soul, you can do it.


3. Purging Revenge From Your Life

We are all surrounded by a social world that literally feeds upon hostility—anger on anger, hatred on hatred, lawsuit on lawsuit, weapon on weapon, death on death—enslaving the unwary to a subversive lust for anger and revenge.

Endeavor, therefore, to detach yourself from these social evils.

Do this by purging revenge from your life. Stop watching TV and movies, stop playing video games, stop listening to secular music, stop reading magazines and newspapers, stop watching competitive sports (and stop playing them, if you already do). For the sake of your soul, put all these things out of your mind.

Even though these things are accepted hook, line, and sinker by our secular culture—and even by those who claim to be Christian—they have no spiritual value and are just breeding grounds for the desire to get revenge on others. The same for addictions (smoking, drinking, drugs, obesity, gambling, eroticism); these things breed revenge because by hurting yourself your unconscious intent is to sabotage authority; e.g., your parents and God.

The more that you can purge revenge from your life, the more that you are able to desire the holy rather than desire worldly pleasures, and the more that you can pray constantly rather than fill your head with worldly entertainment, the more progress you will make in overcoming your unconscious slavery to anger, and the more progress you will make in overcoming your superstitious attempts to wash away your hidden anger.


4. Salvation Depends on Love, not on Perfection

Christ chose ordinary men, not scholars and theologians, to be His Apostles and disciples. Why? To demonstrate that the Church He was establishing would grow through God’s grace, not through mere human intelligence. So keep in mind that your salvation depends on your willingness to grow in love, not on your human perfection.

Understand, therefore, that intrusive thoughts and fantasies will not, in themselves, obstruct your salvation. The real danger to your salvation comes from your failure to trust in God’s providence and justice (see above); in so far as you dwell upon fear of your fantasies, they will become temptations more than distractions, and you will feel compelled to cast aside love so as to take matters into your own hands to fight temptation with your own intelligence—and you will lose.

When you are praying and distractions interfere with your concentration, say to yourself, “It’s OK. I don’t have to repeat the prayer until I get it perfect. My intent is love; I don’t have to be perfect to love.”

When fantasies intrude into your mind, if you try to fight them they will only get more intense, and you will become more anxious. Instead of resisting, say to yourself, “It’s OK. Flashes of fantasies are products of my intellect, not my will. Let them be. I don’t really intend to carry out these thoughts in actions. My intent is love; I don’t have to be perfect in getting rid of intruding thoughts. So let’s return to the Jesus Prayer.”

 
Summary

With practice, as you learn to live a genuine Catholic life—detached from the world, trusting totally in God, chaste in body and heart, free from all anger and desire for revenge—you will have no ugly beliefs, thoughts, and fantasies to fear, and therefore no guilt to hide. From then on, whenever any fantasies arise in your mind, you can see them not as ugly and fearful, but simply as warnings that someone has hurt you somehow. Then, knowing you’ve been hurt, and feeling the pain, you can forgive the person who hurt you, and you can turn to God in faith and prayer, believing in and trusting in His protection:

   and rescues them from all distress.
The LORD is close to the broken hearted,
   saves those whose spirit is crushed.
Many are the troubles of the just
   but the LORD delivers from them all.

Imagine that, as you are about to receive from the chalice at Mass, a thought occurs to you: “I could drop this and spill the Precious Blood all over the floor.” This does not mean that you would actually like to drop the chalice, but only that your intellect recognizes the possibility that you could do it. If you push the thought out of your mind and don’t worry about it, everything will be fine. But if you dwell on the thought, allowing it to keep repeating in your mind, then you have an indication that you secretly desire to drop the chalice. In this case, the desire—manifested by the satisfaction of dwelling on the thought—is an expression of your anger at God that in itself derives from your anger at authority in general and which, in turn, specifically derives from anger at your father.

5. In fact, some persons are so good at repressing these fantasies that they will claim—even to the point of vindictive anger—they don’t even have them. This is why OCD is a disorder particularly resistant to traditional treatment.

6. The sad thing for many children is that they lack any living example of trust in God because their parents really do not live a lifestyle of genuine trust in God. Despite what their parents might say with their lips, and despite all their novenas and devotions, the parents’ fundamental psychological attitude is more often than not governed by attachment to the secular ways of the social world around them. When the children look to their parents’ religion, they see only dry rituals and superstitions. The children are wounded by their parents’ hypocrisy. They resent it. They fear it. They secretly hate their parents for denying them any experience of true faith. So when the children feel anxiety or fear because of their anger, they have nothing to protect them. Their obsessive thoughts feel like demons tormenting them. Because they don’t know how to call upon the name of God to defend them (see Psalm 91), they take matters into their own hands by creating their own compulsive rituals to neutralize their anger. It’s as if they unconsciously use psychological symptoms to “show” their parents that the family lacks any meaningful faith.

7. On another page of this website I explain about understanding your fantasies rather than trying to ignore them. This work of understanding is valuable, but even when you have understood your fantasies they will not just grow wings and fly away. Distractions will keep intruding into your mind as long as you live. The advice on the present webpage is therefore intended to help you ward off the distractions you have already understood.

8. You don’t have to be concerned about getting your work done. When you need to think logically, or when you need to pray other prayers, the Jesus Prayer will not interfere. It will cease when you need it to cease; just remember to start it again when you become aware that it has stopped.

Father, for the strength You have given all Your sheep I thank You. For the health You have blessed me with, I thank You. Wonderful promises

La prière, source de puissance pour les autres

Lorsque nous ressentons en nous la joie de la communion au Christ durant la prière, et que nous sommes jugés dignes de porter sa croix, cela ne veut pas dire que la prière soit parvenue à son terme. C’est au contraire pour nous une invitation à commencer à nous initier au mystère de la prière qui dépasse l’entendement humain : nous découvrons que nos prières deviennent pour les autres une source de puissance spirituelle.

Celui à qui le Christ confie les secrets de son cœur et de sa mission envers les pécheurs, reçoit de lui la puissance d’achever son œuvre et de vivre son amour. Celui qui aime les pécheurs comme le Christ les aime, qui compatit à la souffrance des pauvres et des malades, et qui est disposé à se dépenser pour eux, est justement celui qui est capable de prier pour eux et d’obtenir leur guérison, leur consolation et leur réconfort.

Lorsque la prière s’élève au niveau de l’amour divin par une obéissance assidue à l’Esprit et qu’elle s’épanouit en communion au Christ, elle devient alors puissante et efficace, au point d’être pour les autres une source d’assistance spirituelle, de réconfort et de consolation. Elle devient même capable d’obtenir pour les autres la rémission de leurs péchés. Car l’homme qui s’unit au Christ par la prière devient capable de se mettre à la place du pécheur, en étant disposé à prendre sur lui son péché et toute sa faiblesse, et à endurer à sa place toute correction et tout châtiment. Il devient alors par le fait même, en vertu de cette disposition et de son union au Christ, capable de demander pour les autres le pardon de leurs péchés et de l’obtenir.

Ici, la prière commence à jouer un rôle des plus importants pour le salut des autres, pour le pardon de leurs péchés et la manifestation de la miséricorde divine en ceux qui sont loin de Dieu par indifférence ou par ignorance. Elle devient ainsi le puissant appui de la prédication, la force mystérieuse qui prévient la Parole et prépare les cœurs à recevoir la rémission et le salut.

Un seul qui prie avec ferveur, dans sa chambre, dans le secret, peut causer, par son union au Christ, le salut de milliers de personnes.

Dieu emploie nos prières
pour le salut des autres

Sachons donc que, lorsque Dieu nous attire à la prière, il ne prend pas uniquement en considération notre propre salut, mais il désire également employer nos prières pour le salut des autres. Aussi la prière est-elle une œuvre des plus fondamentales et des plus précieuses aux yeux de Dieu. L’homme qui fait des efforts dans sa vie de prière et qui progresse rapidement dans l’esprit d’abandon et d’obéissance à la volonté de Dieu devient un bon soldat du Christ Jésus (2 Tm 2,3). Le Seigneur lui-même l’appelle tous les jours à se tenir en sa présence, et l’exerce à intercéder en faveur des autres jusqu’à être exaucé. Il recevra bientôt du Seigneur la puissance de sauver de nombreuses personnes et de les ramener de la voie de la mort vers le sein de Dieu.

Le progrès de notre vie de prière se traduit par l’intimité de notre amour envers Dieu. Cette intimité est la conséquence directe tant de la satisfaction que Dieu éprouve à notre égard dans de sa condescendance envers notre faiblesse que de l’ampleur de l’horizon de notre humanité, c’est-à-dire de l’acuité de la conscience que nous avons de notre devoir absolu envers les autres, de notre responsabilité spirituelle envers les pécheurs et ceux dont la foi ou la charité est défaillante, ceux qui souffrent ou sont opprimés, ceux qui prêchent et annoncent la Parole.

Les degrés supérieurs de la prière, dans lesquels elle s’élance vers la perfection, ont pour signe la supplication fervente avec larmes en faveur des autres. C’est comme si notre progrès dans la vie de prière nous était accordé en fait au profit de nos frères faibles qui ne savent pas prier. Priez les uns pour les autres, afin que vous soyez guéris (Jc 5,16). Et lorsque saint Jacques nous enjoint d’appeler les presbytres de l’Église pour qu’ils prient sur le malade qui souffre, afin de le guérir, c’est parce que le prêtre est supposé être plus avancé que les autres hommes dans la vie de prière, y avoir reçu plus de grâces et avoir ainsi été mis à part pour se consacrer à prier pour les autres.

Nous ne pouvons progresser dans les degrés de la prière, acquérir une véritable assurance auprès de Dieu, ni recevoir le don des larmes que dans la mesure du progrès de notre compassion envers ceux qui souffrent et sont outragés (soit par les hommes, soit par le péché) : Souvenez-vous des prisonniers comme si vous étiez emprisonnés avec eux et de ceux qui sont outragés, comme étant vous aussi dans un corps (Hé 13,3). Autrement dit, le progrès de notre intimité avec Dieu, qui a son centre dans la prière, dépend fondamentalement du progrès de notre connaissance des fardeaux des hommes et de notre disposition à les porter avec eux avec plus de générosité.

Notre communion au Christ
et notre communion aux souffrances des hommes

Notre communion à la peine de ceux qui souffrent, qui sont malades ou outragés, et notre capacité à porter leurs fardeaux ne nous viennent pas d’une simple philanthropie humaine, d’une compassion passagère ou du désir d’être bien vus ou de recevoir des éloges ; car une telle compassion serait vouée à diminuer bien vite, puis à disparaître. Mais c’est par la prière persévérante, pure, sincère, que nous recevons ces sentiments, comme un don de Dieu qui nous rend capables, non seulement de persévérer dans cette communion avec les plus faibles, mais encore d’y progresser au point de ne plus pouvoir vivre sans eux (1 Th 3,, et de ne trouver de repos que dans le partage de leurs peines et de leurs souffrances. Le secret de ce charisme réside dans notre communion au Christ, dans notre participation à sa nature et à ses qualités divines, de sorte que ce soit lui désormais qui opère en nous à la fois le vouloir et l’opération même (Ph 2,13). Ainsi notre communion aux souffrances des hommes et notre communion au Christ dépendent fondamentalement l’une de l’autre au plus haut degré ; de sorte que porter la croix du Christ signifie par le fait même prendre part à la croix des hommes, sans restriction, jusqu’au bout.

Lorsque diminue l’intimité de nos rapports avec le Christ dans la prière, cela indique qu’une grave maladie a atteint la prière en son essence même. Pour ceux qui agissent, qui servent les autres et prient pour eux, cela signifie une grande perte, un échec certain : ils commencent alors à s’attiédir, à se sentir las ; c’est avec effort désormais qu’ils doivent remplir les devoirs qui leur étaient autrefois très chers  ; ensuite ils en viennent à les négliger et à vouloir s’évader, et finalement ils s’en abstiennent et se refusent. Car sans le Christ, il est impossible de continuer à servir les autres d’une action féconde, soutenue et efficace ; et le Christ, on ne l’atteint que dans la prière.

La recherche de soi
dans la prière souille la prière

La prière parvient à son degré de pureté authentique lorsque nous nous y oublions totalement, c’est-à-dire que, délibérément, nous cessons de nous intéresser à nous-mêmes et préférons nous occuper uniquement des besoins, des soucis et du salut des autres. Le degré de pureté parfaite de la prière est corrélatif du degré de l’amour parfait. Or, l’amour n’est vraiment authentique que lorsqu’il ne cherche pas son propre intérêt : L’amour ne cherche pas ce qui est à lui (1 Co 13,5). S’intéresser à soi, à ses propres besoins - tant spirituels que matériels - dénote une imperfection de l’amour, et par conséquent une imperfection de la prière. La cause en est l’imperfection de notre connaissance intérieure du Christ et de notre union à lui. Le Christ a dit : Ce n’est pas ma volonté que je cherche... (Jn 5,30) . Il n’est pas de plus grand amour que de donner sa vie pour ses amis (Jn 15,13). Qui aime sa vie la perd (Jn 12,25). Aimez vos ennemis, priez pour vos persécuteurs (Mt 5,44).

S’oublier soi-même dans la prière,
c’est devenir ambassadeur du Christ

L’oubli de soi commence par un effort volontaire. Mais quand on y persévère avec sincérité devant Dieu, Dieu nous l’accorde comme un don gratuit. C’est alors spontanément que nous ne recherchons plus chacun nos propres intérêts, mais plutôt que chacun songe à ceux des autres (Ph 2,4).

Lorsque nous négligeons délibérément nos propres besoins dans la prière et que nous trouvons notre joie uniquement à demander, supplier et nous dépenser au profit des autres, alors Dieu lui-même commence à s’occuper de nous et à prendre en charge toute notre vie, tant au plan matériel qu’au plan spirituel, jusque dans les plus petits détails. Autrement dit, lorsque nous nous occupons des autres, Dieu s’occupe de nous ; et lorsque nous limitons notre prière et notre supplication aux besoins des autres, Dieu comble nos besoins sans que nous le demandions. C’est ainsi que se réalise, au moyen de la prière, le dessein salutaire du Christ, au sujet duquel il dit à ses apôtres : Allez, de toutes les nations faites des disciples (Mt 28,19).

L’homme dont le cœur s’est ouvert à Dieu se suffit de Dieu et ne doit plus rien demander pour lui-même. Celui dont le cœur ne s’est pas encore ouvert à Dieu a besoin de cœurs amis qui s’épanchent devant Dieu en sa faveur, afin que Dieu l’exauce par la prière fervente de ses frères. L’homme qui a connu Dieu et l’a aimé devient responsable devant Dieu de son frère dont le cœur ne s’est pas encore ouvert à Dieu. C’est ainsi que Dieu atteint les pécheurs égarés loin de lui, par la prière de ceux qui l’aiment et sont proches de lui.

Ceux qui ont aimé le Christ et qui lui sont fidèles deviennent sur la terre de véritables ambassadeurs du Christ. Par leurs prières et leur disposition à se dépenser, ils réconcilient Dieu avec les hommes et les hommes avec Dieu : Nous sommes donc en ambassade pour le Christ... Nous vous en supplions au nom du Christ : Laissez-vous réconcilier avec Dieu (2 Co 5,20).

Dans bien des cas, il devient impossible d’entrer en rapport avec les pécheurs et les égarés, soit à cause de leur hostilité, soit à cause de la honte qu’ils éprouvent à nous parler. Mais par la prière, nous dépassons ces obstacles qui nous séparent d’eux ; nous surmontons leur hostilité et nous évitons leur honte ; car par la prière, nous pouvons nous approcher secrètement de leur cœur, nous y glisser sans qu’ils le sachent et y gémir en nous identifiant à eux, comme si nous-mêmes, nous étions pécheurs et égarés ; tout cela avant même qu’ils ne nous connaissent et qu’ils ne nous parlent. Si donc, du fond de leur cœur, nous prions et crions vers Dieu en portant le poids de leurs fautes et de leur égarement, Dieu les entend à travers nous ; malgré leur insoumission naturelle, le repentir assaille leur conscience et l’appel au retour se fait si pressant qu’ils se dirigent bien vite vers Dieu et vers nous en demandant notre aide.

La prière est une force d’attraction par laquelle l’homme attire son frère par l’intermédiaire de l’Esprit Saint ; car c’est par l’Esprit que le Christ attire tout à lui (Jn 12,32) et transforme en lui-même la dualité en unité (Cf. Ép 2,14).

Nous avons grand besoin
qu’on prie pour nous

Ce ne sont pas seulement les pécheurs et les égarés qui ont besoin qu’on prie pour qu’ils se convertissent et reviennent à la connaissance de Dieu, mais nous aussi, vous et moi, nous avons grand besoin des prières des autres. Car trop souvent nous négligeons d’examiner notre conscience et nous y laissons traîner de graves fautes. Nous omettons de nous en accuser pendant de longues années, et elles contribuent à affaiblir notre vie spirituelle. À cause de cela, notre âme se trouve dépourvue de la puissance de Dieu et de l’action manifeste de la grâce. Nous parlons des péchés des hommes, nous prions pour les autres, tandis que le péché couve en nos membres, souille nos pensées et entretient nos passions.

Nous avons le plus grand besoin qu’on prie pour nous avec ferveur afin que l’Esprit nous dévoile les péchés qui traînent et se cachent en notre cœur, et afin que notre conscience soit prise de repentir et se convertisse. Nous pourrons alors recevoir en nous la puissance de Dieu, et nos prières et toutes nos œuvres seront ravivées par le dynamisme manifeste de la grâce. Les prières des autres, lorsqu’elles sont dirigées vers nous avec force et discernement, réveillent notre être intérieur. Elles deviennent comme des traits enflammés, étincelants, qui illuminent nos consciences et enflamment nos cœurs pour que nous cherchions la conversion et le salut. Les prières des autres, quand elles sont ferventes, deviennent pour l’homme de Dieu un facteur des plus importants pour rénover sa vie et acquérir plus d’énergie spirituelle.

Même les saints, les prophètes et les apôtres avaient besoin des prières des autres. Sans la prière du Christ pour lui, saint Pierre aurait péri à tout jamais par son reniement et sa foi aurait défailli sans retour (Lc 22,32). De même, n’était la prière sans relâche de l’Église pour lui, il aurait terminé sa vie en prison au temps d’Hérode (Ac 12,5). Saint Paul aussi avait une conscience aiguë de l’importance de la prière des autres pour qu’il lui soit donné " d’ouvrir la bouche " pour annoncer le message de l’Esprit et pour qu’il puisse persévérer dans son ministère. Aussi ne cessait-il jamais de demander à chaque Église de prier pour lui (Ép 6,19 ; Col 4,3 ; Ro 15,30 etc.). Le saint, le prophète, l’apôtre ne peut donc se suffire de sa propre prière pour lui-même ou pour son ministère, mais il a vivement besoin que les autres prient pour lui, afin qu’il soit plus entièrement rempli de la puissance divine et que la grâce suscite en lui de nouvelles énergies.

C’est ainsi que la prière des autres devient, pour celui qui agit ou qui prêche, une source irremplaçable d’énergie spirituelle. Dans la mesure où les prières des autres pour lui se font plus ferventes, son action devient plus efficace ; et tant qu’on persévère à plier les genoux pour lui devant le Seigneur, l’ardeur de son action persiste et ses paroles reçoivent la puissance et l’efficacité de l’Esprit Saint.

La prière pour les autres
est une grave responsabilité

La prière, quant à sa nécessité, passe par trois stades :

- Au début, nous ressentons cette nécessité comme un " acte de fidélité ", fidélité du serviteur envers son maître ou son créateur. On lui rend grâces, on le loue et on le glorifie en retour des bienfaits qu’on a reçus de lui. On sent que c’est de sa main qu’on reçoit et qu’on lui donne (cf. 2 Cr 29,14). Aussi est-il grave de cesser de prier. Le serviteur peut-il cesser d’être fidèle et rester encore dans la maison ?

- Quand on progresse dans la prière, on perçoit mieux l’essence même de la prière en tant qu’elle exprime la relation vivifiante qui unit l’homme à son Seigneur. L’homme qui prie vit de la vie de Dieu, et celui qui néglige la prière ne vit plus que par lui-même et ne reçoit pas en lui les signes manifestes de la vie divine. Si donc dans ses débuts la prière exprime la " fidélité du serviteur ", elle devient ensuite un " signe de vie éternelle ".

- Quand on continue à progresser dans la prière, on découvre une nouvelle dimension importante : la prière devient le canal par lequel passe la relation de l’homme avec ses frères. L’homme expérimente en effet que sa prière a commencé à devenir pour les autres aussi une source de vie et de puissance. Quelqu’un voit-il son frère commettre un péché... qu’il prie et il lui donnera la vie (1 Jn 5,16). Celui donc qui prie pour les autres relève et fait revivre des âmes mortes ou qui étaient en voie de mourir, selon la parole du Seigneur : Faites revivre les morts (Mt 10,.

Ici, la prière commence à devenir une " grave responsabilité " ; car si, pour une raison quelconque, l’homme cesse de prier pour les pécheurs qui vivent autour de lui, et néglige de supplier en leur faveur, ils mourront dans leur péché. Ici la négligence dans la prière parvient à son comble et entraîne les plus graves conséquences. Le pécheur meurt dans son péché faute d’avoir eu l’âme réveillée, ranimée par la prière des autres. Comment alors pourra se justifier celui qui aura négligé de prier pour lui et l’aura privé ainsi de la source de vie dont Dieu l’a rendu responsable? Voyez-vous la gravité de la prière ?

Si donc la prière, au début de la vie spirituelle, semble être nécessaire, puis s’avère être, pour ceux qui y progressent, essentielle à la vie de l’Esprit, elle devient finalement pour ceux qui ont été initiés au mystère de la prière pour les autres, une des plus graves responsabilités que Dieu ait jamais confiées aux hommes.

L’homme qui ressent la nécessité de la prière pour les pécheurs et qui néglige de prier pour eux, prend part à une faute grave et devient responsable de leur mort.

Qui donc sait faire le bien et ne le fait pas se charge d’un péché (Jc 4,17).
Pour ma part, que je me garde de pécher contre le Seigneur en cessant de prier pour vous (1 Sam 12,23).

Celui qui a reçu la puissance de faire revivre un mort et ne le fait pas vivre devient responsable de sa mort. La prière est une capacité de ramener de la mort à la vie, puisque le péché est la mort de l’âme et la prière le moyen d’obtenir la rémission du péché.

La prière de la foi sauvera le malade et le Seigneur le relèvera. S’il a commis des péchés, ils lui seront remis (Jc 5,15).

Nous sommes donc appelés à prier pour les pécheurs, non seulement pour les sauver de la mort du péché, mais encore pour ne pas mourir nous-mêmes à leur suite. La prière que nous élevons pour eux, avec insistance, supplication et larmes, nous libère de la responsabilité de leur sang et nous évite de mourir à cause d’eux (Éz 3,19 ; 33, 1-9).

C’est ainsi que la prière d’intercession pour les pécheurs augmente la proportion des membres actifs dans la famille humaine, et cela en rendant l’homme responsable du salut de son frère. Fils d’homme, je t’ai établi guetteur pour la maison d’Israël (Éz 3,17). C’est ainsi que l’homme qui épanche son âme dans la prière pour les pécheurs est établi apôtre du message de salut pour toutes les catégories de pécheurs, proches ou éloignés de lui, qu’il a rencontrés durant sa vie ou qu’il n’a jamais connus. Allez, de toutes les nations faites des disciples (Mt 28, 19).

Par la prière, l’homme devient prêtre, en ce sens qu’il devient responsable du salut des autres et capable - dans l’amour, le don de soi et la participation au sacrifice et au sacerdoce du Christ - de les libérer de la condamnation à mort que leur valait leur péché. En se chargeant de leur péché, en gémissant du fond du cœur sous son poids et en faisant pénitence, il devient capable, se faisant pécheur à leur place, de demander leur pardon et de l’obtenir pour eux.

Voyant leur foi, Jésus dit au paralytique :
Confiance, mon enfant, tes péchés te sont remis (Mt 9,2).

can a prayer be inspired by a battle?

after supposedly seeing a frightening vision: evil spirits, trying to fulfill Satan’s boast to destroy our Lord’s Church within a century, were engaging in fierce attacks against it. Although the Pontiff saw St. Michael casting Satan (also known as the devil) and his demons back into Hell in his vision, he was so horrified by what he had seen he felt compelled to help defend our faith in this struggle.

In the Saint Michael prayer he throws down the gauntlet to “the father of lies” as Jesus calls the devil in John’s Gospel (8:44), by enlisting the help of a very special Archangel:

please dear YESHUA, ask Saint Michael the Archangel to
defend us in battle. Tell him to be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O King of Kings, by the Divine Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

St. Michael makes a great general in this fight between Christ and Satan for our souls! After all, we read in Revelation (12:7-9) that “there was a great battle in heaven; Michael and his angels fought with the dragon...and that great dragon...who is called the devil and Satan, who seduces the whole world...was cast unto the earth, and his angels [the demons] were thrown down with him.”

St. Michael’s very name (in Hebrew, Micha’el meaning “Who is like to God?”) denotes the war cry uttered in that battle. Note that when we talk about Satan or the devil here we are also referring to his “army” of fallen angels, the evil spirits referred to in the Saint Michael prayer.

As a special patron and protector of the Church, St. Michael has been assigned to fight against Satan; to protect faithful souls from him, especially at their death; to champion God’s people; and, further along this line, to escort them to their judgment.

Although we tend to downplay the notion of the devil as being too quaint or outmoded today, he does indeed exist and not just as a symbol of evil, or as character in a fairytale to frighten us.

We obviously can’t excuse all our sins and failures by saying, as the comedian Flip Wilson did in a line he made famous, “The devil made me do it!” After all, God allows us to be tempted but gives us the grace and the free will to choose Him and not the devil.

Still, we shouldn’t assume the devil is just some cartoon figure. Priests such as Father Malachi Martin and Father Gabriele Amorth have written extensively of their struggles with demons during exorcisms.

One of Satan’s greatest assets is his camouflage, the belief that he doesn’t exist, as Father Martin once noted in his acclaimed book Hostage to the Devil. Father Martin felt strongly that disbelief in Satan and the forces of evil leaves us unable to resist them.

On the subject of resistance, keep in mind that we can and should say
the Saint Michael prayer at church or just on our own during the day for spiritual protection for ourselves and for others as well!

Satan was unable to destroy the Catholic Church in the 20th century, but certainly our faith withstood terrible onslaughts just from Hitler and Stalin alone. We are still engaged in that war that has gone for all of human history, in one form or another, between God and the devil.

Each of us has had our own battles against the dark side trying to turn us away from eternal life with our Creator. Satan’s idea for our eternal life is one spent with him in hatred and misery and he’s after as many souls as he can get!

As St. Peter once noted “be sober and watch, because your adversary the devil as a roaring lion, goes about seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:. “The evil spirits who roam about the world seeking the ruin of souls” mentioned in the Saint Michael prayer have surely been busy, but in asking for help we can fight back against them every day.

Prayer and the sacraments are an essential part of what St. Paul called the “armor of God” in his letter to the Ephesians. The Saint Michael
prayer can help us indeed “stand against the deceits of the devil" (Eph 6:11) by “taking the shield of faith” (Eph 6:16). Remember, God permits us to be tempted by the devil but gives us the grace to resist him through prayer in our daily lives.

Let us not be afraid to ask for St. Michael’s help in this prayer and others listed here like it. We need to remember that each time we pray we work to defeat our real enemies, not each other, but rather the devil and his evil spirits.

As St. Paul put it, we fight “not against flesh and blood but against principalities and power, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness” (Eph 6:12). With God’s help in prayer they can all be overcome.
