| The Turkey Industry
Every year in the United States, about 245 million turkeys are killed for their flesh. Virtually all spend their entire lives on factory farms and have no federal legal protection. Turkeys raised on factory farms are hatched in large incubators and never see their mothers or feel the warmth of a nest. When they’re only a few weeks old, they’re moved into filthy, windowless sheds with thousands of other turkeys, where they’ll spend the rest of their lives. To keep the birds from killing one another in such stressful, crowded conditions, parts of their toes and beaks are cut off, as are the males’ snoods. (The snood is the flap of skin under the chin.) All this is done without any pain relievers. Imagine having the skin under your chin chopped off with a pair of scissors.
Many turkeys don’t even make it past the first few weeks of life on a factory farm before succumbing to “starve-out,” a stress-induced condition that causes young birds to stop eating. Turkeys are bred, drugged, and genetically manipulated to grow as large as possible as quickly as possible to increase profits. In 1960, average turkeys raised for meat weighed about 17 pounds. Today, they weigh 30 pounds. Turkeys are now so obese that they can’t reproduce naturally; instead, the majority of the birds who are born in the United States today on factory farms are conceived through artificial insemination. Their unnaturally large size causes many of them to become crippled under their own weight or to die from organ failure or heart attacks before they’re even 6 months old. According to an investigative report in the Wall Street Journal on the miserable conditions on turkey farms, “It’s common in a rearing house to find a dead bird surrounded by four others whose hearts failed after they watched the first one ‘fall back and go into convulsions, with its wings flapping wildly.'” Take PETA’s pledge to go vegan and remove turkey meat and other animal-derived foods from your diet. After just a month, many people report feeling healthier and more energetic. Most of all, going vegan means saving animals from cruelty.

Adopt-A-Turkey: A Heartwarming Holiday Cause
A shelter that rescues animals from factory farms inspires one yogi to go vegan.
Two years ago, Tricia Ritterbusch met her first live turkeys while visiting the Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, New York, a shelter that rescues animals from factory farms. It's no exaggeration to say that the encounter changed her life. "They were so curious and friendly," she says. "I leaned in to rub one turkey's belly and I felt her body melt into my hand like a dog's or cat's would." She's now a vegan and works for the Farm Sanctuary. The sanctuary (which also has a locations in California) holds a "Celebration for the Turkeys" the week before Thanksgiving. Volunteers share a vegan meal, then present the resident turkeys with a feast of their own. Thousands of families across the country have also created a new holiday tradition by adopting turkeys. A sponsorship provides for a rescued turkey's care at the shelter, and participants receive a photo of their turkey, an adoption certificate, biography, and a one-year subscription to Farm Sanctuary's newsletter. Visit Farm Sanctuary's Adopt-A-Turkey Project website to learn more.

november the 16th of 2018 BREAKING: If you’re eating turkey on #Thanksgiving, ones who suffered just like these might be on your plate 😢 New eyewitness footage shows “happy” turkeys gasping for air, left to die, jabbed, & more. please, let's stop treating turkeys atrociously
Turkeys Used for Food
Ben Franklin called the turkey “a true original native of America.” He had tremendous respect for their resourcefulness, agility, and beauty. They’re intelligent animals who enjoy having their feathers stroked and who like listening to music, with which they’ll often loudly sing along. In nature, they can fly 55 miles an hour, run 35 miles an hour, and live up to 10 years. But the story is very different for turkeys on factory farms: They’ll be killed when they’re only 3 to 5 months old and, during their short lives, will be denied even the simplest pleasures, such as running, building nests, and raising their young. Like chickens, the estimated 245 million turkeys raised and killed for their flesh every year in the U.S. have no federal legal protection. More than 46 million of them are killed each year at Thanksgiving alone, and more than 22 million die at Christmas.
Before ending up as holiday centerpieces, these gentle, intelligent birds spend their short lives on factory farms, where thousands of them are packed into dark sheds with no more than 3.5 square feet of space per bird. They’re genetically bred to grow as quickly as possible, and they often become crippled under their own weight. To keep the crowded birds from scratching and pecking each other to death, workers cut off portions of their toes and upper beaks with hot blades and de-snood the males. (The snood is the flap of skin that runs from the beak to the chest.) No pain relievers are used during any of these procedures. PETA investigations have documented that workers punched and stomped on live turkeys and slammed them against walls. At one facility, a farm manager bludgeoned young birds with what he called his “killing stick.” Turkeys don’t have the opportunity to breathe fresh air or feel the sun on their backs until they’re shoved onto trucks bound for slaughter.
They’re transported for hours without food or water through all weather extremes—and many may die on this nightmarish journey. At the slaughterhouse, the survivors are hung upside down by their weak and crippled legs before their heads are dragged through an electrified “stunning tank,” which immobilizes but doesn’t kill them. Many dodge the tank and are still completely conscious when their throats are slit. If the blade fails to cut the birds’ throats properly, they’re scalded alive in the tank of boiling water that’s used for feather removal. You can make a difference for these animals. Order PETA’s free vegan starter kit and we will send you tips and recipes to help you remove turkey flesh and other animal-derived products from your diet.

| The hidden lives of Turkeys
Many people think of turkeys as little more than holiday centerpieces, but turkeys are social, playful birds who enjoy the company of others. They relish having their feathers stroked and like to chirp, cluck, and gobble along to their favorite tunes. Anyone who spends time with them on farm sanctuaries quickly learns that turkeys are as varied in personality as dogs and cats. Read our Turkey Fun Facts to find out why!
Fascinating Turkey facts
Turkeys have been genetically modified to gain weight rapidly because fatter turkeys mean fatter wallets for farmers. But in nature, the turkey’s athletic prowess is impressive. Wild turkeys can fly at speeds of up to 55 miles per hour and run at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour. The natural lifespan of the turkey is up to 10 years, but on factory farms they are slaughtered when they’re just 5 months old. When not forced to live on filthy factory farms, turkeys spend their days caring for their young, building nests, foraging for food, taking dust baths, preening themselves, and roosting high in trees. People who care for turkeys at sanctuaries call them “natural detectives.” They are naturally curious, always checking out new sights and smells, and enjoy greeting visitors. Male turkeys, or “toms,” are bigger and have more colorful plumage than female turkeys, or “hens.” The males attract females with their wattles (colorful flaps of skin around their necks), and tufts of bristles or beards that hang from their chests.
Turkeys are born with full-color vision just like our own, and in nature they stay with their mothers for up to the first five months of their lives. These gentle birds are very bonded to their young—in the wild, a mother turkey will courageously defend her family against predators. Erik Marcus, the author of Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating, has spent a considerable amount of time with turkeys on farm sanctuaries. He reports, “Turkeys remember your face and they will sit closer to you with each day you revisit. Come back day after day and, before long, a few birds will pick you out as their favorite and they will come running up to you whenever you arrive. It’s definitely a matter of the birds choosing you rather than of you choosing the birds. Different birds choose different people.” This year, why not choose to have a cruelty-free Thanksgiving? We’ve got everything you need to make the switch. Access dozens of holiday recipes.

top 10 reasons not to eat turkeys
Pardon me, pilgrim! This Thanksgiving, how about ditching the dead bird? In today’s farming system, beautiful, inquisitive, intelligent turkeys endure lives of suffering and painful deaths. Here are 10 good reasons to carve out a new tradition by flocking to vegan entrées, along with some scrumptious holiday cooking tips and recipes—and thankfully, none of them require stuffing anyone. But first, a video of your turkey dinner in reverse:
1. Personality Plus
Turkeys are “smart animals with personality and character, and keen awareness of their surroundings,” says Oregon State University poultry scientist Tom Savage. The Atlantic article “Consider the Turkey” reports that researchers “have found that when an individual turkey is removed from his flock, even in domesticity, he’ll squawk in obvious protest until reunited with his posse.” They relish having their feathers stroked. They dance when reunited with a person they recognize. Anyone who spends time with them at farm sanctuaries quickly learns that turkeys are as varied in personality as dogs and cats.
2. Let Them Give Thanks, Too
The natural life expectancy of turkeys is up to 10 years, but on factory farms, they are slaughtered when they’re just 5 months old. In nature, young turkeys stay with their mothers for the first few months of their lives. Since Thanksgiving is a time to take stock of our lives and give thanks for all that we have, let turkeys give thanks, too, by keeping them off your plate.
3. Can You Spell ‘Pandemic’?
The first human death from bird flu in North America was recently reported, and that’s not a surprise, given that people are traveling more frequently worldwide. Also recently, The New York Times reported that “[c]ases of the new H7N9 avian influenza in China are surging alarmingly …. There are now about 300 confirmed cases, with more appearing every day. Roughly a quarter of the victims have died.” When comparing this strain to the H5N1 strain that emerged in 2003 and also spread from birds to people, experts report that the new strain is spreading faster. “H7N9 is blowing right by H5N1,” Michael T. Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, told The New York Times.

| 4. The Meat Recall Loophole
The U.S. government is the only government in the Western world that does not have the power to force a recall of contaminated animal products. Instead, American meat companies are allowed to decide whether or not to comply when the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) or the Food and Drug Administration requests a recall. The PBS show Frontline reported that “[o]ften, even if the USDA does issue a recall, the contaminated meat and poultry is never recovered, which means that consumers are probably buying it and consuming it.” Learn more about meat contamination.
5. Get Rid of Your ‘Extra Baggage’
A study in the Nutrition Reviews journal reports that “a low-fat vegan diet leads to weight loss of about 1 pound per week, even without additional exercise or limits on portion sizes, calories, or carbohydrates.” “There is evidence that a vegan diet causes an increased calorie burn after meals, meaning plant-based foods are being used more efficiently as fuel for the body, as opposed to being stored as fat,” says Dr. Neal Barnard, one of the study’s authors. Take the cruelty off your plate and look great? Sounds like a win-win situation.
6. Want Stuffing With Your Supergerms?
Dosing turkeys with antibiotics to stimulate their growth—and to keep them alive in filthy, disease-ridden conditions that would otherwise kill them—poses risks to people who eat them. The USDA confirmed that 80 percent of all antibacterial drugs used in the U.S. are given to animals, and often the animals aren’t even sick. Ralph Loglisci, project director at the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future, explains that “all low-dose usage of antibiotics can lead to a significant increase in antibiotic resistance.” Order Your FREE Vegan Starter Kit
SEND ME A VEGAN STARTER KIT
An article published by the Natural Resources Defense Council further details the dangers of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, explaining, “Drug-resistant bacteria can and do travel on meat but that’s just one of many routes off the farm. These dangerous bacteria can hitch a ride out of animal feedlots on workers who handle contaminated animals or meat. They can travel through water, soil, and air that come into contact with contaminated animal waste.” Furthermore, they can “teach” other bacteria to be resistant. Still hungry? Neither are we.

| 7. No Life for a Living Animal
On factory farms, turkeys are kept for months in sheds where they’re packed so tightly that flapping a wing or stretching a leg is nearly impossible. They stand in waste, and urine and ammonia fumes burn their eyes and lungs. At the slaughterhouse, turkeys often have their throats slit while hanging upside down and still conscious. Those who miss the automated knife are scalded to death in the defeathering tank. Watch this horrifying cartoon that depicts a turkey’s last moments in the slaughterhouse:
8. Foul Farming
Anyone who has driven by a farm has probably smelled it first from a mile away. Turkeys and other animals raised for food in the U.S. produce far more excrement than the entire U.S. human population, roughly 89,000 pounds per second, all without the benefit of waste-treatment systems. There are no meaningful federal guidelines to regulate how farms treat, store, and dispose of the trillions of pounds of concentrated animal excrement they produce each year. Learn more about how factory farming damages the environment.
9. Dismal Working Conditions
Killing animals is inherently dangerous work, and the fast line speeds, the dirty and slippery killing floors, and the lack of employee training make animal-processing plants some of the most dangerous places to work in America today. The industry has refused to slow down the lines or buy appropriate safety gear because these changes could cut into companies’ bottom lines. In its 185-page exposé on worker exploitation by the farmed-animal industry, “Blood, Sweat, and Fear: Workers’ Rights in U.S. Meat and Poultry Plants,” Human Rights Watch explains: “These are not occasional lapses by employers paying insufficient attention to modern human resources management policies. These are systematic human rights violations embedded in meat and poultry industry employment.
10. A Cornucopia of Turkey Alternatives
Give up the giblets and carve out a new tradition this Thanksgiving. We suggest cooking a Tofurky Roast, a savory soy- and wheat-based roast with stuffing and gravy, or one of the plethora of roasts and “meat” loaves that Field Roast has to offer. Give animals and yourself something to be really thankful for this year, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving: Disgrace to Turkeys: PETA’s Banned Ad
Thanksgiving can be the scariest time of year if you’re a turkey. More than 45 million of these fascinating birds are killed to disgrace Thanksgiving tables each year. In hopes of empowering kids everywhere to speak out as their families adorn their Thanksgiving tables with dead birds, PETA offers its Thanskgiving ad, ‘Grace.’ In the ad, you hear from one straightforward little girl as she tells it exactly like it is for turkeys who are killed for holiday meals when asked to say grace around her family’s dinner table. Despite the fact that it contains nothing graphic, NBC has rejected the ad, which was submitted to air during the iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. When not forced to live on filthy factory farms, turkeys spend their days caring for their young, building nests, foraging for food, taking dust baths, preening themselves, and roosting high in trees.
Regarded by many as little more than a holiday centerpiece, turkeys are as varied in personality as dogs and cats. They relish having their feathers stroked and like to chirp, cluck, and gobble along to their favorite tunes. This year, give turkeys something to be thankful for—pledge to go vegan and leave them off your plate. For a festive centerpiece that is more appealing than a stuffed avian body cavity, go faux! Turkey alternatives are available at many national grocery store chains or you can make your own faux-turkey at home. You can also tempt your taste buds with vegan versions of all of your favorites, like green bean casserole and sweet potato biscuits. Find delicious vegan recipes here.

22 Facts That Will Make You Pass on Turkey This Year
From the time that they’re hatched to when they’re slaughtered, turkeys go through hell. Here are twenty-two facts that will make you stop eating turkeys.
1. Three hundred million turkeys are killed in the U.S. each year, many for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
2. Baby turkeys are hatched in large incubators such as this one.
3. They will never see their mothers. Here, they huddle around a heat lamp for warmth.
4. After only a few weeks, turkeys are moved to large, windowless sheds …
5. … which they share with thousands of other turkeys. turkey-warehouse
6. They’ll all spend the rest of their lives there.
7. At many farms, workers can treat birds however they wish.
8. And they do.
9. To keep turkeys from killing each other, parts of their toes and beaks are cut off—without painkillers.
10. Turkeys are bred, drugged, and genetically manipulated to grow as large as possible as quickly as possible.
11. In 1970, the average turkey raised for meat weighed 17 pounds. Today, turkeys average 28 pounds.
12. Because of this artificial manipulation, turkeys’ legs often break beneath them. Order Your FREE Vegan Starter Kit

13. At 5 to 6 months old, turkeys are sent to the slaughterhouse. In the wild, they can live to be 10 years old.
14. The trucks that take them to slaughter sometimes crash.
15. When that happens, the turkeys who aren’t already dead are loaded onto another truck.
16. When they get to the slaughterhouse, turkeys are hung upside down by their legs, which often break during the process.
17. Then their heads are dunked into electrified water …
18. … before their throats are slit.
19. Then they are dunked in scalding-hot water to defeather them.
20. Many turkeys aren’t stunned properly and are scalded to death.

PETA Rescues Turkeys From Slaughterhouse Days Before Thanksgiving
Days before the worst time in America for turkeys, PETA helped rescue 16 gentle turkeys who’d been imprisoned on a farm in Utah, saving them from being sent to a slaughterhouse where their throats would be slit. PETA’s rescue efforts are a part of a larger liberation project negotiated by PETA friend, Oscar-nominated actor, and animal rights activist James Cromwell and the group Direct Action Everywhere (DxE). Cromwell and DxE arranged for the rescue of 100 turkeys who were facing impending death at Norbest turkey farms outside Salt Lake City just days before Thanksgiving. PETA is transporting six turkeys to Wildwood Farm Sanctuary in Newberg, Oregon, while the other 10 are going to The Humane Farming Association’s Suwanna Ranch in Elk Creek, California. Check back next week to see how these lovely ladies are settling into their new homes!
PETA Turkey rescue Thanksgiving
When we see turkeys as individuals—who, like humans and other animals, value their own lives and don’t want to die—we see that eating their flesh is indefensible. Sure, humans may look different from turkeys, but when it comes to important qualities such as the ability to feel excitement, create family bonds, cherish life, and experience pain, fear, and love, we’re all the same. Here’s something that the meat industry would hate for you to know: If you’re lucky enough to have one of these gentle birds as a friend, you’d know that they have diverse personalities and cherish taking care of their babies. These intelligent, naturally curious birds enjoy greeting new visitors and choose which humans they want to spend time with. Turkeys love to have their feathers stroked, and they’ll even listen to music and sing along.
But on farms, turkeys—who are naturally clean animals—are forced to live in their own filth in cramped, dank sheds. To keep the crowded birds from scratching and pecking one another, famers cut off parts of their beaks and toes without painkillers. Most turkeys are babies—only 3 to 5 months old—when they’re slaughtered. But during their short, miserable lives, they’re denied even the simplest pleasures, such as running, building nests, and raising their young. Save turkeys year-round by sharing vegan meals with your friends and family. Share this heartwarming story with your friends and family, too, and let them know that the best way to save any conscious, feeling animals raised for their flesh is to go vegan.
