Help animals facing monstrous, deadly experiments

No fiction writer could create a story more horrifying than what animals around the world endure in monstrous new genetic engineering experiments. For a female mouse, the nightmare begins when experimenters inject her with hormones and then cut into her abdomen to rip out her eggs. There's important progress to report on protecting animals from painful tests

I hope this e-mail finds you well. I think you will be stunned to read what has happened since I last wrote. Of course, at this moment, we both know that many animals are still cowering in metal cages, dreading the sound of the laboratory door opening and the next worker entering to subject them to more painful experiments. The animals' plight, their fear, is almost unimaginable—but PETA and our international affiliates are making absolutely fantastic progress toward stopping their suffering and showing caring people how they can help, too. Not only do we expose the abuse and neglect that experimenters try desperately to hide so that people know what to support and what not to, we are also actively promoting modern, non-animal research methods that can replace animal tests. Thanks to your support, PETA is making a difference:

We make sure that corporations realize they cannot get away with conducting or funding horrific tests on gentle mice and rats and then killing them—all so that they can make marketing claims about their products. In fact, already, PETA and our international affiliates have persuaded corporate giants like General Mills, Nissin Foods Holdings (the owner of Top Ramen noodles), Riken Vitamin, Suntory Holdings (which owns Jim Beam, Maker's Mark, and other beverages), and others to end tests on animals. When the world learned that carmaker Volkswagen (VW) had funded an experiment in which macaque monkeys were locked in chambers and forced to inhale diesel fumes for hours, PETA Germany and PETA U.S. launched an international campaign to end this cruelty. It worked! VW agreed never to fund such tests on animals again and to accept PETA affiliates' help. The PETA International Science Consortium—of which PETA is a member—is working to replace hideous inhalation tests on animals by promoting computer modeling and 3-dimensional tissues that mimic realistic human exposure. This will spare countless animals immense suffering in cruel tests every year. After hearing from PETA U.S. scientists, South Korea and Japan have stopped requiring a test in which dogs are poisoned with pesticides over the course of a whole year. These countries join the European Union, Canada, and the United States, which made the same move following detailed discussions with PETA U.S. scientists—sparing the lives of thousands of dogs each year.
Campaigns by PETA and our international affiliates have persuaded—or pushed—nearly every major commercial and cargo airline to stop shipping primates destined for laboratories, sparking a movement so successful that desperate research trade groups are now trying to use legal force to coerce airlines into helping them in their violent business, but we are fighting back.
Most commercial antitoxins are manufactured through an inherently cruel, archaic method that hasn't changed in more than 100 years. In hideous facilities in India, horses and other equines, such as mules, are kept in crowded, filthy conditions so that they can be injected with spider and snake venom and subjected to painful blood draws, over and over again. Following a series of damning inspections, the PETA International Science Consortium began funding a project to develop antitoxins without subjecting any horse to pain, fear, and suffering—and after discussions with PETA India, the Indian government itself urged researchers to develop cruelty-free antivenins.
Together, we're creating real change for all the sensitive beings suffering in laboratories.

I'll never forget what I've seen in animal laboratories

I've always been interested in animals, and I've dedicated my career to helping them. But nothing prepared me for the horrors I've seen inside animal laboratories. I've seen mice torn apart by cagemates who had been driven insane and made aggressive by the stress of confinement. I've visited laboratories where dogs are experimented on, and I'll never forget the anguished cries of the lonely animals there. I've observed primates imprisoned in cramped, almost barren cages, which have no ropes for them to swing on, and given no opportunity to socialise. They're so desperate for affection that they reach out to passing visitors, hoping for someone – anyone – to stop and notice them. In the coming months, millions of sensitive animals will be locked up in cages and used in cruel, painful experiments. I've seen their misery first hand – and we need to do everything we can to end it.

Those images will forever haunt me. Later, when I became a lecturer on animal behaviour and welfare, I'd often take my students to a nearby laboratory. Even though I would warn them about what they'd see inside, most would still come out shaken and crying. I spent years believing that I could somehow improve animals' lives in their laboratory prisons – but eventually, I realised that the only way to achieve meaningful change for these animals is to get them out of laboratories. That's when I came to work at PETA and dedicated my life to stopping animal tests.

No cat deserves to be miserable and mutilated

Like all cats, Double Trouble deserved a life of care and affection. But instead, she endured many, many months of terrible misery. Experimenters implanted metal coils in her eyes and screwed a bolt into the top of her head. She then developed infections at the surgery sites, and her face became partially paralysed. When she became too ill to continue and the experiment failed, she was killed. The experimenters repeatedly tormented Double Trouble … kept her caged and suffering … and then decapitated her corpse to dissect her brain – out of curiosity. Right now, countless animals like Double Trouble are suffering in cruel experiments in the UK and around the world. But there's something you can do to help them. Exposed: Horses Abused for Their Blood

In a crowded, filthy enclosure in India, a malnourished horse trembles in fear as workers with large-bore needles approach her to extract large volumes of her blood. She's forced to endure the same excruciatingly frightening and painful process multiple times each month, but her suffering doesn't end there. Day after day, she's kept tightly tied up, barely able to move, and denied the opportunity to roam, graze freely, or even stand on floors that aren't covered with waste. This horse is just one of thousands of equines imprisoned around the world who are right now treated as nothing more than living incubators for drug companies. Experts authorised by the Animal Welfare Board of India, including PETA India and affiliated scientists and veterinarians, inspected 10 facilities that extract blood from horses, donkeys, and mules to produce drugs such as antitoxins and antivenins – and they discovered rampant abuse and neglect almost everywhere they turned. Many of the animals were fearful and anxious, and they often suffered from hoof disease, malnourishment, infections, parasites, and eye conditions. Even dying horses were denied the veterinary care they desperately needed! The abuse found at hideous facilities like these is horrific, but with help from kind people like you, we can do even more to end it. Will you please support PETA's work for horses, donkeys, and all other animals abused in crude and painful experiments? After PETA India revealed the misery endured by horses, mules, and donkeys who are bled over and over, thousands of caring people called for Indian authorities to deny or revoke drug-production facilities' licences to use animals. Geese plucked raw, bleeding, crying out in pain

Help end the torture of geese. If you can imagine being lifted up, swung around by your neck, and then pinned down so that clumps of hair can be torn out of your head—without painkillers—you might have an idea of the agony that geese endure every time that they're "live-plucked."

Eyewitnesses have documented that workers—even on some so-called "responsible" and "humane" farms—step on birds' wings and necks, put them in chokeholds, and yank their feathers out hard enough to tear their skin open. URGENT: Abandoned Dolphin, Penguins Need Your Help

A dolphin called Honey, 46 penguins, and hundreds of fish and reptiles have been abandoned at Inubosaki Marine Park Aquarium in Choshi, Japan, after it shut down earlier this year. Former employees are reportedly feeding the animals, but Honey has been left imprisoned in a tiny, filthy pool with green, cloudy water, and penguins have been spotted in unsafe enclosures littered with debris. Honey—who was captured in 2005 near Taiji during Japan's annual dolphin slaughter—is growing increasingly frustrated and stressed from being deprived of everything that's natural and important to her. If she's transferred to another aquarium, she'll likely spend the rest of her life in a tiny tank, being forced to perform circus-style tricks for food. It's vital that all the animals imprisoned at the run-down aquarium be released to sanctuaries, where they'd be protected and free from harassment. PETA stands ready to help with their relocation. Goats thrown, cut, and killed for mohair. Please help stop this! It is a ghastly scene, but we're out to stop it, and we can with your help. Goats cry out in terror as workers drag and throw them across the hard wooden floor of a shearing shed. Some are little more than babies, only 6 months old, experiencing this agony for what will be the first, but not the last, time. Others bear jagged scars from the last shearing that they endured, just months ago. No animal should suffer for a sweater, hat, or ball of yarn. There are just hours left. Please help. Please Help Goats Now! These are prey animals, so being held down fills them with dread that they are about to be killed. They are petrified, and they struggle and try to avoid the sharp shears that cut their faces and leave bloody gashes on their bodies as shearers pin them to the filthy floor, even sitting on them. When the workers have finished hacking off the soft hair, they crudely stitch up the animals' wounds, without any pain relief at all.

All this suffering is to remove the gentle goats' hair so that it can be sold to be made into mohair sweaters, hats, and yarn and shipped around the world. A recent PETA exposé of farms in South Africa revealed to millions of people the intense suffering and neglect that goats endure in the cruel mohair industry. Right now, on a massive farm in China, a terrified goose is crying out in pain as a worker violently tears out fistfuls of her feathers, leaving bloody, open wounds. Workers were seen tightly binding birds' feet together, stepping and pulling on their delicate wings and necks, and tearing their feathers right out while they struggled and screamed. Sick and injured chicks and adult geese and ducks were left to die slowly. Eyewitnesses saw dead birds decaying in crates and ponds and tossed out like trash. A few scattered, bloodied body parts, including a severed head, and some guns: That was pretty much all that was left of three poachers who were reportedly mauled to death by a pride of lions after sneaking onto a nature reserve to kill rhinos for their horns.

“[T]he lions are our watchers and guardians and [the poachers] picked the wrong pride and became a meal,” Sibuya Game Reserve owner Nick Fox told Daily Express.

Fox told reporters that along with the bloody remains and empty shoes, staffers at the South African nature reserve found high-powered hunting rifles, axes (used to chop off rhinos’ horns), and enough food to last for several days. He also noted that there could be more half-eaten poachers unearthed in the thick 30-square-mile bushland. This year alone, nine rhinos from surrounding reserves have been shot and killed with high- powered rifles. It’s suspected that this was the gang responsible for those killings. Until the world rejects the morbid obsession that some humans have with dead animals’ body parts and realizes that living beings are not “trophies,” humans and other animals will both pay the price. Just like other animals whose body parts are fetishized, rhinos are slaughtered and their bodies are mutilated. Whether they’re in the wild or in captivity, these individuals live in mortal danger of being killed by callous humans who can sell a single one of their horns for tens of thousands of dollars on the black market.

Hunters kill millions of animals every year and have contributed to the extinction of species all around the world, including the Tasmanian tiger, the Zanzibar leopard, and the dodo. Rhinos are on course to suffer a similar fate. Western black rhinos and their northern white counterparts have become extinct in the wild, and a subspecies of the Javan rhino was declared extinct in the animals’ native Vietnam in 2011. Many humans have been killed by the same animals they intended to slaughter and claim as bloodlust trophies. PETA eyewitnesses visited multiple badger farms across China, which exports badger-hair brushes to countries worldwide. On every farm, they documented hellish conditions for the animals, including being confined to cramped wire cages and often suffering from severe, untreated injuries. One's leg had even been chewed off by another badger in a nearby cage. To kill them, workers bashed the animals in the head with whatever object was handy. One was bludgeoned with a chair leg. Other badgers who are killed to make brushes are hunted illegally, using snares and other cruel methods—even though they're a "protected" species. If you buy animal-hair brushes, there's no way to know who was killed for them. Many of these brushes are manufactured in developing countries where there are few penalties for abusing animals—or none at all, such as in China. Please urge Dick Blick Art Materials and Gents Barbershop and Spa (GBS) to stop selling badger-hair brushes immediately and to end its support of this horrific industry.

We must not let the mohair industry cause goats such suffering!

The tags on sweaters, hats, and other items made with mohair don't mention the absolute terror of an angora goat kid violently shorn for the first time or reveal that workers plunge live goats into tanks of cleaning solution. The mohair industry doesn't think you'll ever find out that shearers handle goats so roughly that the animals sustain cuts to their faces and necks—or that workers sometimes remove hair from the rotting corpses of dead goats. It assumes you'll never discover that thousands of goats will succumb to exposure or predator attacks this year—or hear about the backyard slaughter operations where animals will be viciously butchered with dull knives.
