A Life full of suffering: experiments on dogs financed by the telethon

PETA and Animal Testing reveal conditions at a French lab that performs cruel experiments on dogs with funding from the Telethon.

Position

Animal Testing opposes not only the cruelty, but also the taboo of the experiments on dogs that are hidden by the AFM-Telethon. This is not about prioritising dogs over people in need of a cure, nor is it about preferring animals to humans – or the other way around. This is about objecting to the violence of a reality that the AFM-Telethon hides from the general public while appealing to its generosity. In addition to addressing the issue of animal experimentation and the suffering these dogs endure, we aim to open discussion on what the Telethon represents: most people view it as a cause that cannot be questioned or criticised, which in turn raises the question of political decision-making in democracies and of the implications of charity work. Please ask the AFM-Telethon organization to stop these experiments and support the Animal Testing organization to help continue our investigations.

Muscular Dystrophy Patient Wants Funding for Cruel Dog Experiments to End

Pascaline Wittkowski has suffered from muscular dystrophy (MD) for more than 40 years. She’s speaking out against the cruelty and ineffectiveness of animal testing conducted in a futile attempt to cure her disease. Pascaline has written to French charity AFM-Téléthon asking for an end to cruel tests on beagles and golden retrievers, and she’s calling on the organisation to replace them with modern research methods that don’t rely on animals. Her letter reads as follows: In many of years of research into muscular dystrophy, no cure has been found. Thousands of animals have been caged, tortured, and killed for decades in tests that have no chance of curing the disease that I suffer from, nor any other sick person. In addition to being unethical, animal testing is neither reliable nor effective as a biological model for us. …

In addition to the terrible dependence on others that the disease inflicts on me, it is unbearable for me to know that living beings, sentient individuals who feel emotions in the same way we humans do, are abused, locked up, tortured, and used as we would never want to be. I did not ask that these animals suffer for me or die for me. Funding these experiments on dogs is clearly a waste of resources and money, delaying the discovery of an effective cure. While animal testing wastes time and resources and offers little hope of a cure to Pascaline and others with MD, animals continue to suffer and die needlessly. Last year, footage given to PETA France by the group Animal Testing revealed that dogs struggled to walk, swallow, and even breathe in painful experiments funded by AFM-Téléthon and conducted out of public view at France’s Alfort National Veterinary School. Most of the dogs used in these tests never reach adulthood. Some are completely crippled before they even reach the age of 6 months, and half endure an agonising death before they’re 10 months old.

There are better ways to help patients with muscle diseases. Cutting-edge techniques – such as using stem cells to develop disease-specific cures, developing ways to grow healthy human muscle cells that could be transplanted into patients with MD, and creating human-relevant drug-screening platforms – have led to the development of more promising therapies. Cruel Muscular Dystrophy Experiments in France Exposed

“I have not asked for animals to suffer for me.”

Pascaline Wittkowski—a woman who has suffered for 40 years from muscular dystrophy (MD)—has worked with PETA France to condemn cruel and pointless dog experiments on the eve of a major fund-raising telethon for MD experiments. Wittkowski told major French magazine L’OBS that if donors really want to help MD patients, the first step is to stop giving money to the French charity AFM-Téléthon—which funds painful and torturous MD experiments on dogs at Alfort National Veterinary School. The L’OBS feature includes a video released by PETA and PETA France in which Wittkowski denounces MD experiments performed on dogs in laboratories in France and the U.S., including at Texas A&M University. In the video, she emphatically declares that wasteful animal experiments offer patients such as herself only false hope. She condemns the cruelty of the experiments, in which dogs are bred to have a canine form of the crippling disease. “[T]hey’re maintaining this illusion with people. They’re maintaining this lie of telling them, ‘We’re going to heal you,'” she says.

She explains why after decades of testing on dogs, there’s still no cure or treatment to alleviate MD symptoms in human patients with this simple yet powerful statement: “I am not a dog.” Charities such as the AFM-Téléthon harm animals and divert money away from relevant, effective non-animal research that could help save lives.
