The End of the Seal Slaughter Is Finally Near

I'm delighted to share some exciting news. Today, Canadian senator Mac Harb introduced a historic bill to end Canada's commercial seal slaughter.Now that Russia—which had imported 95 percent of Canadian seal pelts—has joined the U.S., the E.U., Mexico, and others in banning seal fur, there are no markets for this fur. If passed, Harb's bill would transition people in sealing regions into sustainable economic programs. Senator Harb's bill comes on the heels of Sarah McLachlan's recent appeal on PETA's behalf to Prime Minister Harper urging him to end the slaughter and consider a government buyout of the sealing industry.

We are finally near ending the seal slaughter once and for all, but we need your help. Please take a few minutes and click here to urge Canadian senators to support Harb's bill.

“As an actor who will always consider Britain home, I was proud to learn that the European Union has banned seal-fur imports. In light of next week’s seal-products dispute hearing, I’m writing to urge the panel to uphold this ban, which is in line with the wishes of compassionate people all around the world, including the majority of European citizens.”
So wrote Jude Law to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), as it decides whether to overturn the European Union’s ban on importing seal fur at a final hearing in Geneva this week.
The award-winning thespian penned the letter, on behalf of PETA, just days after the start of Canada’s annual seal slaughter, in which club-wielding sealers bash in the heads of thousands of baby animals in order to skin them and sell their soft pelts. The EU, along with all other major markets including Russia and the USA, has banned the import of seal-fur, recognising the cruelty inherent in the seal massacre.
As a result, killing seals is no longer commercially viable, and even the minority of Canadians who traditionally have supported the slaughter are turning against it. Yet rather than ending this violent industry once and for all, the Canadian government is challenging the EU ban as a last-ditch effort to revive the trade.
Jude is not alone in calling on Canada to see sense, and stop the seal slaughter. Native Canadian Pamela Anderson also sent a message to the WTO earlier this year, while huge numbers of people across the globe have been moved to write to the Canadian government about this issue.
We’ll keep you posted on the WTO’s hearing. And, at this crucial moment, you, too, can speak out against the killing of baby seals. Please send a message to Canadian ministers asking them to put a stop to this barbaric and redundant industry now.

For centuries, pregnant harp seals have migrated from Greenland down the coast of Canada, stopping each spring to give birth on the ice floes off Newfoundland. And every year, the Canadian government funds a trade in which the baby seals are massacred by club-wielding sealers from the local fishing community while their pelts remain soft enough to sell on the international fur market. The commercial seal slaughter is not a subsistence activity for native peoples but an off-season fishing industry cash grab, and it accounts for less than 1 per cent of Newfoundland's economy. 

Over the last few years, all major markets have banned seal-pelt imports, including the US, the European Union, Mexico, Taiwan and even Russia, which had been importing 95 per cent of Canadian sealskins. The only reason the Canadian government continues to defend this dead industry is because political parties crave Newfoundland's swing seats in Parliament. But now even local sentiment is turning, and Canadian officials are seriously examining whether the slaughter should end. 

Sealing is surely on the way out, but we need your voice to reach the tipping point. The time is now to urge Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Keith Ashfield, Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird and Minister of International Trade Ed Fast to help bring the commercial seal slaughter to an immediate end by supporting a government buyout.

In Namibia one of the cruelest and largest acts of violence against any animal is taking place. Right now terrified seal pups are being rounded up, separated from their mothers, and brutally beaten to death.
From the beginning of July all the way through to November up to 85 000 seals will be slaughtered in Namibia annual seal cull.
And as the only country in the world to allow the killing of nursing pups, the Namibian slaughter is regarded as the world’s cruelest.
It is estimated that there are about 1 million Cape Fur Seals left in the wild. If the cull continues in its current form, unsustainable and without merit, the species will be all but extinct by 2019.
What would be laughable if it was not so cruel is that Cape Cross, one of the locations of this so called “Harvest” is a seal reserve which was established to protect them. But for five long months the resort becomes a killing field. It is closed off, no journalists are allowed in.
From 6am to 9am the clubbing goes on unabated. Only stopping to clean up before the tourists arrive.
Happy feet walk oblivious where blood soaked sand turned the golden sunset red. Children play and laugh where the yelps and cries of terror and pain failed to penetrate and touch those hardened hearts, as they mercilessly bludgeon pup after pup.
A message needs to be sent: We will not stand for this mass extermination.
We will not stand by whilst seals suffer the most horrific, painful and cruel deaths.
