The mohair industry

Mohair, the long, smooth fiber used in sweaters, hats, and other fluffy accessories, comes from angora goats (leading many to confuse it with angora wool, which comes from angora rabbits). Most of the world’s mohair originates in South Africa and the U.S. (particularly Texas), where angora goats are bred primarily for their soft inner coats, which are generally shorn twice a year, beginning as early as six months after birth. A PETA eyewitness investigation of 12 angora goat farms in South Africa—the world’s top mohair producer—documented rampant abuse. Workers dragged goats by their horns and legs, threw them across the floor, mutilated them, and even cut the throats of fully conscious ones. Some shearers lifted the goats up off the floor by the tail, likely breaking it at the spine. Goats are prey animals, which means that being pinned down during the shearing process is especially terrifying for them. Goat kids who were being shorn for the first time were heard screaming in pain and fear.

Workers in the mohair trade are paid by volume, not by the hour, so they’re driven to work quickly and carelessly. Shearers cut broad swaths of skin off some animals—and crudely stitched up the most gaping wounds right there on the filthy shearing floor, without providing any pain relief whatsoever. Workers also used tattoo pliers to punch sharp needles through goats’ ears to identify the animals, causing many to cry out in intense pain. Goats deemed no longer profitable died agonizing deaths. One worker sawed through their throats with a dull knife and then broke their necks. Other goats were hauled to a slaughterhouse, jolted with electricity, hung upside down by one leg, slashed across the throat, bled, and skinned. On some farms, workers also dehorn kids at the age of 1 or 2 weeks, typically by burning their horns off with a hot iron or applying a caustic chemical paste, which causes them to rub or scratch their heads in pain—potentially resulting in severe burns or blindness if the paste is transferred to their skin or eyes. Males also endure painful testicle removal using rubber rings, which leaves them in distress for days and often leads to tetanus infection. These procedures are usually carried out without any pain relief.

Goats’ horns may be burned off with a hot iron when they are 1 or 2 weeks old. Typically, no pain relief is given. An angora goat on a ranch near San Antonio bleats during shearing, a process that requires goats to be held down. In some cases, their legs are tied together. Shearing robs goats of their natural insulation, and unlike sheep, they don’t carry layers of body fat. They’re easily susceptible to internal parasites and cold temperatures, experiencing high mortality rates if left without shelter after shearing, as they often are. They’re so sensitive that summer winds and rain can kill them even when temperatures aren’t low, and shearing them in the winter causes many to die of pneumonia. Their hypothermia also makes them vulnerable to infections, nutritional deficiencies, and other often fatal problems. One worker told PETA Asia’s eyewitness that in just one weekend, 40,000 goats died of exposure across South Africa. Another said that up to 80 percent die after shearing on some farms.

After shearing, angora goats lack the covering that they need to avoid the deadly effects of becoming chilled. They’re often rapidly shorn in as little as five minutes, which can lead to bloody wounds. (Workers left a covering of hair on the backs of the goats seen here, as they were shorn in the winter, but it will still be difficult for the animals to retain their natural insulation. Unlike sheep, goats do not carry layers of body fat.) Angora goats used for mohair are killed well short of their natural 10-year life expectancy—as soon as they’re no longer useful to the industry because they cannot reproduce or because drought, illness, or several years of rough shearing have reduced the quality or regrowth rate of their hair. They’re often shorn one final time before being sold for meat, or they may be slaughtered for their skin, which is used to produce clothing, rugs, and other items. Buyers cram the animals into trucks for transport to slaughter and may drive for as long as 35 hours to get them to market as quickly as possible. At the slaughterhouse, they’re killed by captive bolt guns, electric shock, or direct throat slitting.

Some clothing producers and retailers claim that the animal hair and skin that they sell are byproducts of the meat industry. But angora goats are raised specifically for their coats, and many never make it to slaughter. When they become too old or no longer produce desirable hair, angora goats are slaughtered and their skins sold to produce clothing, rugs, and accent pieces, such as the hide seen here. As mohair sales increase, the market for angora goat meat also expands—particularly for kid meat, known as capretto. Goats’ flesh may also be labeled chevon in meat markets in an attempt to portray it as a European “delicacy.” If you purchase mohair, you’re supporting an industry that slaughters animals for meat.

Mohair production is also a drain on resources and environmentally destructive. To produce 1 pound of mohair, goats must be fed between 40 and 50 pounds of high-quality feed grown on land that could instead be used to grow crops to feed humans. Land degradation as a result of overstocking and overgrazing is common. A worker in South Africa carries a young goat by his leg in this 2014 image. Standard agricultural practices include routine abuse, as the animals used for food and fashion are a means to a profitable end. There’s no excuse for supporting an industry that abuses and kills millions of goats every year, especially when there are plenty of warm, cozy, and stylish fabrics available that aren’t made from mohair. Please join the millions of people all over the world who know that compassion is in fashion. Leave animal hair and skins out of your wardrobe and join the vegan fashion revolution today.

what is mohair and how does it hurt goats ?

You may have seen mohair on a tag before and been like what’s that? *shrug* I’ll take it! Well, stop doing that. It’s bad. Mohair is a long, smooth fiber used in sweaters, hats, and other accessories that comes from angora goats. (It’s different from angora wool, which comes from angora rabbits.) Here’s why it’s cruel: Workers dehorn baby goats when they’re only 1 or 2 weeks old, typically by burning their horns off with a hot iron or with caustic chemical paste, which causes severe burns or even blindness if it gets on their skin or eyes. The babies try to rub their heads to ease the pain. Goats may endure the pain of having their horns burned out with a hot iron, a procedure typically done when they’re 1 or 2 weeks old, as in this image. This procedure is typically done without any pain relief. A worker in South Africa carries a young goat by his leg in this 2014 image. Standard agricultural practices include routine abuse, as the animals used for food and fashion are exploited for profit. Males’ testicles are removed using rubber rings, which leaves them in distress for days and often leads to tetanus infection.

Pain relief? Don’t kid yourself—the baby goats don’t get anything like that. These sensitive animals have many complex needs, including specific nutritional requirements, which are usually not met on mohair farms. That’s just the beginning: To obtain mohair, workers often tie the goats’ legs together, pin the animals to the ground, and shear them with electric shears or large clippers. Being restrained like this is particularly horrifying for prey animals. And because workers are paid per animal shorn—not by the hour—they work fast, frequently injuring the goats and cause gaping wounds. An angora goat on a ranch near San Antonio, Texas, bleats during shearing, a process that requires goats to be held down, as in this image. (In some cases, their legs are tied together.) After shearing, angora goats lack the covering they need to avoid the deadly effects of becoming chilled. They’re so sensitive that summer winds and rain can kill them even when temperatures aren’t low, and shearing them in the winter causes many to die of pneumonia.

Their miserable lives are ended by a painful, terrifying death: As soon as the industry can no longer exploit them for maximum profit, the goats are sold for meat or slaughtered for their skin. Buyers cram them into trucks bound for the slaughterhouse for rides as long as 35 hours. Once there, humans kill them with a captive-bolt gun, electric shock, or slit their throats. When they become old or no longer produce desirable hair, angora goats are slaughtered and their skins sold to produce clothing, rugs, and accent pieces, such as the hide seen here. Mohair production is also destructive to the planet. One pound of mohair requires that goats be fed between 40 and 50 pounds of feed grown on land that could have been used to grow crops to feed humans. “Overstocking” and “overgrazing” commonly cause land degradation—particularly in Lesotho.

what you can do

Never buy any product that contains mohair or any other animal derived material. Plenty of cozy fabrics aren’t made from mohair or wool, so you never have to support this cruel, exploitative, and destructive treatment of animals. Just check the labels before you buy!

! SPREAD THE WORD!

Groundbreaking Exposé: Goats thrown, cut, , killed for mohair

You’ve never seen anything like this before. This video will make you leave that mohair sweater, blanket, or ball of yarn on the shelf. As first reported by The Washington Post, a disturbing PETA Asia investigation—the first of its kind—reveals that workers dragged, roughly handled, threw around, mutilated, and even cut the throats of fully conscious goats, some of whom cried out, in South Africa, the world’s top mohair producer. This groundbreaking footage highlights just some of the abuse documented on all 12 of the angora goat farms the eyewitness visited. After talks with peta, arcadia group has stopped placing orders for mohair products across its eight brands, which include topshop. gap inc. has also agreed to stop placing orders containing mohair, including for its gap, old navy, banana republic, and athleta brands. And inditex, one of the world’s largest clothing retailers and owner of zara, will ban mohair from its seven apparel brands by 2020. The H&M group—including its eight brands—has decided that it will no longer source mohair, effective immediately.

After hearing from thousands of compassionate shoppers like you, Forever 21 made the business-savvy and compassionate decision to ban mohair, and Anthropologie announced that as of March 2019, it “will not buy or produce products containing mohair.” Express, Inc., announced that it has “[no current or] future plans to include mohair in our assortment.” See the full list of top retailers that have now banned mohair. In August 2018, the National Council of SPCAs filed cruelty-to-animals charges against four angora goat farmers based on PETA Asia’s evidence. South Africa’s national police force is investigating the farmers—as well as shearers and farmworkers. No person—human or otherwise—deserves to be abused just so that another can wear a part of his or her body. Please, won’t you help these animals, too?

Terrified, crying out, roughly handled, and thrown across the floor

Shearing is extremely stressful to goats, who are prey animals and therefore terrified of being pinned down, vulnerable, and completely defenseless. Goat kids, who were being shorn for the first time, cried out in fear. Some shearers lifted the goats up off the floor by the tail, likely breaking it at the spine. When one goat struggled, the shearer sat on her. After shearing, workers threw the animals across the wooden floor and hauled them around by their legs. Angora goats are bred primarily for their soft inner coats, which are usually shorn twice a year, beginning when they’re as young as 6 months old. Shearing is extremely stressful to goats.

Systematic suffering

The coats of some of the goats were matted with feces. To clean off the mohair before shearing, one farmer dumped bucks into tanks of cleaning solution and shoved their heads underwater, which he admitted would poison them if they swallowed it. Shearers are paid by volume, not by the hour, which motivates them to work quickly and carelessly, leaving the goats cut up and bleeding from the face and ears. They cut off swaths of skin and, according to farmers, even teats. As workers crudely stitched them up right on the filthy shearing floor, they were given no pain relief whatsoever. Many goats were subjected to mutilation of their ears with pliers that punched sharp needles through them, causing them intense pain and, as one farmer described it, to “scream terribly.” Another farmer said his goats “shout and roll around” when castrated without anesthetics because “it’s bloody painful.” Still another farmer said, “We … just cut … off” a goat’s ear if it is believed to be cancerous. Yet another used a knife to cut into a goat’s torso—apparently without any pain relief—to try to drain what she called an “abscess.” The goats’ coats were matted with feces.

Goats struggled and cried out in pain when holes were punched in their ears with pliers like these.
Thousands and Thousands of deaths before and after shearing. One farmer said that at least 25 percent of goats on some farms die before their first shearing, which usually occurs when they are 6 months old. Shearing robs goats of their natural insulation. Farmers admitted that after shearing, many goats die of exposure to the cold wind and rain. One man said that in just one weekend, 40,000 goats died of exposure across South Africa. Another said that up to 80 percent of goats die after shearing on some farms. Other goats died of injuries or of thirst after getting stuck in thorns while looking for food in farmers’ fields. Workers even sheared the rotting corpses of dead goats. Goats are prey animals and therefore terrified of being pinned down, vulnerable, and completely defenseless. Shearing robs goats of their natural insulation. They’re highly susceptible to cold temperatures and experience high mortality rates if left without shelter, as they often are, for four to six weeks after shearing.

Goats deemed unprofitable died agonizing deaths

Goats who survive repeated shearing continue to be exploited for their mohair for five or six years, until their teeth are “completely worn down” from eating a rough, coarse diet and they can no longer eat. After that, about 90 percent of the surviving angora goats in south africa are sold for crude backyard slaughter. At one farm, a worker slowly cut the throats of fully conscious goats with a dull knife and then broke their necks. He hacked one animal’s head right off. The other remained conscious and was kicking for more than a minute after the worker made his first cut. Other goats are hauled to slaughterhouses. On the kill floor that the eyewitness visited, goats were jolted with electricity, hung upside down by one leg, slashed across the throat, bled, and skinned. Some clothing industries and retailers claim that the animal hair, skin, and feathers they sell are byproducts of the meat industry. But angora goats are raised specifically for their coats, and many never even make it to slaughter. Angora goats used for mohair are killed far short of their natural 10-year life expectancy—as soon as they’re no longer useful to the industry. These are the remains of one goat who was slaughtered while fully conscious. This is one of nine goats found dead one morning after reportedly being killed by a predator.

You can help stop this !

The best thing that you can do for angora goats is refuse to buy mohair! It’s easy to check the label when you’re shopping. If it includes the word “mohair,” leave it on the shelf. Please ask free people to drop mohair immediately in favor of animal-friendly materials that are free of cruelty. South Africa produces most of the world’s mohair, but few people know how it is obtained or that it comes from goats like these.
