Dear Elephant Lovers,
Please join our cause to help Chhouk, a three year old elephant, to get a prosthetic foot. He lost it to a poachers snare trap in March 2008 in the forests of Mondulkiri, Cambodia. He also probably had to watch his mother abandon him after she couldn't free him from the snare trap. His injury has now healed however without a prosthetic he faces a lifetime of bone deformities and spine injuries. Please show your support by joining our cause and inviting as many people as you can. We can make a real difference in his life - it is time for his luck to change.

One issue that we often discuss is the importance of having elephants around for future generations. We believe it is vital that we are able to keep elephants in many so called range states, partly because they are such a strong symbol for biodiversity and all wildlife but partly also since they in so many ways represent our connection with nature and the past. That elephants is a key to tourism and thereby poverty reduction is another factor that weighs in - despite the challenges caused by human-elephant conflicts. A world without elephants would be a much poorer world, don't you think?

As we celebrate Labor Day, I must call attention to the suffering of animals who labor for human "entertainment."

From the very moment that she was born into captivity, Tonka has never known the freedom of a holiday.

For more than 20 years, she has been the "property" of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. She has been shackled in line alongside all the other elephants in the circus and forced to perform stupid, often physically painful tricks over and over again, day in and day out.

With your support, PETA is diligently working to bring help to Tonka and all animals who are condemned to lives of suffering and abuse.

Circuses such as Ringling are sad, deadly places for animals. Baby elephants are taken away from their loving mothers and forced into lives of punishment, debasement, and extreme loneliness. PETA has photographic evidence showing trainers cruelly wrestling baby elephants using ropes, sharp hooks, and electric-shock devices in order to force them to learn tricks. We have also videotaped Ringling's methods for keeping elephants in line, which involve striking and hooking them with steel-tipped bullhooks. Trainers sink the sharp metal point of a bullhook into the sensitive skin behind the ears and knees of even very young elephants, causing them to bellow in pain and raise their trunks in submission.

Elephants in Ringling's possession are chained constantly inside filthy, poorly ventilated boxcars for an average of more than 26 straight hours—and often 60 to 70 hours at a time—when the circus travels. This is absolute agony for them. In the wild, elephants walk up to 30 miles a day, shifting their enormous weight to avoid back and leg problems that would otherwise result from standing still. Elephants don't understand why they are kept so tightly confined or why they are forced to perform in front of screaming audiences, and Ringling beats them until they comply immediately with every order.

Thankfully, this is a fight that we are beginning to win. Ringling hasn't been able to keep a national sponsor in years because of the information on circus abuses that PETA has provided. More and more cities across the country are banning animal acts after receiving our information about the cruelty inherent in the hideous animal-circus industry. And although it is pushing back with outreach, money paid to "mom blogs," library materials touting the "kindness" of the circus, and free tickets for schools, Ringling is being forced to perform fewer shows at smaller venues as families choose humane forms of entertainment rather than expose their children to such a sad and archaic display of the domination of abused and deprived animals.

IDA partnered with the Catalina Island Conservancy to institute a five-year contraceptive program for the island’s bison. This should minimize or eliminate the need for stressful and costly relocations of bison from the island.
As a result of IDA’s work as a founding member of the Save Japan Dolphins Coalition and the stunning success of the film The Cove, there has been no dolphin slaughter this year in Taiji, Japan.

Across the nation and around the world, IDA has been there for animals in need. Je sais combien vous vous souciez des animaux , j'espère donc que vous vous joindrez à moi et que vous agirez pour sauver les éléphants d'Afrique. Je viens de lire le dernier rapport de nos équipes sur le terrain , il nous prévient que les éléphants font face à une situation critique. Le nombre de saisies d'ivoire illégal a de nouveau grimpé en flèche car les braconniers ne cessent d'alimenter le marché international de l'ivoire. A ce rythme, de nombreuses populations locales d'éléphants d'Afrique pourraient s'éteindre... en particulier en Afrique Centrale et occidentale. Chers amis, il faut mettre fin au commerce de l'ivoire maintenant. The groups plan to appeal the dismissal.

Lucy the elephant lives in a zoo in the Edmonton Valley Zoo in Edmonton, Alberta. She has been the focus of a lengthy campaign by several groups who want to have her moved to a sanctuary in the United States, like the elephant sanctuary in Tennessee or the Performing Animal Wildlife Sanctuary in California.

Several factors make Lucy's case unique. Firstly she lives farther north than any other elephant in North America, putting her well out of the climate that elephants are used to. She's also in poor health, likely resulting from her confinement and the climate.

As well, Lucy is the only elephant in Canada that lives alone. Elephants are inherently very social animals and are not accustomed to being solitary.

For several years, groups like Zoocheck have been working to garner support for and increase public awareness of Lucy's situation.

After public appeals from celebrities like Bob Barker and William Shatner fell on deaf ears, and after the city ignored a petition with 3,500 names, the groups decided to seek a legal solution to the problem.

The lawyer fighting for Lucy's relocation is arguing that Lucy's health problems are a result of her living situation and the only long term solution is to have Lucy be moved to an environment where she can live in a more natural environment.

It seems like the legal battle is only just getting started. Hopefully this setback doesn't spell the eventual end of the effort to free Lucy.

When we are fighting to have Lucy relocated, let us not forget that while her situation tugs especially hard at the average person's heart strings, she is not alone. Animals of all sorts are suffering in zoos all over the world and any campaign to free Lucy must be in the context of abhorring all zoos, not just one particular zoo.

Animals do not exist for our entertainment any more than they exist for our consumption. Boycott zoos and circuses and any other industry that exploits animals for the amusement of humans.

FOUR PAWS Kenya vet unit saves the lives of numerous elephants

It is an eventful year for the FOUR PAWS Mobile Veterinary Unit in Kenya, as the team faces an increasing number of poaching injuries in elephants and other wildlife. In April, 32-year old Dr. Jeremiah Poghon replaced Dr. David Ndeereh as head of the unit, after its founder Ndeereh was transferred to the Kenya Wildlife Service, where he is now in charge of lab and field diagnostics. During the first months on the new job, taking on his dream to be working with African wildlife, Jeremiah Poghon had to observe that injuries in elephants and big cats caused by snares and arrow heads are going up dramatically. The team has to cover an incredibly large area in the Tsavo and Amboseli National Parks. Injured animals are often spotted and reported by tourists and patrol personnel.

An emergency call from the Rombo Kenya Wildlife Service Station announced a heavily injured elephant calf. On site, the team identified the calf which had a spear in its head, having penetrated too far into the nasal passage between the eyes to be able to shake the object loose. The young elephant was darted, after giving the vet unit a good chase about the thorny bushes for a full hour. The animal‘s fighting spirit impressed everyone involved and fuelled expectations that it would have the determination to recover in spite of the serious flesh wound. The iron spear was removed. Because it was logged in the bony sinuses, the team had to use a wire cutter to pull it out. After that, the wound was taken care of – as well as a second injury on the animal‘s back, presumably caused by the same hunting tool. The elephant calf was transported to Voi with the unit’s vehicle and prepared to be airlifted to Nairobi for further treatment. Asked about his prognosis for his brave patient, Dr. Poghon said: „She has a strong will to survive and will live to be the heritage of this country“.

Snare traps are a threat to Kenyan wildlife
In their work, Jeremiah Poghon and his team have to dart and treat wounded elephants almost on a daily basis, mostly limping with injuries to the limbs or trunks – the latter can cause damage to the animals’ sense of balance. Limping wild animals are easy to spot and the treatment is usually a successful one, after which the anaesthesia can be revoked and the animal released on the spot with a sound prognosis to recover rapidly. The increasing number of wire snares is a big threat to Kenyan wildlife, though. An elephant with a snare around his right ear was spotted just in time. The wire had almost split the ear in two and urgently needed to be removed, along with the dead tissue. This pachyderm was also released with a good prognosis.


Reuniting with lion Kip
Other duties include the continuation of last year’s programme of monitoring selected lions via signal collars, which regularly need to be replaced. Among three others, this collar was replaced for young male Kip, whose life had been saved in 2010 by the FOUR PAWS vet unit, after the keen big cat had got into a fight with two other males and was severely injured. Ambogga, Belter and Amy were also selected for collar placement, which has so far proven to be a successful method to keep the predators away from livestock – and thereby from angry villagers – as well as analysing their long-term movements. Another lion was treated for mange: in order to attract the animal afflicted by the skin disease, the team played sounds of a buffalo calf in distress. The broadcast immediately attracted 24 hyenas to the location. On the upside: the lion pack that was the intended audience did also show up eventually.


The Mobile Veterinary Unit is operated by The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in cooperation with The Kenyan Wildlife Service - and funded by FOUR PAWS.

With their massive size, long lives and strong sense of community, elephants have captured our imagination and inspired us for centuries.Slaughtered for their precious ivory tusks and confined to ever-shrinking habitats, these ancient symbols of wisdom and family bonds are facing severe threats today. This magnificent creature's future is at stake.In a matter of weeks or even days, Congress will be voting on some extremely important pieces of funding legislation for international conservation. Whether or not there is adequate funding is up to us.Ask your members of Congress to expand international conservation programs that give elephants and other species another chance for survival.
Agencies like the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and United States Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) provide critical support to international monitoring and anti-poaching efforts, and help governments establish new parklands and preserves to protect key habitats - exactly the kind of work we need to do and expand if we want to ensure a future for threatened species including elephants.While a miniscule part of the budget, this support provides potentially lifesaving opportunity for these charismatic and magnificent giants.Time is running out before Congress makes a final decision. Conservation efforts backed by the United States have already helped pave the way for significant progress. In Myanmar, the USFWS Asian Elephant Conservation Fund helped reduce the threat of illegal captures of wild elephants by deploying Elephant Protection Units. The U.S. worked with the Indonesian government to find $30 million for restoring tropical forests that elephants, tigers, rhinos and orangutans call home.
Partnerships like these are key if we're going to save elephants - but they depend on adequate support from the United States as a leader in the conservation of elephants and many other species.

Increase funding for international conservation programs
Dear Member of Congress,

As a constituent greatly concerned about the dwindling populations of elephants, tigers and other endangered and threatened species, I’m writing to urge you to increase conservation funding directed overseas through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Biodiversity Program, the Multinational Species Conservation Funds at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), the U.S. contribution to the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the U.S. Forest Service International Program (FSIP).

I’m worried that we are losing our biological heritage. Extinctions are happening 100 to
1,000 times more quickly than the natural rate and unless we alter course, 60% of the earth’s species may disappear by the end of this century.

The USAID Biodiversity Program protects some of the largest and most at-risk natural landscapes, such as the Congo Basin, the Amazon Basin, the Coral Triangle, and Southern Sudan's national parks. This investment serves multiple goals and addresses clean water, human health, global warming, local democracy, and poverty reduction.

The Multinational Species Conservation Funds administered by the USFWS have helped to protect some of the world’s most endangered species such as Sumatran rhinoceroses,
great apes, African elephants, Asian elephants, tigers, and sea turtles. USFWS also supplements U.S. foreign assistance which has led to the establishment of new nature reserves, reduced poaching and developed nature-based tourism.

The U.S. contribution to the Global Environment Facility leverages contributions from other developed countries and recipient countries to fund large landscape level projects in the developing world to address significant conservation challenges related to habitat loss, desertification, and pollutants.

Additionally, the U.S. Forest Service promotes forest conservation around the globe by responding to natural disasters and humanitarian crises, advances U.S. efforts to conserve forests worldwide and provides technical assistance to partners overseas.

These programs are essential to protecting the world's wildlife and wild places. I urge you to support $215 million for the USAID Biodiversity Program, $175 million for the USAID Sustainable Landscapes program, $188 million for the USAID Climate Change Adaptation program, $149 million for the Global Environment Facility, $15 million for the USFWS Multinational Species Conservation Funds, and $14 million for the U.S. Forest Service International Program in the FY 2011 Budget.

Santa Ana Zoo Endangers Animals and the Public


Beaten with bullhooks, jabbed by electric prods, and living in constant fear of punishment—this is the reality faced by elephants used for entertainment, such as in circuses and for elephant rides. Despite public safety issues and the cruelty that goes into training these gentle animals, the Santa Ana Zoo continues to offer elephant rides to the public.


The elephants used for rides at the zoo are provided by Have Trunk Will Travel (HTWT), an organization that rents elephants for use in rides, shows, and photo shoots. While HTWT defends the use of barbaric instruments to train elephants, the city of Santa Ana needs to acknowledge the danger and cruelty of offering elephant rides and say "No!" to HTWT's cruel practices.

The city of Santa Ana is supporting the cruel treatment of elephants and putting public safety at risk by offering elephant rides at the city zoo. Elephants used to give rides are trained and controlled with bullhooks—barbaric training devices that resemble a fireplace poker. Trainers use bullhooks to strike and jab elephants in the most sensitive parts of their bodies, often causing puncture wounds and abscesses. The constant threat of punishment keeps elephants afraid and submissive.

Ten years ago, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) strongly encouraged its members to discontinue public elephant rides in the interest of safety , and most zoos stopped offering them. By continuing to give rides, the Santa Ana Zoo is acting more like a circus than an accredited zoo. In addition, the city of Santa Ana is out of step with the rest of Orange County, which has a very progressive ordinance banning public contact—including rides—with elephants. The elephants used for rides at the Santa Ana Zoo are provided by Have Trunk Will Travel (HTWT), a company that rents elephants out for rides, photo shoots, weddings, and ridiculous reality television shows. Not only does HTWT use bullhooks to control elephants, it also defended the cruel use of electric prods in comments it made about changes in federal policy regarding elephant training and handling practices.

Many people—including children—have been injured after stressed elephants have snapped and run amok. An elephant on loan from HTWT to the Denver Zoo created havoc when she went on a rampage, threw her trainer against a wall, scattered crowds of zoogoers, and knocked over a mother and her baby, who was in a stroller. It took three hours to recapture the elephant.

Please contact Santa Ana's mayor and city council members and ask them to protect elephants and public safety by banning elephant rides in the city of Santa Ana.

The moment a brave elephant mum shakes a vicious crocodile off her trunk


These dramatic pictures show a clash of the titans as a protective elephant mum and a ferocious crocodile get in an epic tug of war in Zambia.

The female elephant and her baby were drinking from the Luangwa River in the South Luangwa National Park when they were attacked.

Using incredible strength the female managed to shake off the croc after walking away from the water.

She survived the attack along with her baby, despite a second scare when the baby tripped as the pair ran away.

Saving the World's Remaining Elephants

In 1989, the United Nations Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) gave elephants the highest level of protection, which effectively banned the international trade in ivory. The world community took this action because poaching for ivory had driven Africa’s continent-wide population from approximately 1.2 million elephants to about 600,000 in a 10-year period in the 1980s. Sadly, numerous actions over the past 12 years have led to the partial lifting of the ban, which has undermined its integrity. Poaching and seizures of ivory have been increasing. Elephants are again in great danger. Please help stop the ivory trade and preserve critical elephant habitat before it's too late.



Protecting Elephants from Poachers
Ivory poaching is one of the greatest threats these amazing animals face. Since the partial lifting of the United Nations Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) ivory trade ban in 1997, and one-time “experimental” ivory stockpile sales to Japan and China in 1999 and 2008 respectively, poaching has increased, especially in West and Central Africa. In response, IFAW provides training and basic equipment - from uniforms and tents to GPS units and vehicles - to park rangers in several African nations to help them prevent ivory poaching. Many African elephant range states don't have the capacity or personnel they need to secure elephant habitats and must rely on nonprofit groups like IFAW for practical assistance.


Protecting Critical Elephant Habitats
Through a model approach to protecting elephant habitats, IFAW is working in East Africa (Tsavo National Park in Kenya), southern Africa (Liwonde National Park in Malawi) and Asia (Manas National Park in India). In each of these protected areas IFAW is helping to provide safe havens for elephants and other wildlife; find practical solutions to human-elephant conflicts; provide basic infrastructural and park management support; and respond to the needs of individual animals in distress. In the long term, IFAW is committed to helping government agencies build their capacity to protect elephants, understanding the dynamics of the elephant populations in these areas, and finding sustainable, long-term financing solutions for habitat protection efforts.


Living with Elephants
As human populations increase and elephant populations are squeezed into smaller and smaller areas, human-elephant conflicts inevitably flare up. All too often, no action is taken to resolve these conflicts. At other times, governments undertake irresponsible, politically motivated and cruel management approaches such as culling - killing individual elephants, families and entire herds -- in a misguided attempt to solve a complex problem with bullets. Together with poor land-use policies, this kind of conservation management solves nothing. Through a multi-pronged approach of using science to inform policy and providing practical solutions to ease human-elephant conflict, IFAW promotes sustainable, long-term coexistence between elephants and people.


Eliminating the Ivory Trade
If ivory had no commercial value there would be no incentive for anyone to kill elephants for their tusks. And, with adequate legislation and enforcement to ensure compliance - admittedly, huge challenges - one of the major threats to the survival of elephants would almost certainly disappear. Los Angeles Zoo Elephant Exhibit On Trial This Week

After winding its way through the courts for five years, a taxpayer lawsuit against the Los Angeles Zoo regarding its controversial $42 million elephant exhibit has finally gone to trial. The lawsuit, filed by attorney David Casselman, seeks to stop the display of elephants in a small, inadequate exhibit that does not meet their needs. The zoo currently holds a male elephant Billy, and females Tina and Jewel, on little more than two acres of useable space.

Filed in 2007, the suit alleges ongoing illegal, damaging and wasteful actions by the zoo, including construction of an exhibit that does not provide the large space and natural conditions elephants need for health and well-being. The plaintiffs charge that inadequate conditions perpetuate captivity-caused foot and joint diseases that kill elephants prematurely, and that the risk of abusive handling practices still exists.

Witnesses in the trial include world-renowned elephant researcher Dr. Joyce Poole, wildlife veterinarians Dr. Mel Richardson and Dr. Phil Ensley, Emory University neuroscientist Dr. Lori Marino, Born Free Foundation CEO Will Travers, and The Elephant Sanctuary CEO Rob Atkinson. IDA Elephant Campaign Director Catherine Doyle, who has been fighting for the elephants at the Los Angeles Zoo since 2003, was also called to testify.

The trial is attracting media attention and is sure to open the eyes of the public to the outdated practice of confining elephants in unnatural zoo exhibits that lead to terrible suffering and premature death. A win in the lawsuit would set a precedent that could send shockwaves through the zoo industry. The trial is expected to last through the week.

Los Angeles City Council Establishes Elephant Awareness Day

Also this week, the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously to declare August 3, 2012 Elephant Awareness Day. This landmark resolution, authored by Councilmember Tony Cardenas, draws attention to the plight of elephants in zoos, circuses and the wild.

Councilmember Cardenas spoke forcefully about elephants in captivity, stating: "I believe it is my duty to speak for animals who cannot speak for themselves, and there is no animal more deserving of recognition than the elephant, so often subjected to horrible abuses and neglect."
IDA Elephant Campaign Director Catherine Doyle spoke in support of the resolution, reminding council members that education is the key to protecting and preserving elephants.

SeaWorld Ruling Could Lead To End Of Elephants In Circuses

IDA is praising the legal decision rejecting SeaWorld Orlando’s appeal of two Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) citations that followed the horrific death of orca trainer Dawn Brancheau in 2010. In particular, the court supported OSHA’s recommendation that barriers be used to protect trainers working with orcas.

IDA calls on OSHA to apply that same wise recommendation to captive elephants, by requiring all handlers to work with the animals from behind a protective barrier. Many more elephants than orcas have killed trainers. If zoos, circuses and other entertainment businesses cannot comply, they simply should not be exhibiting elephants. Tembo's toenails are split. Sunda has sores on her feet that never go away and her joints ache. These elephants are weary to the bone as they uncontrollably and neurotically weave back and forth.
All day, people shuffle past. No one stops for long. Sunda and Tembo have seen a million faces.
Cameras flash and flash again. Few realize Sunda's and Tembo's plight – the pain and suffering they are forced to endure week after week, month after month, year after year.
This scenario repeats itself every day in dozens of zoos.

What outrages me most is that it is not ignorance that perpetuates this horrific cruelty, but the purposeful neglect and inaction by zoo administrators, veterinarians and politicians, who for the sake of the almighty dollar, force this lifetime of pain, suffering, and premature death on these gentle giants.
However, I am pleased to report that despite the intransigence and greed of the zoo industry, progress is being made since IDA kicked off our campaign on behalf of captive elephants.

The organization they were referring to was IDA. Thanks to you and tens of thousands of other IDA members, 22 zoos have closed their elephant exhibits, announced their intention to do so, or transferred elephants to life-saving sanctuaries.
Our 2011-12 list of the Ten Worst Zoos for Elephants generated media coverage around the world, as IDA once again exposed the hidden suffering of elephants in zoos.
After nearly 40 frozen winters together, you would think 50-year-old Asian Sunda could find solace with African cage-mate Tembo. But that's not the case. In fact, the zoo's own records show that these mismatched elephants just don't get along. In zoos elephants never get to choose their companions. So they can be condemned to live with an elephant with whom they are utterly incompatible – for life. To add insult to injury, at the Topeka Zoo the elephants are confined as many as 18 hours daily in a space the size of a public bathroom stall to you or me, with ungiving concrete floors that wreak havoc on their feet.
Topeka, Kansas is a long way from home.
But there are rays of hope for Tembo and Sunda - hope that exists because I know you are committed to protecting and advocating for the rights, welfare and habitats of animals.
Elephants in zoos are BIG BUSINESS. The fates of Tembo and Sunda and more than two hundred of these majestic creatures hang in the balance right now.
Topeka Zoo officials are debating whether to close their outdated elephant exhibit and send the elephants to another zoo. Or they may choose to let Tembo and Sunda languish and suffer in Topeka until they prematurely die. But IDA wants Tembo and Sunda released to a dedicated elephant sanctuary in Tennessee with over 2,700 secure acres of dense forests, sub-tropical grasslands and clear water.
To save Tembo and Sunda, you don't have to be an activist. But will you take action?

Now, some Toronto city Councillors are wondering if they made the right decision when they voted to send the elephants to the PAWS Sanctuary in California.

As a supporter of In Defense of Animals (IDA) who is interested in the welfare of elephants, I want to express my sincere thanks to you for standing by the elephants at the Toronto Zoo and for doing what is in their best interest by sending them to the PAWS Sanctuary, one of the best facilities for elephants in North America.

It is shocking that the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) has resorted to bully tactics to try and force the city's hand. This includes attempting to coerce the city into changing the governance model for the zoo to one that would give the zoo more control, while taxpayers still foot the bill for zoo operations. Under this model, the city and concerned citizens would have no avenue for protecting the welfare of the animals at the zoo.

The world is watching the situation in Toronto. I urge you to stand firm by maintaining complete control of the zoo and ensuring that the elephants are sent to PAWS as soon as possible.

IDA applauds the Calgary Zoo for deciding to end its Asian elephant program after 40 years, and for the right reasons: lack of space, a cold climate that prohibits year-round outdoor access, and a small social group. The zoo holds one male and four female elephants, one of whom is pregnant. The closure will take place in the next four to five years.

Unfortunately, the zoo plans to send the elephants to another facility where breeding can continue, despite the fact that urban zoos cannot provide adequate conditions for the elephants already in captivity. The Calgary Zoo has lost one elephant calf to the elephant herpes virus, putting any calves born into the group at risk of contracting the lethal disease.

IDA hopes the Calgary Zoo’s decision will send a loud and clear message to the many zoos holding elephants in tiny displays in cold weather areas. It’s what IDA has long been saying all along: if a zoo can’t meet the physical, social and psychological needs of elephants, it simply should not keep them.

The Calgary Zoo stated that the welfare of the elephants drove its decision. We can only hope that when it comes time to shutter its exhibit, the zoo will see that a sanctuary is the best option for the elephants. Click here to read IDA’s 2009 report, Elephants In Cold Climate Zoos.
