IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON LETTING YOUR FURBABY PASS TO THE BRIDGE AT HOME
I cannot stress enough the importance of finding a vet who will come to your home. You must plan in advance to do this...so, if your furbaby is old, start looking now. Some vets do this...they make "house calls". Many do not. It would be wonderful if the vet you now have...that your furbaby and you know and trust..would do this. But, please, make sure. You really don't need the added stress of having to find someone at the last minute or of having to resort to making that "final car ride". Your baby doesn't need it either. Not now! When I have time, I'm going to search for vets who will come to a persons home...then, I will post them for all to see. Meanwhile, please plan ahead.
God Bless all of you.
Cheryl

TO EVERYONE FROM ME AND SMUDGGIE
Regarding tomorrow nights "remembering" of Target...then, other fallen and unknown doggie heroes: When you do your "remembering", please honor your state and say your time zone (this vigil will be recognized around the world). Please dress your profile picture in a candle...you may tag my profile candle if you like. Please keep your prayers and your "silence" focused on Target and her fellow war heroes. Don't forget that it is in the silence and the "remembering" that speaks the loudest. For those of you who regularly attend our prayer vigil for "the suffering animals", everything will be as usual except for this: I will edit the "words on our candle" to suit this occasion...then, after three days it will go back to the way it was. Remember that this is a 36 hour vigil...you may pray at any time during this time. Most importantly, this is a vigil for TARGET...no other prayers should be on this vigil. I will begin the vigil at 6:30pm (12/3) CST...i will end the vigil at 6:30 pm (12/5) CST. The flame, by clicking on it, will bring you to the prayers...whether it be from my wall or from the "remembering Target" event....it doesn't matter...just click the flame to guide you. At this point, if we all join in, there will be 12,200 members lighting candles around the world. If we make a commitment to act as ONE, the sky will burn brightly. I pray that we do. God Bless us.
If there are any concerns or questions, please send me a message on my wall...
May our love shine on...
love from me and Smudggie (RIP baby girl)

http://rescue.forumactif.com/t80627-chico-male-xbraque-de-3ans-se-morfond-en-cage-evreux-27

J'aimerais tant jouer comme bon me semble...

Hi Everyone............

This year I have made a birthday wish through Precious Paws to raise $2,000 for our organization. We are currently trapping at a feral colony to get all of the adults fixed and rereleasing them.

Stop Dogs from Using Your Lawn as a Bathroom

Solutions for dealing with the toilet habits of your neighbors’ dogs have a lot to do with your personality. Are you the type to boldly confront people? Are you the “law and order” type who will go to any lengths to bring the culprit to justice with the local animal control officer? Maybe you don’t like confrontation so you try subversive ways of dealing with the problem. Or, are you more likely to be proactive and make use of various types of barriers to prevent the dogs from ever coming into your yard in the first place? Here are a few ideas about how to deal with this messy issue.

Confronting the responsible people

If you can identify the owner of the dog, you can try to have a simple and polite conversation with him. Personally, I have rarely found this to work, but maybe you will have better luck than I’ve had. Generally, if people are letting their dogs run free or are “looking the other way” while on a walk, then they probably could care less about the issue. Plus, depending on the neighbor, it could get ugly.

Yelling at people you catch in action can be effective – or get you in a fight, with someone who has a dog with them.

I did actually stop one boy from letting his dog poop on my tree belt. I photographed him and told him I was going to report him to the dog officer (we have a local ordinance with a $300 fine). I never saw him or his dog again.

•You can set out web cams to take note of the offending dog(s) and provide the evidence to the authorities.
•You can post signs, but dogs will often just pee on them.
•There are some that think placing the offending material back on the property of the dog’s owner will achieve the desired result. While you may feel some satisfaction by returning the favor, so to speak, you are more likely to start a feud with your neighbor.
•Networx editor Chaya Goodman has a friend who spray paints the offensive matter a Day-Glo color and leaves it on his lawn in order to highlight it to irresponsible dog owners. This doesn’t suit the aesthetic of many homeowners’ landscaping, but she credits her friend with inventiveness.

Deterring the dog

In conversations with friends about the topic of owners not cleaning up after their dogs, I ran into some amazingly strong feelings on the subject. And while it ticks me off too, I don’t recommend shooting at the dog with anything other than perhaps a high-powered water gun. The dog is only doing what comes naturally; it’s not personal. I admit however, to being intrigued by the idea of shooting the dog with a paintball gun to be able to identify him to the dog officer.

Dogs are attracted to smells and surfaces that have the right “paw feel” when looking for a place to do their business. If you also own a dog, other dogs will be attracted to your yard, drawn by both the smell and the intrinsic desire to “mark” a territory. Not only do you need to clean up really well after your own pet, you may need to use deterrent products around the perimeter of your yard.

•The dogs may be attracted to the kind of fertilizer you use in your flower and vegetable beds, so you may want to periodically change it up. Dogs can be attracted to both organic and chemical fertilizers.
•If you have lawn sprinklers, vary the time of the watering. Dogs don’t tend to go for wet areas when there are dry ones around.
•Also, be aware of keeping attractive areas, such as garbage cans or compost bins, as clean and tidy as possible.

Perimeter deterrents

There are numerous products on the market that come in the form of sprays, liquids, and granules. A popular product is called “Liquid Fence,” for example. Most products are non-toxic and biodegradable. Some have offensive odors to both dogs and people, while others have odors only offensive to dogs. You can also sprinkle chili powder or cayenne pepper around the edges of your yard. The catch is keeping up with consistent applications of whatever you are applying, such as after a rain.

There are “sonic” solutions that may work to keep dogs out of your yard. These machines may work, but they will also keep other critters such as birds out of your yard too.

Lastly, you can also go whole hog and put a fence around your yard. You will still need to regularly check the fence perimeter, as determined dogs will dig right under them.

Sophia was able to use the money to buy about $1,000 worth of pet food, toys, and treats with the help of coupons. All the animal gifts she acquired with the help of her mother, were donated to the Tampa Bay Humane Society. (Last year Sophia Biddle sold some of her toys online and raised $356 to purchase gifts for children who otherwise wouldn’t have had any.)

Some time after she heard about the Humane Society, she started raising money and making bookmarks to give to donors for the animals. She also had a fundraising booth at her school. Thank you notes were her last project for donors before she had finished the campaign.

The tough economic times have impacted animal shelters greatly. In Jupiter, FL an animal shelter was actually misreported in a news article to have closed due to financial difficulties. For Christmas it received a pickup truck load of pet food and other supplies due to a grant made by the John Tesh Foundation.

Some animal shelters are in desperate need because food donations have decreased drastically. Last February it was reported the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Los Angeles had experienced a ninety percent drop in food donations.

Another factor contributing to extra animals at shelters is the Christmas Pet Syndrome. Puppies and kittens purchased as Christmas gifts sometimes wind up at animal shelters when new owners realize they didn’t understand all the responsibilities, and don’t want to take care of them.

The main cause of pet overpopulation is lack of awareness about the importance of neutering and spaying pets so they don’t have large litters, which owners can’t care for and drop at shelters, or they go feral and may continue reproducing. The state of Florida offers a spay and neuter vehicle license plate which is supposed to help reduce pet overpopulation.

Perhaps next year, Sophia will lead a campaign to raise awareness about the value that spaying and neutering has in reducing the number of starving and homeless animals.

nowBuzz up!ODESSA - The stacks of pet food, treats and fleece blankets stood so tall they almost obscured the fireplace in 8-year-old Sophia Biddle's family room.

Forty-six bags of Meow Mix. Thirty-seven packages of Beggin' Strips. Twenty-one rope toys. Piles and piles of Pounce treats, Dentastix, bones and more toys.

Since October, Sophia has been raising money and going with her mother to buy items for homeless animals. She brought in $522.09 and purchased more than $1,000 worth of goodies, thanks to coupons and freebie offers.

A few days before Christmas, the Hammond Elementary third-grader and her family dropped off a vanload of donations at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.

The Humane Society benefits from a lot of donations and volunteers, said Executive Director Sherry Silk. But it was unusual to hear from someone so young, who saw a need and figured out how to meet it.

"Here's an 8-year-old little girl who has compassion for homeless animals," Silk said. "I think she's a very, very special young lady."

This is the second year Sophia has reached out to the community during the holiday season. Last December, she sold her old toys on eBay, raising $356 to buy toys, sneakers and clothes for needy children.

Her mother, Kimberlee Biddle, got Christmas lists from several children at the elementary school where she used to work. She and Sophia shopped for the gifts together, wrapped them with tags signed "Secret Santa" and delivered them to families.

Biddle didn't expect Sophia to come up with a new plan this year.

"It shocked me," she said. "I was very proud of her that she decided to do this. She's really been active in making it happen."

Biddle helped Sophia with the logistics of her fundraising and donations but said her daughter started both projects with no prompting from her parents.

Shy and soft-spoken, Sophia said she knew right away she wanted to do something nice for pets this year.

"I like animals," said Sophia, who has a dog, cat and three fish and wants to be a veterinarian.

Her mother told her what the Humane Society did, and Sophia worked out a way to make money. She created bookmarks with cat and dog silhouettes, and she and a friend gave them away to donors in her Odessa neighborhood. She also set up a booth at her school's carnival.

She wrote a plea to help "our furry friends who don't have homes," which she taped to a jar. Her father, Randy, took it with him to work at Graybar in Tampa. One client gave a $50 donation for the Humane Society.

The Humane Society told the Biddles the biggest needs for the shelter animals – soft bedding, dried and canned food and treats and toys. Kimberlee Biddle clipped coupons and watched stores for the best deals so they could get the most for their money.

Sophia said she felt good helping the animals. Although the project was a lot of work, the hardest part came at the end: Writing thank-you notes to each donor.

10 Ways to Show Animal Shelters the Love

This campaign was designed to acknowledge and promote the invaluable role shelters play in their communities and to increase public awareness of animal welfare issues and shelter services. Here are the top 10 ways that the HSUS suggests you can show your appreciation:

1. Donate a Subscription to Animal Sheltering Magazine.
Shelter workers appreciate Animal Sheltering–an award-winning bi-monthly magazine chock full of articles to educate, inform and inspire anyone who works or volunteers with homeless pets. Donate a year’s subscription to your local shelter for just $20.

2. Learn How to Help Injured or Abandoned Animals.
Your local shelter and animal control officers depend on the community’s help to reach animals in need. Learn everything you need to know to take action, from how to put together a first aid kit to which community phone numbers you need to know.

3. Be an E-mail Ambassador.
Spread a shelter-friendly message every time you hit send–attach a tagline like this one to your signature for all outgoing e-mail messages: Love animals? Support your local shelter!

4. Adopt or Foster an Animal.
Consider adopting or fostering a homeless animal. Whether you decide to bring home a new pet or foster an animal until she finds a forever family, you’ll be giving a critter a safe and caring home while making room for another homeless pet in your community’s animal shelter, where space is limited.

5. Say Thank You.
Drop a note in the mail or shoot an e-mail to your local shelter and let them know how much you appreciate all they do for animals. If you can, sweeten your thank you by adding an item from the shelter’s wish list, a check or a gift card from a pet supply store.

6. Volunteer Your Time and Skills.
Whether you end up walking pooches, helping at special events or lending your expertise as a newsletter editor, your shelter can match your schedule and talents to their needs. Not only will you be helping animals in your community, but you also will be building knowledge and skills. Call your local shelter and find out how to start volunteering.

7. Support Spay-Neuter.
Spaying or neutering your pet or offering to help fund a spay/neuter surgery for a friend, family member or neighbor’s pet will save animals’ lives by helping to lower the number of unwanted animals in your community and reduce the strain on your local shelter’s resources.

8. Donate a Dog Bed.
No shelter dog should have to sleep on a cold, concrete floor while waiting for a forever home, but providing bedding for the millions of homeless animals in our nation’s animal shelters can add up to thousands of dollars each year–not to mention loads of laundry. Help a dog in need by donating a durable, shelter-tested bed to a shelter of your choice through the Kuranda shelter donation program. The beds can increase the overall physical and mental well-being of a shelter’s doggie residents.

9. ID Your Pet.
Your pet should never go naked–that is, without a collar and ID tags. It’s the number one way that lost pets are returned to their owners. Without it a Good Samaritan or animal shelter will likely have no idea how to contact you. Even if your pet is microchipped or your cat never goes outdoors, always err on the safe side and make a collar and tag permanent–your pet’s life could depend on it.

10. Add a Banner to Your Web Page.
Post a banner to your MySpace profile, blog, or website to show your appreciation for your local shelter. Just copy and paste the code here into your page.

HOSPICE CARE AT HOME FOR OUR FURBABIES
On the advice of one of our members, I've started a group to compliment and enhance this cause. It has the above title and can be found on my wall. This group is for those of us who are experiencing the final days of our furbabies and have the desire to help them pass at home. It is for questions, advice, comments or simply, just pouring your heart out on these pages...so, it's for comfort as well. When I give advice, it will be from my personal experience with my Smudggie (RIP baby girl). You must remember that each furbabies "passing" is unique and will be experience differently. I will post links that helped me and welcome any other links or advice that is appropriate to these needs. Everyone here knows how strongly I feel about our furbabies ABSOLUTE RIGHT to die in their sanctuary where they have lived and loved. After Smudggie passed, I felt a strength and a comfort which goes beyond words. It is one of the most selfless things we can do for our babies...We reach a point where it is no longer about us...but about our furbabies.
Please join us and share your wisdom..concerns...prayers...questions and tears.

Crisp air and fresh snow can bring out the silly puppy in the most regal of Rovers. But ice and snow mixed with salt, sand, and chemical de-icers will ruin winter fun in short order. Dog boots (adorably referred to as “booties”) help protect a pooch’s paws from harsh winter weather, says Jim Sinning, DVM, a holistic veterinarian—and he ought to know, since he practices in snowy Minneapolis.

“Booties are great as long as they’re not too tight,” Sinning says. Most brands offer sizing charts to make sure you get a boot that will work whether you have a Bernese or a Bichon. We like Ultra Paws Rugged Dog Boots made from recycled tire materials and nylon.

If your dog can’t abide booties, Musher’s Secret, made with a blend of organic waxes, will protect your dog’s dogs from cracking, drying, salt burns, and collecting those painful between-the-pads ice balls. For paws irritated by winter weather, Sinning suggests applying calendula salve or aloe vera gel to soothe and using vitamin E ointment as a moisturizer for pads and between the toes.

To make your own dog booties, see this awesome DIY for “cool and cheap little dog sneakers or boots from duct tape” from Instructables.com.
