| Prayers and Blessings for Pets and Animals
Catholics and other Christians believe that praying is important, and that we should offer our intercessions on behalf of everyone, especially for those that we love. Thus, it makes sense to offer prayer for our pet companions that loyally give us love, and joy. These pet prayers and devotions are a great way to regularly think about, send out intentions for, and offer thanks for your dog, cat, and other pets and animals. These prayers also work for farm animals and even wild animals. In the Catholic tradition, animals play an important role; they are mentioned regularly in Scripture, and in tradition as well (see the life of St. Francis of Assisi for example). If you are interested in prayers for healing for humans check out our new healing prayers page
Prayer for a Pet - This is a prayer for any pet (cat, dog, etc) that reminds us that animals are a part of creation that God redeemed when he became flesh in Jesus Christ.
A Pet Blessing
Dearest God, Heavenly Father maker of all living creatures, we ask you to bless (name of pet), who brings so much joy into our lives. By the power of Your love, enable him (her) to live according to your plan. May we always praise You for all Your beauty in creation. who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, Blessed are You, God, in all Your creatures! Basilica and Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation.
Blessing of an Animal
Almighty and Generous Providence how great the variety of living things, You have put at our disposal! You told our first parents: "I give you all the animals of the land." Some can be used as food, or for labor or transportation, but also for our companionship and recreation.
Bless this animal.
May him / her carry out the function it has been given and may it aid us to think of You his / her Creator and give praise and thanks to You forever. We ask this in the name of Jesus our Lord.

| Blessing of Animals
As autumn arrives, people in various places may notice something odd.A procession of animals, everything from dogs and cats to hamsters and even horses, is led to churches for a special ceremony called the Blessing of Pets. This custom is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures.Francis, whose feast day is October 4th, loved the larks flying about his hilltop town. He and his early brothers, staying in a small hovel, allowed themselves to be displaced by a donkey.Francis wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God’s living things. “All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures.” And there was testimony in the cause for St. Clare of Assisi’s canonization that referred to her little cat!
That there are today over 62 million cats in the U.S. attests to the continuing affection we have for our furry, feathered or finned friends. We've even had a cat called Socks in the White House. Other popular presidential pets range from Abraham Lincoln’s Fido to Lyndon Johnson’s beagles, named Him and Her.For single householders, a pet can be a true companion. Many people arrive home from work to find a furry friend overjoyed at their return. Many a senior has a lap filled with a purring fellow creature. The bond between person and pet is like no other relationship, because the communication between fellow creatures is at its most basic. Eye-to-eye, a man and his dog, or a woman and her cat, are two creatures of love.
No wonder people enjoy the opportunity to take their animal companions to church for a special blessing. Church is the place where the bond of creation is celebrated. At Franciscan churches, a friar with brown robe and white cord often welcomes each animal with a special prayer. The Blessing of Pets usually goes like this:
“Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.”
As the prayer is offered, the pet is gently sprinkled with holy water. Believe it or not, most pets receive this sacramental spritz with dignity, though I must admit I have seen some cats flatten their ears a bit as the drops of water lightly pelt them.
But the owner is happy, and who knows what spiritual benefits may result?
Usually the Blessing of Pets is held outdoors. But I remember it rained one year, and all were invited inside St. Stephen’s Church in Manhattan. It was quite a sight to see pairs of creatures—one human, one animal—sitting in the pews. The pastor joined right in with his beagle. Noah’s Ark was never like this! Some people criticize the amount and cost of care given to pets. People are more important, they say. Care for poor people instead of poodles. And certainly our needy fellow humans should not be neglected. However, I believe every creature is important. The love we give to a pet, and receive from a pet, can draw us more deeply into the larger circle of life, into the wonder of our common relationship to our Creator.
Kevin E. Mackin, O.F.M., is a Franciscan of the Holy Name Province.

Prayer for saying goodbye to a dying pet
Saying Goodbye to a Dying Pet
In the name of God the Father, who created you and all the animals, in the name of Jesus the Son, who spoke of you in parables and stories, in the name of the Holy Spirit, in whom every creature lives, moves, and has their being, go now in peace, dear friend.
May you find rest near refreshing waters, may you lie in cool, green pastures, and may you warm yourself under the sun that never sets.
You have been my constant companion, my shadow and confidante, my comfort and playmate. You filled my days with life and brought me endless joy. For this I give thanks to God who gave you to me.
Now return to your Maker who eagerly waits for you as you waited for me at the end of each day.
In the Father’s arms, let there be no more pain. Let there be no more suffering. Let there be only light as it was on the day God created you.
For our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Blessed be the name of the Lord, now and forever. Amen.

| Blessing of Horses and other Draft Animals
The animals praise and glorify God inasmuch as they assist man and serve him. In their own way they assist man in attaining his ultimate goal, and for that reason the Church blesses them. In her blessing the church commends these animals to St. Anthony the hermit, who from the earliest times was regarded as the patron of farmers and animal breeders. The following prayers can be used when the animals are placed in harness for the first time. O God, our refuge and strength, the source of our devotion, hear the devout prayers of the Church, grant that what we ask in faith we may obtain in fact.
Almighty, eternal God, who didst test glorious Saint Anthony the hermit in many temptations and didst grant him to go forth untouched by the seductions of this world: grant us Thy servants to make progress in virtue by his example and to be freed from the dangers of this life by his merits and intercession.
May these animals, O Lord, receive Thy blessing; may they be sound in body and, by the intercession of Saint Anthony the hermit, may they be preserved from all evil. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

| A Prayer by Saint Francis of Assisi, for our Animal Friends
Heavenly Father, our human ties with our friends of other species is wonderful and special gift from You. We now ask You to grant our special animal companions your Fatherly care and healing power to take away any suffering they have. Give us, their human friends, new understanding of our responsibilities to these creatures of Yours. They have trust in us as we have in You; our souls and theirs are on this earth together to give one another friendship, affection, and caring. Take our heartfelt prayers and fill Your ill or suffering animals with healing Light and strength to overcome whatever weakness of body they have.
(Here mention the names of the animals needing prayer).
Your goodness is turned upon every living thing and Your grace flows to all Your creatures. From our souls to theirs goodness flows, touching each of us with the reflection of Your love. Grant to our special animal companions long and healthy lives. Give them good relationships with us, and if You see fit to take them from us, help us to understand that they are not gone from us, but only drawing closer to You. Grant our prayer through the intercession of good St. Francis of Assisi, who honored You through all Your creatures. Give him the power to watch over our animal friends until they are safely with You in eternity, where we someday hope to join them in giving You honor forever. Amen.
(You can make this a Novena for a sick pet, by praying this prayer for 9 consecutive days)

| Prayers
These are prayers for animals from the Christian and Catholic tradition.
From Albert Schweitzer
Dear God, protect and bless all beings that breathe, keep all evil from them, and let them sleep in peace. Amen.
From a Catholic Prayer Book
Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends, the animals, especially for those who are suffering; for animals that are overworked, underfed, and cruelly treated; for all the wistful creatures in captivity, that beat their wings against bars; for any that are hunted or lost or deserted, or frightened or hungry; for all that must be put to death. We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity, and for those who deal with them, we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words. Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals and so to share the blessings of the Merciful.
Prayer for the Blessing of Pets
[at Franciscan churches, a friar often welcomes each animal with a special prayer]
Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. Amen.
Prayer for the Blessing of Animals
[from the Monks of New Skete Monastery, Eastern Orthodox in the USA]
Psalm 150 Alleluia! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him for his vast, unshaking strength. Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him for all his grandeur. Let everything that breathes praise the Lord! (vs. 1,2,& 3) Let us pray to the Lord. O our master, Lord and God, in ancient times you blessed the flocks of the patriarch Jacob, and when you took flesh and entered this world as a small and vulnerable infant, you were sheltered in the manger with these very creatures of yours. O loving Saviour, after you taught us how to pray to your heavenly father, you used the birds of the air as a reminder of his all embracing providence, for everything that breathes is the work of your hands and acknowledges, each in its own way, the presence of your all holy and life-giving Spirit. As we gather together this day to ask you to bless these various animals, let us see in them the goodness and beauty with which you endow all your creatures. By the example of our venerable fathers Paul and Anthony of the desert, Francis of Assisi, Seraphim of Sarov and Sergius of Radonezh, teach us never to abuse them or to take them for granted, rather let them open our hearts to your divine love so that, together with every living being, we may all sing your praises, Father, Son and Holy Spirit; now and forever, and unto ages of ages. All: Amen.

| Christian Prayers for Animals
"Cruelty to animals is as if humans did not love God". -Cardinal John Henry Newman
Extracted from "An Animal Blessing Service", The Anglican Society For The Welfare of Animals
An act of penitence:
Almighty God and Father of all, You have chosen mankind for a position of special responsibility; we have failed to respond in awe at Your wonders; we have misinterpreted our role of Dominion too often as one of ruthless exploitation rather than one of loving care; we have treated the animal kingdom with an inhumanity incompatible with that which Jesus came to teach us; forgive us, Lord, as we seek anew the vision which You set before us, and as we strive to respond to Your call; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.
Absolution:
May Almight God, Father Son and Holy Spirit, help you find His forgiveness, and the strength and grace to respond in spreading His love to all His creation.

A Prayer of Albert Schweitzer. O Thou, who bearest the pain of the weakest and lowliest of creatures, touch our hearts to hear their pain, to hear the voice of these voiceless ones, to hear them and heed them... God, give us the strength to find in our hearts the ways we can best help those humble creatures who have only us to rely on, and who cannot speak for themselves. Give us the courage to move undaunted, despite criticism and indifference, to relieve their suffering;...

Another Prayer of Albert Schweitzer.
Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends the animals, especially for animals who are suffering; for any who are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry; for all that must be put to sleep. We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity, and for those who deal with them we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words. Make us be true friends to animals and so to share the blessing of the merciful.

yes, one thing is when the animals are treated humanely and if some animals are slaughtered for food then this to be done in painless way to them, while another thing is if they are rough exploited and afflicted - my vote (not a slander) before the true God and Jesus is there be no more afflicted souls and there be enough overall respect for the animals

| 28th April Is it appropriate to pray for pets who are sick? Categories: prayer, Christian living | 2008 | by Ken Horn | 20 comments God cares about every portion of your life … the big things and the small. Lots of Christians admit to praying for a parking place at the mall. The needs of a living creature are certainly more important than that.
It has been clearly demonstrated that pets can have significant health benefits for people. That’s one of the reasons therapy dogs and therapy cats are in use today for institutionalized or shut-in patients. Recent studies indicate that people with pets live longer, healthier lives. They can be a very good thing for some people.
And the Bible is clear that God values even animal life, which are a part of His creation.P8290014There seems to be a glimpse of this in Jonah 4:11 (NIV): “But Nineveh has more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well. Should I not be concerned about that great city?”
It is more pronounced in the New Testament. In Luke 12, Jesus addresses the eternal value of a soul, as well as the value of small things. Verses 6 and 7 say, “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”
Children can learn compassion and kindness by watching how adults treat animals.
Yes, it is appropriate to pray for sick or injured pets, as well as for other small areas of our lives … but Christians should pray far more about things of eternal value. We just need to keep things in perspective.
Ken Horn
Some other scriptures about animals:
Exodus 20:8-10 Even work animals deserve a rest.
Deuteronomy 22:10 Don’t mismatch work animals. It would cause undue suffering for mismatched animals to be yoked together. (There’s a human application to this as well.)
Proverbs 12:10 People are expected to be kind to animals.

| Prayer for Animals and Their Masters
Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends, the animals, especially for those who are suffering; for animals that are overworked, underfed, and cruelly treated; for all the wistful creatures in captivity, that beat their wings against bars; for any that are hunted or lost or deserted, or frightened or hungry; for all that must be put to death.
We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity, and for those who deal with them, we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words. Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals and so to share the blessings of the Merciful.

| About ChurchYear.Net
In the course of a year, the Church celebrates the unfolding of the mystery of Christ, beginning with Advent, anticipating his first coming, and reaching a high point at Easter, the feast of feasts, celebrating Christ's resurrection. Through the Church Year, which includes the seasonal, daily, and yearly cycles of Christian time, we commemorate, and participate in, events in the lives of Jesus and his followers, through sanctified time. Thus, we experience in symbol what Jesus and his followers did in reality. We do this through daily prayer (The Liturgy of the Hours), worship, the Eucharist, the sacraments, art, changing colors, canticles, psalms, antiphons, symbols, and other means.
The Church Year, including all liturgical celebrations and times of prayer, is one of the most meaningful dimensions of the Catholic faith. Many Christians of all traditions feel drawn to this system of holy time, and prefer to orient their lives around the Christian calendar instead of the secular calendar. Postmodern men and women feel especially drawn to many elements of Sanctified Time: mystery, connection to the past, and a multitude of religious symbols and experiential elements. Thus the Church Year is a postmodern Catholic evangelism tool, and a means of spiritual growth for all who use it.
We now have All About... pages for every season of the Church Year, and have many All About... pages for various feasts, fasts, and holy days of the Church Year. Each All About... page has a history, general facts, scriptural references, traditions, symbols, links, worship resources, sermons, an FAQ, and more material related to the particular season or holy day. We also have a helpful Church Year and Liturgy Dictionary, to define certain unfamiliar terms and practices. We are expanding our resources to include general prayers, language resources, and other tools peripherally related to celebrating the Church Year, but still important to its celebration. Enjoy!
If you have any suggestions or information you would like to add to our Church Year. Net pages, please contact us.

| Prayer of Saint Francis for Animals
God Our Heavenly Father, You created the world to serve humanity's needs and to lead them to You. By our own fault we have lost the beautiful relationship which we once had with all your creation. Help us to see that by restoring our relationship with You we will also restore it with all Your creation. Give us the grace to see all animals as gifts from You and to treat them with respect for they are Your creation.

| Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless these pets. By the power of your love, enable them to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen. | |

| From St Basil the Great
O God, enlarge within us the sense of fellowship with all living things, for our brothers and sisters, the inarticulate beasts, to whom Thou gave the earth as their home in common with us. We remember with shame that in the past we have exercised the high dominion of humanity with ruthless cruelty so that the voice of the earth, which should have gone up to thee in song has become a groan of anguish and a cry of torment. May we realize that they live not for us alone, but for themselves and for Thee, and that they too love the sweetness of life. Amen.
From St Isaac the Syrian (or, of Nineveh)
What is a charitable heart? It is a heart which is burning with charity for the whole of creation, for men, for the birds, for the beasts, for the demons—for all creatures. He who has such a heart cannot see or call to mind a creature without his eyes becoming filled with tears by reason of the immense compassion which seizes his heart; a heart which is softened and can no longer bear to see or learn from others of any suffering, even the smallest pain, being inflicted upon a creature. This is why such a man never ceases to pray also for the animals, for the enemies of Truth, and for those who do him evil, that they may be preserved and purified. He will pray even for the reptiles, moved by the infinite pity which reigns in the hearts of those who are becoming united to God. All: Lord, give me and all the world a heart such as this. Amen.
