PETA Exposes Mohair Industry: Goats thrown, cut, and killed in south africa

A disturbing PETA investigation – the first of its kind – reveals that workers dragged, roughly handled, threw around, mutilated, and even cut the throats of fully conscious goats, some of whom cried out, in South Africa, the world’s top mohair producer. This groundbreaking footage highlights just some of the abuse documented on all 12 of the angora-goat farms the eyewitness visited. After talks with PETA UK, Arcadia Group – which owns Topshop – is the first international retailer to halt all production of items containing mohair and adopt an immediate ban on its use in all future collections across its eight brands. Gap Inc has also agreed to stop placing orders for products containing mohair after talks with PETA US. And Inditex, one of the world’s largest clothing retailers and owner of Zara, will ban mohair from its seven apparel brands by 2020. However, many brands continue to sell mohair products.

Terrified and crying out

Shearing is extremely stressful to goats, who are prey animals and therefore terrified of being pinned down, vulnerable, and completely defenceless. Goat kids who were being shorn for the first time cried out in fear. Some shearers lifted the goats up off the floor by the tail, likely breaking it at the spine. When one goat struggled, the shearer sat on her. After shearing, workers threw the animals across the wooden floor and hauled them around by their legs.

Systematic suffering

The coats of some of the goats were matted with faeces. To clean off the mohair before shearing, one farmer dumped rams into tanks of cleaning solution and shoved their heads underwater, though he admitted swallowing the liquid would poison the animals. Shearers are paid by volume, not by the hour, which motivates them to work quickly and carelessly, leaving the goats cut up and bleeding from the face and ears. They cut off swaths of skin and, according to farmers, even teats. As workers crudely stitched the animals up right on the filthy shearing floor, they were given no pain relief whatsoever. Many goats’ ears were mutilated with pliers that punched sharp needles through them, causing the animals intense pain and, as one farmer described it, to “scream terribly”. Another farmer said his goats “shout and roll around” when castrated without pain relief because “it’s bloody painful”. Still another farmer said, “We … just cut … off” a goat’s ear if it’s believed to be cancerous. Yet another used a knife to cut into a goat’s torso – apparently without any pain relief – to try to drain what she called an “abscess”.

Thousands of deaths

One farmer said that at least 25 per cent of goats on some farms die before their first shearing, which usually occurs when they are 6 months old. Shearing robs goats of their natural insulation. Farmers admitted that after shearing, many animals die of exposure to the cold wind and rain. One man said that in just one weekend, 40,000 goats died of exposure across South Africa. Another said that up to 80 per cent of goats die after shearing on some farms. Other goats died from injuries or thirst after getting stuck in thorns while looking for food in farmers’ fields. Workers even sheared the rotting corpses of dead goats.

Goats deemed unprofitable died agonising deaths

Goats who survive repeated shearing continue to be exploited for their mohair for five or six years, until their teeth are “completely worn down” from eating a rough, coarse diet and they can no longer eat. After that, about 90 per cent of the surviving angora goats in South Africa are sold for crude backyard slaughter. On one farm, a worker slowly cut the throats of fully conscious goats with a dull knife and then broke their necks. He hacked one animal’s head right off. Another remained conscious and was kicking for more than a minute after the worker made his first cut. Other goats are hauled to abattoirs. On the killing floor that the eyewitness visited, goats were jolted with electricity, hung upside down by one leg, slashed across the throat, bled, and skinned. Some clothing manufacturers and retailers claim that the animal hair, skin, and feathers they sell are by-products of the meat industry. But angora goats are raised specifically for their coats, and many never even make it to slaughter.

You can help stop this

The best thing that you can do for angora goats is to refuse to buy mohair. Vegan fashion – clothes, shoes, and accessories that contain no leather, fur, wool, exotic skins, or any other animal-derived material – is revolutionising the way that we shop and dress. What is mohair?

Mohair is a long, smooth fiber used in sweaters, hats, and other fluffy accessories. You may recognize the word but be unfamiliar with how it’s actually obtained, but be warned: As with all animal-derived textiles, the production of mohair garments involves suffering and slaughter. Mohair is taken from angora goats. Maybe you’ve heard of angora before, but if you see the word “angora” (or “angora wool”) on a clothing tag, don’t confuse that with mohair. Angora wool is an entirely different material that’s violently obtained from rabbits. Most of the world’s mohair originates in South Africa and the U.S. (particularly Texas). Angora goats are bred primarily for their soft inner coats, which are generally shorn twice a year, beginning as early as six months after birth. But the problems with mohair begin well before then, and they continue until the day the goats are slaughtered.

Here’s why you should never buy or wear mohair:

PAINFUL DEHORNING

Workers dehorn baby goats when they’re 1 or 2 weeks old, typically by burning their horns off with a hot iron or applying a caustic chemical paste, which can cause severe burns or blindness if it gets on the animals’ skin or into their eyes. Males also endure painful testicle removal using rubber rings, which can leave them in distress for days and often leads to tetanus infection. These procedures are usually carried out without any pain relief. Goats’ horns may be burned off with a hot iron when they are 1 or 2 weeks old. Typically, no pain relief is given.

ROUGH HANDLING

A PETA eyewitness investigation of 12 angora goat farms in South Africa—the world’s top mohair producer—documented workers dragging goats by their horns and legs, throwing them across the floor, mutilating them, and even cutting the throats of fully conscious ones. Some shearers lifted the goats up off the floor by the tail, likely breaking it at the spine. NEGLECT

Angora goats are so sensitive to temperature differences that summer winds and rain can kill them, even when temperatures aren’t low. Shearing them in the winter causes many goats to die of pneumonia. They also experience high mortality rates when they’re left without shelter after shearing, which many of them are. One worker told PETA Asia’s eyewitness that in just one weekend, 40,000 goats died of exposure across South Africa. Another said that up to 80 percent of goats die after shearing on some farms. After shearing, angora goats lack the covering that they need to avoid the deadly effects of becoming chilled. They are often rapidly shorn in as little as five minutes, which can lead to bloody wounds. (Workers left a covering of hair on the backs of the goats seen here, as they were shorn in the winter, but it will still be difficult for the animals to retain their natural insulation. Unlike sheep, goats do not carry layers of body fat.)

SLAUGHTER

Goats are killed as soon as they’re no longer useful to the industry—well short of their natural 10-year life expectancy. They’re often shorn one final time before being sold for meat, or they may be slaughtered for their skin, which is used to produce clothing, rugs, and other items. PETA Asia’s exposé documented that one worker sawed through goats’ throats with a dull knife and then broke their necks. Other goats were hauled to a slaughterhouse, jolted with electricity, hung upside down by one leg, slashed across the throat, bled, and skinned. When they become too old or no longer produce desirable hair, angora goats are slaughtered and their skins sold to produce clothing, rugs, and accent pieces, such as the hide seen here.

If you purchase mohair, you’re also supporting an industry that slaughters goats for meat and wreaks further destruction on the environment. As mohair sales increase, the market for angora goat meat also expands—particularly for kid meat (yes, it’s just as horrifying as it sounds). What’s more, to produce 1 pound of mohair, goats must be fed between 40 and 50 pounds of high-quality feed that was grown on land that could’ve been used to grow crops for human consumption instead.
