The Prayer O Lord Forgive.

My failure to be true even to my own accepted standards:
O Lord, forgive!
My self-deception in the face of temptation: O Lord, forgive!
My choosing of the worse when I knew the better:
O Lord forgive!
My failure to apply to myself the standards of conduct that I demand of others;
Lord forgive!
My blindness to the suffering of others and my slowness to be taught by my own:
O Lord, forgive!
My complacence toward wrongs that do not touch my won case and my over sensitiveness to those that do:
O Lord, forgive!
My slowness to see the good in my fellows and to see the evil in myself:
O Lord forgive!
My hardness of heart toward my neighbor's faults and my readiness to make allowance for my own:
O Lord for give!
My unwillingness to believe that You have called me to a small work and my brother to a great one:
O Lord, forgive!

The Prayer Thank You God !

Dear Loving and Compassionate God,
Giver of all gifts,
we pray especially today for the mercy and love You give us.
Open our hearts and minds to You.
Give us the grace to accept your mercy.
As we live each day,
we pray for those less fortunate,
especially those who are hurting,
and whose wounds need to be healed.
Help us become involved in ways that show them how deeply
we care.
Give us the personal courage to listen to their concerns
and help them find the solutions to which they are
entitled.
as Your children and our brothers and sisters.

Amen.

The Prayer "Thank You God"

For all You have given,
Thank You God.

For all You have withheld,
Thank You God.

For all You have withdrawn,
Thank You God.

For all You have permitted,
Thank You God.

For all You have prevented,
Thank You God.

For all You have forgiven me,
Thank You God.

For all You have prepared for me,
Thank You God.

For the death You have chosen for me,
Thank you God.

For the place you are keeping for me in heaven,
Thank You God.

For having created me to love You for eternity,
Thank You God. Amen .

Prayer must start with praise, thanks for God

Now you may remember, because I mentioned it a number of times, our Gospel lessons over the last 12-14 weeks, through the summer and into the fall now, have been Luke's account of the last journey of Jesus with his disciples to Jerusalem, the journeys that he knew would end in his being shamed and being tortured and finally executed.
Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Sirach 35:12-14, 16-18
Psalms 34:2-3, 17-18, 19, 23
2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18
Luke 18:9-14
Full text of the readings
But along the way of this journey, Jesus has been teaching various ways, various times -- healing, reaching out to the poor, giving comfort to the afflicted, trying to bring justice to people -- and today once more, Jesus provides us with some teaching.

As last Sunday, today's teaching is about prayer. Perhaps it's good to recall that near the very beginning of this journey, when the disciples asked Jesus, "Lord, teach us to pray." They had seen him go apart by himself and become deeply engaged in communion with God, and they knew they needed to achieve that same ability -- to go into the depths of their heart and to be in communion with God.

Our Jan. 17 edition includes the annual Volunteers special section. These articles are only available in our print newspaper or Kindle edition, so become a subscriber today!
So Jesus did. He taught them the prayer that we say regularly -- and almost probably it's a prayer that's too familiar, and we don't always think about it as deeply as we should -- but it's the Our Father, the one where we praise God, call for God to reign, to come in its fullness. We pray for forgiveness for ourselves as we forgive others, and it's a beautiful, all-encompassing prayer. But now, Jesus once more is teaching us to pray, and maybe this is the most important lesson about prayer that we need to reflect on and make real to ourselves.

Last Sunday, you may remember, Jesus taught the disciples about praying with constancy, with perseverance. Not that they, with a certain number of prayers, would turn God around, but rather that they would pray with a continuing awareness that God is there ready to assist, even if it takes a long time, but we never give up.

So besides faithfulness in prayer, last Sunday, Jesus taught us it's important to pray as a community, to be with others who are praying at the same time, so we strengthen one another's convictions and faith and deepen our relationship with God through others.

But today, Jesus teaches us what perhaps is the most foundational part of praying, because at the beginning of the parable, Jesus tells the disciples that he is going to tell this parable "for the benefit of those who are fully convinced of their own righteousness, who are convinced that they are who they should be, what they should be, because of themselves." ... As this Pharisee goes into the temple to pray, [he] elaborates all the good things that he does, so he's responsible for that.

So what Jesus is trying to say, to start our prayer, we must be really justified, which means being in right relationship with God, faithful to our covenant relationships that were made for us through baptism, repeated regularly in the Eucharist. But be in this right relationship -- understanding who we are, who God is -- and then when we pray, we start from that awareness.

I am who I am because of God. I have been drawn into existence by God out of love. God's love drew me into being; God's love constantly supports me. Everything I do is supported by God's loving me. I don't earn things from God because I do this, that, or the other thing.

You see, the Pharisee recited the good things he had done: "I fast twice a week. The law said once. I give a 10th of all my income. The law says, agricultural goods, a 10th of those." So he emphasizes, "I do this," and then to show how he's the one responsible, he looks over at that publican, the sinner. "I'm not like the rest of the people," and he puts him down. So he has been responsible for who he is in his goodness -- his shining forth -- in contrast to the poor. In this case, one who is almost certainly a sinner because his very work brings him into contact with Gentiles, which is against the law.

So this Pharisee is highlighting his goodness as though he is responsible for it, and it's not wrong to recognize that we've been blessed. When you look at how Paul writes about himself in his letter to Timothy, Paul is near his death, and he says, "As for me, I'm already poured out as a libation." He's being sacrificed now to his martyrdom: "The moment of my departure has come." Then Paul says, "I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith."

But Paul also says, "The Lord has been at my side, giving me strength to proclaim the word fully, and that all the pagans hear it, so I was rescued from the lion's mouth. God will save me from all evil, bringing me to God's heavenly kingdom, and so glory to God forever and ever." See, Paul has it right: His relationship to God, he understands, is that God has first loved him. God has brought him out of his sinful ways -- his lust and good ways at least -- and now God has prepared him for the fullness of life and in heaven.

But the key difference is the one person, besides his good qualities, [who] looks down on others who don't have them, puts himself over them, doesn't recognize that it's because there are good qualities, God has blessed him. The sinner recognizes, "I need God; God has to justify me, and God will justify me when I turn to God, express my sorrow for my failures. God is waiting to be gracious to me, to lift me up, to fill me with love and goodness."

So when we pray, it must always be from that awareness that it starts with God. In the first letter of John, there's a passage where John is trying to describe for us who God is and says, "God is love," and then reminds us, "Here's what love means: not that we have first loved God, but God has first loved us."

If we start all our prayer with that awareness -- God has first loved us -- then our prayer will be prayer that will be praise for God, thanks to God, sorrow for our failures, and petitions for our God's blessings, but always, we will be in a situation where God will be waiting to be gracious to us. God can hear our prayer when we come to God with that awareness that God first loved us, and never put ourselves over or above others, never put others down, but only be aware of how God has loved us, God has loved me.

If we pray in that way, well then surely, as our first lesson says today, "The one who serves God wholeheartedly will be heard. The prayer of the humble person pierces the clouds. The humble person's prayer will not cease until the Most High has looked down, until justice has been done in favor of the righteous."

In other words, until that right relationship with God has been established because we have come to God with an awareness that God first loved us. Then our relationship with God will continue to be one of thanks and praise and a response of love for all that God has first done for us.

Truly, I hope we can hear and learn this lesson about prayer. As I said at the beginning, it's probably the most important part of Jesus' teaching on prayer. If we hear it and act on it, then our right relationship with God will surely be established, and God will overwhelm us with God's love.

Forgive Me

Father,

There are no words to express how filthy I feel every time I break Your heart. The guilt and the shame are overwhelming! Lord, I need Your touch right now. I am so sick of being “born again” and still doing the things I hate doing. Like Paul, I am conflicted. “For I do not do what I want, but do the very thing that I hate.” (Romans 7:15) I am so sorry! Father, I ask for Your forgiveness right now. I am shocked that my life has come to a point where even some sins don’t affect me at all. Father, I have some hard layers on my heart that need peeling. Please give me a 100% heart of flesh.  The hardness is a barrier between us that I can’t stand! I love You and I am so regrettably sorry for my selfish actions. Thank You for Your forgiveness, Lord. Without forgiveness I am nothing. With Your forgiveness I am whole again. I praise Your Name! In the name of YEHUSHUA. Amen.

For Salvation (How to become a Christian) Heavenly Father, in the Name of Jesus, I present myself to You. I pray and ask Jesus to be Lord over my life. I believe it in my heart, so I say it with my mouth: 'Jesus has been raised from the dead.' This moment, I make Him the Lord over my life. Jesus, come into my heart. I believe this moment that I am saved. I say it now: 'I am reborn. I am a Christian. I am a child of Almighty God.' Amen Now, thank God for making you His child. You have just inherited the kingdom of God!

For Healing(How to pray for healing) Father, I am your child. I am filled with your Spirit. I believe that Jesus bore my sickness and carried my diseases, and I believe that by His stripes I was healed 2,000 years ago. Right now, I accept that fact by faith. I believe that I am healed now, in the Name of Jesus. Amen (or, use the following, or both combined...) A prayer for health and healing) Father, in the Name of Jesus, I confess Your Word concerning health and healing. As I do, I believe that Your Word will not return to You void, but will accomplish what it says. In the Name of Jesus, I believe that I am healed according to 1 Peter 2:24. Your Word says that Jesus Himself took my infirmities and bore my sicknesses (Mat. 8:17). Therefore, with great boldness and confidence, I stand on the authority of Your Word and declare that I am redeemed from the curse of sickness. I refuse to tolerate its symptoms. Satan, I speak to you in Jesus’ Name and I proclaim that your principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in heavenly places are bound from operating against me in any way. I am loosed from your assignment. I am the property of Almighty God and I give you no place in me. I dwell in the secret place of the Most High God and I abide under the shadow of the Almighty, whose power no foe can withstand. Now Father, I believe Your Word that says, ‘The angel of the Lord encamps round about me and delivers me from every evil work. No evil shall befall me, no plague or calamity shall come near my dwelling.’ I confess that the Word abides in me and it is life and medicine to my flesh. The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus operates in me, making me free from the law of sin and death. I hold fast to my confession of Your Word and I stand immovable, knowing that health and healing are mine now, in Jesus' Name. Amen

For Baptism in the Holy Spirit (How to receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit) My heavenly Father, I am a believer. I am Your child and You are my Father. Jesus is my Lord. I believe with all my heart, that Your Word is true. Your Word says that if I ask, I will receive the Holy Spirit, so in the Name of Jesus Christ, my Lord, I am asking You to fill me to overflowing with Your precious Holy Spirit. Jesus, baptize me in the Holy Spirit. Because of Your Word, I believe that I now receive and I thank You for it. I believe that the Holy Spirit is within me and by faith I accept it. Now, Holy Spirit, rise up within me as I praise my God. I fully expect to speak with other tongues as you give me the utterance. Amen To Make Jesus the Lord of Your Life Heavenly Father, in the Name of Jesus, I present myself to You. I pray and ask Jesus to be Lord over my life. I believe it in my heart, so I say it with my mouth: Jesus has been raised from the dead. This moment, I make Him the Lord over my life. Jesus, come into my heart. I believe this moment that I am saved. I say it now: I am reborn. I am a Christian. I am a child of Almighty God. Amen. Scripture References: John 1:12; 3:16; 6:37; 10:10; John 14:6; John 16:8-9; Romans 3:23; Romans 5:8; Romans 10:9-10, 13; 2 Corinthians 5:1, 7, 19, 21; To Be Filled With the Holy Spirit My heavenly Father, I am a believer. I am Your child and You are my Father. Jesus is my Lord. I believe with all my heart that Your Word is true. Your Word says, that if I will ask, I will receive the Holy Spirit, so in the Name of Jesus Christ, my Lord, I am asking You to fill me to overflowing with Your precious Holy Spirit. Jesus, baptize me in the Holy Spirit. Because of Your Word, I believe that I now receive and I thank You for it. I believe that the Holy Spirit is within me and, by faith, I accept it. Now, Holy Spirit, rise up within me as I praise my God. I fully expect to speak with other tongues, as You give me the utterance. Amen. Scripture References. Luke 11:9-13; John 14:10, 12, 16-17; Acts 1:8, 2:4, 32-33, 39; 8:12-1, 7, 10:44-46, 19:2, 5-6; 1 Corinthians 14:2-15, 18, 27; Ephesians 6:18; Jude 20. A Prayer for Salvation in Behalf of Others Father, I come before You in prayer and in faith, believing. Your Word says that You desire all men to be saved and come into the knowledge of the truth, so I bring _______________ (name) before You this day. I break the power of Satan from his assignments and activities in _______________'s life in the Name of Jesus. Now, while Satan is bound, I ask that You send forth the perfect laborers to share the good news of the gospel in such a way that he (she) will listen and understand it. As the truth is ministered, I believe _______________ will come to his (her) senses and come out of the snare of the devil and make Jesus the Lord of his (her) life. Father, I ask that You fill _______________ with the knowledge of Your will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. As I intercede in his (her) behalf, I believe that the power of the Holy Spirit is activated and from this moment on, I shall praise and thank You for _______________'s salvation. I am confident that You are alert and active, watching over Your Word to perform it. It will not return to You void. It will accomplish that which You please and prosper in the thing whereto it was sent. Therefore, my confession of faith is, "God has begun a good work in _______________'s life and He will perform it and bring it to full completion until the day of Jesus Christ, in Jesus' Name." Amen. Scripture References from The Amplified Bible: 2 Peter 3:9; Matthew 18:18, 9:37-38; 2 Timothy 2:26; Jeremiah 1:12; Isaiah 55:11; Philippians 1:6. A Prayer for a Harmonious Marriage Father, in the Name of Jesus, it is written in Your Word that love is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost Who is given to us. Because You are in us, we acknowledge that love reigns supreme. We believe that love is displayed in full expression enfolding and knitting us together in truth, making us perfect for every good work to do Your will, working in us that which is well pleasing in Your sight. We desire to live and conduct ourselves and our marriage honorably and becomingly. We esteem it as precious, worthy and of great price. We commit ourselves to live in mutual harmony and accord with one another, delighting in each other, being of the same mind and united in spirit. Father, we believe and say that we are gentle, compassionate, courteous, tenderhearted and humble minded. We seek peace and it keeps our hearts in quietness and assurance. Because we follow after love and dwell in peace, our prayers are not hindered in any way in the Name of Jesus. We are heirs together of the grace of God. We purpose together to live in agreement, to live in harmony, to live in peace, to live in power toward each other and toward all men. We confess that our marriage grows stronger day by day in the bond of unity because it is founded on Your Word and rooted and grounded in Your love. Father, we thank You for the performance of it in Jesus' Name. Amen. Scripture References from The Amplified Bible: Romans 5:5; Philippians 1:9; Colossians 3:14, 1:10; Philippians 2:13, 2:2; Ephesians 4:32; Isaiah 32:2; Philippians 4:7; 1 Peter 3:7; Ephesians 3:1, 7-18; Jeremiah 1:12. A Prayer for Your Children Father, Your Word is true and I believe it. Therefore, in the Name of Jesus, I believe in my heart and say with my mouth that the Word of God prevails over my children. Your Word says that You will pour out Your Spirit upon my offspring and Your blessing upon my descendants. I believe and say that my children are wise and they take heed to and are the fruit of godly instruction and correction. I love my children and I will diligently discipline them early. Because of that, they give me delight and rest. Father, I take Your Word that says You will contend with him who contends with me and You give safety to my children and ease them day by day. I confess that You, Lord, give Your angels special charge over my children to accompany and defend and preserve them. I believe they find favor, good understanding and high esteem in Your sight Lord, and in the sight of man. I confess that my children are disciples taught of the Lord and obedient to Your will. Great is their peace and undisturbed composure. I believe I receive wisdom and counsel in bringing up my children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. And Your Word declares that when they are old they will not depart from it. So, I commit them into Your keeping and I know and have confident trust that they are watched over and blessed of the Lord all the days of their lives, in Jesus' Name. Amen. Scripture References from The Amplified Bible: Mark 11:23; Isaiah 44:3; Proverbs 13:1, 24, 29:17; Isaiah 49:25; Psalm 91:12; Deuteronomy 28:13; Proverbs 3:4; Isaiah 54:13; Proverbs 2:6; Ephesians 6:4; Proverbs 22:6; Deuteronomy 28:6. Also see Psalm 127:3-5; Jeremiah 1:12; Isaiah 55:11, not included in prayer A Prayer for Our Government Father, in Jesus' Name, I give thanks for our country and it's government. I hold up in prayer before You the men and women in positions of authority. I pray for all people in authority over us in any way. I pray that the Spirit of the Lord rests upon them. I believe that skillful and godly wisdom has entered into the hearts of our leaders and knowledge is pleasant to them. Discretion watches over them; understanding keeps them and delivers them from the way of evil and from evil men. Your Word declares that 'blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.' I receive Your blessing and declare with my mouth that Your people dwell safely in this land and that they prosper abundantly. It is written in Your Word that the heart of the king is in the hand of the Lord and that You turn it whichever way You desire. I believe the heart of our leader is in Your hand and that his decisions are divinely directed of the Lord. I give thanks unto You that the good news of the gospel is published in our land. The Word of the Lord prevails and grows mightily in the hearts and lives of the people. I give thanks for this land and the leaders You have given to us, in Jesus' Name. I proclaim that Jesus is Lord over my country. Amen. Scripture References: I Timothy 2:1-2; Proverbs 2:11-12. The Amplified Bible- Psalm 33:12; Proverbs 21:1. Also see Jeremiah 1:12 not included in prayer To Walk in the Perfect Peace of God Father, in Jesus' Name, I thank You that Your peace is my covenant right in Christ Jesus. I will keep my mind fixed on You Lord and trust in You and You will keep me in perfect peace. I will not fret or have anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, I will continue to make my wants known to You, Father. And Your peace, which transcends all understanding, shall garrison and mount guard over my mind and heart in Christ Jesus. I fix my mind only on that which is worthy of reverence, honorable, just, pure, lovely, kind and gracious. If there is anything worthy of praise, I will think on and weigh and take account only of these things. I will let the peace of God rule in my heart. As I do, I believe that my calm and undisturbed heart and mind are life and health to my physical body. I humble myself under the mighty hand of God, casting all of my concerns and anxieties on Him once and for all, because I know that He cares for me affectionately. I thank You, Father, that You have not given me a spirit of timidity, of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear. The spirit I have of You is of power and love and of a calm and well balanced mind, of discipline and self control. You, Lord, are on my side; I will not fear. What can men do to me? You, Lord, are my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear or dread? You, Lord, are the refuge and stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? I love Your law, 0 Lord; nothing shall offend me or make me stumble; I walk in great peace, in Jesus' Name, Amen. Scripture References: Isaiah 26:3. The Amplified Bible- Philippians 4:6-8; Colossians 3:15; Proverbs 14:30; 1 Peter 5:6-7; 2 Timothy 1:7; Psalms 118:6,119:165. Walking in the Wisdom and Guidance of the Holy Spirit Father, in the Name of Jesus, I realize that as a believer, my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. My acknowledgment of His presence on a daily basis makes my faith in Him effectual. I believe that You, heavenly Father, are leading me and guiding me by the Holy Spirit through my spirit and illuminating my mind. As I yield to the Holy Spirit, I believe that my steps are ordered of the Lord. Committing and trusting myself wholly to His guidance, I expect Him to cause my thoughts to become agreeable to His will, and so shall my plans be established and succeed. I trust in the Lord with all my heart and lean not on my own understanding. As I acknowledge Him, He directs me in paths of righteousness. I confess that as I become more God inside minded, I can more easily recognize the inward witness of the Holy Spirit. I hear the voice of the Good Shepherd, and a stranger's voice I will not follow. I am aware that my spirit is the candle of the Lord. I meditate in the Word day and night, not letting it depart from my mouth. I test my inward witness with the Word, for the Spirit and the Word agree. I am quick to act on the Word, as well as the prompting of my spirit. I am not a hearer only, but a doer. Therefore, I am blessed in all my deeds. Amen. Scripture References: 1 Thessalonians 5:23; 1 Corinthians 6:19; Philemon 6; John 16.13, Romans 8:14; Psalm 3 7.23; Proverbs 16:3, 3:5-6; Psalm 23:3; Romans 8:16; John 1027; Proverbs 20.27, Romans 8:5,8.2; Joshua 1:8; 1 John 5:7; James 1.25. A Prayer for Your Finances Heavenly Father, I have chosen Jesus as the Lord of my life and I seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, believing that the material things I need will be supplied. I choose for my character and moral disposition to be free from the love of money, greed, lust and craving for earthly possessions. I am satisfied with my present circumstances and with what I have, being confident because You have promised that You will not in any way fail me, nor leave me without support. I am confident in Your faithfulness, that You will never leave me, nor forsake me, nor leave me helpless. I take comfort and am encouraged; I boldly say, 'The Lord is my helper, I will not be seized with alarm, I will not fear, or dread or be terrified.' I believe, Father, that You wish above all things that I prosper and be in health even as my soul prospers. I will meditate in Your Word day and night, not letting it depart from my mouth, keeping it in the midst of my heart, observing to do all that is written therein. I believe that then I shall make my way prosperous and have good success. You have promised that as a doer of the Word I will be blessed in all of my deeds. I am assured that You will withhold no good thing from me as I walk uprightly. The uncompromising are never forsaken. I make it my ambition to live quietly and peacefully, to mind my own affairs, to work with my hands so that I may bear myself correctly and honorably and command the respect of the outside world, being self supporting, dependent on no one and having need of nothing. Knowing through Your Word, Father, that You are the Lord my God who teaches me to profit and who leads me by the way I should go, I will put Your principles to work in my life regarding employment. I choose to apply myself to good deeds to honest labor and honorable employment, so that 1 may be able to meet necessary demands whenever the occasion may require and that I may not live an idle, uncultivated, unfruitful life, in Jesus' Name. I labor so that I may walk honestly toward those who are without. As I give, it is given unto me again; good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will men give into my bosom. I do not sow sparingly and grudgingly, but rather, I sow generously, blessing others. Therefore, I can expect to reap generously and with blessings. Amen. Scripture References: Hebrews 13:5-6; Matthew 6:33; 3 John 2; Psalm 84:11; Joshua 1:8; James 1:25; Psalm 37:25; Luke 6:38; 2 Corinthians 9:6; 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12; Isaiah 48:17; Titus 3:14. Overcoming Bad Habits Father, I believe that my faith becomes effectual - divinely energized - by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in me in Christ Jesus. Through my union with Christ, I am a new creature, old things are passed away and all things have become new. I was crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ lives in me. I was buried with Him in baptism, and raised together with Him by the power of the Holy Spirit so that I might habitually live and behave in newness of life. My old, unrenewed self was nailed to the Cross with Him in order that my body, which is the instrument of sin, might be made ineffective and inactive for evil and that I might no longer be the slave of sin. Just as death no longer has power over Jesus Christ, neither does sin have dominion over me through my union with Him. I consider myself dead to sin and my relation to it broken. I am alive only to God, living in unbroken fellowship with Him, in Christ Jesus. I have been delivered from the control and dominion of darkness and transferred into the kingdom of light. I have been raised together with Christ and am seated together with Him, far above principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world and wicked spirits in high places. Sin shall no longer exert dominion over me, but I have dominion over sin. It is under my feet, in the Name of Jesus, Amen. Scripture References: Philemon 6; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 2.20, Romans 6:4,6, Romans 6:10-11; Colossians 1:1 3; Ephesians 2:6; Ephesians 1:21; Ephesians 6:12; Romans 6:14. Spiritual Growth Heavenly Father, I cease not to pray for _______________ that You may grant him (her) a spirit of wisdom and revelation of insight into mysteries and secrets in the deep and intimate knowledge of God, by having the eyes of his (her) heart flooded with light so that he (she) can know and understand the hope to which You have called him (her), and to know, how rich Your glorious inheritance is in the saints. I pray that _______________ walks, lives and conducts himself (herself) in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to You and desiring to please You in all things, bearing fruit in every good work and steadily growing and increasing in the knowledge of God. I pray that he (she) may be invigorated and strengthened with all power by Your Spirit to exercise every kind of endurance and patience, perseverance and forbearance with joy. I believe that the good work You began in _______________ will continue, right up to the time of Jesus' return, perfecting it and bringing it to its full completion in him (her), in Jesus' Name. Amen.

Prayer for Forgiveness

A teacher of the Jewish law posed a question to Jesus. "Which commandment is the greatest of all?"" Jesus replied that it is to "love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’" (Mark 12:28-30 WEB) and the second is to "Love your neighbour as yourself" (Mark 12:31 WEB). Forgiveness is an integral part of love. We can not truely be free to love somebody if we hold resentment or bitterness in our hearts towards them. Equally, we can not be free to love ourselves if we have not forgiven ourselves - if we are carrying disappointment, guilt or anger about ourselves.
Scripture commands us to receive God's forgiveness, and to be ready to extend this forgiveness to others, and ourselves.

The act of confession - confessing our sins to each other, has a long tradition in church history. Once you have prayed the prayers at the bottom of this page you may find it helpful talk with somebody that you trust and be open with them about the issues that you face.
"Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed".
James 5:16 (WEB)

A Heart That Forgives
a beautiful song about forgiveness by Kevin Levar. A request to God to be like Him - to be a heart that forgives.

good quote on forgiveness

"To err is human, to forgive, divine."
(Alexander Pope, English Poet, 1688-1744)

prayer for the forgiveness of sins

Lord, I'm in that place again
On my knees
Laying my life out before You
Thank you that on the cross you cried
"It is finished"
You have done it
Forgiveness is complete
I can live forever in Your grace
Forever in Your love

So I ask now for Your forgiveness
For the wrongs that I have done
And the things that I have neglected
I ask for Your forgiveness
For the people I have hurt along the way
And those who I have failed to love as You love
I ask for your forgiveness

I receive Your forgiveness
And resolve in my heart
That with Your strength
I determine not to make these errors again
I receive Your forgiveness
And by the power of Your Holy Spirit
I walk away from everything I know to be wrong
And embrace everything I know about You
For the kingdom, the power and the glory
Are always and forever Yours
Amen

(a modern Christian prayer for forgiveness)

"When you forgive, you in no way change the past - but you sure do change the future"
(Bernard Meltzer, Radio Host, 1916-1998)

Areas of your life that might need forgiveness

• family relationships
(mother/father/child/marriage partner)
• friends
(work colleagues/boss/employees/church relationships)
• acquaintances
(e.g. professionals that you have sought help from such as nurses, doctors or accountants but have been hurt by)

Why it is important to forgive

• It releases us to live our lives. No matter how deep the pain you may feel from being wronged, living with unforgiveness in your life can cause untold mental pain and (even) lead to physical illness.

• Sometimes we need to forgive ourselves. It may be that you have let somebody (or yourself) down - this can lead to inner frustation and anger with yourself, and guilt. Forgiveness releases the heart to walk away from these negative feelings.

• Love keeps no record of wrongs (1 Cor 13:5). Forgiveness needs to be a regular activity - even daily if necessary. How many times should I forgive my brother (or children!)? Not seven but seventy times seven - it's something that we need to keep on doing.

please use the following prayer and bring to mind anybody who you need to forgive:-

prayer about forgiving others

Lord, I bring to mind (name)
I bring him/her before You

I feel hurt by them
Right now I confess any negative feelings I have about them
I forgive the wrongs they have done towards me
For any deliberate or unintentional things they have done
That have caused me pain
In the best way that I know how, I fully forgive them

I release them to You

Now that I have forgiven (name)
I choose not to hold any grudges towards him/her
Thank you that as I am praying now
You are freeing my inner world to live again
Free from resentment, pain and bitterness
Filled with joy, freedom and love
Amen

(a modern prayer for forgiving others)

Anglican prayer for forgiveness

Almighty God, our heavenly Father:
We have sinned against you,
through our own fault,
in thought, and word, and deed,
and in what we have left undone.
For the sake of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ,
forgive us all our offenses;
and grant that we may serve you
in newness of life,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.

(From "An order for Compline", 1979 Book of Common Prayer, Protestant Episcopal Church in the USA)

Bible verses about forgiveness of others

Christ commands us to be active in helping our enemies (probably the opposite of how we would naturally react!):-

"But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you..."

Matthew 5:44 (WEB)

Paul in his letter to the Roman Church reiterated the importance of loving your enemy:-

"But if one who has hate for you is in need of food or of drink, give it to him, for in so doing you will put coals of fire on his head. Do not let evil overcome you, but overcome evil by good"

Romans 12:20 (BBE)

We are to keep on forgiving one another:-

"Then Peter came and said to him, Lord, what number of times may my brother do wrong against me, and I give him forgiveness? till seven times? Jesus says to him, I say not to you, Till seven times; but, Till seventy times seven"

Matthew 18:21-22 (BBE)

We are to forgive each other, just as God has forgiven us:-

"...forgive us our sins,
as we have forgiven those who sin against us."

Matthew 6:12 (NLT)

"...bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do"

Colossians 3:13 (WEB)

Jesus is our role model when it comes to forgiveness:-

"When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified him there with the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they are doing.""

Luke 23:33-34 (WEB)

Prayer of Forgiveness: A Valuable Gift

A prayer of forgiveness is something we all seek at some point in life. Forgiveness is a valuable gift that is neither easily obtained, nor easily given. Forgiveness is essential for life; it frees us from past wrongs and gives us hope for the future. It is for forgiveness sake that Jesus Christ came to earth to die for mankind.

Prayer of Forgiveness: Made Possible by Jesus Christ

The prayer of forgiveness is a prayer that is offered up to God. Though we may directly hurt each other, all of our trespasses ultimately hurt God. You may wonder how this is possible. How can our shortcomings hurt the omnipotent Creator of the universe? Does God even care? In Genesis 6; we find that God Himself actually grieved over all the wrongs that man had inflicted upon each other: "Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And He was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart" (Genesis 6:5-6).

All knowing, God grieves even at the mere thought of evil. Thus, ultimate forgiveness must also come from God. However, because of His justice, forgiveness cannot be freely given. Every wrong must be accounted for in order for God to be a just judge. Jesus Christ died on the cross at Calvary in our place so that our sins may be forgiven. His suffering paid for our transgressions. "For this is My blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins" (Matthew 26:28).

In His love, God knew that our conscience needed to be freed from guilt and condemnation. He knew that forgiveness of sins was our greatest need. In the ultimate act of love, God not only suffered the pain of our wrongs, but also paid for their consequences in order that we may have forgiveness offered to us when we sin. All we need to do is to accept His free gift of forgiveness.

Prayer of Forgiveness: Ask God for Forgiveness

Perhaps you have stumbled upon this web page looking for a prayer of forgiveness to soothe a tormented soul. Or maybe you are struggling with trying to forgive another for deeply hurting you. For all who accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, forgiveness has been freely given. If we acknowledge our wrongs and ask for forgiveness, God will forgive us - no questions asked: "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).

If we reject Jesus, in essence, we reject God's gift of forgiveness. We are in fact saying that we do not wish to be reconciled with God (1 John 1:10). Though it is our free choice to not accept forgiveness from God, we will ultimately be accountable for all the sins we have committed at the end of this life. It is God's deep desire to be reconciled with you. "For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). If you desire to be truly forgiven, consider what Jesus said and sincerely accept Him as your Lord and Savior. You will be forgiven and God will begin a transforming work in your life.

Prayer of Forgiveness: Receive a New Life
The prayer of forgiveness gives us a new hope and a new beginning. All our sins are wiped away by God. "For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more" (Hebrews 8:12).

If you understand that you are a sinner, and you believe that Jesus Christ came as the one and only Redeemer of sin, then you understand the prayer of forgiveness. The question is – are you ready to implement the prayer, by receiving God’s gift of His Son, Jesus Christ? If so, believe in Christ, repent of your sins, and commit the rest of your life to Him as Lord:

"Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38).

If you decided to receive Jesus today, welcome to God's family. Now, as a way to grow closer to Him, the Bible tells us to follow up on our commitment.
Get baptized as commanded by Christ.
Tell someone else about your new faith in Christ.
Spend time with God each day. It does not have to be a long period of time. Just develop the daily habit of praying to Him and reading His Word. Ask God to increase your faith and your understanding of the Bible.
Seek fellowship with other followers of Jesus. Develop a group of believing friends to answer your questions and support you.
Find a local gathering where you can worship God.

Father, I know that I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from YOU. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life toward YOU. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite YOU YAHWEH to become the GOD of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

Psalm 51 Good News Translation (GNT)

A Prayer for Forgiveness[a]
51 Be merciful to me, O God,
because of your constant love.
Because of your great mercy
wipe away my sins!
2 Wash away all my evil
and make me clean from my sin!
3 I recognize my faults;
I am always conscious of my sins.
4 I have sinned against you—only against you—
and done what you consider evil.
So you are right in judging me;
you are justified in condemning me.
5 I have been evil from the day I was born;
from the time I was conceived, I have been sinful.
6 Sincerity and truth are what you require;
fill my mind with your wisdom.
7 Remove my sin, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
8 Let me hear the sounds of joy and gladness;
and though you have crushed me and broken me,
I will be happy once again.
9 Close your eyes to my sins
and wipe out all my evil.
10 Create a pure heart in me, O God,
and put a new and loyal spirit in me.
11 Do not banish me from your presence;
do not take your holy spirit away from me.
12 Give me again the joy that comes from your salvation,
and make me willing to obey you.
13 Then I will teach sinners your commands,
and they will turn back to you.
14 Spare my life, O God, and save me,[b]
and I will gladly proclaim your righteousness.
15 Help me to speak, Lord,
and I will praise you.
16 You do not want sacrifices,
or I would offer them;
you are not pleased with burnt offerings.
17 My sacrifice is a humble spirit, O God;
you will not reject a humble and repentant heart.
18 O God, be kind to Zion and help her;
rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then you will be pleased with proper sacrifices
and with our burnt offerings;
and bulls will be sacrificed on your altar.

Psalm 51:1 HEBREW TITLE: A psalm by David, after the prophet Nathan had spoken to him about his adultery with Bathsheba.

prayers for suicidal beings

If you feel suicidal:

Lord YAH, I come before You with a heavy heart. I feel so much and yet sometimes I feel nothing at all. I don't know where to turn, who to talk to, or how to deal with the things going on in my life. You see everything, Lord. You know everything, Lord. Yet when I seek you it is so hard to feel You here with me. Lord, help me through this. I don't see any other way to get out of this. There is no light at the end of my tunnel, yet everyone says You can show it to me. Lord, help me find that light. Let it be Your light. Give me someone to help. Let me feel You with me. Lord, let me see what You provide and see an alternative to taking my life. Let me feel Your blessings and comfort. In YASHUA's name. Amen.

if our brethrens feels suicidal:

Lord YAH, we come before You with a heavy heart for our brethrens. They are struggling so much right now with the things happening in their lives. We know You can be their greatest comfort. we know You can step in and make a difference. Show us how we can best help them. Give us the words and actions that will keep them from taking that ultimate step of suicide, Lord. Let them see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that suicide is not the route to take. Lord, let Your presence be felt in their life and let Your comfort be what they need. In YASHUA's name. Amen.

prayer for hope

Lord, thank You so much for all the blessings You have provided in my life. I have so much, and I know it is all because of You. I ask You today to continue to provide me with these blessings and to provide me with the opportunities I need to continue to do Your work here. You always stand beside me. You provide me with a future full of your love, blessings, and guidance. I know that, no matter how bad things get, You will always be by my side. I know I may not see you. I know I may not feel You, but I thank You for giving us Your Word that tells us you are here. You know my dreams, Lord, and I know it is a lot to ask to realize those dreams, but I ask that you hear my prayer of hope. I would like to think that my hopes and dreams are all part of Your plans for me, but I trust that You always know better. I put my dreams in Your hands to mold and fit to Your will. I surrender my hopes to You. In Your holy name, Amen.

that is so apartheid, or ike what, 2 standard caring jsut caus GOD put in our fate some being in distress, which means, you wo'nt pray if you do'nt have a suicidal or obese or being who self harms or is bulimic ect in your existanc,e you pray for one of the, jsut one, because you got one in your life, so if you had known nobody who is anorexi, self harms is a drug addict ec,t you would never pray for all the ones who self harms who take drugs of the earth ect, just caring caus somebody who got one of these problems in our lives is jsut selfish, just like beign confined in our little bulle, not thinking earth, just thinking the beings in our own life, and its just one suicidal, or one oebse, we do'nt even tak this opportunity to pray for all the oebse or suicidals of the earth, that is evil innit GOD

prayer for healing obsession

God please help all animal and human living on earth to heal the thoughts in their minds so that they are about pure and honorable things in our lives. Please help us to move forward from our obsession/addiction so that we can function better in life again so we can live out Your will and so we are able to give back to You for all the things You have done for us in our lives. In YAHUSHUA's name. Amen .

evening prayer to God the Father

O eternal God and Ruler of all creation, You have allowed us to reach this hour. Forgive the sins we have committed this day by word, deed or thought. Purify us, O YAHWEH, from every spiritual and physical stain. Grant that we may rise from this sleep to glorify You by our deeds throughout our entire lifetime, and that we be victorious over every spiritual and physical enemy. Deliver us, O YAHWEH, from all vain thoughts and from evil desires, for Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and ever, and forever. Amen.

Our YAHWEH revealed to St. Josefa Menendez, "During the night, you will rest in My Heart. My Heart will listen to the beats of yours, which will be so many acts of love and desire. Thus even while you are sleeping, you will bring back to Me souls who offend Me. Ask forgiveness for the whole world, especially for those that know Me and yet sin. Offer yourself in reparation." Below is the resulting prayer.

Eternal Father, I desire to rest in Your Heart this night. I make the intention of offering to Thee every beat of my heart, joining to them as many acts of love and desire. I pray that even while I am asleep, I will bring back to Thee the souls that offend Thee. I ask forgiveness for the whole world, especially for those who know You and yet sin. I offer Thee my every breath and heart beat as a prayer of reparation. Amen.

obsession : a thought that you can’t get out of your mind. When religion and spirituality are central in a person’s life, obsessive-compulsive symptoms tend to be noticed there.  The term, scruples is often used to describe obsessive-compulsive disorder manifested in religious ways. For Catholics, going to confession every time a simple mistake is made because of a fear of hell, is a scruple.

COMMIT YOUR WORKS TO GOD , AND YOUR THOUGHTS WILL BE ESTABLISHED.
FOR I KNOW THE THOUGHTS THAT I THINK TOWARD YOU, SAYS GOD, THOUGHTS OF PEACE AND NOT OF EVIL, TO GIVE YOU A FUTURE AND A HOPE.

Proverbs 16:3; Jeremiah 29:11.

I adore You, my God, and I love You with all my heart. I thank YOU for having created me, for having made me a Christian, and for having preserved me this day. Pardon me for the evil I have done today. If I have done anything good, be pleased to accept it. Protect me while I take my rest and deliver me from all dangers. May your grace be always with me. Amen.

Oh YAHWEH, we pray you to visit this home and drive from it all snares of the enemy. Let Your holy angels dwell in it to preserve us in peace; and let Your blessing be always upon us. Through Christ our Savior. Amen.

Protect us, GOD, as we stay awake; watch over us as we sleep, that awake, we may keep watch with Christ, and asleep, rest in his peace.

Prayer of Praise at Sundown

O gracious light,
pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praised, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of Life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

For Your earth nation

Father, I'm praying for our nation that was founded on Your principles and was once devoted to You. Father, You have promised in Your Word that if we, Your people who are called by Your name—we Christians, the church—will humble ourselves and pray, seek Your face and turn from our wicked ways, You will hear and heal our land. (2 Chronicles 7:14) It is we, Your children, who must come in repentance, for those who are lost cannot even understand their sins; such things must be spiritually discerned. Grant us repentance. Show us where our hearts have turned away from You. Give the lost to Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:14; Acts 5:31; Ezekiel 6:9; John 18:9) You are a refuge for the poor and needy, a shelter from the storm, a shade from the heat. But You are also our God who deals with Your people as Your vineyard. When we go our own way, bearing bad fruit instead of good, You have said You will take away our hedge and break down our wall. (Isaiah 25:4; 5:1–6) Have mercy on Your wayward people. We pray in hope because of Your great love, knowing that Your compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. Help us examine and test our ways—and return to You. (Lamentations 3:22–23, 40) In Jesus' name, amen.

evening prayer to GOD

O YAHWEH, most merciful Comforter: The Holy Spirit proceed from YOU Father in a manner beyond our understanding. Come, I beseech You, and take up your abode in my heart. Purify and cleanse me from all sin, and sanctify my soul. Cleanse it from every impurity, water its dryness, melt its coldness, and save it from its sinful ways. Make me truly humble and resigned, that I may be pleasing to You, and that You might abide with me forever. Most Blessed GOD, most Amiable GOD, enlighten me. O Rapturous Joy of Paradise, Fount of Purest Delight, My God, give yourself to me and kindle in my innermost soul the fire of Your love. My YAHWEH, instruct, direct, and defend me in all things. Give me strength against all immoderate fears and against despondency. Bestow upon me a true faith, a firm hope, and a sincere and a perfect love. Grant that I always do Thy Most Gracious Will. In the name of CHRIST.Amen.

Watch, O YAHWEH , with those who wake, or watch, or weep tonight, and give Your Angels and Saints charge over those who sleep. Tend Your sick ones, O GOD . Rest Your weary ones, Bless Your dying ones, Soothe Your suffering ones, pity Your afflicted ones, Shield Your joyous ones, And all for Your love's sake. In Christ's name .Amen.

God heal our thought and minds; we're going to pray for you all for this healing if it has not already happened. you are in bondage. we can begin to work towards healing by bringing every thought captive and do our best to replace negative thought with positve thoughts.

Psychological Healing in the Catholic Mystic Tradition

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Catholic Psychotherapy

IN ORDER to provide a remedy for something, it is necessary to understand its cause and its purpose. So let’s begin there.

Understanding Causality

we know from scientific research that the brain and the mind have a mutual influence on each other and that even though mental disorders may have a material cause in brain neurochemistry they can also have a final cause in psychological activity. Think, for a moment about the building in which you may now be sitting. We can ask, “What is the cause of this building?” just as you might ask about the cause of OCD. Well, in his philosophy, Aristotle (Physics, ii, 3) described several different types of causes that are relevant even today.

The material cause refers to “that out of which a thing comes to be and persists.” In this sense, for example, the steel and concrete and glass—the materials—are the cause of a building.

The formal cause refers to the form—or plan, or pattern—by which the essence of something is stated. In this sense, the design and blueprints are the cause of a building.

The efficient cause refers to “the primary source of the change or coming to rest.” In this sense, the construction company is the cause of a building.

The final cause refers to “that for the sake of which” a thing is done. In this sense, the owner’s desire is the cause of a building. As Aristotle himself said, “it follows that there are several causes of the same thing.” In psychological practice this means that symptoms of OCD, for example, which, in scientific [1] medical language, might be “caused” by a chemical imbalance in the brain (material cause) can, at the same time, be “caused” by repressed anger (final cause). Psychologically, locating and treating this unconscious final cause of the symptoms can be the most critical aspect of the treatment because it can have a curative effect on the other causes as well. Treating only the material cause, however—as if it were the rational and only cause—will leave the final cause untreated and free to continue exerting its harmful influence.

Unconscious Guilt

In this regard, psychological research into early infant development has shown that experiences of rage, and subsequent feelings of guilt, happen to us all right from early infancy. Every parent will make mistakes in empathic bonding with a child, and every child will feel emotionally hurt by those mistakes and will crave the satisfaction of revenge: to hurt the other “as I have been hurt.”

Most children manage to work through this guilt intuitively and have no lasting problems from it. Some children, however, because of subtle, guilt-producing family dynamics, will grow up lacking a social structure of deep faith and trust in God’s mercy, and will feel so guilty about having this desire for revenge that they try to hide it from others—and from themselves.

Moreover, these children will more likely than not also find that puberty becomes a troubling time. Lacking clear and honest explanations of sexuality, and lacking guidance about and protection from sexual feelings, budding adolescents can develop agonizing guilt about their sexuality.

Therefore, both psychological theory and clinical practice lead us to the understanding that OCD, at its core, is a neurotic way of coping with feelings of guilt. It’s similar to Lady Macbeth, in Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, crying, “Out, damned spot!” as she tries compulsively to rub the stain of Duncan’s murder from her hands.[2]

Now, unlike Lady Macbeth, you may not have actually killed someone, but the unconscious motive for your compulsive rituals can be found in obsessive thoughts or mental images of hostility and violence because someone has injured you, insulted you, obstructed you, or hurt you in some other emotional, physical, or material way. Moreover, this hurt is more often than not a matter of what someone has failed to do for you, rather than what a person has done to you.[3]

To someone untrained in the psychology of the unconscious, it may seem difficult to understand this logically, but whatever you are afraid of doing is what some part of you unconsciously desires.[4] Maybe you have to check the stove in endless repetition to make sure you have turned it off, because you’re afraid of starting a fire. Well, unconsciously, some part of you probably desires to set the whole house on fire to get revenge for having been cheated by someone. Maybe you have to wash your hands in endless repetition because they feel unclean. Well, unconsciously, maybe some part of you probably desires to use those hands to strangle someone who has neglected your needs in some way. Maybe you have to keep checking to make sure you backed up the data on the computer at work because you’re afraid the work project might fail. Well, unconsciously, maybe some part of you probably desires the project to fail because you’re unhappy with your job—and on and on it goes.

Most likely you don’t like to talk about these thoughts and fantasies, or the suppressed desire for revenge—perhaps going all the way back to infancy—that drives them, because you find them so repugnant that you want to neutralize them before they reach full conscious awareness.[5]

AN EXAMPLE

Transient thoughts (that is, fantasies) of hurting someone are actually very common—so common, in fact, that they could be called “normal” human responses to feeling irritated by someone.

For example, a mother holding her infant while standing at the edge of Niagara Falls could suddenly think of throwing the child into the water. Now, such a thought could be an unconscious reaction to the mother’s irritation at the responsibility of caring for her new child.

But does having the thought mean that the mother is actually in danger of carrying it out? Not at all. The thought, like any fantasy, is just the result of a juxtaposition of images in the moment—the water and the infant—that suggest the intellectual possibility that the infant could be thrown into the water.

So, if the mother were to interpret the fantasy, she could say to herself, “Ah, yes, a child is a lot of responsibility, isn’t she? Yet, with Christ’s help and guidance, I can accept the task.”

But if the mother fears the fantasy, she can deceive herself into believing that the fantasy never occurred, and she can develop obsessive-compulsive defenses to protect herself from the guilt of feeling resentment toward her child. Then, later that night, she might feel the compulsive need to spend hours rearranging the clothes in her closet according to the most elaborate of rituals, to appease the nagging belief that if she doesn’t do it—and do it perfectly—her baby will die.

In the OCD response to guilt, therefore, you attempt to keep your guilt secret and to resolve it through your own superstitious efforts. You create rituals, and you unconsciously make mistakes in carrying them out, and you feel guilty about it all. But it’s all an artificially created guilt, taken in controlled doses, that serves to hide the real guilt of your anger at persons who have hurt you somehow.

Healing Guilt
Through Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment

In the current medical realm, expert consensus guidelines indicate that Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), not medication, is the initial treatment choice for OCD. For OCD treatment to be in harmony with Christianity, however, the treatment must not just suppress the symptoms, it must teach you to live a holy lifestyle purged of vindictive hostility. Rather than live in guilty fear about your fantasies, you can learn to face the anger behind the fantasies with trust in God’s protection.

This treatment has several parts: stopping compulsive behaviors, stopping obsessive thoughts, purging “revenge” from your life, and understanding that your salvation depends not on your perfectionon but on your willngness to grow in love.

1. Stopping Compulsive Behaviors

The basis for all CBT treatment for OCD is a concept called Exposure and Response Prevention. This involves exposing yourself to what you fear, and then deliberately preventing the defensive OCD response. In plain English, this all comes down to forcing yourself to not do what you fear not doing (such as not washing your hands when you touch a door handle or not organizing your closet as a response to thoughts that someone will be harmed if you don’t organize your closet).

The psychological core of Exposure and Response Prevention is to learn that distressing feelings and thoughts are not actually dangerous. The part of your brain that pushes you into an OCD impulse when you experience guilt is a primitive part of the brain that understands behavior, not language, and that has been conditioned to equate emotional distress with physical danger. When your body feels the first distress of guilt, your brain interprets it as a danger and sends out the signal to pump out fight-or-flight chemicals that cause physiological arousal.

Now, if you believe that there is a danger, and that you have to perform some OCD ritual to fight against it, you only encourage your brain to keep on pumping out more fight-or-flight chemicals, and eventually this process escalates and you succumb to the OCD impulse. Moreover, you can’t stop the impulse by telling yourself to stop it. As I said before, the part of your brain responsible for the OCD impulses doesn’t understand language. It only understands behavior—and this brings us to the real solution to the problem.

The only way to stop the OCD impulse is to act in a way that tells your brain that there is no danger. At this point, you must deliberately prevent the defensive OCD response. Then, instead of fast, shallow breathing take long, slow, deep breaths. Instead of staring around in a frenzy, close your eyes. Instead of clenching your muscles, loosen them. This behavior will tell your brain that you are not in danger, and subsequently your brain will shut down the fight-or-flight chemicals—and you will experience a calm relief.

When done in the context of formal psychotherapy, this process usually entails in vivo exposure; that is, having the psychotherapist present with you to encourage you—“holding your hand,” so to speak—as you encounter actual feared situations and force yourself right then and there to overcome old behaviors.

So what can you do in the Christian self-help context?

Well, as for encouragement, know that “the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ is the Father of compassion and the God of all encouragement” (2 Corinthians 1:3).

Furthermore, trust in God to hold your hand: “Since my heart was embittered and my soul deeply wounded, I was stupid and could not understand; I was like a brute beast in your presence. Yet I am always with you; you take hold of my right hand” (Psalm 73:21-23).

The end result of this is that you can use your free will to resist the performance of all compulsive actions and that you can trust in God to overcome the superstitious fear of not performing them.

So, you ask, “What is trust in God?” and “What does it mean to overcome superstitious fear?”

Trust in God

To trust in God is to believe in God’s protection. Full trust in God is composed of two separate but interrelated components: trust in God’s justice, and trust in God’s providence.[6]

•

Trust in God’s Justice. We have all encountered individuals who commit offenses and seem to “get away with it.” Although the irritation that we feel is justified, we can also be drawn into the desire to take matters into our own hands and get revenge. If we remember, however, that every crime—every sin—every offense against love—that a person commits is an offense against God that will be accounted for during his or her judgment at death, and will be paid for either in Purgatory or hell, then we can understand that no one can evade God’s perfect justice.

To trust in God’s justice, then, is to set aside our anger for the injuries inflicted on us because we believe that God administers His own justice according to His will.

•

Trust in God’s Providence. Some individuals have the mistaken belief that “trust in God” means to sit around doing nothing in the expectation that God will do everything for us. But this false belief is based in an avoidance of our taking full responsibility for living holy lives that bear spiritual fruits.

To trust in God’s providence, therefore, does not mean that we do nothing; it means that we believe that, in answer to our prayers, God will guide, protect, and encourage us as we take responsibility for developing and using our talents to serve God.

Overcoming Superstitious Fear

You feel the urge to perform a compulsive act because you accept the belief  that something bad will happen if you do not perform a ritual. But understand that a belief is not reality; work to overcome this false belief  with a true belief  in God’s protection. Trust in God that life is not based in superstition. When that inner OCD “voice” responds, “Come on, John. I’m only warning you for your own good. Your fears are perfectly reasonable. So be reasonable and go back and complete the ritual right now, or you’ll be sorry!” say what Christ Himself said when hearing something contrary to His mission: “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an obstacle to Me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do” (Matthew 16:23).

2. Stopping Obsessive Thoughts

As creatures of language, we all think constantly. We think more than we need to think, and we think more often than not about frivolous and spiritually useless things. As harmful as this is to a Christian life, some individuals not only think constantly but they also ruminate and dwell upon their thoughts, and then they feel guilty about it all. Once a negative thought gets in your mind, it can torment you for hours and days. The guilt can be agonizing.

Obsessive thoughts, therefore, are self-propagating. The more they breed, the more they drive you away from spiritually healthy things, such as prayer, and the more they separate you from God.

There is only one solution: drive away these obsessive thoughts[7] with one constant, holy thought. Recite the Jesus Prayer constantly.

The prayer is simple: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon me.

The technique, too, is simple: recite the prayer constantly.[8]

Still, as simple as it is, it’s hard work. No sooner will you start to pray than your mind will wander and you will be off in your own thoughts. Once you realize that your mind has wandered from the prayer, stop thinking and return to the prayer. But be gentle with yourself. Don’t blame yourself for failing. Don’t try to analyze what happened. Just immediately stop thinking and return to the prayer. Then repeat this process over and over.

You have to hold in your heart the will to do this. But if you desire it more than anything else—more even than the desire to stay stuck in your fear and disability—you can do it. If you love God, and if you love your soul, you can do it.

3. Purging Revenge From Your Life

We are all surrounded by a social world that literally feeds upon hostility—anger on anger, hatred on hatred, lawsuit on lawsuit, weapon on weapon, death on death—enslaving the unwary to a subversive lust for anger and revenge.

Endeavor, therefore, to detach yourself from these social evils.

Do this by purging revenge from your life. Stop watching TV and movies, stop playing video games, stop listening to secular music, stop reading magazines and newspapers, stop watching competitive sports (and stop playing them, if you already do). For the sake of your soul, put all these things out of your mind.

Even though these things are accepted hook, line, and sinker by our secular culture—and even by those who claim to be Christian—they have no spiritual value and are just breeding grounds for the desire to get revenge on others. The same for addictions (smoking, drinking, drugs, obesity, gambling, eroticism); these things breed revenge because by hurting yourself your unconscious intent is to sabotage authority; e.g., your parents and God.

The more that you can purge revenge from your life, the more that you are able to desire the holy rather than desire worldly pleasures, and the more that you can pray constantly rather than fill your head with worldly entertainment, the more progress you will make in overcoming your unconscious slavery to anger, and the more progress you will make in overcoming your superstitious attempts to wash away your hidden anger.

4. Salvation Depends on Love, not on Perfection

Christ chose ordinary men, not scholars and theologians, to be His Apostles and disciples. Why? To demonstrate that the Church He was establishing would grow through God’s grace, not through mere human intelligence. So keep in mind that your salvation depends on your willingness to grow in love, not on your human perfection.

Understand, therefore, that intrusive thoughts and fantasies will not, in themselves, obstruct your salvation. The real danger to your salvation comes from your failure to trust in God’s providence and justice (see above); in so far as you dwell upon fear of your fantasies, they will become temptations more than distractions, and you will feel compelled to cast aside love so as to take matters into your own hands to fight temptation with your own intelligence—and you will lose.

When you are praying and distractions interfere with your concentration, say to yourself, “It’s OK. I don’t have to repeat the prayer until I get it perfect. My intent is love; I don’t have to be perfect to love.”

When fantasies intrude into your mind, if you try to fight them they will only get more intense, and you will become more anxious. Instead of resisting, say to yourself, “It’s OK. Flashes of fantasies are products of my intellect, not my will. Let them be. I don’t really intend to carry out these thoughts in actions. My intent is love; I don’t have to be perfect in getting rid of intruding thoughts. So let’s return to the Jesus Prayer.”

Summary

With practice, as you learn to live a genuine Catholic life—detached from the world, trusting totally in God, chaste in body and heart, free from all anger and desire for revenge—you will have no ugly beliefs, thoughts, and fantasies to fear, and therefore no guilt to hide. From then on, whenever any fantasies arise in your mind, you can see them not as ugly and fearful, but simply as warnings that someone has hurt you somehow. Then, knowing you’ve been hurt, and feeling the pain, you can forgive the person who hurt you, and you can turn to God in faith and prayer, believing in and trusting in His protection:

When the just cry out, the LORD hears
   and rescues them from all distress.
The LORD is close to the broken hearted,
   saves those whose spirit is crushed.
Many are the troubles of the just
   but the LORD delivers from them all.

—Psalm 34:18-20

Notes.

1. Note that the whole problem with science is that it is trapped within the box of sin, and, no matter how powerful its instruments, it simply cannot see outside the box.

2. William Shakespeare, Macbeth, Act V, Scene I.

3. This is why your anger can be so easily denied. Rather than stinging like a direct insult, anger resulting from someone’s failure often lurks in the shadows of the unconscious.

4. Imagine that, as you are about to receive from the chalice at Mass, a thought occurs to you: “I could drop this and spill the Precious Blood all over the floor.” This does not mean that you would actually like to drop the chalice, but only that your intellect recognizes the possibility that you could do it. If you push the thought out of your mind and don’t worry about it, everything will be fine. But if you dwell on the thought, allowing it to keep repeating in your mind, then you have an indication that you secretly desire to drop the chalice. In this case, the desire—manifested by the satisfaction of dwelling on the thought—is an expression of your anger at God that in itself derives from your anger at authority in general and which, in turn, specifically derives from anger at your father.

5. In fact, some persons are so good at repressing these fantasies that they will claim—even to the point of vindictive anger—they don’t even have them. This is why OCD is a disorder particularly resistant to traditional treatment.

6. The sad thing for many children is that they lack any living example of trust in God because their parents really do not live a lifestyle of genuine trust in God. Despite what their parents might say with their lips, and despite all their novenas and devotions, the parents’ fundamental psychological attitude is more often than not governed by attachment to the secular ways of the social world around them. When the children look to their parents’ religion, they see only dry rituals and superstitions. The children are wounded by their parents’ hypocrisy. They resent it. They fear it. They secretly hate their parents for denying them any experience of true faith. So when the children feel anxiety or fear because of their anger, they have nothing to protect them. Their obsessive thoughts feel like demons tormenting them. Because they don’t know how to call upon the name of God to defend them (see Psalm 91), they take matters into their own hands by creating their own compulsive rituals to neutralize their anger. It’s as if they unconsciously use psychological symptoms to “show” their parents that the family lacks any meaningful faith.

7. On another page of this website I explain about understanding your fantasies rather than trying to ignore them. This work of understanding is valuable, but even when you have understood your fantasies they will not just grow wings and fly away. Distractions will keep intruding into your mind as long as you live. The advice on the present webpage is therefore intended to help you ward off the distractions you have already understood.

8. You don’t have to be concerned about getting your work done. When you need to think logically, or when you need to pray other prayers, the Jesus Prayer will not interfere. It will cease when you need it to cease; just remember to start it again when you become aware that it has stopped.

Prayer for the Whole World to Belong to Jesus Posted on March 8, 2010 by admin Print Friendly Creator of Heaven and Earth, we surrender the whole universe into your hands. Lord, we pray that very soon there may be only one shepherd and one flock. We pray that all men may believe only in you as their only Lord and Savior. Lord, for this, touch all people all over the world. Father, because of the passion and death of Jesus on the cross and his precious blood, may all come very soon to believe in the One True God. Amen.

Prayer for Peace

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.
I say to you that hear, love your enemies; do good to those who hate you;
bless those who curse you; pray for those who abuse you.
To those who strike you on the cheek, offer the other also;
from those who take away your cloak, do not withhold your coat as well.
Give to everyone who begs from you, and of those who take away your goods,
do not ask them again. As you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.

You promise peace to all who worship God as Father and love his children as brothers and sisters. Guide us in the way of peace. Reconcile us with one another, that we may be reconciled with You. May peace reign in our hearts, and may we be witnesses to the peace you give to all the world. Amen.

A Prayer about Nature and God's Creation

Loving Father and Creator of all we come to you today deeply grateful for your creation.
As we look around us we are amazed at the greatness and majesty of all that you have made.
Nature around us speaks of your greatness - the vast expanse of the sky, the mountains, trees, lakes and streams speak of your great design.
You have given us such beauty in the colors of the rainbow, the beauty of flowers and fields.
Words cannot adequately express the magnificence of all you have created.
We join in praise with the writer of the psalms when he says, 'O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.'
May we show our love and reverence to you, our Lord, by caring for all that you have created. We humbly give you praise and thanks. Catholic Prayer

your creation, which you created and called good. Your covenant with the human
family is remembered in every rainbow in the sky, symbolizing your promise of
love and blessing to every living creature, and to all successive generations. In
Jesus, you invite us to enter into a new covenant, in communion with all who
seek to be faithful to you and to do justice. As people of faith, we are called into
covenant. Your covenant of faithfulness and love extends to the whole creation.
Today we pray for the healing of our planet that present and future generations

Prayer to GOD for the Conversion of the Whole World

Now is the time to pray for the United States of America and the whole world. More than 53 million babies have been aborted in US since Roe Vs Wade. Every single day, 4000 babies are killed by abortion in America. Let us pray and beg Jesus for conversion and change of hearts.

O Holy GOD, who as Our GOD didst aid in the conversion of Mexico from paganism in a most miraculous way, we now beseech thee to bring about in these our times the early conversion of our modern world from its present neo-paganism to the One, Holy, Christian Church of thy divine Son, Jesus Christ, starting in the Americas and extending throughout the entire world, so that soon there may be truly “one fold and one shepherd”, with all governments recognizing the reign of thy Son, Jesus Christ the King. This we ask of the Eternal Father, through Jesus Christ Your Son Our Lord and by thy powerful intercession – all for the salvation of souls, the triumph of the Church and peace in the world. Amen.

Psalm 511
Have mercy on all Your creatures, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you alone, have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are justified in your sentence and blameless when you pass judgment. Indeed, I was born guilty, a sinner when my mother conceived me.

You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have crushed rejoice. Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit.

Healing Prayer of Isaiah 53
Precious Lord Jesus, I thank you for your enduring love. You came into the world to set me free from the power of darkness. You embraced a violent death on the cross to pay the penalty on my behalf. You suffered the scourging at the pillar, taking the sickness of humanity upon your own flesh, so that I could be healed.

I come before you now to place all my sin upon your cross and ask for your precious blood to wash me clean. I place the penalty for my sinfulness, all my sickness, diseases and infirmities upon your cross, and for the sake of your sorrowful passion, I ask to be set free. I accept your sacrifice and receive your gift of reconciliation. I confess your Lordship over every aspect of my life, heart, mind, body, soul and spirit.

Through the power of your cross Lord Jesus, I now resist all forms of sin, sickness and disease. I say to all forms of sickness and disease caused by my own disobedience, that you are not God’s good and perfect will for my life, and I enforce the power of the cross upon you right now.

By the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth, I command all forms of sickness and disease to leave my presence immediately. Jesus bore my infirmities. He was wounded for my transgressions. By his stripes I have been healed. No sickness, pain, death, fear or addiction shall ever lord over me again. The penalty has been paid in full. I have been ransomed and redeemed, sanctified and set free. Amen.

Prayer of Reconciliation
Dear Lord Jesus, for the sake of your sorrowful passion, I ask you to forgive all my sins, especially those that have allowed any form of sickness or disease to enter my body and harm my health. I humbly ask you to send forth the Holy Spirit’s gift of conviction and shine the light of truth into the deepest recesses of my soul, so that I may make a complete act of contrition before you now.

Lord Jesus, please forgive me for all my sins, especially for any unknown and hidden sins. I am heartily sorry for having offended you. I ask forgiveness for all the times I failed to make you Lord over my life. Forgive me for having other gods before you; for buying images, bowing down and serving them; for taking your most holy name in vain and for failing to observe the Sabbath day of rest. Please forgive me for not honoring my father and mother, committing the sin of adultery or abortion, stealing, bearing false witness and coveting my neighbor’s spouse, property and possessions.

Please forgive me for not loving you with my whole heart, mind, body, soul and spirit, for not loving my neighbor as myself and for disrespecting the temple of your Holy Spirit. Please forgive me for not taking better care of my health, for eating unhealthy foods and poisoning my body with chemicals, drugs, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine and any other harmful substance or medication.

Please forgive me for committing the sins of hypocrisy, intolerance, unforgiveness, ungratefulness, disbelief, deception, disobedience, envy, pride, fantasy, fornication, idolatry, impatience, division, dissension, offending others, hard-heartedness, hate, haughtiness, anger, rebellion, gambling, greed, intimidation, jealousy, perfectionism, judgmentalness, lust, legalism, manipulation, resentment, rudeness, sexual idolatry, sexual immorality, sexual impurity, sexual perversion, selfishness, self-centeredness, self-righteousness, self-pity, slander, worry, vanity, worldliness, witchcraft, addictions, dependencies, complaining, gossiping and all other forms of unrighteousness.

Lord Jesus, I ask you to forgive me for all my sins, trespasses and transgressions and to cover all my offenses with your most precious blood. Surround me with your light and penetrate the very depths of my being with your love. Let no area of darkness remain in me, but transform my whole being with the healing light of your infinite love.

Healing Prayer of Command
Precious Lord Jesus, you came into the world to heal our infirmities and endure our sufferings. You went about healing all who were sick and bringing comfort to those in pain. By a simple command you rebuked Peter’s mother-in-law’s fever. You spoke directly to the illness, condemned it for its actions and commanded it to leave her body.

In the same way, Lord, you have called all of your disciples to follow your example. You have given us power over all the works of the enemy and sent us forth to make disciples of all nations. In the healing tradition of the church, and through my obedience to your written Word, I hereby take authority over all forms of sickness and disease that have been attacking my body.

In the name of Jesus, under the power and authority of the Lord God Almighty, I command all forms of demonic illness to leave my body now and go straight to the feet of Jesus Christ. Your assignment and influences are over. I rebuke all pain in the name of Jesus, and I command it to get out of my body right now. I rebuke all spirits of infirmity, nerve disorder, lung disorder, brain disorder, heart disease, AIDS, cancer, hypochondria, fatigue, anorexia, leukemia, arthritis, tumors, abnormal growths, diabetes and all other forms of sickness to leave my body now in the name of Jesus.

Lord Jesus, I thank you for your healing power. I ask you to send forth your ministering, medical and surgical angels, to repair and restore any damage that was caused in my body by the presence of sin, sickness or demonically influenced infirmities. I ask that you send forth your Holy Spirit and fill me with your love, light, peace and joy. Come Holy Spirit and transform me into the child of God that you intended me to be.

Prayer to the Divine Physician
Dear Lord Jesus, you went about healing all those who were sick and tormented by unclean spirits. You cleansed the lepers, opened the eyes of the blind and by speaking a simple command, you empowered the crippled to rise up and walk. You sent forth your life-giving power to all those in need, including those you raised from the dead.

O Divine Physician, I come to you now in great need of your intervention. I surrender my life and health into your loving hands. I ask you to send forth your healing power into my heart, mind, body, soul and spirit. Remove from me every lie of the enemy and destroy all the word curses that have been spoken against my health.

If I have accepted medical beliefs that I should not have, I ask for your forgiveness and denounce those beliefs right now. I break every agreement that I have made with my sickness and disease. I denounce every symptom of my illness, and I ask to be set free by the power of your truth.

Please send forth your Holy Spirit to renew my mind and cleanse my thoughts. I refuse to bow down and serve the symptoms of my illness any longer. Please draw my attention away from myself, and help me focus on your enduring love.

O Divine Physician, you are the source and strength of my recovery. Show me how to proceed with your plan for my restoration. I surrender my healthcare into your loving hands. Please help me to discern every aspect of my treatment, medications and recovery process, so that my every thought and action conforms to your good and perfect will for my life. Amen.

Prayer for a Creative Miracle
God of all creation, you who spoke a simple command and brought forth light from the darkness, I call upon you now to send forth your miracle-working power into every aspect of my being. In the same way that you spoke unto the dust of the ground when you created humankind in your own image, I ask you to send forth your healing power into my body. Send forth your word and command every cell, electrical and chemical impulse, tissue, joint, ligament, organ, gland, muscle, bone and every molecule in my body to come under complete and perfect health, strength, alignment, balance and harmony.

It is through you that I live and move and have my being. With every breath I take, I live under your life-giving grace. I ask you to touch me now with the same miracle-working power that you used when you fashioned me inside my mother’s womb. As surely as you have created me in your image and likeness, you can also recreate me now and restore me to health.

Please fill me with your healing power. Cast out all that should not be inside of me. I ask you to mend all that is broken, root out every sickness and disease, open all blocked arteries and veins, restore my internal organs, rebuild my damaged tissues, remove all inflammation and cleanse me of all infections, viruses and destructive forms of bacteria.

Let the warmth of your healing love flood my entire being, so that my body will function the way it was created to be, whole and complete, renewed in your perfect health. I ask this through my Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Generational Healing Prayer
O Father of mercies and God of all healing, I come before you as your child, in great need of your help. Many of my problems and physical health needs have been caused by my own failures, neglect and sinfulness. Others have been passed down through my family lineage in the form of genetic defects from my ancestors.

I humbly beseech thee Lord Jesus to go back into my past and forgive my parents’ and grandparents’ sins, especially for those sins that have exposed me to genetic and physical defects. I ask you to place your cross between me and my parents and grandparents and cleanse my entire family lineage all the way back to the beginning of time.

Precious Lord Jesus, please look upon my physical and emotional health needs with your great love and mercy. I ask that you send forth your medical angels to minister to every area of my genetic composition. Please heal every infirmity and abnormality in my brain chemistry and all my thought processes where disturbances are present. Heal all the damage caused by my mother’s stress, neglect or abuse when I was being formed in her womb. Please remove all defective and mutated genes and restore my genetic composition back to its original and proper condition.

If my parents’ or grandparents’ sins have exposed me to any form of demonic illness or generationally inherited curses, by the power of the Lord, God Almighty, I take the sword of the Spirit and cut myself free. I command all evil spirits of infirmity, sickness and disease to leave my body now and to be consigned into the everlasting lake of fire. Your assignment and influences are over.

I call forth the heavenly host, the holy angels of God, to surround, protect and cleanse all areas vacated by the forces of evil with God’s holy light. I ask the Holy Spirit to permeate my heart, mind, body, soul and spirit, filling me to overflowing with the life and love of my Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayer for Inner Healing
Almighty and everlasting Lord, I come before you now in great need of your mercy. You are the doctor and physician of my soul. I humbly beseech thee to send forth your healing power into every area of my inner-woundedness. I surrender to you all areas of unforgiveness, especially those hurtful past events where anger and bitterness have been allowed to fester, causing harm to my physical health.

I ask for your grace to forgive every person in my past who has ever hurt me. I forgive my father and mother and ask to be set free from all forms of mental, emotional and psychological ailments. I forgive my brothers and sisters for their sibling rivalry, selfishness and divisiveness that have caused strife within our family. I forgive my friends, coworkers and neighbors for all their harmful actions and the unkind words they have spoken against me.

I forgive my spouse, children and all my extended family members, and I ask for your loving grace to heal all the circumstances where I failed to receive the love, affection, support and respect that I needed. I forgive all those who have violated my sexual purity, and I ask to be set free and washed clean by the power of your purifying love. I forgive myself for my past mistakes and failures, and I ask to be set free from all destructive consequences, guilt, shame and self-condemnation.

I forgive all those in positions of authority, especially those doctors, nurses, healthcare providers, insurance adjustors, paramedics, police officers, government officials, former employers and members of the clergy who have treated me unjustly. I forgive my greatest enemies and those who I have vowed that I would never forgive. I break those vows right now by the power of your name Lord Jesus.

By an act of my free will, I choose to forgive everybody, including the person who hurt me the most. I release my desire to receive an apology, my need to be justified in my actions and my need for others to acknowledge the injustice. I surrender the entire debt of all injuries into your merciful hands, Lord Jesus. I denounce all forms of anger, bitterness and resentment, and I command every evil spirit that has entered my body through the lack of forgiveness to leave now and go straight to the feet of my Lord, Jesus Christ.

Through the power of your Holy Spirit, I ask you Lord Jesus to fill me with your love, peace, patience, kindness, generosity and self-control. May your healing hand rest upon me now as I bless all those who have hurt me. I desire to be kind and compassionate to everyone, forgiving them just as you have forgiven me. I ask for the healing power of your love to flow through every cell of my body and into the lives of those whom I have forgiven. Amen.

Prayer of Confirmation
Lord, God Almighty, I thank you for protecting me from every form of evil and bringing me the gift of your divine health. I thank you for breaking the chains of oppression and delivering me from every form of sin, sickness, disease and lie of the enemy. I thank you for the powerful name of Jesus to which every knee shall bow.

In the power and authority that you have given me, I say to all addictions, perversions, chemical dependencies, hopelessness, worry, doubt, fear, despair and all symptoms of any such illness that you must bend your knees now to the name of Jesus. I cast down every argument and proud obstacle that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. I bring every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.

Thank you for giving me your authority over all the power of the enemy. Nothing shall harm me. I call upon a heavenly spirit of praise and worship to fill and guard me against the enemy’s lies. Thank you for your full armor, your name, your most precious blood and your Holy Spirit. No weapon formed against me shall prosper. Thank you heavenly Father for all your provisions, for yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory, both now and forevermore. Amen.

Prayer for Peaceful Rest
Dear Lord Jesus, as I rest in the comfort of your love, I ask to experience your gentle embrace as you tenderly wrap your loving arms around me. I trust your compassionate care will bring peace to my mind, serenity to my heart and renewal to my spirit.

In your loving embrace, I ask that you grant me a peaceful night’s rest. Please purify my dreams, cleanse my subconscious and wash my thoughts with the purity of your infinite love. Please minister to my heart, mind, body, soul and spirit as I rest in your compassionate care tonight.

Please send forth your protective angels to stand guard over me as I sleep. May your angelic army destroy all curses, hindrances and demonic influences that have been sent against my ability to experience a peaceful night’s rest. I ask that your heavenly host protect me as I stay awake and watch over me as I sleep, that awake I may keep watch with Christ, and asleep, rest in his peace. Amen.

Healing Scriptures
The following scripture passages have the power to bring healing and strength to your heart, mind, body, soul and spirit. Meditate on them day and night. Allow God to speak to your situation through his written Word. Accept the Word of God as if the Lord himself were speaking directly to you. Take what is being said deep into your heart.

Allow your faith to grow to the point where you can command the mountain of sickness, hardship and despair out of your life. For according to Mark 11:23–24, Jesus says, “Truly I tell you, if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and if you do not doubt in your heart, but believe that what you say will come to pass, it will be done for you. So I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

Emotional Healing Exercise2
1. Spend some time in prayer and ask the Lord to show you if there are any unresolved emotional wounds that are causing problems with your health. If the Lord brings to mind some people who have hurt you, ask the Holy Spirit to bring back the fullness of your repressed emotions, so that you can be set free.

2. After you identify a hurtful past event that needs healing, try to separate the situation from everything else that has happened to you. Instead of trying to work through years of emotional abuse at one time, try to isolate one experience and keep working on the situation until it is resolved.

3. Begin the exercise from a prayerful and meditative state of mind. Find a quiet place where you can be alone with the Lord. Make sure you have plenty of tissues and the necessary writing supplies.

4. Picture the person who hurt you in your imagination. Imagine that person can hear everything you are about to say. If the person is deceased, picture them in heaven standing next to Jesus.

5. Begin writing your letter with the words, I’m angry because you hurt me! Tell this person all the ways that he or she has hurt you by his or her careless and disrespectful actions. Keep writing the words I’m angry, over and over again. Vent all your anger on paper. Don’t worry about spelling or grammar; just release everything that needs to be said.

6. After you vent all your anger, move on to any fears that you may have experienced. How has this person affected your life? Describe how the consequences of his or her careless actions have carried forward into your present-day relationships.

7. After you vent any fears or guilty feelings, get in touch with your sadness. Tell this person what you wanted to happen that didn’t. If you’re writing to your father say, I’m sad because I wanted a better relationship with you. I wanted you to treat me like a beloved son or daughter. I wanted your love and support.

8. Conclude your letter with anything else you need to say to this person, and then begin a new letter by picturing the person who hurt you in a completely healed state. Picture them in heaven standing next to Jesus. Imagine this person full of God’s love, and because they are full of God’s love, allow them to offer you an apology.

9. Start your apology letter by saying, I’m sorry for hurting you. You didn’t deserve to be treated like that. I’m so sorry. Please forgive me. Write down all the loving words that you need to hear.

10. Conclude your apology letter with prayer. Release the person who hurt you into the Lord’s hands. Ask Jesus to wash away any negativity that you may have picked up by accepting this person’s abuse. Surrender this person to the Lord, and if appropriate, ask Jesus to break all unhealthy soul-ties.

11. Allow Jesus to speak to you through a closure letter. Accept the Lord’s love and forgiveness. Allow the Lord’s love and forgiveness to flow into your heart and cleanse you of all curses, resentment and negativity.

12. Ask the Lord to show you if there’s anything else that you need to release. Allow yourself to fall into the Lord’s arms and be permanently set free—free to be the child of God the Lord intended you to be.

Act of Oblation to the Sacred Heart

My loving GOD , out of the grateful love I bear You, and to make reparation for our unfaithfulness to grace, we give You our hearts, and we consecrate ourselves wholly to You; and with Your help we purpose never to sin again. In Jesus name . Amen.

Act of Contrition

Merciful Father, I am guilty of sin. I confess my sins before you and I am sorry for them. Your promises are just; therefore I trust that you will forgive me my sins and cleanse me from every stain of sin. Jesus himself is the proposition for my sins and those of the whole world. I put my hope in his atonement. May my sins be forgiven through his name, and in his blood may my soul be made clean. Amen.

Act of Contrition

O Lord GOD , lover of our souls, who, for the great love with which You loved us, willed not the death of a sinner, but rather that he should be converted and live, we grieve from the bottom of my heart that we offended You, my most loving Father and Redeemer, to whom all sin is infinitely displeasing, who so loved that You she Your blood for me, and endured the bitter torments of a most cruel death. O my God, my inifinite Goodness, would that I never offended You. Pardon us, O Lord GOD , as we most humbly implore Your mercy. Have pity on a sinner for whom Jesus blood pleads before Your face , Father.

O merciful and forgiving Lord GOD, for the love of Your, we forgive all who have ever offended all the animals and us . We firmly resolve to forsake and flee from all sins, and to avoid the occasions of them, to confess, in bitterness of spirit, all those sins which we committed against Your divine goodness, and to Love You, O our God, for Your own sake, above all things and for ever. Grant us grace so to do, most gracious Lord. In Jesus's name.

Act of Contrition

O my God, I am sorry for my sins because I have offended you. I know I should love you above all things. Help me to do penance, to do better, and to avoid anything that might lead me to sin. Amen.

Act of Contrition

My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy.

by the Passion of Your Blessed Son

O God, by the passion of your blessed Son you made an instrument of shameful death to be for us the means of life: Grant us so to glory in the cross of Christ, that we may gladly suffer shame and loss for the sake of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

prayer of thanks to GOD

Thank You for the world so sweet. Thank You for the things we drink & eat. Thank You for our sweet & tender & faithful animal companions. Thank You for the birds that sing. Thank You, God, for everything. In YESHUA's name. Amen.

Spirit of Light and Love

Spirit of light and love, Creator and Sustainer, God of many names, Sometimes the burdens I shoulder feel like more than I can bear. I am terrified I shall break under their pressure, My wallet flattened, My hopes broken, My dreams in dust, My mind staggering, Under the crushing weight of uncertainty. As I struggle with my fears, And work to hold my creditors at bay, As I fight to regain a financial foothold And hope against hope To reverse my fall, Uplift my heart, oh God. Rekindle my faith. Make me mindful of thy many gifts, Lest, overwhelmed by the threats to my well-being, I forget them, And I forget you. This is my prayer: to pray for what I have, To pray for health, if I am graced with health; To pray for love, if blessed with loved ones, Who offer me the priceless gift of love's embrace. Remind me to pray, if I am blessed to be a parent, for the treasure of children; To pray for the wealth of friends, who stand beside me through my bleakest days, And share my pain. In this veil of tears and trouble, Raise my sights to look out upon the many beacons, Shining their light upon my life. Remind me to give thanks for those, Who reach out to take my hand, Who walk with me and stand by me, Who raise my spirits by their presence, Whose smile brightens my view, And lifts my heart, And gives me joy. For if I pray for the wonders that are mine To savor this very day, These, the most precious, of my prayers will come true. I shall again unwrap the present, Give thanks for thy many gifts. My lifeline will be strengthened, My perspective widened, And for one brief, shining moment, The shadows will lift from my heart. So it is I offer up my thanks. So it is I utter forth, oh God, From the depth of my soul, This grateful prayer of gratitude and praise.

to have generous hearts

Father, I pray for (name one or more) all of your sheep and everyone in my acqantances, companies & circle of loved sheep to be generous people. May their generosity begin with You as they give You their tithes and offerings, believing Your promise that as they do, You will throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that they'll not have room enough for it. (Malachi 3:8–10) Help them grow in the grace of giving, giving to others as much as they are able, willing to give even beyond their ability because they trust in You and have given themselves to You according to Your will. May they be generous, always willing to hear the cry of the poor and willing to share. (2 Corinthians 8:7b; Romans 12:6, 8b; 2 Corinthians 8:2–5; Proverbs 21:13; 22:9; 1 Timothy 6:18) May they sow generously and reap generously—pressed down, shaken together, and running over! Help them be cheerful givers to those in Christian service, and then supply all their needs from Your riches in Christ Jesus. (2 Corinthians 9:6; Luke 6:38; Philippians 4:15–19) Help them to give beyond their means. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Bless Our Relationship

Dear God, You have defined my desire: to be of immeasurable value to all Your sheep. Guide me in the ways that lead to this richness in relationship, and be glorified in my every effort. I want to honor all the beings I love--and you--through my behavior. How can I do that today? Please show me and empower me. In the name of YESHUA. Amen.

prayers for those who suffer insomnia

Lord,
Give our bodies restful sleep
and let the work we have done today
bear fruit in eternal life.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Lord, fill this night with your radiance.
May we sleep in peace and rise with joy
to welcome the light of a new day in your name.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Lord Jesus Christ,
you have given your followers
an example of gentleness and humility,
a task that is easy and a burden that is light.
Accept the prayers an work of this day,
and give us the rest that will strengthen us
to render more faithful service to you
who live and reign forever and ever.

Lord God,
send restful sleep
to refresh our tired bodies.
May your help always renew us
and keep us strong in your service.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

(for Saturday)

Lord,
be with us throughout this night.
When day comes may we rise from sleep
to rejoice in the Resurrection of your Christ
Who lives and reigns forever and ever.

The conclusion of every night's prayer is also a prayer for sleep:

May the all powerful Lord grant us a restful night and a peaceful death. Amen.

Prayer for the Troops in Iraq

Dear Lord, please hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them, Father, as they protect us. When they are tired, give them strength and rest. If they are wounded, Father, give them comfort. When they are lonely, may they feel you near them. Grant them strength, courage, and wisdom for their tasks. And, Lord, uplift and strengthen the families and loved ones who wait for their return. Please, Father, bring a quick end to all this conflict. I pray in the name of Jesus, our Saviour. Amen.

Angel Blessing at Bedtime

Angels bless and angels keep. Angels guard me while I sleep. Bless my heart and bless my home. Bless my spirit as I roam . Guide and guard me through the night and wake me with the morning's light. In the name of YAHUSHUA. Amen .

prayer of generosity
Gracious God, give us generous hearts:

to share whatever gift it is that you have given to us;
to acknowledge you as the giver of all good gifts;
to give without counting the cost;
to share without expecting something in return;
to be wise in the way of caring for ourselves and others;
to hold all of our treasures and values with open hands;
to have gospel priorities and to align our life, love and time in their light;
to be gracious and unbegrudging in our giving;
to recognize the abundance of blessings in each passing day;
to know the freedom that comes with true generosity;
to accept our talents, whether many or few, and to use them in service of others;
to grow in giving thanks for everything;
to be happy with having what we need and wise enough to know what it is that we want and do not need;
to fall more deeply in love with the God of all generosity so that our hearts are strong enough to give away freely whatever is asked.

O gracious God, who generously lavishes our lives with goodness,
create in our hearts a deep center of gratitude,
a center that grows so strong in its thanksgiving
that sharing freely of our treasures becomes the pattern of our existence.
Remind us often of how much you cherish us,
of how abundantly you have offered gifts to us,
especially in the hours of our greatest need.
May we always be grateful for your reaching into our lives
with surprises of joy, growth and unconditional love.

Amen.

A Prayer to be Generous
Teach me, Lord Jesus, to be generous:
to serve You as You deserve;
to give, not counting the cost;
to fight, not heeding the wounds;
to toil, not asking for rest;
to labor, not seeking any reward,
save that of knowing that we do Your will.
Amen.

Prayer for beings with Breast Cancer

Father, for the strength You have given all Your sheep I thank You. For the health You have blessed me with, I thank You. For the sheep who are going through breast cancer and the beings they love I ask You to strengthen and to heal as you see fit. Lord we know you want us to be in good health and to prosper. Lord use us to do the work You have for us to do. For we know time is getting short on this earth. Lord be with every woman who is sick and encourage them as only you can. I know how faithful you are. You have shown yourself to be everything you say you are in your Holy Word. I praise you for you made this body and you can heal this body. In Jesus Name I pray. Amen.

Wonderful promises

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. God can instill the promise of this encouraging Bible verse into your heart. Psalm 16:11 You will make known to me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever. The Lord will show you what to do and instruct you how to live. Your responsibility is to stay focused on His will. Genesis 17:1  When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless. Seek God's direction. Living a godly life does not come easily or naturally to any of us. Neither does trusting and submitting to the Father's will. Yet he will teach us how to follow Him and live a life that is pleasing to Him. Ephesians 2:8-9   For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Jeremiah 29:11  For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. God will also show us that we can always have faith in His faultless character. You can find the answers to any life questions in encouraging Bible verses. You pick the topic. It could be desiring a life filled with abundance and prosperity, for example. Jeremiah 20:13   Sing to the Lord; praise the Lord! For he has delivered the life of the needy from the hand of evildoers. Observe God's help and provision. Many times the Lord will be specific about what He desires for you to do or what He will accomplish in your life. This is because the more challenging the path before you, the more He will have to help you. John 1:1-51   In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. God wants you to have faith and depend upon Him. So look for the small ways He answers your prayers, the doors He opens and the ways He meets your needs step by step. Praise His intimate involvement in every detail of your daily living. John 8:32   And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Don't dwell on your problems. Focus on His promises. Knowing that God will never forsake you will help you face every obstacle with hope and perseverance. Psalm 1:1-3    Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. Without doubt God is absolutely faithful in keeping His promises. So as you are confronted by difficult situations in the coming year, commit yourself to seeking Him, observing His commands, watching for His help, maintaining your focus on Him, recalling His faithfulness, and embracing His word found in bible verses. 1 Corinthians 6:18   Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Your divine Father wants the very best for you, and He will never lead you astray. So focus on His will, and you will experience living at its very fullest. 1 Peter 3:18   For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit. 1 Timothy 6:18-19    They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life. Isaiah 58:11   And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail. Listen to God. Giving attention to how the Lord is directing you is essential to walking with Him and remaining in the center of His will. If you never discover how to hear His voice, you will never be able to trust Him fully or grow as a result of what He is doing in your life. Get in the habit of reading encouraging and uplifting bible verses of the day and applying daily devotions.

Entering Into the Gate of Heaven John Donne Bring us, O Lord God, at our last awakening, into the house and gate of heaven, to enter into that gate, and dwell in that house where there shall be no darkness nor dazzling, but one equal light; no noise nor silence, but one equal music; no fears nor hopes, but one equal possession; no ends nor beginnings, but one equal eternity; in the habitation of thy glory and dominion, world without end. Amen.

Save the Afflicted

Clement of Rome

We beseech thee, Master, to be our helper and protector.
Save the afflicted among us; have mercy on the lowly;
raise up the fallen; appear to the needy; heal the ungodly;
restore the wanderers of thy people;
feed the hungry; ransom our prisoners;
raise up the sick; comfort the faint-hearted.

daily prayers can change your life. You can develop
a fuller relationship with God and live a better life through prayer. You have a better chance at finding fulfillment , to say nothing of salvation!, from daily prayers than from the many distractions bombarding us these days! many times our souls feel as empty as our wallets afterwards. Developing a good prayer life can really change you for the better. Praying can become a most satisfying routine in many ways. It might not be an easy habit to start at first, but it’s definitely one you won’t want to break! daily prayers give you a sense of peace and purpose.Prayer has often been called the raising up of the mind and heart to God. We engage in a literally divine conversation with Him. You get a wonderful opportunity from prayer to strengthen and deepen your relationship with our Creator and with your fellow human beings by praying for their needs as well as your own.

what we pray

There are many great christian daily prayers. Here are some suggestions in case you’re wondering, or need a quick reminder, as to which are good to say regularly: The Lord's Prayer (also known as the Our Father), the Glory Be are excellent. the Apostles' Creed, in a wonderfully meditative way. good prayers : an Act of Spiritual Communion; prayers known as the Acts of Faith, Hope, Love, and Contrition; the Angelus: the Anima Christi; evening prayers; mealtime prayers; the Memorare; novenas; morning prayers; prayers to the Holy Spirit; a Three O'Clock Prayer; prayers of reparation such as the Golden Arrow, and other wonderful chaplets and litanties, to Our Lord YASHUA. there are beautiful ones said by the priest in the Mass. In case you feel overwhelmed by all this, don't worry! Pray what you can when you can. Feel free to talk to our Lord in your own spontaneous prayers and other thoughts (good or bad!), about what’s going on in your day. remember to keep God front and center in your life.

how we pray

The two main types of prayer are vocal and mental. In vocal prayer we use prayers, such as the ones mentioned above, from books. Or perhaps those we’ve written down ourselves. In mental prayer we reflect on God’s word. Mental prayer can include meditation on various prayers and readings. In prayer we do not do all the talking. we must also listen. God talks to us, more in meditation than in vocal prayer.” The two forms can also be combined and often are. Vocal prayer can help with mental prayer. Reading can definitely help your mental prayer life ;Try to read scripture or other devout material whenever possible, even if it’s just for 15 minutes or so, every day of the week.

good reading list :
• The Bible (especially the Gospels and St. Paul’s letters in the New Testament, and the Psalms in the Old Testament).
Be careful not to make all your daily prayers requests for favors. Don’t let them sound more like “Gimmie, Gimmie, Gimmie” than “Holy, Holy, Holy.” God wants us to ask for what we need, in accordance with His will. Still, we need to love Him as we love each other, just for Himself, and not think of Him as J.C. Penney. We should pray with confidence, humility, sincerity (from your heart), attentiveness and perseverance. Note the humility and confidence are not mutually exclusive here. We approach our Creator knowing we don’t always have all the answers as to what’s best for us. He does! With faith we have confidence that He will provide for our needs, thinking always of what’s best for our souls. As we say in the Lord’s Prayer “Thy will be done!” On being attentive, if your mind wanders, let God know in your own words that you’re sorry if you can’t concentrate but you’d like to pray anyway. If you find your prayers are on “auto-pilot,” slow down and try to focus on the words of each prayer and what they mean to you.

why we pray

Archbishop Sheen also once answered the question of why we pray “because we are orchestras and we always need a tune-up.” He understood the importance of prayer in recharging our spiritual batteries, as it were. Catholic daily prayers give us vital spiritual strength.

As the Rev. Raoul Plus once put it, we pray to God “to adore Him, to thank Him, to implore His pardon, and to ask for His benefits.”

Here’s a good way to remember why we pray to God: The Christian who lives well ACTS well. We pray:
• In Adoration of Him.
• With Contrition (sorrow) for our sins.
• In Thanksgiving for His blessings (especially the little things we take for granted).
• In Supplication (in other words, in “petition,” in our requests for ourselves and others).

(These have also been listed in the Catechism of the Catholic Church as adoration, petition, intercession, thanksgiving and praise.)

WHERE WE PRAY

You can pray in church (someplace quiet is best!) or anywhere else that seems appropriate, either alone or, whenever possible, with others. (You might have heard the saying “The family that prays together stays together.”)

As Catholics, our most important form of “group prayer” is the Mass, mentioned earlier. The Rosary is often said in groups as well. You might want to join a prayer group in your parish for the fellowship and the opportunity of sharing a truly divine experience. (Remember that these are our Catholic daily prayers!)

THE LORD'S PRAYER
(THE OUR FATHER)

Painting of the Sermon on the Mount by Carl Heinrich Bloch courtesy of Wikipedia

The Lord's Prayer, also known as the Our Father, was composed by our Lord Jesus Christ Himself. This magnificent prayer beautifully reflects the wishes of its Divine Author. Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount (pictured above) where it first appears in the Gospels (Matt 6:9-13): “When praying do not choose many words” (Matthew 6:7).

In other words, quantity doesn’t necessarily mean quality in your prayer life, especially if you’re not being sincere! We can marvel that the Lord's Prayer sums up what we need from God (and what He wants from us!) so succinctly:

Our Father,
who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.

The Lord's Prayer has had many great admirers throughout the ages! St. John Chrysostom (347-407 AD), one of the preeminent theologians known as Doctors of the Church, once wrote of it, “What prayer could be more true before God the Father than that which his Son, Who is Truth, uttered with His Own lips?”

St. Augustine, the famous Bishop of Hippo best known perhaps for his Confessions, wrote in 412 AD “If we pray rightly, and as becomes our wants, we say nothing but what is already contained in the Lord's Prayer.”

Some eight centuries later, one of the Church’s greatest Doctors, St. Thomas Aquinas, noted in his famous work, the Summa Theologica, that “in the Lord's Prayer not only do we ask for all that we may rightly desire, but also in the order wherein we ought to desire them, so that this prayer not only teaches us to ask, but also directs all our affections.”

Finally, in the 19th century, St. Therese of Lisieux, the nun best known as the “Little Flower of Jesus,” marveled in her autobiography that “Sometimes when I am in such a state of spiritual dryness that not a single good thought occurs to me, I say very slowly the ‘Our Father,’ or the ‘Hail Mary,’ and these prayers suffice to take me out of myself, and wonderfully refresh me.”

(She mentions here an excellent way to say the Lord's Prayer, slowly, to get the most out of it, rather than rattling it off on auto-pilot, as we all do sometimes!)

The Lord's Prayer has 7 petitions. The first 3 (lines 1-5 above) concern God’s desires from us. The last 4 (lines 6-10) concern our desires from God. Note the wonderfully communal nature of these requests from the outset:

God the Father is Our Father as well: As St. Paul wrote in his letter to the Romans “You have received the spirit of adoption of sons, whereby we cry: Abba (Father)” (Romans 8:15).

We are to honor God’s name and live our lives so that His kingdom in Heaven may be one with ours on earth in love and obedience. Can you imagine what kind of world we would have if we all naturally obeyed His commandments? A world without the hatreds and the terrible wars they bring, for starters. It would be Heaven on Earth, in many ways!

Courtesy of Chant Art Thus, when we pray “Thy Will Be Done” we pray that we may be better “citizens-in-training” for Heaven, and to remember that God’s will for us is what counts. Our Lord used those very words, “Thy Will Be Done,” in His prayers to God the Father the night before his Passion. This is truly the Lord's Prayer in more ways than one!

On the petitions that follow (lines 6-10 above) note that “our daily bread” has a wonderful double meaning: bread as food for our bodies and as the Body of Christ in the Eucharist as food for our souls. In lines 7-8, “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us,” the Lord's Prayer sums up succinctly one of Jesus’s crucial points in the Gospels: “If you will forgive men their offenses, your heavenly Father will forgive you also your offenses. But if you will not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive you” (Matthew 6:14-15).

(Our Lord further stresses the necessity of forgiveness when Peter asks Him later on in Matthew’s Gospel (18:21-22) if he should forgive someone “up to seven times” and Jesus replies “seventy times seven!”)

Many times in our lives forgiving someone seems to be the hardest thing we can do. How often have you had problems with family members, bosses and co-workers (especially those!) that never get straightened out? How often have you found it difficult to get past your own anger and resentment over grievances? (And what about those times when people have a grudge against you? That can make life loads of fun!)

Whether others hit you with a pillow or a ton of bricks, Jesus has the same message: “Get over it.” We are called to imitate Christ in this manner, as in others, so as to live so that others may see Him working in us!

We live in an unforgiving world full of people who would rather bear grudges than crosses. Nonetheless, remember that Our Lord cried out to His Father from His cross during His Crucifixion “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). Talk about forgiveness! Note how this leads into the final two petitions (lines 9-10) “and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.” Satan (also referred to in scripture as the devil) and his forces of evil don’t want you to forgive and forget, but rather to keep picking at the scabs of whatever wounds others have given you. When you do that, can they ever heal?

Life is more manageable when we can “Let Go and Let God,” as a popular phrase puts it. If nothing else, we can, and should, at least pray for those who have wronged us or whom we have wronged, when we can't otherwise make amends.

There might be some confusion on line 9 when we ask God to “lead us not into temptation.” Would God ever want to do that? Of course not! In the Lord's Prayer we ask for His help in resisting temptation and not letting it overcome us.

He lets us experience temptation so that we may strengthen our “spiritual muscles” by learning to resist it and asking for His help in doing so. An unforgiving heart is a good example of a major temptation. Jesus can help us to forgive others (as He can help carry all of our crosses) if we let Him.

In the final line Jesus echoes His own petition to His Heavenly Father in John’s Gospel: “I am not praying that you would take them out of the world, but that you would preserve them from evil.” (John 17:15). Evil in the case refers both to the Evil One, Satan, and to the evils he brings about in this world. With the help of the Lord's Prayer we can better resist evil and prepare for Eternal Life with God in the world to come, in Heaven.

Prayers for Peace

from various faith traditions

If there is to be peace in the world
There must be peace in the nations.
If there is to be peace in the nations
There must be peace in the cities.
If there is to be peace in the cities
There must be peace between neighbours.
If there is to be peace between neighbours
There must be peace in the home.
If there is to be peace in the home
There must be peace in the heart.
Lao-Tse 6th Century Chinese philosopher
May all beings be filled with joy and peace.
May all beings everywhere,
The strong and the weak,
The great and the small,
The mean and the powerful,
The short and the long,
the subtle and the gross:
May all beings everywhere,
Seen and unseen,
Dwelling far off or nearby,
Being or waiting to become:
May all be filled with lasting joy.
Let no one deceive another,
Let no one anywhere despise another,
Let no one out of anger or resentment
Wish suffering on anyone at all.
Just as a mother with her own life
Protects her child, her only child, from harm,
So within yourself let grow
A boundless love for all creatures.
Let your love flow outward through the universe,
To its height, its depth, its broad extent,
A limitless love, without hatred or enmity.
Then as you stand or walk,
Sit or lie down,
As long as you are awake,
Strive for this with a one-pointed mind;
Your life will bring heaven to earth.
Sutta Nipata
Almighty God and Creator,
You are the Father of all people on the earth.
Guide, I pray all the nations and their leaders
in the ways of justice and peace.
Protect us from the evils of injustice,
prejudice, exploitation, conflict and war.
Help us to put away mistrust, bitterness and hatred.
Teach us to cease the storing and using of implements of war.
Lead us to find justice, peace and freedom.
Unite us in the making and creating of the tools of peace
against ignorance, poverty, disease and oppression.
Grant that we may grow in harmony and friendship as brothers and sisters created in Your image, to Your honor and praise.
Amen.
From an Orthodox Christian prayerbook
O Lord, grant us to love Thee;
grant that we may love those that love Thee;
grant that we may do the deeds that win Thy love.
Make the love of Thee be dearer to us than ourselves,
than our families, than wealth, and even than cool water.
Mohammed 570-632
Peace for Those Intoxicated with War
God of peace;
God of shalom;
God of salaam:
Save us from intoxication with war.
Turn down the media's frenzy and
unquestioning assumption that war will come.
Pull all peoples back from unstable international policy.
Deliver the nations from going out of control as the solution to conflict.
Bring us to sobriety of spirit.
Turn our hearts to peacemaking.
Give wisdom and light to our leaders, that they may choose the way to peace. Amen.
Buddhist Prayer for Peace
May all beings everywhere plagued
with sufferings of body and mind
quickly be freed from their illnesses.
May those frightened cease to be afraid,
and may those bound be free.
May the powerless find power,
and may people think of befriending
one another.
May those who find themselves in trackless,
fearful wilderness--
the children, the aged, the unprotected--
be guarded by beneficent celestials
Zoroastrian Prayer for Peace
We pray to God to eradicate all the misery in the world:
that understanding triumph over ignorance,
that generosity triumph over indifference,
that trust triumph over contempt, and
that truth triumph over falsehood.
Muslim Prayer for Peace
Praise be to the Lord of the
Universe who has created us and
made us into tribes and nations,
That we may know each other, not that
we may despise each other.
If the enemy incline towards peace, do
thou also incline towards peace, and
trust God, for the Lord is the one that
heareth and knoweth all things.
And the servants of God,
Most Gracious are those who walk on
the Earth in humility, and when we
address them, we say "PEACE."
Lord, make me an instrument of Your Peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light; and
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226)
Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable. - John F. Kennedy

BUT IN WHOSE NAME?
by Brian Burch
(previously published in third space, Recluse and Catholic New Times)

My memory of war is all second hand
---I was not at Mai Lai. I was not running down the road
with napalm etching into my flesh.

I did not watch my feet rot in trenches
or wake up with my neighbour's blood dying my shirt
or believed, somehow, that my battles lead to freedom and to peace.

I was not on a bridge in Belgrade or
at an airport in Grenada or
in a schoolroom in Baghdad or
in a factory in Dresden or
at a church in Nagasaki or
in a hospital in Stalingrad or
in an office in New York.

Nor is my memory of serving peace first hand.
I have not sat in the Gulf Peace Camp or
prayed in Chiapas or planted trees outside Hebron or
disrupted the School of the Americas or
handed out leaflets in Burma or
sat with the families in East Timor or
fasted with the wives outside Gestapo headquarters .

But I have held the children of war.
I have talked with the veterans of war.
I have added my prayers to the voices for peace.

It has to start somewhere.
In the here and now war is being waged
and in the here and now the seeds of peace are being looked for.

The war is waged in someone else's name. Not in mine.
The work for peace is in the hands of us all, including mine.

My anguish, my anguish! I writhe in pain! Oh, the walls of my heart! My heart is beating wildly; I cannot keep silent; for I hear the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war. Disaster overtakes disaster, the whole land is laid waste. Suddenly my tents are destroyed, my curtains in a moment. How long must I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet? "For my people are foolish, they do not know me; they are stupid children, they have no understanding. They are skilled in doing evil, but do not know how to do good." I looked on the earth, and lo, it was waste and void; and to the heavens, and they had no light. I looked on the mountains, and lo, they were quaking, and all the hills moved to and fro. I looked, and lo, there was no one at all, and all the birds of the air had fled. I looked, and lo, the fruitful land was a desert, and all its cities were laid in ruins before the LORD... (Jeremiah 4:19-26)

A king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength. The war horse is a vain hope for victory, and by its great might it cannot save. Truly the eye of the LORD is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love, to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. Our soul waits for the LORD; he is our help and shield. Our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us, even as we hope in you.
from the Hebrew Scriptures : Psalm 33:16-22

War Poem
by William Ashworth

i
What if we could and didn't. What if
all those children's eyes
in countries that we cannot name cried out to us
and we didn't. The children's eyes
are black, the color of mourning,
of fired wood, or of
the sky between the stars
where dawn gathers
but is not yet seen.

This year smells of bombs. What if we could
and didn't. What if we just didn't. The eyes,
empty as shells, are watching,
watching,
where tears gather
but have not yet begun to fall.

ii

Love one another said the man
in the space between two thieves
but the Christians
were too busy for that.
There were far too many souls to be saved, and anyway,
who came to town following him?
Twelve ragged hippies, and one of those
was a snitch for the FBI.
We deloused the pew cushions after they left.

More blood, Father: the first time
clearly was inadequate.

iii

It snowed in Tokyo that summer;
the white flakes whispered in
on the wind from Hiroshima,
and a small boy laughed
at the way the light lifted
from his brother's body
who had been there
and was now coming home.

iv

We mourn for those who cannot mourn;
We walk for those who cannot walk.
The day stands at the brink of dawn,
But sidles backward into dark.

No gun can guard against the fear
That love might labor in disguise,
Clad as an enemy in war,
Clad as a dark-eyed child who dies.

Who rides the black horse of his hate
Needs a wise hand to take the rein,
Calm the wild steed, unset the bit,
And watch the dawn return again.

THE GLORY BE PRAYER

The Glory Be prayer is most familiar from the Rosary where it is recited at the end of each decade of the Hail Mary. It goes back many centuries and is known also by its Latin name and version as the Gloria Patri (Glory Be to the Father). It is also referred to in some older prayer books and scholarly writings as a doxology (which is a fancy name for a short expression of praise for God).

The tradition for the doxology comes from the Jewish synagogues. St. Paul often used doxologies similar to the Glory Be in his letters. For example: he referred to “the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, be honor forever and ever. Amen.” in the conclusion of his letter to the Romans (Rom 16:27).

Centuries later, in 1608, the famous bishop St. Francis de Sales ended his classic book Introduction to the Devout Life in a similar fashion: “Glory be to Jesus, to Whom, with the Father and the Holy Ghost, be honour and glory, now and ever, and to all Eternity. Amen.” Notice how this
sentiment resounds in the Glory Be itself:

Glory be to the Father,
And to the Son,
And to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now,
And ever shall be,
World without end. Amen.

Many people make the sign of the cross when reciting this prayer or one of its variants which the priest says at the start of Mass: “In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.”

The Glory Be prayer reaffirms the eternal glory of our “God in Three Persons, Blessed Trinity,” as our Triune God is called in the well known hymn Holy Holy Holy. Let us try each day, in reciting this prayer and others, to be open to God’s graces, so that we may live our lives as hymns of praise to Our Creator.

The Apostles' Creed

Like the Nicene Creedit is a solid profession of the fundamental truths of our faith:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth; (The 1st article)
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; (The 2nd)
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the Virgin Mary, (The 3rd)
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died, and was buried. (The 4th)
He descended into hell;
The third day he rose again from the dead; (The 5th)
He ascended into Heaven,
And is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty;
(The 6th)
From thence he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
(The 7th)
I believe in the Holy Spirit, (The 8th)
The Holy Catholic Church,
The Communion of Saints, (The 9th)
The forgiveness of sins, (The 10th)
The resurrection of the body, (The 11th)
And life everlasting. Amen. (The 12th)

It’s hard to summarize the Apostles' Creed in a few short paragraphs.
The current Cathecism of the Catholic Church offers some 200-plus pages of excellent analysis of this prayer. The earlier Roman Cathecism (known also as the Cathecism of the Council of Trent, from the 16th century)
goes to similar lengths! Still there are a few points worth mentioning on some of the articles.

Although the Apostles' Creed covers Christ's life in a short summary, it by no means slights the Father or the Holy Spirit! Indeed, in the first article we affirm our faith in the God the Father. He is the first person of One God that has existed throughout eternity in the Holy Trinity, in three coequal persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit:

•The Father as Creator;
•The Son as the begotten Word made flesh and our Redeemer; and
•The Holy Spirit as the one who proceeds from the Father and Son and can help us attain the essential attributes of holiness.
(These include what we call the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, knowledge, counsel fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord.)

In the first few centuries of the Church, some people couldn’t quite grasp the concept of the Holy Trinity and sought to refute either Christ's divinity or His humanity.

We see this today in books such as The Da Vinci Code which imply that His divinity was a fourth century fabrication. Nothing could be further from the truth! One can look at such works as Amy Welborn’s best seller de-coding Da Vinci for quite a few facts debunking this claim, (de-bunking Da Vinci, as it were)!

As St. Peter wrote in one of his New Testament letters “We have not by following artificial fables made known to you the power, and presence of our Lord Jesus Christ; but we were eyewitnesses of his greatness” (2 Peter 1:16).

He described in further detail in this letter our Lord’s transfiguration once
in which He appeared to be "shining, exceedingly white as snow" while conversing with Moses and Elijah (Mark 9:2-4).

St. John, for his part, mentioned signs Jesus showed of his divinity in his Gospel, “that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.” (John 20:31)

(So much for Our Lord’s just being some wise philosopher, as some people would have you believe these days!)

St. Thomas Aquinas, in a lengthy commentary on the Apostles' Creed, noted concerning the third article (concerning Our Lord’s conception and birth) that Jesus “became man that He might make man divine.”

He also pointed out in referring to the articles in the Apostles' Creed concerning Jesus's suffering, death, and glorious ascension into Heaven (Articles 4-6) that these events took place in accordance with His own will and by His own power, for our sake.

(The Ascension of our Lord is depicted in this painting at left by the Northern Italian painter Andrea Mantegna from the 15th Century.)

As Jesus put it in John’s Gospel: “I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have the power to lay it down, and
I have the power to take it up again.” (John 10:17-18)

The line in the fifth Apostles' Creed article “He descended into hell” is also written in some sources as “He descended to the dead.” This refers not only to the place of eternal torment of the damned that we rightly dread, but also in this specific instance to a more benign place for the souls of the just who had died before Jesus.

Our Lord opened the gates of Heaven for them upon His death and resurrection. (And, indeed, those gates are open for all of us who die in a state of grace, free from mortal sin, to join Him in Eternal Life!)

Jesus's place at the right hand of the Father, in Article 6 of the Apostles' Creed, is meant to show us His special place with His Heavenly Father as one with Him, in a manner that we can understand as human beings. St. Paul makes reference to this when he urges us to “seek the things that are above; where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God” (3 Col. 3:1).

It also highlights our Lord's role as the one mediator between God and Man. Who better to bridge the gap between us and our Creator than God Himself in the person of His Son! Indeed, through Jesus we can call God the Father Our Father, as we say in the Lord's Prayer.

In article 7 of the Apostles' Creed, note that Christ will return and will judge all of us, living and dead, in the Last Judgment, separating the sheep from the goats (Matt. 25:32-33), the just from the wicked, as it were. The former will have eternal Life and joy in Heaven (touching on Article 12 here) and the latter will be in eternal misery in Hell.

This general judgment will basically reaffirm the particular judgment
each of us will receive upon our death, as to whether or not our ultimate destination is Heaven or Hell. This will be based on our actions in this life (in what we have done and what we have failed to do, as we say at Mass) and on how receptive we have been to God's graces.

We need not fear this judgment. We must prepare for it by living lives of faith, love and obedience to God. Having a strong prayer life can be a great help in this regard!

The subsequent articles of the Apostles' Creed follow a natural sequence. The Holy Spirit guides and instructs the Catholic Church, from which comes the Communion of Saints (Articles 8 and 9). This includes those of us in the Church living on earth, those in purgatory, and all those in Heaven.

Thus the Communion of Saints follows from the Church which follows from its founder, Our Lord Jesus Christ, through the Holy Spirit. (Jesus himself sent the Holy Spirit, whom He called the paraclete, to help build His church.)

Likewise, when God forgives us our sins (Article 10 of the Apostles'
Creed) in the Church's sacrament of penance we may better merit the “resurrection of the body” (Article 11) in which we will be raised up to Heaven, with our glorified bodies united with our souls, at the Last Judgment.

Let us all pray to live our lives, with God's help and grace, in such a manner that at our death, as we read in the famous prayer Anima Christi, He might summon us so that with His saints we may praise Him forever in the bliss of heaven. Talk about life everlasting (article 12)! This wonderful hope for an Eternity of Love in the peace of Christ makes a fitting end to the Apostles' Creed.

MessageSujet: Re: Christian prayers   Christian prayers - Page 2 Icon_minitimeSam 6 Juin - 5:23

LORD i confess that i went to a fortune teller, i shouldn't have done it, i realize it was a sin, i ask YOU to forive me, and realize me from its conseqences, in JESUS name, Amen

LORD if i ever been involved in the occult, even ignorantly, whatever it was, i confess it is a sin, and i renounce it, i ask YOU to forgive me, and i commit myself now, that never again will i be involved with those things, forgive me LORD, and release me from their influence, right now, in the name of JESUS, Amen !

LORD JESUS CHRIST , i want to serve YOU, and to love YOU, if there is in my life, or in my family, the curse of freemasonery, or any other cult, i ask YOU to release me, and forgive me, and break its power over me, right now, in JESUS name, AMEN ,

HOLY SPIRIT we ask YOU now in JESUS name, speak to the heart of each one here, show us if there are areas of bitterness, ressentment, or unforgiveness, and make us willing to forgive

the HOLY SPIRIT may give you a specific name or names or a specific situation, now say this prayer

LORD, if there has been any hinder ressentmet in my heart, any unforgiveness, any bitterness, i renounce it now, i lay it down, if anyone has ever harmed me, or wronged me, i forgive them now, as i would have GOD forgive me, LORD i forgive them, in Your name LORD JESUS, and i believe YOU forgive me, thank YOU LORD, in JESUS name,

But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen
can a prayer be inspired by a battle?

after supposedly seeing a frightening vision: evil spirits, trying to fulfill Satan’s boast to destroy our Lord’s Church within a century, were engaging in fierce attacks against it. Although the Pontiff saw St. Michael casting Satan (also known as the devil) and his demons back into Hell in his vision, he was so horrified by what he had seen he felt compelled to help defend our faith in this struggle.

In the Saint Michael prayer he throws down the gauntlet to “the father of lies” as Jesus calls the devil in John’s Gospel (8:44), by enlisting the help of a very special Archangel:

please dear YESHUA, ask Saint Michael the Archangel to
defend us in battle. Tell him to be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O King of Kings, by the Divine Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

St. Michael makes a great general in this fight between Christ and Satan for our souls! After all, we read in Revelation (12:7-9) that “there was a great battle in heaven; Michael and his angels fought with the dragon...and that great dragon...who is called the devil and Satan, who seduces the whole world...was cast unto the earth, and his angels [the demons] were thrown down with him.”

St. Michael’s very name (in Hebrew, Micha’el meaning “Who is like to God?”) denotes the war cry uttered in that battle. Note that when we talk about Satan or the devil here we are also referring to his “army” of fallen angels, the evil spirits referred to in the Saint Michael prayer.

As a special patron and protector of the Church, St. Michael has been assigned to fight against Satan; to protect faithful souls from him, especially at their death; to champion God’s people; and, further along this line, to escort them to their judgment.

urged the faithful keep to reciting it.

Although we tend to downplay the notion of the devil as being too quaint or outmoded today, he does indeed exist and not just as a symbol of evil, or as character in a fairytale to frighten us.

We obviously can’t excuse all our sins and failures by saying, as the comedian Flip Wilson did in a line he made famous, “The devil made me do it!” After all, God allows us to be tempted but gives us the grace and the free will to choose Him and not the devil.

Still, we shouldn’t assume the devil is just some cartoon figure. Priests such as Father Malachi Martin and Father Gabriele Amorth have written extensively of their struggles with demons during exorcisms.

One of Satan’s greatest assets is his camouflage, the belief that he doesn’t exist, as Father Martin once noted in his acclaimed book Hostage to the Devil. Father Martin felt strongly that disbelief in Satan and the forces of evil leaves us unable to resist them.

On the subject of resistance, keep in mind that we can and should say
the Saint Michael prayer at church or just on our own during the day for spiritual protection for ourselves and for others as well!

Satan was unable to destroy the Catholic Church in the 20th century, but certainly our faith withstood terrible onslaughts just from Hitler and Stalin alone. We are still engaged in that war that has gone for all of human history, in one form or another, between God and the devil.

Each of us has had our own battles against the dark side trying to turn us away from eternal life with our Creator. Satan’s idea for our eternal life is one spent with him in hatred and misery and he’s after as many souls as he can get!

As St. Peter once noted “be sober and watch, because your adversary the devil as a roaring lion, goes about seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:Cool. “The evil spirits who roam about the world seeking the ruin of souls” mentioned in the Saint Michael prayer have surely been busy, but in asking for help we can fight back against them every day.

Prayer and the sacraments are an essential part of what St. Paul called the “armor of God” in his letter to the Ephesians. The Saint Michael
prayer can help us indeed “stand against the deceits of the devil" (Eph 6:11) by “taking the shield of faith” (Eph 6:16). Remember, God permits us to be tempted by the devil but gives us the grace to resist him through prayer in our daily lives.

Let us not be afraid to ask for St. Michael’s help in this prayer and others listed here like it. We need to remember that each time we pray we work to defeat our real enemies, not each other, but rather the devil and his evil spirits.

As St. Paul put it, we fight “not against flesh and blood but against principalities and power, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness” (Eph 6:12). With God’s help in prayer they can all be overcome.
