In May of 2003, IDA created “Responsible Animal Guardian Month,” to inspire and encourage people who care about animals to get more involved locally, to make the world a better place for the animals whose love and loyalty provide us such joy and comfort.

Victory For Birds At Heart Of The City Farmers' Market, San Francisco
On May 1, Heart of the City Farmers’ Market in San Francisco, California announced that live bird sales will be banned starting May 27. This is a huge victory!
For over two years, activists led by LGBT Compassion have provided documentation that these live bird vendors were responsible for numerous violations of local, state and federal laws including several health code violations and close to 800 animal cruelty violations.
Every year, this ban will protect over 100,000 chickens, quail, and other small birds from the miserable and terrifying experience of being overcrowded in small cages, transported in extreme weather, shoved upside down into a paper bag, and butchered in backyards and kitchens in San Francisco. International Day Of Action For Elephants In Zoos - Call For Organizers
Are you ready to take action for elephants? IDA’s third Annual International Day of Action for Elephants in Zoos (IDAEZ) is Saturday, June 11, 2011.
IDAEZ is a global event designed to bring mammoth attention to the plight of elephants in zoos and to end their suffering. On June 11, pro-elephant advocates will turn out en masse at their local zoos, holding outreach events and demos to educate the public about the tragic effects of keeping elephants in small, impoverished zoo pens where they suffer and die prematurely.
Please stand up for suffering elephants and organize an event or leafleting at your local zoo. If you live near a zoo with elephants, they need your voice! Organizing an event is easy - we'll support you with materials and everything you need to make your event a success.
By participating in this event, you become part of a global community of pro-elephant advocates dedicated to ending the suffering of elephants in zoos. Speak Up For Wyoming's Mustangs - Comment Deadline Is May 6
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is accepting public comments on a plan to capture 90 percent of the wild horses living in the White Mountain and Little Colorado Herd Management Areas in Wyoming. The BLM wants to permanently remove 696 of the mustangs in a mid-July 2011 roundup, a time when the agency has admitted that "foals are smaller," "water requirements are greater," and horses "may become more easily dehydrated." Summer roundups last year resulted in dozens of deaths, including at least 15 caused by dehydration-related complications. Submit comments by May 6.

Remembering those we've lost

For almost 150 years, Memorial Day has served as a national day of remembrance—a day to reflect on the lives of those lost. For the last 30 of those years, PETA has led the fight to stop animal abuse and save animals' lives.
As you pause this Memorial Day to remember those who have passed away, we'd like to ask you to think also of the animals who were not able to be saved—particularly those who have perished over this past year.

Knut, the polar bear cub who was the toast of the Berlin Zoo four short years ago, died this year at the young age of 4 after living in constant stress in an enclosure a fraction of the size of his natural home range. Kalina, the first orca to be born and raised in captivity at SeaWorld, died after spending all 25 years of her life in a barren concrete pool rather than the freedom of the sea. Daisy was a sweet pit bull who froze to death in the frigid January temperatures when the chain she was attached to prevented her from reaching any shelter.

Filling your plate with meat, dairy products, and eggs could be a recipe for heart disease, obesity, cancer, diabetes, and even impotence. Leading health experts agree that going vegan is the single best thing we can do for ourselves and our families.
Healthy vegan diets support a lifetime of good health and provide protection against numerous diseases, including our country's three biggest killers: heart disease, cancer, and strokes.
The American Dietetic Association (ADA) states that vegetarians and vegans enjoy a lower risk of death from ischemic heart disease, lower blood cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, lower rates of hypertension and type 2 diabetes, and lower body mass indexes, as well as lower overall cancer rates. The ADA concludes that vegetarian or vegan diets "are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases.
Did You Know? A major 2006 study of 135,000 people found that those who frequently ate grilled skinless chicken had a staggering 52 percent higher risk of bladder cancer than people who never ate it.
Well-planned vegan diets provide us with all the nutrients that we need, minus all the saturated fat, cholesterol, and contaminants found in animal flesh, eggs, and dairy foods. Scientists have also found that vegetarians have stronger immune systems than their meat-eating friends; this means that they are less susceptible to everyday illnesses such as the flu. Vegetarians and vegans live, on average, six to 10 years longer than meat-eaters.

Would you ever open your refrigerator, pull out 16 plates of pasta, toss 15 in the trash, and then eat just one plate of food? How about leveling 55 square feet of rain forest for a single meal or dumping 2,400 gallons of water down the drain? Of course you wouldn't. But if you're eating chickens, fish, turkeys, pigs, cows, milk, or eggs, that's what you're doing—wasting resources and destroying our environment.

A recent United Nations report concluded that a global shift toward a vegan diet is necessary to combat the worst effects of climate change. And the U.N. is not alone in its analysis. Researchers at the University of Chicago concluded that switching from a standard American diet to a vegan diet is more effective in the fight against climate change than switching from a standard American car to a hybrid. And a German study conducted in 2008 concluded that a meat-eater's diet is responsible for more than seven times as much greenhouse-gas emissions as a vegan's diet is. The verdict is in: If you care about the environment, one of the single most effective things that you can do to save it is to adopt a vegan diet.
According to Environmental Defense, if every American skipped one meal of chicken per week and substituted vegetarian foods instead, the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than half a million cars off U.S. roads.
Many leading environmental organizations, including the National Audubon Society, the Worldwatch Institute, the Sierra Club, the Union of Concerned Scientists, and even Al Gore's Live Earth—have recognized that raising animals for food damages the environment more than just about anything else that we do. Whether it's the overuse of resources, global warming, massive water or air pollution, or soil erosion, raising animals for food is wreaking havoc on the Earth.

Should animals be treated like 'waste products'?
So it's Australia Day and they call this the lucky country. But unfortunately, Australia is not such a lucky place to be if you're a dairy calf...
You see, cows can't magically produce milk. Like humans, first they have to have a baby. But one baby isn't enough; to keep the milk flowing cows are made to have a new calf every year! Their babies are then taken away so that their mothers' milk can be harvested for humans. And that's where the horror story begins...Every year, over 700,000 unwanted calves are killed as 'waste products' of the dairy industry. And now the industry has stooped to new lows, by trying to push through a new Standard that would allow calves to be starved of feed for the last 30 hours of their life.

More than 9 out of 10 Canadians (95%) agree that animal pain and suffering should be reduced as much as possible, even in those cases in which the animals are raised to be slaughtered. SMUDGGIE'S LIFE cHAPTER III

To: Members in Hospice care for old dogs who are dying
While Smudggie and I were getting to know each other, I met a man named Paul. He was (and still is) a kind and loving person. He wanted to share his life with me and Smudggie. I told him that, if he wanted to love me, he had to love my doggie too. He looked at me as if to say “WHAT?” Although Paul was a loving person he never had any experience with animals and the joy they give. He said “Okay. I’ll try.” In my heart I said, “If this doesn’t work out, Paul goes.”
One evening Paul wanted to share my bed with me. I told him that he could not do that because that’s where Smudggie sleeps. Paul slept on the couch…and Smudggie just smiled. After a while, Paul became Smudggie’s father and loved her almost as I did.
Smudge had a beautiful back yard to play in. It was a wooded hill with a pooled stream at the bottom. Need I say more? She would run down the hill, jump in the water, and run back up the hill. This continued for hours. I was really falling in love with this little girl.
Smudggie had a favorite toy. It was a pair of Paul’s socks. I would put one sock inside the other and tie them in a knot. Then, I would throw them for Smudggie to catch. She loved it! Then, we would wrestle with the sock. This went on for months until, one day, I told Smudggie to go and get her sock. She ran all over the house looking for her favorite thing in the whole wide world. SHE COULDN’T FIND IT! It just so happens, that I had done some laundry that day, and had put some clothes on the bed.. My Smudggie went to the bed and grabbed a clean pair of Paul’s socks. My little darling was determined to play; and so ‘smart’ I thought.
We had a pet rabbit named Bandit. Bandit lived in the house with Smudggie for awhile. I would give Bandit carrots to eat; Smudggie would wait till I wasn’t looking and steal the carrots. She would eat the whole carrot right in fron of Bandit. I had to laugh. A DOG EATING CARROTS!
Smudggie would also steal food from our plates when we weren’t looking. This happened several times, especially if we had to answer the phone. If she couldn’t steal the food, she would sit there with that ‘droopy’, ‘forlorn’ look and drool. Of course, she got a taste or two.
That is when I decided that my little girl was a juvenile delinquent!

THE HOSPICE JOURNEY

Originating in the medieval ages, the term hospice meant lodging for travelers that provides comfort and security. The modern hospice approach to care focuses on comfort and dignity for the dying [dog or cat] and their loved ones. Each furbaby is cared for in a manner that allows that dog or cat to die as they have lived, in harmony with his/her lifestyle. The focus is on caring, not curing. This approach is called palliative care and aims for pain relief and sympton control rather than cure. This philosophy is at the HEART of hospice care.
The basic principles of hospice care are as follows: Death with dignity. End of life care that eases both physical and emotional. Palliative care. To achieve the best quality of life through relief of suffering. The respect of choosing WHERE one's furbaby will die. Significance of time. To learn to choose wisely to do what matters most to you and your furbaby. Importance of family. It is important to the furbaby to have those who love him/her around them during the dying process.
At the end of a loved furbabies life, while caregivers may feel pain and sadness, they have the opportunity to grow more stronger and courageous. Hospice is NOT about death, but about the quality of life as it nears its end.

IDA Assisting In Richmond, California Cruelty Case
IDA and our President, Dr. Elliot M. Katz, are assisting a victim of animal abuse in Richmond,California. A little dog named Taz was taken and beaten by a landlady. Taz is hopefully on his way to recovery, thanks to the efforts of his guardian and the Richmond police.

The accused woman is in jail. The veterinarian has diagnosed that there is still a considerable loss of sight in one or both eyes. IDA is putting up the money for Saul's vet bill.

One Wild Horse Roundup Postponed - Help Us Stop Another!

Tuesday, the Supreme Court decided that the Constitution protects animal abusers who torture dogs and record their violence for sale as videos because a law Congress passed in 1999 against animal cruelty was written too vaguely, and could have been used to outlaw hunting videos. In an 8-1 decision, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote:

The First Amendment's guarantee of free speech does not extend only to categories of speech that survive an ad hoc balancing of relative social costs and benefits. The First Amendment itself reflects a judgment by the American people that the benefits of its restrictions on the government outweigh the costs. Our Constitution forecloses any attempt to revise that judgment simply on the basis that some speech is not worth it.

And the lone hold-out? Might surprise you. It was Samuel Alito, one of the arch conservatives on the court. Rebutting the majority's view that the law was too broad, Alito argued it could still be used to stop crush videos, which apparently appeal to some people's sexual fetish by showing women in stiletto heels crushing animals to death.

"The First Amendment protects freedom of speech, but it most certainly does not protect violent criminal conduct, even if engaged in for expressive purposes," he wrote.

Question to legal experts: does this mean the court would find constitutionally permissible a crush video depicting people being tortured to death on video on grounds the law was written too vaguely?

Anique Human 21 April : Update on USA supreme court ruling from one of our members, Sue Turcotte Osh:

A legislator who is willing to champion the fight to undo the harm the USA Supreme Court has done with its ruling. The core of the Supreme's argument is that the law as it stood was too broad, thus casting too wide a net.

Rep Gallegly's stand on the issue and his promise of new legislation as early as next week which will be narrowly tailored enough to address the issue and pass the Supreme Court's muster the next time they have to address it.

I urge everyone to contact Rep. Gallegly in support and encouragement as he moves forward with legislation to protect animals from crush/cruelty/torture videos.

I AM AN ANIMAL RESCUER

I am an Animal Rescuer

My job is to assist God's creatures. …
I was born with the drive to fulfill their needs.
I take in helpless, unwanted, homeless creatures without planning or selection.
I have bought dog food with my last dime.
I have patted a mangy head with a bare hand.
I have hugged someone vicious and afraid.
I have fallen in love a thousand times.
And I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body too many times to count.
I have Animal Friends and friends who have animal friends.
I don't often use the word "pet".
I notice those lost on the road side and my heart aches.

I will hand raise a field mouse and make friends with a vulture.
I know of no creature unworthy of my time.
I want to live forever if there aren't animals in Heaven,
but I believe there are.
Why would God make something so perfect
and leave it behind?
Some may think we are masters of the animals,
but the animals have mastered themselves. ..
something people still haven't learned.

War and abuse make me hurt for the world,
but a rescue that makes the news gives me hope for mankind.
We are a quiet but determined army and we are making a difference every day.
There is nothing more necessary than warming an orphan,
nothing more rewarding than saving a life,
no higher recognition than watching them thrive.
There- e is no greater joy than seeing a baby play who, only days ago, was too weak to eat.
By the love of those who I've been privileged to rescue,
I have been rescued.
I know what true unconditional love really is,
for I've seen it shining in the eyes of so many, grateful for so little.

Soon after this great news, Russia, one of the largest buyers of skins from slaughtered Canadian seals, banned the import of seal products after pressure from PETA and animal activists around the world.
But despite recent progress, ducks and geese are still enduring a life of cruelty, pain and suffering in order to produce foie gras. And this spring, thousands of seal pups may still be slaughtered off Canada's shores to support the international skins trade.

It might be supposed that pain and unhappiness take such myriad forms that an impossibly large hotchpotch of biochemical reactions will have to be eliminated before the emancipatory project can be complete. The difficulty, and more controversially the impossibility, of establishing non-trivial type-type identities between physical and higher mental states would seem only to make the problem worse. In one respect at least, however, the many faces of misery are deceptive. Like the various nominal sources of happiness, they foster a genetically adaptive illusion born of the way the basic neural processes which mediate emotion physically infiltrate and infuse the neo-cortex. Millions of years of DNA-driven encephalisation of emotion have obscured its primitive substrates. In striking at the ancient limbic motors of despair, neural re-engineering should induce their legion of cognitive hangers-on to dissipate too. First in humans and, progressing "down" the phylogenetic tree, eventually in every non-human metazoan as well, all of the incomprehensibly disparate modes of experience undergone should share the property of being, at the very least, generically delightful. And a uniquely vile era in the history of the world will have drawn to a close.

The Last Twisted Molecule On Earth?
This meditation on the plight of our fellow species leads to one of the few precise, and potentially falsifiable, predictions to be hazarded here about the next couple of thousand years. At some momentous and exactly datable time, I would surmise well before the end of the fourth millennium and possibly even the third, the last unpleasant experience ever to occur on this planet will take place, possibly a (purely comparatively) minor pain in some (and to us) obscure marine invertebrate.
For just as the smallpox virus was systematically hunted down to extinction, so the precise molecular signature(s) of aversive experience and its predisposing genes can predictably be hunted down and wiped out as well. The systematic application of nanotechnology, self-reproducing micro- miniaturised robots armed with supercomputer processing power, and ultra-sophisticated genetic engineering, perhaps using retro-viral vectors, will assure the eradication of the root of all evil in its naturalistic guise.

In a triumph of aestheticism over morality, many animal lovers otherwise sympathetic to the sentiments expressed here will doubtless be aghast at the very idea of losing such lovable companions and time-honoured killers as members of the cat family; but then they are unlikely to be hunted down in terror or physically eaten alive, which lends a rather different perspective to any issue at all.

Yet what about the carnivorous species? It is easy to romanticise, say, tigers or lions and cats, and admire their magnificent beauty, strength and agility. But we would regard their notional human counterparts as wanton psychopaths of the worst kind. Caring about the plight of the non-human victims of our actions is not a case of sentimental bunny-hugging nor of child-like anthropomorphism. Nor is it a matter of caring more about animals than humans; nor even, as is sometimes suggested with all appearance of seriousness, outright misanthropy. "Tender-minded" people who worry about the torture of non-humans are on balance temperamentally more rather than less inclined to act in an effort to minimise human suffering too. Such contrasts and false antitheses are in any case unhelpful. Simply in abstaining from eating meat, for instance, one can still spend just as much time campaigning for exclusively human causes as one did as a practising carnivore.
There is one real glimmer of hope amid the mechanised carnage. Within the next hundred years or so, and possibly sooner, biotechnology will enable the human species cost-effectively to mass-produce edible cellular protein, and indeed all forms of food, of a flavour and texture indistinguishable from, or tastier than, the sanitised animal products we now eat. As our palates become satisfied by other means, the moral arguments for animal rights will start to seem overwhelmingly compelling. The Western(ised) planetary elite will finally start to award the sentient fellow creatures we torture and kill a moral status akin to human infants and toddlers. Veganism, though not in quite the contemporary sense, will become the global norm. Thanks to genetic engineering, the huge reduction in gratuitous suffering promoted here is likely to take place even if none of the other predictions of HI are borne out. If they are, then the humblest snack will taste more delicious than the ambrosial food of the gods. Today's gourmets might as well be feeding on greasy chips.For the most part, however, we are willing accomplices in our own ignorance. By our purchases we pay others to commit acts of extreme violence which might otherwise upset our squeamish sensibilities. Ironically, anybody who practises, or connives in, the maltreatment of a helpless and undeveloped infant of our own species is likely to be demonised and reviled. Ordinary decent people will find it "inconceivable" how such an "inhuman" monster could cause such suffering to the young, innocent and helpless. So (s)he will be prosecuted and locked up.
What we are doing in the death-factories is so vile that a few lines of text can scarcely even hint at its ghastliness. Nevertheless, we are so inured to the notion of exploiting and killing other sentient beings to titillate our palates that many otherwise "sophisticated" people will find the starkness of expression of these paragraphs somehow sensationalistic; or perhaps "emotive", as if the reality of such suffering could properly be otherwise.

Alas this is no mere rhetorical conceit. Humans deliberately incarcerate and butcher our fellow creatures in a vast state-sanctioned apparatus of concentration and extermination camps of incommunicable horror. In retrospect, our descendants may view them as a defining feature of our age in a way akin to our own conception of the Third Reich. Analogously, the horror and even existence of the death-camps and -factories is usually camouflaged behind a mass of bland euphemism. Fortunately for our peace of mind, we find it hard properly to conceive of what we're being spared. Conditions inside the camps and factories are so gruesome that members of the public have to be barred from watching the atrocities which go on inside them.
Humanity often behaves as though it were, and as if this specialised linguistic adaptation conferred on us the moral right to treat all other creatures as though they were mere objects and commodities. For we presently keep hundreds of millions of sentient beings in unimaginably frightful conditions. We do so for no better reason than to satisfy our culinary tastes. It has aptly been remarked that if animals had a conception of the Devil, he would surely have human form.

The Taste Of Depravity

Most of the world's suffering is undergone by members of other species. This cannot rigorously be proved. On the other hand, philosophically speaking, it cannot rigorously be proved that anyone suffers or is conscious besides oneself. So in one sense the sceptic is right. The sentience of others is simply an inference to the best explanation. The price of being wrong is in any case just too high to take the risk. As it is, a convergence of evidence suggests that the nature and relative extent of organic life's biological capacity to suffer is mediated by neuronal firing frequencies, cellular and synaptic density, and a distinctive neurochemical and functional architecture of the central nervous system. Pain is not rooted in the human capacity for a generative syntax.

Would global veganism ensure a cruelty-free world? No, not by itself. Life in a state of Nature is often little kinder than a life of barbarous abuse by Man. Should we respect the ways of Nature simply because they are "natural"? Or is homage to the pain-ridden products of selfish genes as harmful a superstition as any? In one sense, after all, animals no more need liberating than babies and toddlers need liberating: they need looking after.


Jewish writer Hanna Arendt once wrote of the "banality of evil". For most of the Nazi bureaucrats who actually organised the human Holocaust were not sadistic psychopaths in the usual sense of the term. Many were devoted husbands, loving fathers and cultivated family men. They were motivated by a distorted sense of duty rather than a relish for bloodshed or suffering for its own sake. Somehow it seems the "dissociation of sensibility" between their feelings and the effects of their actions was complete. The same is true of most of our own vivisectors, abattoir managers and the bureaucrats in charge of the mass-killing apparatus. So they shouldn't be demonised. But they must still be stopped.

Each day we butcher millions of other sentient beings because we like the taste of their flesh. The functional development and intensity of suffering of our victims tend to match the capacities of human infants and toddlers. The contrast in our attitude and behaviour toward them could scarcely be greater. Imagine the anguish caused by an oxyacetylene torch applied, if only to a few seconds, to your child's face. Unspeakably appalling? Yet each day we pay - by our choice in food purchases - to have other living creatures treated no less abominably.

Animal rights, also referred to as animal liberation, is the idea that the most basic interests of animals should be afforded the same consideration as the similar interests of humans.Advocates approach the issue from different philosophical positions but agree that animals should be viewed as legal persons and members of the moral community, not property, and that they should not be used as food, clothing, research subjects, or entertainment.

The idea of awarding rights to animals has the support of legal scholars such as Alan Dershowitz and Laurence Tribe of Harvard Law School, while Toronto lawyer Clayton Ruby argues that the movement has reached the stage the gay rights movement was at 25 years ago. Animal law is taught in 113 out of 180 law schools in the United States, in eight law schools in Canada, and is routinely covered in universities in philosophy or applied ethics courses.[6] In June 2008, Spain became the first country to introduce an animal rights resolution, when a parliamentary committee voted in favor of limited rights for non-human primates, inspired by Peter Singer's Great Ape Project.[7]

Critics argue that animals are unable to enter into a social contract or make moral choices, and therefore cannot be regarded as possessors of rights, a position summed up by the philosopher Roger Scruton, who writes that only humans have duties, and that, "[the] corollary is inescapable: we alone have rights."[8] A parallel argument is that there is nothing inherently wrong with using animals as resources if there is no unnecessary suffering, a view known as the animal welfare position.[9] There has also been criticism, including from within the animal rights movement itself, of certain forms of animal rights activism, in particular the destruction of fur farms and animal laboratories by the Animal Liberation Front.
