https://support.petalatino.com/page/2103/petition/1 In factory farms, thousands of animals are crowded, confined, mistreated, and slaughtered. These systems are extremely cruel. Factory farms strive to maximize production and minimize costs— and animals are the ones who always pay. Do you think it’s OK for factory farms to mistreat millions of animals? Dare to look. Dare to change. Live vegan! Sign the application found below. By signing my name, I pledge to try a vegan diet for at least 30 days

PETA reveals extreme cruelty at kosher slaughterhouses

Kosher slaughter is intended to minimize animals’ suffering. But undercover PETA investigations have revealed that Agriprocessors, the world’s largest glatt kosher slaughterhouse, has been ignoring both the Jewish commitment to compassion and federal law—and animals endure prolonged suffering and nightmarish deaths as a result.

What happens in kosher slaughter

All slaughter is terrifying for the animals and involves pain and suffering, but kosher slaughter, when performed according to Halacha (Jewish law), is intended to minimize animals’ suffering. Kosher slaughter, or shechita, is performed by a person known as a shochet, who has received special education and instruction in the requirements of shechita. The shochet kills the animal with a quick, deep stroke across the throat with a sharp knife. When performed properly, shechita appears all but painless and quickly renders the animal unconscious. When PETA received complaints that this wasn’t the case at Agriprocessors—a massive Iowa slaughterhouse that produces Rubashkin’s, Aaron’s Best, and Iowa’s Best meats—and that both kosher law and federal law were being violated, we took action.

A History of Abuse

PETA wrote to company officials and asked them to take steps to make certain that cruelty was not occurring. Agriprocessors’ attorney, Nathan Lewin, wrote back to us, claiming that “neither Jewish law or ‘common decency’ is being violated in the Agriprocessors plant.” The tone of this letter was not convincing, so we sent an undercover investigator to see for ourselves.

Summer 2004

PETA’s first investigation at Agriprocessors in 2004 revealed almost 300 instances of inhumane slaughter, in which cows’ sensitive faces were shocked with electric prods, fully conscious cattle had their tracheas and esophagi ripped from their throats with meat hooks or knives, and they writhed in pools of their own blood, trying desperately to stand up for up to three minutes as blood poured from their throats. Read our investigator’s notes. Rabbis, scholars, animal welfare experts, and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspectors have all spoken out about the extreme cruelty that our undercover investigator was able to capture on tape. The world’s foremost expert on slaughter methods, Dr. Temple Grandin, told Mason City, Iowa’s Globe Gazette, “I thought it was the most disgusting thing I’d ever seen. I couldn’t believe it. I’ve been in at least 30 other kosher slaughter plants, and I had never ever seen that kind of procedure done before. … I’ve seen kosher slaughter really done right, so the problem here is not kosher slaughter. The problem here is a plant that is doing everything wrong they can do wrong.” The USDA told the plant to immediately stop this procedure and determined that Agriprocessors employees “had engaged in acts of inhumane slaughter.” The Orthodox Union (OU), the agency that certifies Agriprocessors’ products as kosher, also told Agriprocessors to stop removing the cows’ tracheas and to stun any animals who remained conscious after throat-slitting.

May 2007

In light of the cruel conduct at Agriprocessors, PETA also investigated Local Pride, a slaughterhouse in Gordon, Nebraska, that was owned by the Rubashkins (the owners of Agriprocessors) in May 2007. We found that cows were still allowed to remain conscious and in extreme pain for up to two minutes after their throats were slit. Experts in animal welfare, veterinary medicine, and slaughter systems reviewed the disturbing footage recorded inside the slaughterhouse and noted the following:

Cows remained conscious for as long as two minutes after their throats were cut open.
A worker ripped into conscious cows’ throats with a metal node hook in order to make the bleeding process go faster. Cows were handled improperly, resulting in fear and stress just prior to slaughter. Workers removed identification tags by mutilating live cows’ ears.
PETA’s footage led several experts to condemn the company’s practices. Dr. Holly Cheever, a large-animal veterinarian, stated, “This method of slaughter as depicted on this tape is brutal and should be amended to provide a humane end for these animals.” The USDA inspected Local Pride, and management agreed to stop using the node hook on conscious cows.

August 2008

PETA returned to Agriprocessors in Postville, Iowa, in August 2008 and caught workers continuing to make “second cuts” (hacking holes in the open wounds in cows’ necks after the shochet had already cut their throats). Dr. Temple Grandin has stated that these gouging, circular cuts cause the cows pain and suffering. Just two weeks prior to PETA’s August 2008 undercover investigation, Agriprocessors gave a private tour to selected rabbis, community leaders, and reporters, and video footage from that tour shows slaughter done without a second cut at all. When Dr. Grandin inspected the facility in 2006, the plant showed her slaughter that did not include a second cut at all, and she gave them her approval. It appears that Agriprocessors wanted consumers to believe that the plant had stopped the second cut, but PETA’s new investigation revealed that, behind closed doors, not much had changed. The USDA again cited Agriprocessors for violating the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act.

In light of this new video exposing the gouging second cuts—and Agriprocessors’ quite different conduct during the tour—Dr. Grandin made a new assessment of Agriprocessors, stating, “The undercover video clearly showed that when they think nobody is looking, they do bad things in this plant.” Dr. Grandin asserted that the plant should install a live video monitor to be reviewed by a third party auditor to prevent further cruelty.

Workers Suffer Too

Cows aren’t the only ones who are being abused by Agriprocessors. The people who work there are often treated like machines, too, and denied health care. The Jewish newspaper The Forward published an article detailing the horrors of working conditions at the Agriprocessors slaughterhouse, including virtually no safety training, severe injuries that required amputations, frequent verbal harassment, and very low wages. OSHA cited Agriprocessors for 39 worker safety violations in March 2008. After a May 2008 federal raid of the plant over immigration violations, 76 percent of the 968 Agriprocessors employees were found to be using false or fraudulent Social Security numbers that were allegedly supplied by plant management. Agriprocessors also pleaded guilty to 83 counts of child-labor violations.

Update:

Agriprocessors declared bankruptcy and former owner Sholom Rubashkin was sentenced to 27 years in federal prison for financial fraud. The plant is now under new ownership and operates as Agri Star.

22 heartbreaking photos from pigs’ Journey to Slaughter

No matter how pigs raised for food live on this Earth, in the end, most will be loaded onto a crowded truck—with hardly any protection from the elements and without any food, water, or place to go to the bathroom—and sent to the slaughterhouse. These pictures tell a story that will break your heart: Most people have seen a livestock transport truck carrying animals on their way to slaughter.

pictures that sum up ‘ humane meat ’

Whole Foods and other image-conscious retailers do a lot of talking about so-called “humane meat.” Whole Foods even has various levels of “humaneness” that farms can achieve by promising that their operations meet certain criteria. So how humane is “humane meat”? Take a look at these 17 photographs, taken on “humane,” “free-range,” “small-scale,” “organic,” “family-operated,” and similarly pleasant-sounding farms—and decide for yourself. A PETA eyewitness spent more than two months working at a Pennsylvania pig farm that supplied Whole Foods’ “humanely raised” pork. Sweet Stem Farm is certified as a “Step 2” farm on Whole Foods’ five-step scale, which means that conditions there should be better than at most of the chain’s pig suppliers, which are only certified as “Step 1.” But our eyewitness found that the animals spent almost all their time crammed into tightly packed sheds on concrete floors. Sick and injured pigs suffered for days and even weeks without care. If a veterinarian ever treated them, the eyewitness never saw it during more than two months of working full-time at the farm. In just one example, seven pigs with large rectal prolapses were left to suffer for up to 24 days.

pigs with bleeding rectal prolapses, whole foods humane farm, sweet stem farm, humane meat
The eyewitness also documented that countless pigs who had been given antibiotics were sent to a slaughterhouse that supplied Whole Foods, even though the company claims, “Our Meat: No Antibiotics, Ever.” Photographer Jo-Anne McArthur has spent her life documenting animals, including those who live on farms that make lofty claims regarding their operations. She captured this image on a “free-range, organic, family-run” chicken farm. Not exactly the bucolic, rolling, green hills that the drawings on meat labels normally depict. This egg farm features “enriched” caging for its hens. Hens, like this one, can die when they become entangled in wire cages. These chickens on a “free-range” farm are trying to shove themselves through a wire fence to escape from a farm worker. We can only imagine what they fear is about to happen to them. At an “organic, family-run” dairy farm, farmers yank a calf out of his laboring mother’s birth canal with ropes. They’ll separate the two soon after the birth so that the baby won’t drink the milk that his mother produced for him.

Newborn calves lie alone in isolated crates. The farm sells many of them for veal. Mother cows stand in filth with hooves so overgrown that they can barely walk. But they don’t need to walk here: There is nowhere for them to go. Sick, alone, and covered with flies, a calf dies outside his crate. Cows are held in place with restraints and artificially inseminated, and then the process starts again. This is where “organic, family farm” milk comes from. As shoppers become more aware of the cruelty inherent in animal agriculture, meat companies are changing—their labels, that is. They think that with a few reassuring words and a pretty picture of a farm, the American consumer can be easily fooled into believing that no animals were harmed in the production of the flesh and body fluids beneath the plastic. But we know better. We know that exploiting and killing animals to eat their body parts can never be humane. The only truly humane meal is a vegan one.

Are humans supposed to eat meat?

People who eat meat argue that it’s “natural” for humans to consume animals. But is this true or just an excuse to ignore the horrific ways in which animals are killed for food? Are we really supposed to eat meat?

We don’t like blood

Pig at slaughterhouse after pig wrestling event

Most humans are revolted by the sight of blood, intestines, and raw flesh and can’t tolerate hearing the screams of animals being ripped apart. The bloody reality of killing and eating animals is innately repulsive to us.

We don’t have carnivorous teeth

Humans have short, soft fingernails and small, dull canine teeth. All true carnivores have sharp claws and large canine teeth that are capable of tearing flesh without the help of knives and forks. Real carnivores’ jaws move only up and down, enabling them to tear chunks of flesh from their prey. Humans can move their jaws up and down and from side to side, and we also have flat molars (which carnivores lack), allowing us to grind up fruit and vegetables with our back teeth like herbivores do.

lion roar carnivore teeth

Dr. Richard Leakey, a renowned anthropologist, says, “You can’t tear flesh by hand, you can’t tear hide by hand. Our anterior teeth are not suited for tearing flesh or hide. We don’t … have large canine teeth, and we wouldn’t have been able to deal with food sources that required those large canines.”

Our digestive system doesn’t like meat

Carnivores have short intestinal tracts that allow meat to pass quickly through their digestive system. Humans’ intestinal tracts are much longer, like those of plant-eaters. This gives the body more time to break down fiber and absorb the nutrients from plant-based foods.

Meat cause food poisoning in humans

True carnivores gulp down chunks of raw flesh, relying on their strong stomach acids to break it down and kill the dangerous bacteria in meat that would otherwise sicken or kill them. Humans have much weaker stomach acids that are similar to those found in animals who digest pre-chewed fruits and vegetables. Without carnivorous stomach acids to kill the bacteria in meat, dining on animal flesh can give us food poisoning. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, meat is a significant cause of foodborne illness. Every year in the U.S. alone, food poisoning sickens more than 48 million people and kills more than 3,000. Because of this, we must cook meat to make it easier to digest and to destroy bacteria, but there may be a link between cooking meat at high temperatures and the development of colon cancer.

Meat causes heart disease in humans

Carnivorous animals in the wild virtually NEVER develop heart disease or suffer from strokes—ailments that humans can suffer an increased risk of developing due to their consumption of the saturated fat and cholesterol found in meat. Heart disease is the number one killer in the U.S., according to the American Heart Association. If humans were meant to eat meat, why do meat-eaters have a 32 percent higher risk of developing heart disease than vegetarians?

We are getting too much protein

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most Americans get plenty of protein without paying special attention to what they eat. We’re actually more likely to consume too much protein, resulting in nutritional deficiencies or insufficient fiber.

protein consumption graph

Eating too much protein may also increase your risk of developing heart disease and may worsen kidney function in people with kidney disease because the body can have trouble eliminating all the waste products of protein metabolism.

T. Colin Campbell—director of the Cornell-China-Oxford Project on Nutrition, Health, and Environment and author of The China Study —says, “In the next ten years, one of the things you’re bound to hear is that animal protein is one of the most toxic nutrients of all that can be considered.”

Didn’t our human ancestors eat animals ?

During most of our evolutionary history, we were largely vegetarian: Plant foods, such as yams, made up the bulk of our ancestors’ diet. The addition of modest amounts of meat to the early human diet came with the discovery of fire, which allowed us to lower the risk of being sickened or killed by parasites and bacteria in meat. This didn’t turn our ancestors into carnivores but rather allowed early humans to survive in areas and during periods in which plant foods were unavailable or scarce.

Modern meat consumption

Until fairly recently, only the wealthiest people could afford to feed, raise, and slaughter animals for meat, but with the rise of the modern middle class, consumption of meat in the U.S. has almost doubled over the last 100 years.

A mother pig in a gestation crate on a factory farm

Now, animal flesh is relatively cheap and easily available because of factory farming and government subsidies, and heart disease, strokes, cancer, and obesity are increasing worldwide.

Are humans supposed to eat animls ?

Numerous studies have shown that meat is not ideal for the human body and may actually be making us sick and killing us. The human body is intended to function on plant-based foods that are full of fiber, antioxidants, unsaturated fat, essential fatty acids, phytochemicals, and cholesterol-free protein. Animals are friends, not food: why you should go vegan

Veganism- giving a voice to the voiceless.

Going vegan has a prevalent negative misconception and should be incorporated into everyone’s lives because of the factory farm industry’s cruelty toward animals, the contamination within meat and animal products, as well as the long term effects veganism has on your health. The daily routines within our industry’s factory farms is not common knowledge; the cruel punishment it implements on its animals before even going to the slaughterhouse is unjust. “Modern/ factory farming practices involve substantial pain and/or suffering”. My grandmother owns a farm, so at a very young age, I experienced first hand the slaughtering of pigs, chickens, and cows. It was traumatizing and I swore to myself that I would become an animal rights activist. The animals I saw killed were given no mercy and treated gruesomely. I even saw a tear rolling down a cow’s eye as she was being taken away. Meat and animal product eaters today do not realize that when an animal such as a cow is taken to a factory farm, they physically forced to reproduce in order to continually produce milk while living in unsanitary, overcrowded environments.

WHY ARE YOU VEGAN?

These animals are kept alive in these circumstances by the injection of drugs, steroids and antibiotics. By these drugs and modern day technology, farmers make it possible for the animals to undergo severe pain while still not harming the product they are producing. The start of factory farming was used to keep prices of products low; however, in order to do so, the proper treatment of the animals was compromised. The quality of life within a factory farm for a chicken includes living in a space unable to move, beak cut or burned off, trapped indoors, and feeling joint point. Is this the way we would treat our dogs or cats at home? Our modern meat and dairy industry is not the only thing that is unhealthy about this; the meat and dairy products that we actually consume is actually contaminated with harmful ingredients as well.

Animal products and meat are contaminated with harmful bacteria and ingredients. The majority of these products are filled with toxins, hormones, and dioxins. According to Personal Liberty, a component called Staphylococcus aureus is found within most meat at a grocery store and is filled illness provoking bacteria that rejects at least three types of antibiotics. The government also does not screen for this type of “drug- resistant bacteria”. If our produce is contaminated with dangerous bacteria, one would think that consumers would not support it; but they do. By eating this product, it leaves doctors “with few options options for treatment if a human becomes infected.” With dangerous effects, the only true way of avoiding them, is by going completely vegan and animal product free. To a vegan diet, there are many health benefits as well as being an animal rights activist.

Becoming a vegan is often due to the opposition to the poor treatment of animals, but it is also has incredible long-term health benefits to it. Medical News Today refers to it as more of a philosophy rather than a diet. They say that eating animal fats and proteins leads the consumer to a greater risk of developing cancer, arthritis, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and many other fatal illnesses. It is even possible to stop or reverse a fatal illness through this drastic lifestyle change. After all, just like a mother breastfeeding, a cow's milk was designed to feed a baby calf, not a human. “Plant-based diets either minimize or completely eliminate people's genetic propensity to developing chronic diseases, such as diabetes type 2, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.” When eating vegan, you are limited to your choices a bit. In order to get the proper proteins, you eat alternatives to meat such as spinach, flax seeds, beans, lentils, vegetables and other healthy choices that you were most likely not getting enough of as a meat eater. Why eat something that you know is not benefiting your body? Going vegan is one of the absolute best ways to take a stand against animal cruelty and support the humane treatment of living creatures.

Veganism is a great, yet negative, misconception. By eliminating consumption of animal products from your lifestyle, you are standing against factory farming and their cruel treatment of animals, not consuming harmful bacteria filled produce, and receiving the many benefits that going vegan has on your health. With this being said, can you see yourself going vegan?

5 Reasons Why We Shouldn’t Slaughter Animals for Food

Support OneGreenPlanetBeing publicly-funded gives us a greater chance to continue providing you with high quality content. Please support us! Each year more than 58 billion farm animals and countless aquatic animals are unnecessarily killed for human consumption. Eating animals has largely been justified on the grounds of human health, but thankfully these myths have now been discredited with many mainstream healthcare professionals claiming animal products actually do us more harm than good. However, health is not the only reason to stop slaughtering animals for food. The animals that we exploit to put food on our tables are forced to bear the brunt of our eating habits every single day in factory farms and smallholdings, as we take away from them everything that is rightfully theirs denying them of a life filled with any other purpose other than one which serves to meet our own personal end. To take a line from Edgar’s Mission, one of my all time favorite farm animal sanctuaries, “If we could live happy and healthy lives without harming others…why wouldn’t we?”

1. We don’t need to eat animals to survive

Unlike many other animals who kill for their food, humans can survive on a completely plant based diet. We’re not living in the dark ages anymore. Our understanding has evolved and in the process we have come to learn that eating animals is no longer the necessity we once believed it to be. Research has proven that plants contain all the vitamins and nutrients that the human body needs to thrive.

2. We are creating emotional pain and suffering for the animals

The animals we slaughter for food are extremely intelligent and sensitive creatures, and the way in which we treat them, regardless of whether the meat is factory farmed, free range or organic, is abhorrently cruel. From stealing their babies from them at birth to keeping them locked in confinement and denying them their natural behaviors, our actions cause animals immense emotional pain and suffering.

3. Animal agriculture is an environmentally destructive industry

Whether it’s air pollution, water pollution, land degradation, or a negative effect on biodiversity, there is no getting around the fact that animal agriculture is an environmentally destructive industry. The livestock sector is responsible for 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, and 64 percent of anthroprogeneic ammonia emissions, which acidify ecosystems and cause untold damage to natural habitats. If that’s not bad enough, an estimated eight percent of global human water consumption is used for irrigation of livestock food crops, a staggering amount of freshwater resources have become polluted from animal waste, and reports of up to 70 percent of the cleared Amazonian forest is being used for animal agriculture purposes.

4. We are blindly following tradition

We find it so difficult to overcome traditional ideas and ways of thinking, that we very rarely stop to question the fundamental ethics and underlying morality of slaughtering animals for food. Just because something has been done a certain way for thousands of years, doesn’t make it automatically right. A perfect example of this is the fact that when born into the American culture, you are taught to believe that certain animals are for eating, others are companion animals, and others are wild animals. The idea of eating a dog is repulsive, yet in other parts of the world is perfectly normal.

5. There are so many alternatives available

With so many vegan alternatives for just about anything you can possibly think of, there are no excuses to continue slaughtering animals for food. Contrary to popular belief, veganism is not about deprivation. From “faux meats” for people craving their favorite traditional meals to vegetable sausages, burgers, pates, mince, jerky, and everything in between, transitioning to a plant-based diet is easier than ever before. Would you eat a chicken sandwich if you had to slaughter the chicken yourself ?

Animals are not ours to eat

Farmed animals have feelings, thoughts and personalities, just as we do, yet the livestock industry treats them like machines, with cruelty that’s hard to swallow. Humans don’t need to eat animals to live – in fact, we’re healthier if we don’t! Time and time again, it’s been demonstrated that a plant-based diet is better for us and for the environment – and for our consciences. Learn more about the suffering of animals raised for food and why going vegan is the only compassionate choice.

Ethics of eating animals

In any discussion concerning the ethics of eating animals, it’s important to begin by considering a frequently overlooked distinction: that harming and killing animals from necessity is not morally equivalent to harming and killing animals for pleasure. Just as shooting someone in self-defense is not commensurate with shooting someone to satisfy a sadistic urge— killing animals for food when we have no other choice for survival is not morally equivalent to killing animals when we have plentiful alternatives. Violence committed to save a life is never analogous to violence committed for pleasure or profit. This distinction is crucial for several reasons, the first of which is that it clarifies a serious category error in the thinking of people who insist that meat-eating is “natural”—and therefore morally neutral— because other animals eat animals. It’s important to realize that, with a few exceptions, when humans kill other animals for food, we’re not doing what animals do in nature. Humans have no biological or nutritional need to consume meat or any animal products. When animals kill other animals for food, they do as they must, in order to survive; they have no choice in the matter. Many humans, on the other hand, do have a choice, and when people with access to non-animal food options choose to consume animals anyway– because they can, or because they like the taste– they are not killing from necessity, as animals (and some humans in crisis or subsistence situations) do. Whether we’re talking about a lion taking down a water buffalo, or a human in some remote or impoverished location forced to hunt in order to feed her family: these are acts of necessity, and do not equate to, nor justify, wholly unnecessary harm to animals. There is no analogy to be found in nature for the massive harm we inflict on animals merely for pleasure.

Another reason it’s important to recognize the necessity/pleasure distinction is that harming animals for pleasure goes against core values most of us hold in common—which is why, for example, millions of us were outraged over Michael Vick’s involvement in dog fighting, and why we oppose dog fighting on principle. The notion of deriving pleasure from violence toward animals is repulsive to us; so how can we justify harming animals for the taste of their flesh? How can it be wrong to harm for pleasure in one instance, and not the other? The same reasons that compel us to oppose dog fighting compel us to abstain from killing animals we don’t need to eat: namely, that it is wrong to harm animals for pleasure, and it is wrong to kill animals for pleasure.

Finally, to harm animals for pleasure is also, ultimately, to harm ourselves. Constantly acting in opposition to our own core values deforms our hearts—and it diminishes our integrity, and hinders our emotional and moral growth. Day after day, and year after year, our lives can be seen as the culmination of thousands of instances in which, equally assured of nourishment and pleasure, we had the opportunity to choose kindness and mercy, or to choose violence and selfishness. What can it mean for caring people to regularly reject compassionate choices that cost them next to nothing, and to instead embrace unnecessary violence that costs its victims, literally, everything? To do so is to destroy kindness in our hearts. It’s a simple equation. Every time we put food in our mouths, we reinforce a value. When we choose, over and over, to activate apathy and selfishness in ourselves, we become different people than the people we would have become had we chosen instead to cultivate compassion and mercy.

14 Steps That Will Evolve Your Views on Eating Animals

Still not sure about the whole “not eating animals” thing? Then read on !

Step 1: Realize That You’ve Been Played by the Meat Industry

This chart compares the meat industry’s advertising expenses (yes, just its advertising expenses) to the total expenses of organizations that promote vegetarian eating and/or meat-industry reform:

CountingAnimals.com

Step 2: Try to Imagine How Many Animals Are Killed for Food Each Year

In just the U.S. alone:

Land animals (mostly chickens) killed for food: 8 billion
Marine animals (fish and shellfish) killed for food: 100 billion
That’s 108 billion animals. Can you even comprehend that? No, you can’t.

Step 3: Realize That Vegan Eating Is Inevitable

Commander William T. Riker explains that humans in the 24th century eat synthetic meat and “no longer enslave animals for food purposes.” Yeah, that’s Star Trek, but do you really think that we can’t come up with a way to feed ourselves that’s less harmful to animals, the planet, our own health?

Step 4: Stop Wondering Where Vegans and Vegetarians Get Their Protein

Step 5: Read the Nutritional Labels on Food

Meat isn’t good for you—meat alternatives such as those made by Gardein and Boca are way healthier.

Step 7: Let go of the idea that vegetarians are all huge, muscular german dudes

Step 8: Look inside a dog’s mouth

Your “canine” teeth and his are not the same. And there’s a good reason for that: Dogs evolved their teeth for tearing raw flesh and crunching bones. Ours evolved for chewing and breaking down plant material.

Step 9: Meet loreen dinwiddie

Loreen Dinwiddie, likely the oldest person in the state of Oregon at the age of 109, credits her vegan diet with giving her a long life.

“It’s all there in the Bible,” she says.

Step 10: Look at how happy these rescued animals are

“Forgiveness was rescued from a veal crate after being too sick to stand. After months of high temperatures and racking coughs he survived. He has sweet, sad eyes that melt your heart and bring tears to your eyes.” —The Gentle Barn

“Bella spent her whole life in a cage but now she loves the barnyard. She has so much to explore and learn about and so much lost time to make up for. She is making friends, learning how the sun feels on her back, rolling in sand for the first time and enjoying her freedom. She is not scared of us anymore and has much to be thankful for!” —The Gentle Barn

“Biscuit, shown here with his peeps, was found at a pumpkin patch; a favorite attraction for the kids. This little piglet rolled over for tummy rubs, took food gently out of their hands and had the patience of an angel. When, to our horror we found out that the plan was to slaughter him the day after Halloween, we brought him home to the barn instead. He now delights visitors with his 1,000 pounds of pure love.” —The Gentle Barn

Step 11: Look at the Consequences

Step 12: Watch This Video and Try Not to Cry

Step 13: Learn About Chick Culling

“Chick culling is the culling of newly hatched male chickens for which breeders have no use. In an industrial egg-producing facility, about half of the newly hatched chicks will be male and would grow up to be roosters, which do not lay eggs and therefore provide no incentive for the breeder to preserve. Most of the male chicks are usually killed shortly after hatching.” —Wikipedia

Mercy for Animals

Every year, more than 100 million unwanted male chicks are ground up alive or tossed into plastic bags to suffocate.

Step 14: Stop Telling Yourself That There’s a Difference Between the Animals in Your Home and the Animals on Your Plate

Sadie (the dog) gives Roxanne (the pig) a smooch! Kevin spoons with his feline sibling Delilah. Congratulations! You’ve evolved! You’ve made this pig very happy! Or maybe it’s just the vegan chocolate cake.
